My advice below, after completing the operation. Best tutorial here, thank you! Well worth the effort.
    Tips / Hacks:
-Schedule several hours to do this, esp first time
-Tablet or laptop to watch video while working (phone is too small)
-Pill box to keep like screws together in order (one w/ the weekdays, any drug store)
-Two med boxes, one on either side of car for dash components as you remove them
-Empty your front seats, floor, both glove boxes (remove the bottom one entirely, with support under, and keep contents in). You don't want anything in the way during this.
-Tools: Long needle-nose pliers, small phillips and flathead screwdrivers (one long, one right angle), rachet wrench, 10mm and 12mm sockets, bits w extensions for socket and screwdriver, cordless impact driver, compressed air, microfiber cloth, shop vac
    - Trim tools, a small plastic pry tool (spudger), and a plastic crowbar like the one shown. Also some pincers to remove wiring harnesses. All I had were metal pliers and screwdrivers, which chew up the small clips and fasteners you will encounter throughout this operation. Each harness has a different release mechanism, either button on front or two tabs on sides.
-Pull the vent panels from UNDER the dash first to remove. The tops will be brittle from UV exposure and break on you. Gently pull them off bottom-up while supporting top. I destroyed one from trying to pry from the top. Save the pieces if this happens, you may be able to superglue back together later. Otherwise, they are relatively cheap to replace.
-The biggest PITA across the board is dealing with plastic clips. Take your time and be gentle. Use a small flathead or plastic tool to pry up clips. Pincers or small needle nose pliers to squeeze sides of wire harnesses to release them and wiggle out. The barb-type clips are the worst. They insert into holes and expand. Pry those up from all sides and pinch to work loose.
-Two 12mm bolts under the glove box were very tight on mine. They are difficult to access as well. Use the extension and you may need a breaker bar or tap the wrench handle w/ a mallet to get them lose, then unscrew with a drill. Be careful, you can easily drop screws and bolts and lose them. A magnet on a wand or stick might help once unscrewed.
-Once you get the dash out, there are two types of screws to get to the combo meter: small black and the larger ones. There is a wire harness clipped across the front of the plastic protector that I found easier to move out of the way. Remove screws as directed to tilt the assembly up so you can get at that last screw at the bottom of the protector. You will need a long and small screwdriver to get to it. Once out, pop the tabs all around the perimeter of the white plastic protector to release it.
-Be gentle releasing the blue ribbon wires from the meter. Instead of pinching, you slide the tabs out on the sides to release the ribbon as indicated. I broke one off, fortunately it was on the old meter but you need to be careful. This is a critical part of the operation, though I found it the easiest.
-Zip everything back up on the dash and reinstall wire clips.
-Before replacing the dash, you may want to take the opportunity to vacuum and dust in all the crevices under and around while you have it out. Compressed air can be used as well.
-Yes, getting the dash back in place is awkward. Get another person to help if you can. Make sure it's all the way forward to the windshield and line up your clips. Plug your center speaker in FIRST (if you have one) before dropping in.
-Take your time with the rest of the pieces. Don't force anything back in place--most likely, something is misaligned if it's not snapping in. Back it out and inspect where the tabs are supposed to go, then line up and drop in from one side first.
-Make sure you plug back in ALL the wire harnesses properly and screws go in the right place. Last thing you want is to have to disassemble again because you forgot to plug in the parking brake or airbag.
-Good luck! I'm glad I did it and saved $800+ at the shop.

Did my 2008 Prius today. Video was a great help. I purchased four new AC/heater vent trim pieces ahead of time. Good thing. Even using the lightest touch the 16 year old plastic was too fragile to remove without breaking. All other plastic was okay. My greatest difficulty was carefully disconnecting the various electrical plugs. It seems each one comes apart differently from the others. Best tutorial I have found, thank you!

i just did this! had never worked on my own car before so i was nervous going in but this tutorial was there for me the whole time! after a year of dark dash on and off, it’s like having a brand new car! and i didn’t even need to buy any new tools. if you’re in doubt, you can totally do this! i labeled all the screws and bolts i removed with masking tape so i wouldn’t forget where things went and also labeled the connectors that i unplugged with tape just to avoid any guesswork.

