Wow. I have NEVER seen daylight turn completely black like that. Those clouds were pitch black! That’s freaky.
Neither have I. They were darker than the middle of night.
Cuz the clouds were full of dust.
That was dust, not clouds
There was something sinister in the way the storm blotted out the daylight. Just soaked it up.
Why are those people driving toward the cloud (or at least away from it instead of beside it)?!!!
I live in Texas and have been through 17 tornadoes. I've been deployed in Afghanistan three times and dealt with sandstorms. This looked like the worst of both.
it was scary stuff, atleast nobody was shooting at us...
Thank you for your service.
Thank you for your bravery and service. God bless you and yours.
It certainly does look like a sandstorm or a dust storm (haboob) accompanied this derecho; because a derecho alone CANNOT turn things THAT DARK during the day! Only with the help of a dust storm or sandstorm can a derecho make daylight so dark! Much like that dust storm in Broken Hill, Australia! ua-cam.com/video/95tmYmeHf84/v-deo.html
I was thinking of close to the same thing only the dust bowl
I don't think I've ever seen that kind of prolonged, utter darkness directly from a storm before. I didn't even know it was possible for clouds and debris to completely enshroud sunlight like this (unless potentially in the fallout of a super volcano eruption), insane footage.
It’s not. Dude made his camera darker than what it really was.
Afraid not. Actual raw GoPro footage, no adjustments, edits, or modifications.
It got this way in the derecho of 2020 that hit Iowa.
@@DanRustle No he did not. I live in Brookings and this is exactly what I experienced. It was as dark midnight on a cloudy night, then the power went out and I couldn't see my hand in front of my face for several minutes.
No he did not. This was the real stuff!
WOW that looked like the storm from Hell when it was coming in. Then it got pitch black and couldn't see 10 feet in front of you. Man that's scary.
Couldn't open car door either due to high winds (that is why I said the explicative on the video - no escape back into the building) and that's why I turned into the wind like steering a boat into a wave so your not capsized or in this care as easily flipped by wind.
Every year these storms starts to look stronger and different cause of climate changes,if people can't take good care of earth, earth won't take good care of us especially knowing how venus turn out to be.
especially when the damned radio is saying "tornado warning" and its pitch fuccin black
A lot like the sandstorms during Dust Bowl days!
It was the scariest looking storm I’ve ever seen. And I usually love watching t storms. Being in a car made it even worse. When the black hit you couldn’t see the front end of your car.
The part where darkness suddenly envelops the sky isn't something I'd expect to actually occur in real life. Absolutely wild
That's terrifying. Daylight, but the dust turned it to night. And the lights in the parking lot being off doesn't make it any better. I can only imagine how terrifying and alone I'd feel if a disaster knocked out power in the entirety of my city, and I *really* had to be in a safe place before sundown or else I'm stuck wandering in COMPLETE darkness.
Lights on poles went out due to light poles and power lines going down about 300 yds in front of me where the first black clouds appear in the video and tore aluminum canopies off gas station. My next video will show aftermath, damage, and EMS response once the wind died down about 45 min after start of storm and some light was beginning to come thru clouds.
I live here, it was top 2 of the wildest storms I've experienced in my 25 years.
The skies in my area turned a perfect arsenic green during one of the derechos in that time period. It was a whole Saint Patrick's day parade out there. It was alien invasion. I don't even know anymore!
My daughter lives there, She was scared out of her mind. Had 3 kids in the car and beatin for shelter. They found it. Thank God !
Im speechless about this if people wouldnt call this the end of the world nothing will.
True dat !
@@markdichiara6299
That's not the way the end of the world will happen.
@@eyemnew2991 ~ the concentration of severe weather & signs in the heavens & earthquakes IS a sign that the End is getting very close.
Looks like night, but creepier, darker and much more dangerous
Yep especially chasing tornadoes
Right...from 1:27 to 1:40 it suddenly becomes pitch black. Horrifying
Double Trouble: practically ALL of the severe thunderstorms within this derecho were ALSO tornado-warned, which is highly unusual. Another time when something similar happened (i.e., squall lines spawning numerous tornadoes) was during Rounds 1 and 2 of the April 27, 2011 Super Outbreak in the Deep South. The reason that happened was that, at that time, conditions were *EXTREMELY* favorable for tornadoes, due to a rare but dreaded combination of summer-like instability and winter-like wind shear. Round 3 was the *BIG ONE:* the March of the Supercells. That round spawned the greatest number of tornadoes, including FOUR EF5 tornadoes!
