In this clip, Grandmaster Melle Mel of the Furious 5 recounted his upbringing in the Bronx and when he first became aware of hip-hop. He also talked about the drug scene during the late 1970s and how things shifted dramatically by the 1980s with the introduction of crack.

Legend. Melle Mel is the first truly great rapper. "Life must live, death must die/And the tear shall fall from the living eye." The first dude that made me go...."oh shit"
Melle Is arguably one of the 1st MCs to start spitting full rhyme verses lyrically on top of breakbeats. Before that MCs would spit fragmented rhymes not necessarily in rhythm with the beat or just do shout outs in a slick manner. Melle Mel set the tone for how rap would sound till this very day
The message is hands down the greatest rap song ever

This gonna be a good interview
I was born and raised in the Bronx. Born in 1981. When crack first hit the streets, it was really bad. It damn near turned people into zombies. When I was about 6 years old, I actually witnessed a grown man run up on a kid, knock the kid off his big wheels bike (Popular item for kids back then), and run off with that kid's big wheels bike. Even kids back then weren't safe from dope fiends, who would rob and steal, so they could get money to purchase their next fix.
Another classic from VLAD TV
The message is arguably the best song ever (not just rap).
This is EPIC.

Duke Bootee wrote the first verse of Mel's 'The Message' rap. The music was Panache - "Every Brother Ain't a Brother". The echoey spacey signature synth part was thanks to Sugar Hill Band bassist Doug Wimbish, inspired after listening to Brian Eno's - Bush of Ghosts...

Haha if you were around then you'd know virtually every kid that liked rap tried to break.
@@ungoyone Trying to break and calling yourself an actual breakdancer(like this boob does)are two completely different things.
@@kingforty881 It wasn't nearly as strict in the 80's as it is now. Literally millions of little shorties emulating what we saw on Flashdance or Wide World of Sports battle or vids like Planet Rock. It was new and fresh and open to new styles and interpretations. Now everything is established and done for judge points.
All that to say: every kid that took it kinda serious called themselves a breakdancer in the early-mid 80's, including me. Does that make all of us wack cuz I mean, breakdancer was the industry term? I don't ever hear the new kids today say breakdancing since it's not an actual term. It's not that serious and your dislike of the host is apparent. It is what it is but getting ruffled up cuz someone you don't like grew up in a different time and denying what they did is not the business.