Amazing, you guided me to the finish. One note, my capacitor read 106 and I thought that I had wasted my time tearing out the dash. Deep in a distant post somebody mentioned that their capacitor seemed good but they replaced it with another and everything worked. I spent the morning tearing my beloved Prius apart to get access to, and replace, this faulty capacitor. I wish I would have come across this video earlier as I’ve been driving around without an instrument panel or backup camera for almost a year! Dealer in Gainesville, FL wanted $825 and needed my car for 3 days to do the work. Note to DIYers - you don’t need any special tools to disassemble the car (I bought a set and didn’t use them) but remember that some of the plastic can be very brittle after being in the sun for many years. Be gentle. Also be extra careful taking out the faulty capacitor so as not to damage the circuit board. Again, be patient and very gentle. Works like a charm and took me about 3 hours start-to-finish with only basic handyman skills and know-how. Thank you!

Great video! I ordered a meter from Texas Hybrid Batteries and replaced the meter today. Probably took me 3 hours with plenty of breaks, and I disconnected the battery terminals. I have a 2008 with the extra speakers, and the only difference besides the speaker on the dash needed to be disconnected is the glove box and passenger air bag area was slightly different, but easy enough to figure out. The airbag connector itself is trickier than it looks in the video at first glance. After struggling with it I rewatched the part about 5 times before realizing the trick. The tab doesn’t pull up or push in like most connectors. There is a spring loaded lever that must be pushed towards the connection.

I just completed this today. I viewed several other videos on this topic. This one is the most concise and no-nonsense.
-Pulled out MFD (middle touch screen) but left connectors attached and propped it a little lower on dash so that I had room above it. It was somewhat in the way but manageable. If you have few connectors like in video, then disconnect. Otherwise my method is an option.
-Removing the electrical connectors on all the various components is frustrating because it’s often hard to figure out how they release. Each one seems to be different. Follow the video but realize it might take you some time anyway because they don't pull apart and the release mechanism is sometimes hard to find or press.
-Long needle nose pliers are a must-have tool for releasing the A-pillar covers (along vertical sides of front window). I just happened to have an 8-inch plier and I'd say that's the minimum size you need. Anything smaller and you probably can't get far enough under the cover to be able to twist it 90 degrees.
-As mentioned in the video, the round plastic screw covers in the upper glove compartment are a pain to remove. After struggling with one, I figured out a way easier method... drill a hole in the center large enough to insert a small philips screwdriver. Then you can easily pop them out. It takes about 1 second to drill through the plastic cover, so do it gently to avoid messing up the screw head behind it.
-There's no need to remove the passenger side vent that's next to the door. Leave it in place.
-To minimize frustration and breaking plastic parts, get some plastic trim removal tools like shown in the video. They are under $10 and available at Harbor Freight or Amazon.
-And if you are thinking about replacing or upgrading the speaker in the middle of the dash, do it in conjunction with this project. It was labeled as JBL 86160-0W890, and part #22504-F0041. Mounting holes are 9.2cm apart. Circle in dash is 2 3/16 diameter. I didn't measure the depth and I can't remember how much space below it is available for a deeper speaker.

Repaired my 2007 Prius capacitor problem with your instruction and encouragement. I am not that young and not very handy and your explanation was excellent. The silver plastic dash trim pieces all shattered upon disassembly but replacement was $40 for all 4 and 10 capacitors were $7 so your video saved me at least $900 and allowed me to work through my fear of failure. Thank you so much!

I am 68+ years old and need to have the combination meter in my 2009 Prius repaired, as the dash often goes dark. I have been reluctant to be taking my dash apart, just to get to it. However, after watching your UA-cam tutorial video is a big help in deciding to go ahead and do it. I saw where a 67 year old woman did it, so that was a deciding factor, don't have a garage, so will have to wait for decent weather. I have done other projects on my car with help of You Tube videos, been very helpful. I am somewhat mechanical inclined, will be working on details on where to send the unit once it's out of the car. Thank you so much!!

Note: If the car has been parked mostly in the sun in warm weather (like California) for the last 16 years those panel parts have become very brittle from the constant sun exposure and could practically break apart in your hand while you try to pull them out. Proceed with caution. Give them a straight horizontall pull.

This video was the only reason I attempted this replacement. It went very smooth, just be sure you have one or two small plastic pry tools to help you loosen up the top and bottom of the vents. In addtion to the small plastic pry bars, (I suggest two), will need a medium phillips screwdriver, a small phillips screwdriver for one screw, a 10 and a 12 MM socket, one socket extension, a rachet, a pair of needle nose pliers, a very small screwdriver (to pry off the caps in the glove box) and the patience to follow the instuctions in this video. I purchased my Combination Meter from Texas Hybrid Batteries, they shipped it promptly, and it was well packaged. I wil be shipping my orginal back to them for deposit/credit. Thank you for posting this very well done video. My local repair shop told me they would charge me about 150.00 to install. Video saved me 150.00 and the satisfaction of completing.

