It's interesting, having gone through most of Tomino's work, there's this underlying desire to challenge the... simple admiration we in the audience feel about the mechs in our mecha fiction. That core idea of the titular Hero Mech being a friendly protector - or usually all-important saviour - is a base assumption in the genre, and while Evangelion may've popularized deconstructing and subverting that assumption with its cybernetic eldrich abominations, Ideon was here doing it 16 years earlier. Tomino would do something similar with the Turn A, King Gainer, and the G-Reco as well -- give rather friendly looking and overall quite benign designs to the mechs which would turn out to be secretively quite destructive and frightening weapons whose very existence are kind of problematic if not outright horrifying even if we in the audience are trained to root for them. I know Tomino found the toyetic aspects of his work to be counter to his intentions - which he's since reflected upon to become more content with - I wonder if that sense of distaste with people thoughtlessly idolizing weapons drew out the need to show how it's... unwise to emotionally attach yourself to them regardless of how they might appear.

I second this. Yes, it's true. Super Robot shows also can be as deep as the real robot show that came after them. Writing them off as only monster of the week shows for kids is misguided.
Thirded, I guess. Some good stuff in that era, and it's a mistake to look at the animation and production dates and write something off without more research. Which is a heck of a lot easier to do in 2022 than it was back in the dark days before the internet.
I think a big problem is that besides the Robot Romance trilogy being well regarded, the other Mecha shows from that period have more divisive opinions. Like I have no idea if the Mazinger or Getter Robo anime series are good or not if I should actually watch them. I’ve even heard that Mazinger Z is not good, but Great Mazinger is good, but in order to understand Great, I have to watch Z. Not to mention all the other mediocre Super Robot shows that make it even more confusing. Not to mention that this idea also exists pretty prominently in Japan, it’s not just a western thing.
@@thomasffrench3639 I think a lot of the ire over Mazinger and Getters' TV series is a western misconception that the Mazinger and Getter anime were somehow "lesser, less edgy" adaptations of the manga. With Mazinger, the anime and manga ran concurrently and one was never intended to be an adaptation of the other, and both are great in their own way. In particular, the Mazinger Z anime's influence is worldwide. As for Getter, while the anime is a "less edgy" adaptation, it has its own good points. The dramatic scenes were always on point, and its anime additions are a good time. Texas Mack is a legend.
There are some more cameos in the Buff Clan fleet. Musai cruiser and Pegasus class carrier in episode 34 and also a weird colored Gundam in episode 37.
Ideon doesn't really seem like a Super Robot show: while it does start that way, it ends pretty clearly in the Cosmic Horror genre, seeing as how the robot might as well be Cthulhu by the end.
This series produced some great plastic model kits. Had a lot of fun with them back in the 80s, and there are still bits and pieces of them doing service as wargaming terrain here in 2022. Best part was I had no idea what they were when I bought them, and neither did the store owner who'd dumped them in his discount bin. No English (or even Engrish) on the packaging or instructions at all. How they got to upstate NY I'll never know. Interesting series once I finally found out what the models were from and tracked it down for a watch.
One detail about this show that seems easy for many to miss: the show and movies’ music was composed by Koichi Sugiyama. Me [watching Ideon through fansubs back in 2007]: “Sugiyama? Why do I feel like Final Fantasy-loving me should know who that guy is?” (Googles his name) “Oh. He’s the Dragon Quest composer! That’s good to know…😅” This show has really good music, and the Be Invoked score is even better. The whole OST is worth your time.
I do love these longer, thought filled videos. I prefer hearing everything you like to share about your experience with these anime and don't mind the length one but. Good thing to sit down in the morning with a cup of coffee and some toast. Even if it's a series I am already familiar with, it's hella enjoyable to hear others thoughts on this stuff. Well done video and appreciate all your hard work! Be mindful of Editor Burn Out and work at your own pace!
I am starved for Ideon content - Thank you so much for making this!! If you plan on watching the movies (I really hope you do!), A Contact comes before Be Invoked. A Contact is like a recap movie that changes some major events around. Be Invoked is a retelling/expansion of the final episode that can come after either A Contact or the series.
(Man, I sure hope Retcon can cover the Igloo Gundam stuff so we can all see a proper thrashing to Seed Destiny.) (sees this thumbnail) OK, NOW you have my attention.
