      You don't understand what Mel was talking about, he did not say that biggie was garbage, he was saying that Biggie's style of rap would not have worked back then, when biggie came along he met P Diddy, and instantly started making records and appearing on stage, with an entourage, security etc, rap music was established! Now in the beginning of Mel's career, he had to do it the hard way, which was rapping on the streets of New York, during block parties, rent it out spaces in neighborhood parks, house parties etc, trying to make a name for his self to get a record deal, without security and without an entourage, just him and his homeboys, so they were exposed to whatever was going on in the neighborhoods, so someone coming into your neighborhood rapping gangster style would be asking to get robbed and probably shot up and get your music equipment taken, so biggie would have been a damn fool to spit those type of lyrics out back then, except in his own neighborhood on his own street corner where he was secure, hope that you understand now

The South Bronx, Queensbridge, Brooklyn and other areas all had great rappers but also some serious killers. I often compare Drake to Big because they're both talented artists that were more of entertainers than hardcore hip hop artists. They both have great flows and braggadocious rhymes. So in my head, to say Big would do good in Mel's era is to say Drake would do good in Big's era..

    • @chuckbrown5469
      @chuckbrown5469 2 роки тому +2

      Naw BIG was indeed a hardcore rapper accepted by the streets as one of the GOATs for his all out lyricism. He crossed over mainly due to Bad Boy's production style (much like that of Heavy D's). The same can pretty much be said for Drake except that he crossed over due to his appeal to women (much like LL). So that analogy is pretty thin. Again I say Melle is being a bit of a grumpy old man & he's hatin' cuz I'm sure BIG would've did just as well in the Sugar Hill era if not better. Hell, Big Bank Hank of Sugar Hill rose to prominence in his era with lyrics he stole from Grandmaster Caz. Funny how no one mentions that

      Great comment. I suspect he low key wished he had enjoyed the solo success Biggie had enjoyed despite both having their respective crews around them. At the end of the day I believe that Biggie popped at a time in the nineties when hip hop was exploding into the Mainstream.
      Mel and them were 10 years or so too old or should I say early for the big deals with big paper. He disappoints me in so far as he doesn't appear to give those that came after him their props. No, Jay would agree with him because he himself is old enough to remember when street cats looked down on rappers and called them corny in the days before big money started to change everything.

    I think the many are a lil confused. I think they believe when people say "hip hop is from the streets", they assume the 1st emcees were rapping gangsta shit. It was about partying and having fun then. Emcees would throw in street shit, but it wasn't gratuitous like today. Many emcees would even name themselves after cocaine like "Ski", "Blow", or the 1st emcee Coke La Rock, but they didn't rap about that all day if at all.
    So technically, Mel's right.
