I am a technician and so when you asked the question "Should the EGR valve be open or closed during DPF regeneration?" and I didn't immediately know I thought huh? How come I've never had to consider that before? Good question.
But what I do know about EGRs is they allow spent gases to occupy some of the combustion chamber therefor reducing exhaust temperatures and NOx emissions as a result.
What I know about DPF regeneration is the temperatures are extremely high to break down the hydrocarbons clogging the filter.
Logically then: The EGR should be closed during a DPF regen. But I imagine there are specific circumstances in the mapping that will allow for it to be open maybe some of the time.
Good video again Dan. You're a legend and obviously really know your stuff.

The cars are so well made nowadays, that it's amazing,
they inteligently manage to carefully design and make a simple 2 bolt EGR valve that you absolutely need a 1000 euro computer to allow you to tighten those 2 bolts,
    just amazing

When the egr valve is open, the temperature of the exhaust gas will decrease. With a closed valve it Increases wich is necessary for the regeneration (around 600°c i believe)

Thanks man, Interesting those EGR valves.
When I bought my iQ in 2010 the EGR was draining from before the catalyst, from the exhaust. These were the then " older" model iQ's (till second half 2010) . After some strong discussion with Toyota Holland they replaced the EGR valve, that now was draining after the catalyst. All the newer models from second half 2010 had it in this way.
The older models had some problems due to the placement of the EGR valve. I think owners in England went to court about this. Cars would randomly stop having power and go in limp-mode.
After a lot of discussion here in Holland with Toyota, they exchanged the valve and catalyst. For free.
It has never been a recall action. Weirdly.

The EGR and the Throttle Body are active during regeneration, (I’m not going to say open or closed as their positions change) the reason for this is to control the level of oxygen entering the combustion chamber which then controls exhaust Temperature during regeneration.

With an EGR on I got DPF regenerations each 250km. With EGR Off i have a regeneration each 900km. In a normale case when regeneration is active the EGR is close. An open EGR make a lower inside burning temperature. For a good DPF regeneration the DPF needs a high temperature. Thanks for the video, Dan. To check regenarations I have connected a warning licht to the rear window heating connection. So I have allways a completed regeneration. If lamp is on i drive till the lamp is off. Takes +/- 10 minutes.

After looking at this video a second time, I start to understand what's happening. One thing which isn't mentioned is that when the valve is stucked, the engine die after some seconds, and in the meantime it run very rough. When you try to start several times, may be the engine keep on running.
In my car, X3/F25 30d 2011, it got stuck this week (fault code P042E).
    Long story short.
There is a plastic cover above the gears compartment, by removing that I could see that the axle/valve was stuck in open position. This time I could move it up and down by the hand. I put som grease on the moving parts, and I will drive a little to see what happens next then I put the cover back.
There was no soot at all among the gears! The car has been driven 246,399 km, but it is "new" for me.
    The adventure goes on... 🥺😉

Let me just say that Harbor Freight sells a set of security bits, and the one they sell for cheap has a whole set of torque bits in it. I recently used a T40 to remove a bolt from a throttle body on a 96 Cadillac DeVille. It didn't need the security hole in the middle for it but it was the only T40 I had. You never know when you'll need a bit that needs a hole in the middle to work on something. You don't see them often but you don't need one until you need one!

hi Dan, in answer to your question, to regen the DPF , it need to be heated about 600 degrees, and it would be done by injecting fuel ATDC ,it's like to make stroke in the DPF,so the EGR should be closed , to not cooling down Exhust temperature.

During the DPF regeneration process diesel fuel is injected into the cylinder after combustion has taken place on the exhaust stroke (post injection) so it is pushed through the open exhaust valve into the exhaust system. Here it is burned with air to generate the heat required to burn the carbon (soot) in the DPF, so the EGR would be closed to increase the temperature.
Keep it up Dan, great videos!
Even a school boy would understand what you're talking about...:)

  • @mikester1290

I've been through the same exact thing but the scan tools I had did not have the feature to put the EGR into the fitting position, I had to work out which wires were for the actuator and simply supplied them with 12V while I fitted it, and fitted it quick because who knows what duty cycle the EGR actuator is designed for, but it worked, the only other thing you didn't say, and this could be my memory here as it was a while back is that I recall using a diag tool to tell the ECU it had a new EGR valve fitted, which is common these days.

  • @mikechiodetti4482

Great video, the install tip and the question. I would think the valve needed to be closed during regeneration so maximum heat can burn the particulates in the filter.

