Mecha Through The Years - The 1960's

- Since the inception of Anime as a medium Mecha has been a powerhouse genre that produces hit after hit. While the prominence of giant robot fueled cartoons has waned in the last decade, it is a genre that has an incredibly storied history and today we begin our look back at the start of it all.

I feel like I should mention that this is in no way replacing full length retrospectives, and is just something I thought would be fun. this series will cover anime that I have already done videos on, and being featured in one of these videos does not mean that I won't do a full video on it. Enjoy!
Great video! It was great to see the roots of anime. Going to check out the series that I didn’t know about, other than the big two-Astro Boy and Gigantor.
It's pretty cool how Tezuka created the archetypal Shounen protagonist design. Like, you could probably draw a line between Atom/Astro and say, Deku from My Hero Academia pretty easily. That's pretty wild, how much one work of art could seed the imaginations for generations of future readers and artists.
11:40 super sentai AND kamen rider, which is actually the one he is more associated with as he (reportedly) had more influence the early seasons of Rider than Super Sentai.
Rider also sticks a lot closer to his signature themes (down to the whole 'kidnaped humans turned into cyborgs for an evil organization thing that is also in cyborg 009)'
As a player of Super Robot Wars series which contains a ton of mecha serieses, your videos are a Godsend.
14:40 OH MY GOD, I finally know why the final boss of the near future chapter of Live-a-live is a giant anthropomorphic bird statue.
That chapter is a gigantic callback to 60 through 80s mecha and cyberpunk anime and manga, so it makes sense they would reference cyborg 009 too.
I'm excited for this series!
The UA-cam channel MercuryFalcon has a good video about 70s mecha if you're interested. He was upset that most people go straight from Mazinger Z to Mobile Suit Gundam when talking about the history of Mecha.
I've been diving into Osamu Tezuka's manga, he's made some great stuff over the years, especially from the late 60s onward.
Correction those were made 50 to 60 plus years ago. Remember that anything made on or before today's date in 1963 would be 60 years old.
Im not ready to believe that yet, maybe next year lol
Something kinda interesting, parts of the Astro Boy aesthetic came from seeing Metrapolis stills and applying new ideas to it, much like how Hidetaka Miyazaki (of Dark Souls fame,) came to adopt his own unique style of storytelling.
This is also rather ironic, as Metrapolis was heavily altered (even losing whole subplots,) so the people who watch it basically have to do the same thing anyway, despite its own massive influence on media that came after...
I can't wait to see more from this series. Your retrospectives are incredibly entertaining, in all forms.
I always get hype when you upload, perfect toke content.
i have been playing super robot wars for a long time but never cared to watch any of the featured shows, thank you for helping my lazy ass to catch up with so much anime
Thank you! I had fun! I love learning about anime history through videos like this.
Anime history is underrated, thanks for making these gems more known! It amazes me how much cyborg 009 is in on piece
I love going through older mecha shows and it’s incredibly disappointing that two originators, Tetsuwan Atom and Tetsujin 28, to this day do not have completed English subs.
Oh, I really DO hope this turns into a series! This is fantastic!
Wow, the animation in Atom and Tetsujin really remind me of Dave Tendlar's stuff from the early 30s, I wonder if they learned from him or something. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this, and to seeing how many episodes the 80's and 90's take, so many shows.
I learned about Tetsujin from playing Super Robot Wars and became curious about it. Then looked for the actual show by 2008 and really enjoyed not long after watching the First Gundam from 0079 so I was getting use to the animation from those years.
Ohhh I can't wait for the 70s edition, and the 80s.
My friend and I were talking about mecha animes yesterday. We both felt like gundam was at it's peak from its inception up until around 2000. From there on you would get some stud and dud series. Gundam seed(dud), gundam 00(stud), 8th MS team(stud) etc. Weirdly, there were aot of obscure titles in the 2000's such as Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers that are never talked about and have been in a way, lost to time. The gundam series in the past decade or so have been very hit or miss.
I am only now just noticing that Dr. Tenma from Monster is named after Tezuka's Tetsuwan Atomu doctor/inventor lol. Also, it is super important to watch older anime and movies because the current zeitgeist is not all-encompassing. It lacks a circumspect worldview and has a tragically short term memory. To paraphrase Goethe, "He who cannot draw on (X) years is living from hand to mouth". There is a reason why Sunrise/Bandai have been making antiwar Gundam series again and again since the late 70's. Before Augus Mikazuki, Marida Cruz and Guel Jeturk, there was Ryu Jose, Four Murasame and Bernard Wiseman.
