What you are responding to is 5 part tight harmony from an emotionally attached and engaged group.

Just a little story about how they feel about each other…Upon winning the Sing Off, Kirstie was asked what the win meant to her. Without hesitation she replied that it means now the whole world can see how great MITCH really is! Pretty unselfish I would say….

I've watched interviews with the group and the interviewer asked who the best singer is and everyone pointed to Mitch. He would be pointing to either Kevin or Avi. Shawn Stockman called Kevin and Avi freaks of nature and the meat and potatoes of the group.

8:26 I believe the Bass (Matt) is doing the Bass.
Kevin is assisting the higher notes, adding emphasis and creating dissonance.

In my opinion there is not another group that arranges better than them, and probably no one better than them for a decade. They bring out emotions in listeners in ways that I have never seen, sorrow, joy, euphoria, melancholy, gratitude and many others. It usually turns them into Pentaholics and I don't think there is a cure.
They are a magical unicorn of a group that can sing in any style and genre. They make music that just seems to defy the laws of physics.

I got the pleasure of hearing this in concert in December of last year and they did it with no microphones in a completely sold out venue with like 20,000 people there and it was so amazing! It was so quiet during the whole song that you could hear a pin drop. It was the most amazing experience of my life

Scott and Mitch met when they were 10 and both met Kirstie while at school. Scott and Mitch did a side thing called Superfruit which was amazing!! They all have done solo side projects but agreed that PTX would always be the priority. I've never known a group so in sync with each other. I don't think they are human!

They still do Superfruit - an outlet for both Mitch and Scott to be as "fruity" as they please (hence the play on Superfruit), perform and do things that would not be "acceptable" for Pentatonix. They have a lot of guest collaborations too

This is long.. but I want to give you what info was made known by PTX to their fans since their first appearance on The Sing-Off on NBC in 2011 and in the years after.
Scott, Mitch and Kirstie grew up in the same town. All 3 were active in Community Theater from young ages (there are home movies on UA-cam). Mitch and Kirstie went to the same school beginning in kindergarten (I believe), but actually got to know each other through Community Theater. Scott attended a different school and he met and became friends with Mitch through Community Theater when they were Grade School. So Mitch knew Kirstie and Scott.. But Kirstie and Scott weren't introduced to each other until Scott began attending the same High School (Martin High School) they went to. Mitch introduced them to each other. They were choir nerds and formed an Acapella group called "The Trio". They wanted to bring in a new sound for Acapella and there are videos of "The Trio" on UA-cam.
In Middle School Scott and Mitch began some singing together as a duet. There are some videos of them on UA-cam.. singing in what looked like a bookstore in a mall? Could have been a school library? And there's a nice one of them performing in a school talent show. There's videos of each doing solo music at that age on UA-cam too.
Mitch and Kirstie dated briefly in Middle School. Mitch and Scott dated in High School I'm thinking 🤔 and they became best friends. The breakup and then Scott going away to college nearly ended their friendship. Mitch is one grade level lower than Scott and Kirstie. He was a Senior in High School when Scott and Kirstie left to attend different colleges.
A fellow student and Scott's friend at college had seen "The Trio" on UA-cam and told him they were good enough to audition for The Sing-Off, an Acapella group competition on NBC. He said they'd need to add 2 more people to the group for the competition to qualify.. a bass and a beatboxer. First, Scott had to see if Kirstie and Mitch would drop everything they were doing and get The Trio back together (plus 2 people) and audition for The Sing-Off with him. They both said "yes".
Scott found a video of Kevin on UA-cam and wanted him to join the group. Kevin was about to enter Yale where he was studying to become a doctor.
Scott's college friend (Ben Bram) knew a great bass.. Avi Kaplan and he asked him if he'd be interested in this thing. Avi also had seen The Trio on UA-cam and thought they were really talented so he threw his hat in the ring.
Kevin, Scott, Kirstie and Mitch all put school on hold to audition for The Sing-Off. Avi was about to give up on trying to make a career out of music when Scott contacted him. He decided to give The Sing-Off a try before throwing in the towel.
The Trio had arranged a version of Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and they made a version that would include Avi and Kevin mobily. The 5 all met and sang together for the first time in person the night before their morning audition for The Sing-Off. They had to pick a "group leader" for the show and Scott was picked because this was his idea. He also suggested the name "Pentatonix" based on the Pentatonic Scale and them being a group of 5 people (penta). In 2011 they auditioned, got on the show and won. Pentatonix was born. Sony Music renigged on their prize of a recording contract one week after the kids won stating that they didn't believe Acapella could be competitive in main stream music. The group packed up, moved into houses next to each other in LA and worked their butts off.. mainly on UA-cam. The Daft Punk Medley video they filmed in a closet and kitchen at Kevin and then Avi's homes won them a Grammy. Ben Bram (Scott's college friend) recorded and produced it. He won a Grammy for his work on it beside Pentatonix. Ben has been with them this entire time.
RCA (a subsidiary of Sony Music) signed them and that's when Sony Music Entertainment started making it impossible to share and react to Pentatonix videos on the very place they had worked so hard for years. They are a group that made a name for themselves on UA-cam.

Scott and Mitch have been best friends from age 8, meeting at community theater. They met Kirstin in high school. Scott wanted them to enter The Sing Off but found out that the minimum number of members per group was 5. Scott found Avi through a friend and Scott emailed him asking him if he'd like to join their group. They discovered the talents of Kevin via UA-cam videos. The five of them met face to faced and rehearsed the day before their Sing Off audition. After The Sing Off the record label they won dropped Pentatonix saying a capella wouldn't make money. They had all just moved to LA (living in the same building). This was a crushing blow. So they started a UA-cam channel that was so popular that they were signed to RCA records. Avi left amicably in 2017 due to the fast pace of life with the group. Matt joined for the holiday season in 2017 and was made a permanent member afterwards.