April 2011 included Tuscaloosa, AL direct hit.
dude, I would be very scary to live in that place
Great comment man. I witnessed april 27,2011 first hand because i live in Alabama. That day gave me total respect for severe weather
@@THEDC777 Oddly enough, the Great Plains, even though they are considered to be within Tornado Alley, don't typically get these massive tornado outbreaks. Instead, the tornado outbreaks that we get in the Plains are typically in the form of clusters in rather small areas. I believe that it's all in the availability of moisture combined with wind shear. Areas east of the Mississippi River simply have more moisture available than the Great Plains do. More moisture means that that area can have bigger tornado outbreaks than the Great Plains can. Although the tornado outbreaks east of the Mississippi River might be less common than the tornado outbreaks in the Great Plains, boy do they make up for it by being MUCH bigger and involving large numbers of strong to violent (EF2 - EF5) tornadoes!
HAARP is fueling this crap. therr have been far far too many of these storms. NOT NORMAL
Good Lord. The darkness dropped like a curtain in no time at all. That's insane.
How it goes from day to pitch darkness I find quite astonishing in all honesty.
I was farther south, but this is exactly how we experienced it. In a convenience store, where the whole front was glass. Terrifying, especially when the power went out.
Yeah - buildings with big plate glass windows give frightening views of storms like that!!
I don't love earthquakes and wildfires in California but these wind events in the plains and middle of the country lately really are something. Sheesh, what a sight!
Vero o...why would you like wildfires?? Ppl lose their homes, animals die and beautiful trees...I see why you like earthquakes, born and raised in Cali and would take an earthquake over a Tornado and hurricane any day!!
@@marymartina5813 I don't love them, I was saying that even as a Californian who is threatened by wildfires and earthquakes, the tornadoes and derechos that keep hammering the Midwest look pretty scary. So, I feel as you do. Stay safe.
@@vero0992 I'm sorry, I read you're text wrong...Tornados are soo scary!! I would freak out if I was ever to see one!!
Thank you and you stay safe as well.
Not just lately, but forever. Remember that event called the Dustbowl?
0:52 When the power goes out before the worst of the storm arrives, you know you're in trouble.
That's what happened in my neighborhood when the 2012 derecho hit the DC metro area. The storm took out every part of the power grid that was in its path.
I was there that day in MD suburbs, could here the power lines short-circuit booms as they approached the house. Lost power before the wind really hit.
This is what I love about nature. Nature doesn't care about your race, opinions, your politics... and especially your religion/faith. It's coming without your permission and it's going to do, what it's going to do, and there is NOTHING one can do but 'duck & cover.' Utter respect!
We can pray to Jesus, He,will spare us. We had 5 storms starting April 26, 2024 try to come into Omaha. Intense prayer turned them away. One tornado hit the outskirts, Elkhorn. These aren't normal storms.
@@Toni-rw1lb shut up
We were in front of it going 65 mph on a two lane highway, it actually gained ground on us, met a sheriff heading out to watch for tornadoes in this mix, sirens wailing when we got into town, very surreal, the bank of clouds were green and mixture of dirt
A dust storm, in the form of a haboob (which is a dust storm with a wedge-shaped front, which can be caused by either a cold front or in this case a thunderstorm gust front), accompanied this derecho. This explains the blackout (i.e., the thick dust made the environment pitch black).
I remember coming home from work and I just see this massive dust cloud move into my area. Absolutely scary.
Righttt, that was insanee.
Good on your city for activating the sirens. I hear most cities didn't and could have saved that Sioux Falls teacher's life. Maybe she wouldn't have gotten in her car if she heard the sirens go off.
I love how people just drive around going about their errands in the face of a monster like this approaching, even with the sirens going off. It really showcases who among us are the turkeys that will stare slack-jawed up into the rain until they drown.
