Your like the first person to ever go over Kyomu Senki ALONGSIDE Getter Robo, and I praise that. Cause the two series is so intrinsically connected. Hell TTGL is a reference to BOTH for a reason. Hope that Kyomu Senki Compilation get the best FULL TRANSLATION it deserves. ...and other Ken Ishikawa Stuff, like Bug, especially considering GETTER ROBO ARC is gonna use Bug in the story.

I find it ironic that getter robo basically spawned from a toy company begging for something new to make their products from, despite getter robo being notorious for how difficult it is to make the design actually work as a toy

Also the arc anime is being supervised by Go Nagai to help finish it so hopefully we will get an ending and i can’t think of anyone better to trust than Kawagoe and Nagai
That's my main concern...as Nagai is the first one to be inconclusive and superficial...anyway I still hope to see Getter Saint Dragon and the continuation of the story.
@@star_platinumx9123 He is not always like that. Mazinger Infinity movie had a proper ending, and overall he does like happy endings. Unfortunately he is famous for Devilman, which alot of people don't aware it is a saga with many sequels.

Even though I've only finished the first part of the Getter Robo manga, I definitely feel that to some small degree, Ishikawa intended Getter to be demonic from the outset. It's an insanely powerful machine piloted by troubled, crazy ass teens. The kinda stuff Getter rays can do is wild, and keep on feeling ominous alongside the Getter Robo itself. Maybe I'm off-base, but that's how it feels. Badass video man.
Good things can come from bad sources, Getter Robo is a terrifying power and being held in place only due to the specific kind of crazy the Getter teams are(and then the Emperor exists)

I'm still blown away that magical girls and mecha are in a sense siblings! I'm the guy that only really knows Getter from Super Robot Wars from my love of Gundam but the hot blooded energy of Getter has always made it into my fav mechs of those games. First it was just for their bombastic music then I really noticed the detail main games give them so I became a fan from the outside. Great video!
Just to respond to one specific element of your vidoeo, regarding Imagawa's original plot for Change! Getter Robo. While we can never know for certain what he intended to do, Imagawa has a very distinct style and preference for certain storytelling trops that have appeared consistently in every one of his major works, from G Gundam to Giant Robo to Shin Mazinger, and I think it's a good bet he intended to give those same ideas a spin here. Specifically, I believe Imagawa was going to tie the origin of the Invaders very explicitly to Getter Rays. There are numerous hints towards this in the first three episodes, from the never-explained wreckage of Getter 1 that explodes into an outpouring of Invaders as it falls to the moon, to Stinger and Coen both being Saotome's former partners, to the revelation of Michiru's fate (which I have to believe got discussed early on enough for Kawagoe to carry the idea into his later half). Saotome might not have known what Getter was really capable of doing until the Michiru incident, after which he orchestrated faking his own death with Hayato's help so he could work on Shin Dragon in secret. It, along with Gou, (Not)Gore and (Not)Burai were meant to 'fix' the problem of the Getter Rays and stop the inevitable evolution of the Invaders. Moreover the effect the getter beams have on Invaders is very telling: they don't burn or simply explode, they start to hyper-evolve, growing multiple eyes and limbs before their physiology simply fails and they fall apart. Imagawa loves to do this thing where the villain he presents in the beginning is never the 'real' problem; it always turns out that they were trying to solve an even WORSE problem through desperate and often amoral means. Dr. Hell in Shin Mazinger wasn't just trying to conquer the world, he was actively trying to prepare for the arrival of the Mikene. Dr. Vogler wasn't trying to destroy the Shizuma Drive in Giant Robo, he was trying to fix the drives before their natural effect obliterated all oxygen in the atmosphere. And here, Saotome wasn't trying to bring about Armaggedon, he was trying to stop it by creating something that could actually withstand/control the unchecked evolutionary power of Getter Rays. That's why the area around Shin Dragon started shifting back into more primitive evolutionary states. It's literally trying to undo the progress that would send mankind right into the claws of the Invaders.
I defiantly agree with you, if Imagawa had stuck around he would have done his usual thing, and considering how masterful those first 3 episodes are I think that version may have gone down as maybe in my top 5 anime of all time, but reality aint like that and the Armageddon we got is still solid as is. That said though Imagawa's approach to morality would have matched up with the manga perfectly.
Hmm, that makes a lot more sense compared to the what I thought was going to happen, I personally think that Gore and Burai becoming corrupted when Go didn’t was due to forcing Invader infection on uninflected cells while Go’s cells coming from a dead infected Michiru made him stable and thus immune to the invaders
with the getter 1 wreckage i figured it would tie somehow into ishikawa's themes of reoccurrence and invaders were the hyperevolved getter team from some kind of cyclical intergalactic war
My theory is that Go has invader cells but perfected. I mean invaders and humans are from the same organic matter but evolved differently. Go showed he could control invaders. Second, Coen and Stinger said they made a huge mistake when they touched Go. Gore and Brie was hit by devolution rays and became invader-esque monsters. Their evolution path is different than Go's(Hayato said Go has memory of loved ones). If you read Imagawa's Getter manga, Saotome wants to pollute Earth with Getter Rays to keep Michiru alive. I think the idea is similar to Alien and other horror movies from the 80s.
I hope you enjoyed Getter Arc's anime as much as many others did. Ishikawa's legacy will never die and neither will Nagai's whenever he leaves this world. The anime's ending further enforces the cosmic horror aspect of the franchise, and I hope to see it continue be it via spin offs or alternate universes or even a sequel to Arc.

AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE OF A DOCUMENTARY! I've been a fan of Getter for over a decade, and seeing this franchise get the love it deserves from many different media (especially the Arc anime) just makes me overwhelmed with joy. You did THE definitive Ishikawa retrospective, going after every single spin off and influence in his carreer, as well as letting your heart and own experience with the Getter saga give it the energy it exudes. Excellent job, my man! Believe in Getter!!
Its such a beautiful video, covering so much of Getter Robo's life and legacy, and yet there's more to be found still, stuff like the various ways SRW has adapted and reapproached Toei Getter, Shin Getter, and Armageddon Getter being probably the most obvious, but I'm sure there's yet more things to dig for if you tried, and of course the many many many stories that inherit its legacy, such as GaoGaiGar and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Many Hearts Become One. Believe In The Getter.
This is the kind of content I wish I could see more people do on otaku media in the English speaking sphere of the internet: perspectives founded on genuine passion, effort, and of course, RESEARCH. The fact you put this altogether with no bias for history or key information is one thing. The fact that the only "bias" you show here being love is what makes this video truly worthwhile. There's a highly constructive sense of direction led by sincerity straight from the soul that I wish was more prevalent with these kinds of video essays. We need more guys like you on UA-cam, and online in general.

Getter Robo is my all-time favorite super robot series as well as the biggest inspiration for my indie comic, Primal Warrior Draco Azul. Seeing someone dedicate so much time and passion to such a complete, comprehensive, and in-depth retrospective was a joy to behold. I wasn't even aware of all the work Ken Ishikawa made in between his Getter installments and how much they influenced both the series and its later adaptations. Congrats good sir. You've not only done justice to Ishikawa and his creation, but have made a work of art that's sure to make more mecha fans believe in Getter for years to come!

I keep coming back to this video every so often as a memorial to the life and times of Ken Ishikawa. I look up to Ken Ishikawa (and subsequently Kentaro Miura) and most likely will for the rest of my life. His art boasts a reflective, and thematic stylings you just can't find in other media let alone manga (that I've experienced) I have a lot of respect for Ishikawa, his works, his life, etc. So it feels good to have such a comprehensive, passionate video to truly represent and tribute his life. I always forget about Ishikawa and that's a shame. He lives in Go Nagi shadow, but out of all of their combined works I respect Getter Robo the most for just some of the reason outlined in this video, and that was mostly Ishikawa.
Getter Robo: Armageddon is my second favorite Mecha anime, verging on taking the top spot. Despite being super confused when I first watched it, it made me want to learn more about the franchise. I even love the dub. It’s not perfect, but it’s as over-the-top and operatic as the story calls for. Thanks for the vid.

i've been coming back to this video for about a month now, i think. i regularly have it in the background while drawing, as if the creative energy of ishikawa's work and all the getter entries is channeled through it through some sort of eldritch mech magic. just watching the absolutely amazing bits of animated panels alone is enough to absolutely make my day (gotta say i'm in fucking awe of your godlike dedication, holy shit, that must've been a LOT of work.) keep it up dude, there's not enough videos with that much soul in them on YT, imo.