Hey man. This was great! I’m def excited about the next few chapters. And yeah the 70s/80s is gonna be PACKED
Really good video, would love to see more of old and iconic mecha anime’s through the 70’s and 80’s!☺️Love your anime mecha anime content, one of my favorite anime retrospective content creators!🥰
Very much enjoyed this. You talking about 009 reminded me of the 2001 reboot that I loved as a kid. Now I ki da want to go back and watch it again.
Decade by decade!? This is going to be amazing.
I look forward to the rest of this. I barely watch you retrospectives, as I don't like getting spoiled, so this is nice. I hope that when you get to the 2010's you talk about Knights of Sidonia.
I loved this! I'd be super down to see more in this video series! I always look forward to your videos, thank you for the excellent content!
Ahh the origins of mecha, it’s fascinating to see what people came up with back then, blazing new trails and all that. There’s probably dozens of video essays to be had on postwar Japan and how giant monsters and mecha were used to convey various messages in media like about nukes and shit.
8:55, *Dick Strong*
Would love to hear your opinion on more recent mecha as well , 86 would be a modern mecha series that would knock your socks off if you’ve never seen it
Keep going. I love hearing about the old and the origins of some of these types of anime. Love mecha, bro. I picked up a few nice echii mecha from the 2000s or so.
This was a fun watch. Definitely educational. Stuff like this, seeing the start of big names and genres and how they change and evolve, is endlessly fascinating to me.
Cyborg 009 also led the Mangaka of that series to make his other Live action Series Kamen Rider, which took inspiration from Cyborg 009 story same with his super Sentai series.
I'm still shocked you have not got around to speak of casshern sins. I am here for whatever vids you drop as they always peak my interest, so ill be awaiting for that 70s mecha influence, More specifically a gander at casshan* correction 😶
I remember the New Adventures of Gigantor and that theme song is great! If you can find it, it’s a great watch.
Osamu Tezuka's Experimental Animations are also worth checking out from Tales of a Street Corner from 1961 to Memory in 1963 as well as Broken Down Film from 1984.
Even if these are only just one episode films, some even lasting only a few minutes, they do convey a insight to early Japanese Animation from Osamu Tezuka and how he tried to push Japanese Animation around the world.
Would love this as a series and enjoyed the vid!
It was fun to see ghostship after watching alot of Ishinomori works in tokusatsu
I saw my boy Fukamachi!!!! Great episode and look forward to more of these
Looking forward to more of these amazing videos from you, this is a really cool idea.
I support your endeavor! I hope you don't fall off on the series like another series like this did when they hit, year by year, 2016 or so?
The other series will help likely help as a reference for stuff you might miss. Super Robot Wars categories on gamefaqs also have Mecha series lists for the more obvious "giant robot" genre we've come to love.
I also have a huge collection of Mecha on DVD if you even need me to grab some footage!
This was a fun watch, and I both want to see and pre-cringe at the idea of some of the ones from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Cyborg 009 had such a similar story to the original Kamen Rider show and Manga. Besides the Cyborg team I would say it’s very close. Pretty sure that guy made kamen rider too.
This was great! I think diving into the history of any genre not only provides interesting trivia and context, but also turns you into a more competent enjoyer of said genre and may even provide a whole new perspective given that these shows were made with completely different priorities and influences in mind.
These are great keep it up bro.
would love a year by year of this
Neat new feature. By all means, more please.
Very excited for this series, this is gonna be dope
Definitely continue this series! Love to see the later years
Yes the 70s the Era that boom the mecha genre
Hope this series catches on.
As a big Kamen Rider fan, I've had a passing interest in Cyborg 009. I should watch one of the myriad of adaptations at some point
10:47 you may want to watch the updated Tetsujin 28 series from 2004; it updates the original story but still keeps the story set I the post WWII era
Awesome video. Would make a brilliant series. Cheers.
This was fun and interesting. Definitely hoping this series continues! Many thanks!
pretty cool yeah I'd love to see the 70's
Surprisingly, I got into watching Gundam because of TransFormers, after I discovered there were transforming mobile suits & mobile armors. I think you should cover the Mecha genre up to current. I'm curious.
More of this please
How could you just ignore Jiro Kuwata's 8 MAN? Police detective is gunned down by criminals, but before he dies genius scientist downloads his consciousness into a robot body with superspeed. By that BAT-MANGA guy. Kind of a big deal to me as a kid when it aired on US television shortly after Astro Boy and Gigantor.