It was horrible timing. that storm hit right when most people were going home from work or hurrying to get home
@@markd188 That's a hard argument to make considering late afternoon/early evening is prime time for thunderstorm (especially supercell) development since that's when diurnal heating is at its peak. I can't even imagine, even knowing it wasn't a tornado, seeing that giant, ugly mass coming at me and not pulling over asap to find structural shelter. Derecho winds can potentially displace a vehicle, if not just make it incredibly dangerous to operate one, and this event was forcasted accurately.
It was rush hour in Sioux Falls. People knew it was going to storm, but this wasn't communicated until it happened. You also have to realize this type of storm is not common here so nobody knew what they were looking at.
In most places with sirens going off especially if it's a common occurrence you learn to watch and observe the weather. This occurrence may have been during time for folks to be off work. Just bad timing but folks need to get home. The places they were at would most likely be much worse areas to stay and shelter most likely as well. So no 'turkeys' but definitely bad time of day for a storm to hit.
What do you expect them to do exactly? Stop driving and get out of the car? Isn't this guy recording the video also one of these turkeys that you're talking about that then
Holy smoke it went day to night really fast that’s how crazy big it was… hope u guys are all ok
It was creepy with it getting dark so fast… went from daylight to midnight in a few minites
1:31 that shift holyyy
It was crazy. my power went off in an instant then i went to look out the window it was pitch black and the winds were screaming
Chill was only Noctrune's ult
It would be a very bad time to be on the road somewhere.
I was in Sioux Falls when this happened and it was definitely the most scariest things ever.
This reminds me of my dad’s descriptions of the dust bowl storms.
I was born in Deadwood SD. My parents moved us to California when I was 2. Thank goodness. Never seen or heard about this from one of my 13 aunts and uncles who still live there. That was amazing and frightening in equal measure.
Thank you Jack Sloan for posting this!!!!
Incredible video. Thank you for sharing this.
I was in the middle of that in my car. My back door window was exploded by something
Very cool video! Glad you survived and thanks for sharing!😮
Thanks for sharing this!
It's hard to believe it was that dark from clouds and imagine a tornado hiding in all that darkness, that's something straight out of a nightmare.
My God that's terrifying, please stay safe, from Manitoba, Canada
I’m in Sioux Falls and seeing just a wave of darkness and dust coming in was insane! Then came the wind and phone alerts. That was insane and can’t believe how hard places around us got hit!
I've never seen video of a dust storm derecho (haboob) where it got dark as night because of the dust thickness!
That's not dust thickness, that's cloud thickness!
@@RogerCA66 Dust definitely contributed substantially to the darkness. I've seen plenty of serious t-storms, and hardly ever get that dark from clouds alone. Other SD derecho videos showed zero visibility in dust with the initial gust front before rainfall began.
Dust and dirt, definitely. What you see on wind shield isn’t water, but dirt. The rain started much later.
It stopped being dark about half an hour later, but the wind and rain continued for much longer.
This looks insanely unreal, the way those fast moving clouds move in, the way it grows so dark _so dang fast._ We had one similar to this two weeks ago in southern Ontario and in southern Quebec. We don’t get them a lot (if at all), it literally took many of us by surprise. The damage was immense from the aftermath of the storm. It didn’t turn _THIS_ dark where I was though, THIS looks like night in the middle of nowhere.
Thanks for sharing this, nature beautiful but sometimes scary as heck.

I saw something similar back in 2001 during a tornado at the then Airborne Express Terminal, where I worked as a computer technician and flight simulator operator (three different platforms). I had already been through an F5 back in the 1974 Super Outbreak, and that is what totally destroyed any calmness about severe weather. In this case, the sky was this black, but the power was still on. I saw the funnel drop when I got into the computer building. Was ready to hit the alarm, but the tower saw it at the same time...there were about 20 cargo jets loading up for the night flights. I ran into the building and grabbed two colleagues and we went into the reinforced stairwell that was the "safe area." I was shaking but my co-worker was sobbing uncontrollably and so I tried to divert the attention to how cool it was to be in a tornado (yeah..right,...I know)...and felt the pressure change and the ears pop...looked out the safety door and everything was this black but greener and the huge windows were bowing in and out. then it cleared. The tornado jumped the road and hit a farm across from the airpark. I do not even want to think about a twister hitting all those jets. I have since retired and moved everyone to our nice spot in the relatively calm SW. I will just enjoy seeing other folks' photos and videos...I absolutely get the chills. When we bought the property, and found out what the physical address was (rather than...three miles past the flagpole and the red pump handle on our private road), Mother Nature had a laugh at us...part of our road name is "Derecho!" 🤠🌞
This is an incredible shot. It is both terrifying and amazing.
