I'm not an expert, but every channel I follow has strongly recommended a carbon clean every 60k miles on a modern diesel. Just had my EGR fail at 215k miles (2.0L TDI 170hp vw). Getting the carbon clean done at next service, as used car prices have gotten unaffordable with the inflation in Germany.

Going to pull apart my B47 inlet manifold next weekend for a good cleanout! Looking foward to it actually! :)

Nice instructions, thanks. Why does driving short journeys cause such a build-up of carbon and what can be done to minimise the build-up?

Multiples of that amount of carbon is probably carried by the air flow into the cylinders. It makes one wonder whether the air filter makes much of a difference to the life of the engine considering all that abrasive carbon that is taken from the exhaust and re-eaten. Surely they could take the EGR gas from after the particulate filter instead of in front of it?

damn thats a lot of sludge. just got a 520 with b47 and 160k km on it. egr system was on recall so i got it done asap. now i’m concerned about other intake parts.. no wonder some of these engines (intake manifolds if i understood right) have caught fire lol! what was the mileage on this engine?

Nice comment thanks. Think it had done about 80k. Mostly short journeys!

@@How2FixIt1 sheesh!! gotta say i expected a lot more! i’ll probably check these intake parts some day just out of curiosity. i want to do it before a warning light comes on. i stand behind preventive maintenance with all mechanical things.
and yeah, i know short journeys are poison for these new diesels. i try to combat that by making regular rapid accelerations with warm engine and sometimes driving with lower gear/higher rpm for a longer period of time while driving a little longer distance. dont know how much these things help but at least im trying lol
oh and awesome video! i appreciate these kinds of videos that help people keep better care of their expensive belongings