We meet again Ideon! I havent seen him since SRW Alpha 3 and im kinda glad! But man after watching the whole series and its been a few years since and yet it still hits hard... not to mention how traumatizing this was to younger me! Onto to SRW! When I started with Alpha 3 I thought Ideon was a joke since he had so little attacks... but as his HP goess down the more attacks get revealed like the Missile spam, Ideon Sword and the almighty Ideon Gun!!! (Goddamn that MAP attack is devastating even compared to the Yamato!). During the start of Ideon the cast of Macross 7 meet up with Cosmo and crew and eventually meet up with everyone else. I swear the Buff clan chases you around even if Ideon isnt with you, but theyre quite easy to take out and the EXP and money is always welcome! But where it gets dark in Alpha 3... would be the bad ending.. oh god the bad ending... You need to fight off the Buff Clan in a last desperate struggle and when everyone attacks the main ship their tone is sad and even hesitant... but when hot-blooded heroes hesitate you know shits going down! If memory serves right... after you defeat the mothership of the Buff Clan, Ideon goes wild and ends up destroying the whole universe allowing the big bad Keisar Ephes to claim the souls of our defeated heroes... yep its sad and you really need to experience it at least once. Also I've heard Ideon goes berserk when its IDE is full in previous SRW and shoots its Ideon Gun at you with zero care and when you destroy him you still need to pay the repair costs! If somehow you avoid the bad ending you'll be able to avoid the Buff clan and instead need to defend Buster Machine 8 I believe and you'll have Gunbuster and Ideon standing side by side ready to fight off the STMC! But in the good ending, Ideon ejects all the crew out and takes Keisar Ephes out pretty much saving the world...no the universe! And in the after credits you'll see Ideon floating in space deactivated... but as you see THE END you can hear Ideon restarting! So it's an overall good ending for the Ideon cast! (and the the whole damn universe!)
If you haven’t already seen it, I’d suggest Zambot 3. I feel like that’s the definite precursor to Ideon’s deeply oppressive tone. It’s also like half as long
Thank you man for the great video. Not going to lie the last couple of videos I had something crappy happen to me and you really cheered me up. Can we talk about how, according to a spin-off piece of media, The Gundam U.C. timeline is apparently the Universe that the Ideon created after destroying and resetting its own?
@@iwanttodiebutimtoobigofacoward I believe in said spinoff it is indeed extremely angry and tries to re-destroy the universe, forcing Amuro, Judau(who is a reincarnation of the afro guy from Ideon) and a few others to defy it.
I'm really grateful you aren't just covering gundam even though that's my main mecha interest. I'd really like to see you cover Aldnoah Zero and see what you think of its premise compared to something like Turn A.
Tbh you definitely should have watched be invoked with the series, the show is canceled before they finished making it so the final few episodes are rushed to hell and it's why it ends so abruptly, Be Invoked is basically a more complete version of the last few episodes, the scene at the end with Lou and the baby is like a ten minute sequence in the movie
Tomino doing a Hideaki Anno before Hideaki Anno made it popular. Edit: Wait. You didn't watch the Be Invoked movie? You haven't seen why they started to call him Kill'em All Tomino then!
This was a pretty good video. I hope you get around to watch the movies soon, as the second one, specifically, contains the true ending of the series (because what we got in the anime is basically a summary of its ending).
Tomino has indeed made many unknown masterpieces during his days of glory, aside of Gundam, and Ideon is another one! I just wish for someone to ever watch and make a review of Triton o the Sea (Umi no Triron) - his first and most obscure work (and the one that trumatized ME as kid - since it was my very first anime!!!).
Great video! Would love for you to check out Magic Knight Rayearth. It's a CLAMP series that's a mix of isekai, super robot, shojo romance, and magical girl anime that is extremely unique. IMO isekai was mostly downhill after it, and it's about a decade and change ahead of stuff like SAO. The manga is probably better, especially the second series/part since the anime deviates in some pretty dramatic ways, but the first series anime is excellent. The anime was directed by Hirano of Macross fame I believe. Good Smile Company just recently released model kits of the three main mechs from the series as well if you're into the hobby and want to see the designs.
Oh man. When I saw you uploaded this video I was thinking to watch or not watch? Cuz just the title sounds awesome. I decided to watch this entire video and was like damn I shoulda watched the anime xD. But I imagine it was a real roller coaster. Amazing video.
Hey man if you still want to experience some of the series without spoilers you should check out the two Ideon movies "A Contact" and "Be Invoked". The latter changes a good amount and expands upon the ending and ive been told they are very worth watching even if you have already seen the series.