I was in sioux falls leaving work and this storm chased me about an hour north to brookings. I got home and watched the day turn to night. Was definitely a wild experience!
Holy shit. I've never seen anything like this.
Imagine being there in real life.
Man that's insane.
That is crazy how it got dark sooo fast! Wow!
I been through a tornado and I was js sitting outside watching it, crazy part about this storm I’m talking about is it was 3 pm and it looked like it was 3 am
I was in that Derecho, we refer to as the “May 8th storm” that swept our town in Souther Illinois I think in like 2012 or somewhere in that time frame. That was an intense storm
jesus the darkness and the speed at which it fell is absolutely insane
Interesting to experience this weather phenomenon.
I lived in the MW for a while and it never ceased to amaze me how casual people were when bad weather blew in.
I grew up in Lubbock Texas and this reminds me of the many dust storms that I endured growing up in the Panhandle.
The complete blackout in daylight actually terrified me! I have seen it get very dark; but never so dark that it blots out the sun completely!!! Wow that is scary!!!!
So impressive. And all that just because of warm, moist air colloding with dry, colder air in a particular way feeding a thunderstorm causing rotation and a certain way of feedback loop, sucking in and blowing out with all force at the same time. So much potential energy in the air around us. Literally "when shit hits the fan".
We were headed to Sioux Falls when this hit. I've never been so terrified in my life 🙏
I'm from Nashville and have lived in Missouri... I have been through some of the scariest storms where we stood out on the porch and watched... I seen that cloud moving in that afternoon and my boys, the cat and I ran to the bathroom (bottom floor apartment)... so fkn scary... I've never experienced that before and hope I never do again...
That was crazy awesome how fast it went from daylight to dark! I've never seen anything like it
I was in the Dubai storm, and i thought that was the darkest it could get, it looked like midnight at just 3 pm in the morning, little did i know there was storms like these making you feel blind
That is fucking terrifying. Makes the one here in Ontario that happened Saturday look like a shower.
Wtf 😲 I've never seen anything like this before not even on UA-cam damn this is my first time thanks for sharing
Tornadoes are violent and are just as deadly but Derechos I still think can be worse. Great footage.
I honestly thought that the clouds rolling in at the beginning is what you were talking about, and i could see the camera adjusting the brightness to keep things visible, and then it went full black. That's terrifying.
Wow just wow I couldnt imagine being there for this. I like storm but this is just crazy.
My dad was from Illinois. He use to talk about when he was a boy out working in the fields, how storms would come in . He said it would be 12 noon and you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face . I allways thought he was building it up a little bit . Apparently i was wrong . That was during the great depression.
Frightening! Was it a combination of wind and dust? My brother lives in Northern Cali where every recent summer there have been significant fires. He sent me a video one day taken at noon on what started out as a sunny, albeit smokey, day. The fire was very close to their house, and I was shocked to see that their place turned as dark as in your video! Pitch black at noon! Yes, they’ve had to evacuate for days at a time for the last 3 summers. Mother Nature will have her way! Hope everyone was okay on the day you took this video!
Watertown was the same way just all of a sudden hit hard as hell with terribly high high winds it was pretty crazy
We were lucky and were north a little when this hit. Glad you are ok
You, too. Wasn't expecting to run into a derecho that day. Major pucker factor was automatically activated that day in my car. LOL
Bit of a juxtaposition between watching a terrifying tornado that turns day into night and knowing at that moment that you’ve just sold several items on eBay.
LOL....... have a leather shop at home for holsters and horse tack and forgot to put it on "time away" status.
That is the darkest I have EVER seen a storm turn, plus it turned dark so fast! 😨
Got video of it from my house on the western edge of Sioux Falls and it was pretty much the same. As soon as the rain really started it cleared up pretty fast though.