I agree they have an amazing chemistry from knowing each other so long. I watched the videos of Pentacon Parents panel 2016 and 2018 and realised that the deep connections extended to their parents. I think Scott takes after his mother who seems to be a mother to them all, at least the trio at that stage. The group bonded so well with Kevin, and Matt's parents spoke of the warmth and inclusiveness they and Matt had experienced. I can't help feel they have something very special and unique that allows the group to grow and thrive. You can't fake something like that, the combined wisdom and support that they all give to each other. Added to the extreme talent they all have, it's something that isn't easily developed, it's just there.

Honestly, PTX might change your mind about Xmas music. Their latest (minus this video) release is Over the River featuring Lindsey Stirling and it's EPIC (promise it won't make you cry)! Lindsey, if you don't know, is an AMAZING violinist and Kevin plays cello in the song too. DEFINITELY worth a listen. Or if you want to bop along to something you don't think you should be able to bop along to try O Come All Ye Faithful. Their Mr Grinch is also amazing! I think part of what you like about this song is the dissonance and resolution. The dissonance (when there sounds like a note might be wrong, scraping against another note) is meant to build tension, and the resolution of that dissonance gives a release and the listener relaxes. This song is chock full of dissonance and resolution, and it's just amazing. I almost feel tired after a song like this, it's so good.

I’ve always thought that they are actually singing this song to each other. They have a spiritual connection to each other, that transcends the mundane It’s why it’s so powerful, and why we feel it like they’re singing to us. They are the pinnacle of their profession, other bands aspire to, and emulate their greatness. Unfortunately for them, PTX doesn’t stop getting better, setting the bar even higher. That’s only good for all of us, because we get to hear others who would stand on their shoulders.

Home Free is releasing another new song today at 1 pm EST. Three in two weeks! "Christmas Ain't for the Lonely " Watched their livestream last night from the Ryman in Nashville. Of course, they were great. Luckily when they perform in Nashville a livestream is usually available. Usually one of the guys will be in the chat during the premiere.

Magic, angels and aliens. It's the only explanation. I pretty much hated christmas music before I started listening to Pentatonix. Now I'm bopping around the house singing christmas songs with PTX. WHAT?
    Magic, angels and aliens. 🦄🐲✨👼🏻👽💚

I don't know when Kirstin first met them, maybe the beginning of high school or maybe they did some community theater earlier; but Scott and Mitch have been singing together since age 10. And that is a big part of why PTX is so good, but of course it takes a massive talent to be able to sing together so well. And one of the keys to PTX success is that they all genuinely love each other, they clearly have joy in being together. This is the only band I've ever seen make a video where a departing member says goodbye and the love for him literally oozes out of it. I am sure this group will be together when they're 70.
Some time check out the two guys in Superfruit which is not acapella but is just as stunning. You'll see them just being wacky friends and cutting up while making music...

  • @Blue-rl5dp
    @Blue-rl5dp 3 роки тому

This song was written just for this-- five part harmony acapella. Even half way decent voices is good. You give it outstanding voices and it becomes divine. There's a clip out there somewhere of Avi singing this with some of his Acapella Academy students. It's unrehearsed and they're just testing it out but you can tell the really special singers from the simply good ones because they get the feel of that harmony.
You'll note please, these guys are singing with their eyes shut. They're not watching for visual clues for their timing, they're listening and feeling. When it's their turn to come in or break off most singers, especially duets watch the breathing and lip movements of their partners. These guys never miss a mark and they do it with their eyes closed. This isn't just talent, it's gifted.

That's Live?? That's Live!!!!! LMAO! "Mitch wins every ugly Christmas sweater contest this year"!!! Great quote! Magical, just purely magical! I agree all of them are very good and fun, but..these guys are Magic. OOOh nice term Pentamagic!! Love it! Yes we know what you mean...Great reaction man! Try an early EDM original "Love Again" or "Oh Come all Ye Faithful" you will never hear that song the same LOL.

The trio are very close. Scott and Kirstin always talk about how great Mitch's voice is. Mitch said his favorite songs on The Lucky Ones ( their second original album are two Kirstin wrote because her writing is so good. Scott posts throw back pictures on Kirstin's birthday of when they dated in high school and how much he loves her. ( He is gay but wasn't out then). They are posting some behind the scenes stuff from their tour on the official channel. They react to things as such a unit it is really funny.

Their version of "Dancing on My Own" shows off the magical chemistry of the trio (Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie) with Keven cello-boxing. It was after Avi left (one of the hard times) and before Matt joined them. You'd probably really enjoy it.
You are definitely right - there is magic with this group. I've been a fan since the beginning (10 years ago) but they still move me every. single. time.

I just love how you look like you're in pain or disgusted when it's just TOO BEAUTIFUL.
As for the chemistry between Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch... fun fact; they have all dated each other in their youth! Not at the same time, but separately. There's a lot of information to be gleaned about them from Superfruit videos (could be a fun thing to do like a Story Time type thing. Non-music Superfruit videos.) I know there are Superfruit interviews out there too where Scott and Mitch talk a lot about their past and story, which inevitably brings in Kirstin and their friendship with her and forming the group.