ideon is said to be in the UC gundam universe, there's a theory that G-Saviour connects this, that ide is actually all of newtype become energy just like what camille used in Z Gundam to extend the power of the Z gundam's beam saber, besides there's chimera corp using quote "revenge of ide" in it's emblem and poster of char, amuro and haro in ideon, lol but the connector being G-Saviour is hillarious
@@nia1waifu107 my personal top 5 is 1) Char's Counterattack 2)Gundam movie 3 3)Ideon+be invoked 4)Zambot 5)Xabungle I don't want to be rude, but Brain Powerd is a terrible series, one of Tomino's worst works, I just don't get how someone could place it in their top 3....
A few things I didn't like. The sixth civilization being super advanced and ancient, having ascended to godhood, doesn't really translate in to their design language. The Buff clan has more alien design than the Ideon and its mothership. I also take issue on Ideon and the solo ship's interface being compatible with humanoids. What I actually don't like, is not the aforementioned though, but how both of these could be addressed very easily through narrative. Like for example the Ide is able to shapeshift the Ideon and the ship to something that the occupants feel more accustomed to and are able to use. Hence why Bes was adamant that the science team snuck the vehicles on the planet. They didn't look alien. They looked like human heavy duty machinery.
Please, do a legends of the galactic hero’s video! Probably the best space themed anime ever and it’s not even close. But also yay love getting new videos from you!
@@Cab895 oh yes, it snowballs in the best possible way. They are also remaking it currently and the first season is kinda meh, but 2/3/4 have just been better and better.
Could you maybe take a look at 2 strange animes? I'm sure it's your cup of tea, so to speak! 😏 - Schwarzesmarken (80s Cold War going HOT, but it's also mechs vs aliens, the title is supposed to be German, but for me as a German it sounds wrong 😅) - Future War: 198X (another 80s Cold War going HOT, this time movie IS from the 80s, even using the so called "Star Wars Defense Program" a year before President Ronald Reagon talked about the program in tv, this movie was quite controversal 🤔)
After you did Macross I went and downloaded Ideon 'cause I'd been debating which to watch first. Now you've done Ideon though and I'm back to having to decide 😆
I had a bootleg DVD set and I never got around to finishing it. I picked it up knowing it was sort of a proto-Eva series. I gave it away to a friend and I regret that I never watched the whole thing. One day I’ll have to track down a way to watch it (hopefully through legitimate means lol).
So it starts out as standard 80's Super Robot, ends up as a lovecraftian monster that can rival the Getter Emperor and Mazinger ZERO because two dumbass species couldn't see beyond their own bloodlust and hatred. I can see why people subscribe to the theory that the universe that gets created after this show turns out to be the Universal Century since the same shit keeps happening because the Federation seems to be basically filled with the same assholes that keep escalating the conflict in Ideon. Also for those thinking "wait this WASN'T the show that gave Tomino his "kill' em all" nickname!?" Nope, that would be Zambot 3, all I'll say is "Killer Queen" and leave it at that.
the main reason the theory exists is because of a crossover manga with Zeon discovering the Ideon and Judoh preventing them from abusing the Ide the crossover also implies Judoh is Cosmos reincarnated.
You really should watch the movies. The series was canceled early so while the first movie is just a recap, the second movie actually continues on from the anime and gives it a proper ending.
Dunbine might have been influential because of its setting and for having basically invented isekai, but it's by far not one of Tomino's best works it's kinda bad to be honest
@@evanerickson4217 you suggested people to watch it, implying the work to be good, and I contested that.
Baldios, Zambot, there's so much good dark 70s super robots.
There was someone who has a video with that angle. Just forgot who.
I’m pretty sure a bunch of other Super Robot shows have cosmic horror elements as well. Like I heard the Getter Robo manga is cosmos horror.
@@thomasffrench3639 Only the Getter Arc portion of the story gets into cosmic horror territory.
@@nicodalusong149 that sounds right
Super robot vs real robot distinction has less to do with themes and more with the powers of the robot itself
Such a happy and up beat opening song, this looks like a positive uplifiting show.... what could possibly go wrong?.... ^.^
Tomino got his name Kill Em All Tomino with the 1977 tv Mecha anime Zambot 3 a precursor to Gundam
ohhh shit I thought it came from the late 80's. cool
@@Retcon404 Tomino’s works are very fascinating to me & I think Ideon is in his top 4 of best works😇😇😇
The late 80's? Tf HOW? Do you not do research or use Wikipedia?
The Universe Slayer itself, Space Runaway Ideon!
Why do I feel like Final Fantasy-loving me should know who that guy is?”
(Googles his name)
“Oh. He’s the Dragon Quest composer! That’s good to know…😅”
This show has really good music, and the Be Invoked score is even better.
11:40 - Yes, sub-space. Although we have yet to see if they encounter Mario, Luigi and the other characters from Smash.
(Man, I sure hope Retcon can cover the Igloo Gundam stuff so we can all see a proper thrashing to Seed Destiny.)
(sees this thumbnail)
OK, NOW you have my attention.
It’s also like half as long
Man I really really really can't wait for him to review the movies too!
For more 80's tragic mecha anime excellence, please review Round Vernian Vifam!