Most cameras usually brighten the picture up too so it must have actually been pitch black in there. Crazy. I’ve been thru a dust storm like this once in AZ but it wasn’t that dark.
I've seen this before. Clouds like this that block out the sun to make it dark as night. I was in 7th grade and it was so weird. I was either 12 or 13 at the time and in school.
SCARY, glad that you're safe.
That is scary. If I ever been in a storm like this, I would freak out.
1:27 -- looks like a fast-moving dust devil kicked up at the leading edge of the outflow. Amazing to see.
Spin up twister also known as a gustnado.......
Wow..but WOOOOHOOOO also camera guy had one job and did brilliantly!
I was at work when this happened and our door flew open, needless to say we closed early and people were pissed that we were closed.
Great footage. I'm curious about your video setup. What kind of camera do you use? Would you say that the video is pretty accurate as far as the darkness descending? I know one or two of my lightning cameras get a little wonky unless I manually adjust the ISO settings every once in a while. I only ask because I've never seen a storm so effectively shroud all light, so if what you saw is close to what the camera captured, then damn. That must have been an insane sight to see live.
Video 4k 170 degree view 60fps Gopro type camera and the lighting is dead on what I was seeing with the naked eye. I was actually very surprised and happy with how accurate the video was. First time using this camera. I still have 4 videos with the hurricane force winds that came in behind this darkness to post as well as the damage aftermath as soon as I can get them edited. These first 2 were raw, just the way they were shot, I do not mess with the lighting or anything that would change what the actual view was at the time of videoing an event.
I live in Sioux Falls, Sd. This storm was insane!
Looks like a massive tornado. Day After Tomorrow style. Crazy how it went complete pitch black. Incredible
Crazy how it went from light to dark in 5 seconds!
My god. One moment, it was relatively light out. The next, COMPLETELY pitch dark (coupled with electricity being knocked out by the derecho before the darkness came).
Glad you made it out alive 🙏
Reminds me of video and pictures from the dust bowl in the central USA in ‘20 and ‘30s.
Those things are always a trip ‼️
I experienced one of these in DC - it was incredible and terrifying.
I kinda get the Revelations bit about how the day could turn to night now and stay that way for several days. From day to darker than night in such a brief period was crazy, never seen anything like that and have been through big storms and dust storms here in Oz, but that really was freaky.
Nice of brookings to sound sirens. My area did not and we just had people out in the weather everywhere.
I *REALLY REALLY REALLY* want to know what program or logic those parking lot lights were using. They were on when it was still light out. As it got darker (before the full brunt of the storm hit) they suddenly turn off. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I know alot of things get damaged in these and its sad but really I just find this super cool and interesting to watch everything turn completely black it's like nothing you ever see
I have never seen it turn black as night! Wow. Scary
how long did it stay that dark for? I've been through a couple but nothing like that
About half an hour
That was really creepy, scary, and dangerous! I wouldn't be in the path of this Derecho!
Happens in Middlesbrough in the UK ,in the sixties , it was like midnight at noon , then the hail started,
I've never seen anything like this! Creepy how the sky became pitch black!
Its something out of the twilight zone. How everthing goes black in no time along with the ghostly surreal sound of the alarm.
It is incredible how dark it gets
I am 64, and in the fifth grade in SE Alabama, we experienced the entire daylight sky turn to night! I remember my teacher (Ms. Bryant) looking out the windows and appeared to be praying! It was really creepy!
Ms. Bryant at Rehobeth ?
Was at home near flandreau, that was fun to watch.
This is like something from a movie. Very few have seen daylight to complete darkness within a minute and a few seconds. Many would think an apocalypse was occurring.
i was half expecting Sauron and his Orcs to march in with the storm
wow, I live in the mid-west for 50 years and have never seen things that dark going into a storm before, close but never that dark
I've been in some bad storms, but nothing on this scale. Man, that's whole different level to "the world is going to end!"
i have a question that might sound stupid but i’ve never seen this before: those cars on the left-hand side of the video- are they circling the parking lot? it might just be the angle and they’re actually leaving, but to me it looks like they’re making a circle
That was darker than an eclipse ......eerie and scary
I witnessed a tornado 41 years ago before which the sky got the darkest I'd ever seen it, but what is shown in this video is darker than that!