Thank you so very much for this! It was pretty intimidating seeing my dashboard in my trunk, but your video is so thorough and everything worked out perfectly. We ended up soldering a 220uf capacitor the old one’s place and I can finally see how fast I am going and how much gas I have. All of my vent trim cracked, it was sun beat from being in Florida most of its life. So $100.50 later instead of $1000 later, I feel like I have a new car.

Excellent DIY video! I got this done, plus refinished the clear combination meter bezel with a 3M headlight kit as it was chemically scored up from some abrasive cleaner. I cleaned all the vents, soaked everything plastic with 303, dusted everywhere and then used a drop of triflow on all the connectors so next time it will pop out easy. I got a replacement meter from Texas Hybrids and it worked fine on start up after about 30 seconds before it would let me engage drive or reverse. So glad you made this video for us and I was able to figure out how to go deeper to get the bezel out for refinishing so now I can see my dash info with the lights working. I agree, lose the useless screw covers in the upper glove box, who would ever notice or care about 2 screws showing. BTW, I had the center speaker on top of the MFD, you just pop out the speaker once dash is loose and then unplug the connector. My airbag pigtail connector was not connected to the rear of the glovebox, it was attached to a metal piece behind the box, it was easy to undo and get back into place. This should have been a full recall, toyota should take responsibility for this design fault. Instead they take advantage of their customers who lack DIY skills to do this job and profit from their poor engineering.

Thanks very much for this video! I have had many of the dash components out of my stepdaughter's Prius before to put in a stereo, but those steps did not take me all the way to getting the top of the dash out. I replaced the capacitor that was causing her multi-display to not work, instead of replacing the entire circuit board, but this video really made the disassembly and reassembly super easy. This video was a life saver. My son was given a near 2k quote from one of the toyota dealers near us. Even the one I like the most said it was a $900 at best repair.
My mechanic hates doing any kind of dash work. After I stumbled on this video, and he watched it, took him about an hour total. I ordered the cluster from those awesome guys in North Texas in the video. Painless & fast.
Only hiccup was one that hit many people ... the stupid air vent housing to the right of the steering wheel. That snapped like a potato chip as soon as he tried to touch it. Luckily there is a bunch at local salvage yard. I was happy to get out of this repair under $300

This is by far the best step by step video to DIY this problem. Just take your time. There is a good chance that you may break some trim pieces, which can be easily fixed with some epoxy. The trim with the park button can easily be broken. Also, for the airbag connector, the disconnect lever is a sliding action. I used a 220uf 16v capacitor, which I found a 5 pack on Amazon. Good luck.

The only thing I had difficulty with in spite of these videos was figuring out how to disconnect some of the harness connectors. I followed some advice on how to fix the combination meter (replace the 100 microfarad capacitor with a 220) instead of getting a refurbished combination meter. If I realized how bad my soldering skills are, I might have done what you did and had a refurbished board sent to me. However, my combination meter currently works, so hurray for good luck. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video and help out!

Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I just did this on our 2008. There were some very minor differences in the the airbag connector behind the glove box (on my model) but other than that all went well. I "discovered" that on my car there was no need to remove the small side-trim panels (on either end of the dash, below the door post covers). I forgot that step when removing the post cover and the entire trim panel remained attached to the bottom of the post as I removed it. Much less hassle.

What a nice video ,,I know it took you only 8 minutes and change the disassembly part but Ralph ( my 86 year old father in law) and myself completed this task (including putting a new cap on the board in about 2 hours AND I didn't break or scratch anything. GREAT JOB, , now he saved $1500.00 and it works great. He can't wait to go to the dealer who told him the part alone was 900 bills and throw that bad cap at him. LOL

Excellent video! I found the most difficult part of the reinstall was getting the Multi Function Display (MFD) mated with the dash correctly - If possible, I would suggest installing the MFD into the dash *before* snapping and securing/screwing the dash to the car. The seam between the MFD and the dash is mostly hidden from view, and I finally gave up on getting it perfect. Also, would like to reiterate the comment about how easy it is to break/crack the plastic vent pieces (yes, I cracked one on the installation). I could not have done the repair without this video! Good luck to all!!!