  • @HobbySMD
    @HobbySMD 2 роки тому +1

Dpf regen happens by injecting more fuel post (after tdc). This will make exhaust heat. Egr is allways closed under regen to get maximum o2 in to combustion. A leaking egr valve will make combustion colder and less clean, making life for dpf hard..

definitely right to replace it if you want to warranty it, but I would definitely go get some Berryman carb cleaner or some Rust Blaster and spray it down and clean it. I might even take something like that and put it in some Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother in it and submerge it in a small glass bowl and let it soak for an hour or so. I've done that on a lawn mower gas tank before that had a lot of build up from dirty low octane gas and it had the screen in the bottom of the gas tank shiny again. Even adding some baking soda to it will activate a cleaning foam with the vinegar that is actually great to use in bathtub and sink drains!

Hi Dan a potential cause for the parasitic draw could actually be the egr too As its commanded shut after engine is off then it will often try to satisfy the position sensor by trying to release the egr, this is the reason you sometimes hear a loud buzzing from the failed egrs with electronic actuators. Its not something I've proved like but I know the egrs are required shut during start up to allow the maf and intake calculations to be accurate without unmetered egr flow. The current draw could be similar to when a starter goes duff. You still send the same power that's required.... but it does nothing and if the computer is trying to close a stuck open valve by commanding the motor to give the spring a little push for a while after cars of it could create a draw. Just a thought. Hope your well. Haha get top Don to send me freebies and ill love them long time hahaha

@@Diagnosedanhi Dan love your videos but didn't say it was blocked I said you should have checked it while you had the valve out and yes they can start blocking up and sooting up the egr valve that was your fault sticking egr return spring valve ya ? And it is a "caged" type so the valve isn't just hanging out in the open like that. And to answer your question, EGR is closed during DPF regen. as many of the comments is claiming. But not completely, i'm guessing the EGR position sensor is around ~2,5%.

The EGR on my 84 Lincoln Mark VII would get stuck open and I would have chunks of carbon holding the valve open . When stuck open the car would not idle. Never figured out what caused the carbon. I think it was related to slack in the timing chain , causing the vehicle to run rich. The work around was a screen that caught the carbon .

I had this on my 2011 520D , new EGR sorted it, FYI there is a couple of EGR cooler recalls of the BMW B47 engine [ my Current one] , cooling fluid leaking from the EGR cooler onto a hot exhaust manifold can cause a fire.

Well done Dan. It's understandable why you decided to change that egr valve for brand new, you own the shop and by trying to clean that valve and possible problems down the road equals doing same job twice hence losing time and money, probably having unsatisfied customer.
On the other side that valve looks pretty simple, if that was my car I would try to soak that valve in some kind of solution that dissolve carbon deposits, little bit of compressed air and some kind of fine brush..
To answer your question - should valve be open or not during dpf regeneration - I think it should be closed because regeneration needs higher exhaust gasses temp and recirculation is doing opposite thing by bringing O2 down in combustion cycle, narrowing conditions for harmful NOX gasses to be produced.

Like i say in the video, if its your own car you are working on you can try to clean it 100%.

@@Diagnosedan The problem is that the black soot doesn't cause issues (soot is actually a lubricant). It's other, harder deposits such as oil ash that form a hard high-friction layer which lead to sticking valves. And that layer is virtually impossible to clean off. We've had many issues with sticking VTG systems due to such deposits forming between the center section and the variable guide vanes. Especially after regeneration, when there was no soot inside the VTG, they tended to start sticking. In the end the supplier of the VGT had to modify the tolerances and the material spec of the vane actuator shaft to fix this issue.

An open valve helps lower the exhaust gas temperature and reduce NOx.
It needs to be closed to allow the exhaust temperature to increase sufficiently for regeneration.
    @diagnosedan these videos are 👌

Great work Dan, Love all the bonus footage as well 🤣 :)
An EGR valve installation position, does it also need a relearn after install?
The extra lengths to stop people working on their vehicle I guess it could be possible to retract by applying voltage during install if the shop had no feature on their scan tools, similar to electronic brake caliper and using the electronic brake switch/button for adaption afterwards.
Always good to see your videos, I hope ya get time to post up more often😃

    Excellent video Dan!
I've have this exact issue with my 520d, BMW replaced the valve and cooler and updated the software, issue resolved for a couple of months, then new EGR got clogged/stuck again, replaced again, I now have the same symptoms again with the 2nd new valve. Any suggestions why it is still happening? They mentioned the software update controls the valve differently now depending on the temperature 🤔