I feel like it's Christmas every day when I see one of your videos! I'd love to see one on The Big O. Nuances man it's got nuances.
Thank you man for the great video. Not going to lie the last couple of videos I had something crappy happen to me and you really cheered me up. Today I got locked out of my car while trying to do some Christmas shopping in a city about an hour away from home. Thank you for this video man it kept me from the panic attack I was having realizing I didn't have my car keys on me. 🤣🤣🤣
PS.. I legit think it's funny that these coincidences happened, so I apologize if it came off like I was blaming you. If anything you help me through it
ahahaha well hopefully my vids popping up in your sub feed don't become an ill omen.
Oh man. You should have included Be Invoked. That's the best way to watch the ending.
"BEANS." Hahahahahaha your voice-overs here are some next level shit! Great watch!
Can we talk about how, according to a spin-off piece of media, The Gundam U.C. timeline is apparently the Universe that the Ideon created after destroying and resetting its own?
It must be really frustrated with the result after it even gave humanity a fraction of it's power to understand each otherbetter
@@iwanttodiebutimtoobigofacoward I believe in said spinoff it is indeed extremely angry and tries to re-destroy the universe, forcing Amuro, Judau(who is a reincarnation of the afro guy from Ideon) and a few others to defy it.
what's the name of that show?
@@NutriMM It's a manga.
@@DIEGhostfish oh ok... what's its name?
You want more Tomino Super Robot series? I suggest trying Zambot 3...
Yeah, pretty much a mandatory watch if you enjoyed (or at least were intrigued by) the series.
Personally, I think Cosmo is the illegitimate son of the painter Bob Ross.
I can see the resemblance
Tomino doing a Hideaki Anno before Hideaki Anno made it popular.
Edit: Wait. You didn't watch the Be Invoked movie? You haven't seen why they started to call him Kill'em All Tomino then!
One dead baby is fine for drama, two dead babies is pushing it.
( also can’t wait for igloo, it goes hard even though it’s outdated CG)
This was a pretty good video. I hope you get around to watch the movies soon, as the second one, specifically, contains the true ending of the series (because what we got in the anime is basically a summary of its ending).
Sold! I'm really interested to watch this show now.
Please watch be invoked. Definitely the end of evangelion of ideon. The animation is also stellar
Yes, very good. Better than End of Eva, if anything.
The strongest GM
Good Smile Company just recently released model kits of the three main mechs from the series as well if you're into the hobby and want to see the designs.
the god of gm
So we know know were was the inspiration for the human instrumentalziation from Evangelon, clearly is this Ideon :)
@@Retcon404 ty I will check it out
What about the two ideon movies? That true ending is a real cosmic horror!

I was always under the impression that was Super Robot
It is a Super Robot
ideon is said to be in the UC gundam universe, there's a theory that G-Saviour connects this, that ide is actually all of newtype become energy just like what camille used in Z Gundam to extend the power of the Z gundam's beam saber, besides there's chimera corp using quote "revenge of ide" in it's emblem and poster of char, amuro and haro in ideon, lol but the connector being G-Saviour is hillarious
Ideon the prequel to the Universal century, in my eyes lol

The Godfather of Apocalyptic Media & Doomsday Sagas! The Dark Legacy of Tomino excelled !
There is also a Yamato Easter egg I spotted in the crowd scene when they are departing the ship
Please, do a legends of the galactic hero’s video! Probably the best space themed anime ever and it’s not even close.

- Schwarzesmarken (80s Cold War going HOT, but it's also mechs vs aliens, the title is supposed to be German, but for me as a German it sounds wrong 😅)
- Future War: 198X (another 80s Cold War going HOT, this time movie IS from the 80s, even using the so called "Star Wars Defense Program" a year before President Ronald Reagon talked about the program in tv, this movie was quite controversal 🤔)
I got an AD right here. It was hilarious

As always thanks for this lengthy review. 🤘🤘🤘
After you did Macross I went and downloaded Ideon 'cause I'd been debating which to watch first.
Now you've done Ideon though and I'm back to having to decide 😆
…I am so looking forward to see an eventual Be Invoked video. Oh boy am I ever… :)
@@rdogg114 Ah, I was not aware of that, thank you.

Ideon’s roar inspired Eva Unit-1’s roar
Watch Aura Battler Dunbine. It’s one of Tomino other shows and is Gundam but with fantasy elements in it.
Dunbine might have been influential because of its setting and for having basically invented isekai, but it's by far not one of Tomino's best works it's kinda bad to be honest
@@frankjaeger2565 I did say it was one of his best works. I said that you should watch it because of it premise and I did like the show.
@@evanerickson4217 you suggested people to watch it, implying the work to be good, and I contested that. The show is way too long for no reason and the characters are uninteresting after the fitst few episodes. The character and world dinamics also are not that close to Gundam. There is no real reason to watch Dunbine unless you want to watch every work directed by Tomino or you want to see where the isekai genre came from
What is the tune playing during the spoiler warning about 3 mins in? I know that video game tune, but I can't place it, and it's driving me nuts.

The Ideon, probably. It has more firepower, though it's possible they score a mutual kill and the entire universe is fucked.
