- In this VladTV exclusive, Hip Hop pioneer Melle Mel sat down and detailed his entire story as one of Hip Hop's most important voices. He described growing up in the Bronx during the crack era before explaining how "Rapper's Delight" influenced him and The Furious Five to hit the studio. Mel also described the making of the legendary "The Message" and explained why it's the most important rap song in Hip Hop history. Later, he told the story of how Furious Five member Cowboy coined the "Hip Hop" term and why he believes today's rappers are the biggest culture vultures. I am very impressed with Melle Mel's intelligence and just his common sense approach to most situations. I'm a 52 year old white man and I grew up in a city where we had three black guys that went to our highschool. Back then break dancing and Graffiti with the DJ made it to that city. One of my first 12 inch vinyls was the message and The Furious Five meets the treacherous three. The Message would come on at the teen club that we had in that all white city. So rock would play most of the night and then about every hour for 10 to 15 minutes the DJ would play The Gap Band and Midnight Star NO PARKING ON THE DANCE FLOOR AND FREAKAZOID. I used to breakdance with a friend of mines that was really good. Crazy now that the internet is here all those memories can be verified, Great times. Melle Mel is a legend in this game. He should be honored more often. These greedy ass rappers today should get together and take care of these fathers of Hip Hop. Not hard to do at all.

A lot of the most prominent graff artists in NY - especially The Bronx - were Puerto Rican and even some whites (Italian - Irish - Jewish).... Break dancing Puerto Ricans featured prominently also

Got invited back stage for a drink and he had a fridge full of buckfast, if you know what that is then you'll know it's no joke. Yo grew up in the eighties born in 74 and as a white boy everyone frowned upon p funk and hip hop when that’s what I loved. Sitting for hours listening to the records looking at the album covers. Love listening to their history in the game. So much love and respect for the pioneers. Would give a million dollars to sit down and cut it up with these cats.

It's so true, as a girl, I was shamed for loving rap, and people trying to talk me out of it. They would all say why would such a nice girl like you want to listen to rap, it's not even music. Even our slang which we were heavily criticised for using, instead of the King’s English when speaking with our peers. My 4th grade teacher marked up my essay with criticism all because I compared rap to Shakespeare. I saw the similarities in them, there was a notion that Shakespeare was so hard to understand that you must be highly intelligent to understand it, not true. As long as I had a good dictionary with etymology to find the meaning of done words which can change over time. Similarly, with rap if you were never exposed to the slang, one would not be able to understand the slang and references to people and places in our neighborhoods. Case in point LL’s At the Bristol if you grew up in Jamaica Queens or went to school there you know where and what he is talking about. Of course maybe a very general idea, but in the 80’s during the crack era gives it a more potent idea of what that place was known for. If people today listen and do t gully understand it does not mean they are dumb, they just weren't there to really get the gist. He had no argument to disprove my statement. I was so mad, spent the rest of the school year warring.on him with my pen. I laugh now, but those things we're hurtful, intimating that I was not intelligent, and less of a nice girl be ause I loved music.

It's kind of a disconnect for a lot of younger people, especially if your not from a major American city, to understand the impact of this song, especially around that particular when it was released. The Bronx was ground zero in N.Y.C. for the heroin and crack epidemic; nothing as relevant to current times has been put out since. One of Vlad's best interviews. Mel is keeping it 100 and dropping real knowledge for mofos to follow if they're smart. Stay out the streets and focus on the beats. On top of that, he's got lengendary MC status. You look at videos of him back in the day he was like an MC / rock star / poet / playa combo. Mad ahead of his time. Always makes me a bit sad when I see a guy with Mel'stalent and the living those guys were able to make when rap was in its infancy, compared to mediocre dudes nowadays making silly dough for weak rhymes.
