Getter Robo was created by Ken Ishikawa. Go Nagai's a co-creator, but Getter Robo's actually Ishikawa's baby. Nagai would inherit the rights to Getter Robo after Ishikawa died.

That;s actually a bit of a misconception. They both workshoped the ideas for Getter Robo together and Nagai went off to make the anime, while Ishikawa made the manga.

That's actually a bit of a misconception. They both worked on the original story treatment and while Ishikawa went to work on the manga Nagai did some initial story boards and then went off to work on other projects while Ishikawa continued to act as a producer in a limited capacity.

Go Nagai only had the basic idea for Getter Robo, the true architect behind the group of sociopaths piloting the combining mech is Ken Ishikawa, who kept creating more Getter manga across the years. Getter Robo is a whole different monster than Go Nagai's creations.

@@DSMadara Saying Nagai helped is probably a bit of an understatement. He actually designed Getter 1 and was the one who came up with the idea for a combining mecha after he got in a car accident. Most the inertial concepts actually did come from Nagai. For the 70's version. Ken can be said to be more responsible for what Getter Robo ultimately became in the 90's.

You still shouldn't count out Ishikawa in the creation of Getter, he drew the manga from the get go and in places it's way more insane than Mazinger.

Mazinger z was basically a war drama about a bunch of child soldiers fighting a mad nazi scientist and his army of Frankenstein esque monsters and giant robots. I went back to watch it because its a historical mecha anime and i was surprised because i ended up enjoying it a lot. Fun fact its the first mecha show to have a female mech pilot and the sequal had the first black/female mech pilot.

Can really see the cross-influence of tokusatsu here in the early 70's mecha as well as the gradual transition to works aimed at more mature audiences as the years go by. As much as I'm broadly more of a fan of Real Robot, I do really love the bombastic pulp premises and wild villain designs of these Super works. Evil Machine Empires are the best empires, clearly.

Devilman transforms into a GIANT DEVIL in the 70s Anime, he does have the ability to fight as a human sized Devilman or transform into a Giant if he is fighting against a Giant Demon.
Also if the movie had the Female Demon who always had bad luck when she was trying to kill off Akira Fudo/Devilman, then I would know where this sits in the storyline before she dies 3/4 through the series.
(She disguises herself as a human woman in Akira's class, only to slowly fall in love with him before she gets killed by the King of Demons Zenon, makes me wonder if she took over the body of a human woman only for her human heart to change her)
Or if Miki somehow knew that Akira = Devilman who would often save her in most episodes, then it would have taken place towards the end of the series

Was AstroGanga aired in the U.S.? We in Italy had a craze for japan robots after the huge success of Grendizer, so local tvs bought and aired almost everything related to robots, including many Tatsunoko series like Ganga, Casshern, Tekkaman. We even had Babel 2 (Babil Junior). Never heard of Maken Liner or Zero tester, though. Looks like the premise is very similar to Jerry Anderson's U.F.O.
You gotta love all the Nagai crossover movies. There's a strong possibility that Casshern's arch-enemy Briking was in fact based on Mussolini, instead than Hitler. By the way, you haven't mentioned another great sci-fi Tatsunoko series, Uchuu No-Kishi Tekkaman.
And yes, Tatsunoko was really on the "upskirt" side in Gatchaman, but as for that, you can't beat the Time Bokan series.
Many Tatsunoko series were either excessively gloomy and sad (Casshern, Tekkaman), or just hilarious (Time Bokan)
A great review you have done, mate, keep going.

Instead of fighting Lucifer at the end he fight a demon called Godman or something. Look up Man with a Mission's song when my Devil Rises, it the 70s Devilman vs Godman with redesigns, because Go Nagai did the art for that album

Well, I was going to provide a correction regarding Getter Robo, but the Getter fans got around to that faster than I did. However, I still need to rectify you not mentioning that Casshern was one of the shows (among the different anime and tokusatsu) that inspired Megaman. Parts of the base story and certain characters were taken. In particular, Tetsuya opting to be turned into Casshern became Rock opting to be modified to become Megaman, Rush is Friender and Roll is Luna. Casshern's what Quick Man was based off of design-wise. The rest of the base story and characters actually made their way into Megaman X and even X2. For example, that first robot that went berserk, BL-1, a.k.a. Buraiking Boss, is Sigma and what happened when he got infected by the Zero virus. Dr. Light appearing as a hologram in the capsules is the same as Midori Azuma, Tetsyua' mother, appearing before Casshern to provide him with support. Lastly, Buraiking Boss's three main subordinates Barashin, Arkborn and Sagrey are Megaman X2's X Hunters Violen, Agile and Serges.

Real robots aren't piloted by super psychics and somehow have a transforming space fighter in them. Gundam may not be as wild as Mazinger or Getter Robo, but it's still a super mech in a real robot setting which kills it for me.
The Zaku 2 and the GM are more real robot and are more believable in the role.