Thank you so much for this "how to"! I followed it step by step and got it done! I too did the bad capacitor replacement which requires some soldering experience and a fine tip iron to get on to the tiny pads available for the new 220uF/16v replacement. I found the most challenging part was fitting the dash top back into place; mine was kind of awkward and a little on the heavy side due to the center dash speaker and the tight fit up under the window. I sat on the center arm rest to get every all balanced before maneuvering into place. About 3 hours all said and done and only $5.00 for the new capacitor.

Excellent; I fixed my car. Well, I'll know for sure the next cold spell. Anyway, I took it apart and put it back together again, with only one new problem (airbag light is on); I'll recheck connectors. You have step-by-step instructions on disassembly and reassembly up to reinstallation of the MFD, then skipped reinstallation of the parts on the drivers side; two vents, dash above and below the steering wheel. Might be good to add that. Otherwise, you've saved me, and a lot of people, a ton of money and headache getting skewered by the dealer.
    Many thanks!!!

Thank you! It has been a pleasure to watch this video, makes me jealous that some are so handy!! I see myself messing up 15 other things instead of fixing my problem!!! The dealer (steal-er) said that the whole dashboard should be replaced!!! Probably thousands!!! And isn't this ironic that Toyota will fix this if the car is less than 9 year old!!! I have a 2007 Prius (bought it in Jan 2007) and it started to have this issue this spring right after the car turned 9 years old!!! For sure they know that this issue will be more frequent with the cars built before 2007!! it does this randomly and than the problem disappear; and I am sure too that is an electronic component as it behaves this way. Fact is that I love this car and served me w/out any problems for 9 years!! and i will buy a Prius again!! One more thing which can be just a coincidence, though I seen other posts mentioning it: first time it happened was after I changed the (original) 12 V battery. Hard to say, but I think Toyota should acknowledge that is a general issue and fix it free or discounted!!

Thank you so much, best instructional video on the internet! I really wanted to repair the combo display myself but couldn't find nothin on it. After examining my repaired board, I would put good money on the only thing these displays need to be repaired is a resolder on Q10, the only heat-sinked transistor on the board. Just my thoughts for anyone who might inquire. And yes, I cracked the air vent on the left side of the center console. It more like crumbled. I glued it back together and it survived but I may order a replacement off eBay. THANKS AGAIN!

Thanks! I replaced cluster with a rebuilt one. Took a few hours, your instructions were easy to follow. I did crack the center right vent...12 year old plastic tends to get brittle. I think the center right vent might be the most prone to cracking as there are very few used ones on ebay.

This was great! It made taking the combo meter out a breeze. I recommend if you have any solder experience to go ahead and try to repair the meter your self. There are videos of what you need to do but TLDR, it's usually just one capacitor and it costs 5 dollars for a pack of 10.

my cluster panel was started malfunctioning over two years ago and has recently not worked at all. I took my car in to the dealer a few days ago to repair a steering innovator shaft recall issue. they said I missed the combination free recall repair by one year. I used to temporarily repair it by removing a fuse under the hood. after a while, that method no longer worked. I replaced the 12v battery last week, hoping it would fix it cause I read online it may be a low voltage issue, then recently found out it is a combination cluster issue. your diy video is greatly appreciated! thanks again!

    • @Samson-cr3ly
      @Samson-cr3ly 7 років тому

as much as I love these cars, they are a real pain to work on. changing the battery on any other car is relatively painless. with this car, EVERYTHING is a chore. it took nearly an hour to change the 12v battery. remove this panel, that panel, these screws, those bolts...on and on. I wish Toyota made these cars easier to work on, like Hondas. I changed the spark plugs last month and I had to remove the windshield wipers and several other layers underneath just to have enough clearance space to remove the spark plugs.

This was excellent. Thorough and we'll instructed. I broke the two center vents but saved me a ton of money. Local Toyota quoted me $1200+tax. 😬 Ordered from Texas Hybrid Battery, they programmed it with my VIN and mileage and it cost $150. Make sure to plug in the white connection to the combination meter. I was so focused on getting the blue ribbons correct I did not reconnect the white clip to the meter and had to do it all over again.

Excellent video! Just finished making the swap. Our Prius is 13 years old with 247,000 miles on it, so there's no way that it was going to qualify for the "warranty enhancement". We live in a hot and dry area so some of the plastic bits were a bit on the brittle side. Had a few of the minor tabs break off of the vents, but overall everything came apart and went back together just as shown in the video. Thank you very much.

When removing the two 10mm machine screws from the touch screen, I placed a rag below the screws to catch the screws if dropped. I learned this by spending agonizing time fishing a dropped screw from the driver side of the touch screen unit with a magnet. Great video with nice sound quality.