Weird this never came up on any of the sites I used to get the list of anime. I'll have to look at it and include it in the next video in some sort of "I missed this" segment.
This was great. I would definitely like to see more of this.
Great video as always!
This was awesome man!
This was a super cool video! Yet again, I have way more shows I need to watch thanks to you. Lol.
I haven't watched many older anime other than Gundam, so I'm gonna check some of these shows out for sure. I really like learning about older shows I wouldn't have seen otherwise. It's just hard to understand how some people don't like older animation. For me, that's where I find the stuff I like the most usually. It just feels more special or personal in alot of ways somehow? Like, there's a bunch of aspects to it that leave a strong impression on you.
I've enjoyed this video. Hope to see more like it.
i vant wait for the rest of this series.
I just finished Pluto last night
Which is a modern and extremely gritty and dark adaption of Astro Boy
And it just came out recently
I know you cover mostly just the Japanese side of things but it should be noted that Marvel Comics Iron Man debuted in 1963 who you could argue is mecha adjacent
That's actually why Tetsujin was renamed Gigantor in the states too! I actually meant to mention it but it slipped my mind while writing the script.
I wish you dove deeper into Cyborg 008 more. His depiction and depictions of Black people in the 50s and 60s was only surface level. Manga took the time to explore the inequality towards Black people in its time. 008 was a slave (if I remember correctly), Blackjack talked about the civil rights movement in America and so on.
A lot of comics outside of America used blackface for Black people because they were coping from the industry leader (America). But everyone didn't reduce black culture to a stereotype.
I just don't think I could have fit it into this video and It deserves it's own video and full focus. If I ever do a Cyborg 009 series overview rest assured Pyanma will get a 20 min segment at least because that story is incredibly interesting and as you said there is a LOT to delve into beyond the surface level of his character design. Thanks for the comment!
@@Retcon404 That would be awesome. When I first started watching anime, I didn't think I would see Black characters in the cast, especially mecha. Then I saw the Hercules in the puppet mecha Star Fleet. And seeing Tapp with his own mech in Metal Armor Dragonar.
I continued to stumble on more positive Black representation in manga and anime and I love every minute of it.
Don’t think I ever thought of the reason they talked like that in the Speed Racer dub lmao
Have fun in totk I am sure having a great time with it
This might help you out a lot: Japanese Animation Guide: The History of Robot Anime
It's a 2013 paper from the Agency of Cultural Affairs of Japan. Yep, this is 100% official. It contains a chapters 1, 2 and 4. I've read it and it really shows how mecha anime and tokusatsu shows are so intertwined. It's really good read.
Looking forward to more videos on this.
Waiting for the day when Medabots and Daigunder show up
Insightful video.
It's funny, because I could probably mention a few of the English adaptations to my day, like Gigantor and he'd recognized the show from his own childhood. Fun way to connect about anime from someone you'd never otherwise think to get on the bandwagon, even if in some small way!
One of my first anime was Astro boy the 80 incarnation follow up by robotech and mazinger steel jeeg Gai king they pass it on locals channels in my country in the 80 Spanish dub tho
This was super cool
Love these
Kinda ironic I just watched ghost ship and 009 cyborg recently
I can't wait for any 70's ones you cover especially Mazan, you is a major "cartoon" in the Latino culture. No doubt you will have to do special one offs for the ones from the 80's.
I hope you cover Getter Robo Armageddon in some form someday...
does putting all of that "snow" / noise on top of the clips stop them from being flagged or claimed by the publisher?
There this one guy that did a Video Series like this albeit Year by Year when these Mecha Series debut but the name escapes me (too lazy to look it up for this comment)
As one black guy, I find those old racial stereotype, cartoon depictions extremely hilarious 😂
brave series
bro really mentioned Ishinomori and didn't bring up Kamen rider...
More please
Will he finally talk about Getter Robo??
20:10 As they say. The Past is a Foreign Country.
Astro Boy is dark
Did you get a new camera?
No but an extra light definitely helps
Dragon Ball had mechs in the 80s
Serieus question, what are you trying to pull with that Jesus look?
N E O N G E N E S I S E V A N G E L I O N P L Z
I like the concept but dislike the dub and American focus. Would be better if you talked about the shows themselves unless this series is a Western production history of mecha angle which I feel has already been done quite a bit, espeically if you were to continue this series for every decade.
I love meca anime!
