    Probably the best Prius battery removal tutorial I've seen.

  •  11 місяців тому +10

    Good guide, thanks. Let me note that the blocks for gen 2 battery are numbered from the other end, i.e. the block next to the ECU is #14 (not #1). Inserting a whole new battery array in the reverse order does not cause functional issues, but it may confuse the service, if they want to replace some faulty blocks later.

      took this as advice while doing this upgrade and I have to report it needs to be the layout in the video, even though mine was also in the direction you described when I opened it up. When I repeated descending from ECU order, the top and bottom alignments of the busbar pick-ups were switched and this caused the long, black-wrapped cord that only attaches to the far end negative pick-up to not lie flush enough to its pick-up. So it needs to be ascending from the ECU for these kits (being extra explicit not as any attack; this is information not in any other videos I've seen and I would have appreciated it myself in the process so it is for other people coming across this video and being confused about the order-switch)

    •  5 місяців тому +3

      *This* set of aftermarket cells seems to only get installed in this (reverse) order, indeed. The standard order can however be important if you use an ODB2 tool (like Dr Prius) which shows the block numbers descending from the ECU. If the tool shows block #14 faulty, you need to make sure that the block next to the ECU is replaced not the one on the far end. Probably some extra effort of relabelling the blocks is needed after installation to avoid costly mistakes later.

      And of course I have read this after I've put the cover back on 😓 but I will use a sharpie or paint pen and pop a note about this on the battery cover, since hopefully it will be a while before I would need to remember this info.

      Yes. Notice that the danger label is facing the rear seats (front of car). It's upside down when viewed from the back, where you're working. Did these batteries get installed from the inside of the car??? Why number them backward. More confusion.

    You know that I pulled a back muscle by lifting with my back, Doc said to use your leg muscles to lift, just saying and maybe that's what you meant to say. Good video.

      I recommend using a plank, like a bookshelf size (or 1 x 8 or so) between the battery area and the bumper of the car. You can slide/push/pull the battery case up the plank and over the lip of the bumper, avoiding the worst of the big lift, and the hurt on your back or scratch on the bumper.

    • @alext8828
      @alext8828 2 місяці тому

      @@cawag98 Yeah, it's very heavy and the positioning is not good on your back. Use a plank or do the whole thing in the car. This is not an easy job.

    Don't forget to check the HV battery fan for junk and the filter for more junk. A blocked filter or fan can contribute to HV battery failure. It took me a total of 30 min extra on my first time working on the battery, so it's not hard and very worth your time.

      In my 2008 Prius I had Toyota clean the hybrid battery fan and a filter was put in the air intake right next to the seat. I don’t have pets, but I do wash that filter

    First terminal off a pack should be one in the middle to again cut voltage in half. Never have both hands around high voltage. Use one hand to remove jumpers/bus bars so there can never be potential from one hand, across chest to other hand. In fact, right hand is safer since heart is on left side.

    Tried looking up a price for a Gen 2 Prius from the place listed for this battery. They are not very upfront about their pricing. Makes me nervous when a company isnt totally upfront.

    I just replaced mine last night, same as the one you did yours. Started the car and looked fine; however, once I pulled out of the driveway, check hybrid system turned on. Also, check engine, stability control and warning lights. The battery fan started blowing super hard as well.
    I put the computer and code 3021 indicating that block 11 becomes weak shows.
    The battery seller told me to start just the dash board for 5 min and the engine. It did not work.
    Any possible ideas?

    • @ValleyMobileAutomotive

      Aceleration puts a large demand on the battery. I suspect either a bad battery cell pack or a loose connection in the installed wiring harness. I suggest removing the battery again and double checking all connections and taking voltage readings of each cell pack. Let us know how it goes.

Then I went back to original Toyota battery $1800 by dealership online discount, (must shop around online l) drive 110 miles to pick up my self. Only sharing. I replaced myself as per videos. What causes battery fires?

    • @ValleyMobileAutomotive
      @ValleyMobileAutomotive  6 місяців тому

      Nimh batteries are very stable and aren't prone to fires. But most typical battery fires are due to shorting out creating a massive amount of heat. Also overcharging with high current can cause excessive heat build up. Lithium batteries are more notorious for overcharging and shorting inside causing it to catch on fire.

      I hope the new battery cells from electron hybrid are decent... decided to save almost $2k by rebuilding with after-market vs Toyota OEM. Expectation is 5 years, hope to get more though.

    • @snoobler
      @snoobler 4 місяці тому

      @@Hiker_Mike Nope. If they look like "D" cells, they're Chinese made garbage. There's a reason Honda hybrid batteries failed long before Prius prismatics... they all used "D" cells, but those were made by Panasonic and Sanyo... NOT China.

    Toyota OEM Quality
    vs
    Aftermarket Made in China
    My biased is on Toyota OEM because quality & reliability is peace of mind....
    Made in China
    Aftermarket
    No retail network or local presence or only online ordering with no after sales support
    Sub par quality
    Orange plastic deterioration and unreliable interlocking
    Self discharge rate high
    Nimh D cell size cells no comparison too Toyota quality
    Sellers
    Some dude on Prius chat, eBay, Alibaba, AliExpress
    None of the people who have used the Made in China all orange 🍊 hybrid battery packs have done long term reliability updates or satisfaction follow up after a 1 year
    Personally the Made in China hybrid battery packs based on nimh D cells are worthless
    Prove me Wrong

    • @ValleyMobileAutomotive
      @ValleyMobileAutomotive  6 місяців тому +3

      Challenge accepted! I'll do a one year battery update on this same vehicle and see what the deterioration is. The nimh Toyota batteries are made by Panasonic. I wish they sold individual modules or rebuild kits for consumers.

    • @Hiker_Mike
      @Hiker_Mike 4 місяці тому +1

      Agree that Toyota OEM has the best quality/endurance but it also costs $2k more for a "new" battery. I only want 5 more years from my 20 year old Prius so I'm going with new cells from Electron Hybrid.