As a recent GR fan, getting into it through the Shin OVA roughly in 2016 and just learning more and more about it and how influential it and Ishikawa-san are is fun, it's even inspired my writing alittle. absolutely beautiful, watched this in one sitting. i've only seen Armageddon and Neo Getter Vs Shin Getter, but consumed a lot of SRW. This really made me want to watch New Getter and go back and read Go, Shin Getter and Ark, at the very least. Beautiful editing, wonderful audio mixing, deep knowledge, I was utterly enthralled. I got into the Getter series last year and reading all the Getter manga he worked on was part of my journey. I loved pretty much all of it from the art, to the characters, and story. I so badly wish that he could have finished Getter Arc.
If other successful toy driven franchises like Transformers, Ninja Turtles, and the like are any indication, there's something specifically about it being toys that occasionally uncorks a creator's primal sense of imagination. I've once heard the process described as like, tapping directly into the part of the brain that once got so much joy from simply spinning yarn using whatever's in the toy box. Makes an isoteric sort of sense why such works stand the test of time, there often a very distinct difference in vibe between something made for a mere paycheck, verses something fueled by enthusiasm.
As an author I absolutely adore the way Ken Ishikawa writes his main characters. Ryoma isn't a good person but he sure as shit is a hero. I have an immense respect for Ken Ishikawa and his legacy. He is one of my personal heroes

I'm in awe. What an incredible and extensive look at one of many important Japanese mangaka who has gone unrecognized in the U.S.! I've been a longtime fan of Getter Robo, and it's fascinating to see how much depth the series has. There are so many profilic and important artists in the anime/manga industry whose contributions go unsung in most fandom circles, so it's great to see one of them being given due credit!
I'll flat out say Cheese. I don't USUALLY watch 2+ hour videos on a whim let alone re-watch them unless there's a distinct passion in what's being talked about and I have to say this is still so good. I still plan on reading Getter sometime this year or next I hope but Ishikawa's creativeness is just my taste in batshit looney tunes that I have to. So thank you for introducing me to this lunacy I hope to envelope myself into eventually.

Amazing video on Getter Robo and all of Ken Ishikawa's body of work in general. I saw at least 10 chapters of High translated somewhere last year but I don't know where. As for SRW Cross Omega, you might call it lackluster but that game made the impossible possible. All the crossovers it got from all over the place were just so unexpected in all sorts of ways. Mega Man finally in some sort of SRW game, a Minky Momo crossover that actually points out how close Momo looks to Haman Khan, Obari appearing in the game as himself to give the Poputepipiku girls a mech of their own, Sakura Wars in a SRW game, other one off mechs from shows that don't even have anything to do with mechs being added into the game. It was at least amazing for what it managed to accomplish while it was active.
I've only watched Getter Robo Armageddon and New Getter Robo, of the two I heavily prefer armageddon in every way and didn't like Getter until I watched armageddon this might have to do with me not having seen any previous work of Getter Robo but having watched the video seeing that armageddon referenced and used stuff from previous entries makes me like it even more. What I'm also just really happy with knowing is that the combining mech trope comes from Getter which is a trope I like very much and you definitely convinced me to dive deeper into the franchise. I definitely felt your passion and love for Ken Ishikawa's works and Getter Robo. Thanks for all the info I'll keep this as a reference video to know what I want to read and watch.
Great video, i have a few versions of Getter robot, but I collect more Mazinger , Great Mazinger and mazinkaizer, by Go Nagai, Getter, Grandaizer, Gayking, Getter Dragon, Rydeen,are part of my collection, I love mechas, started watching Tetsuyen 28 in the early 70s and Mazinger z in 76.I'm 55 still a big fan, your not the only one to get emotional, I grew up with this , raised my 3 kids with it they are 35, 34, 24 years old now we share this with my grandson 7 yrs old today August 11th, thank you for a great video and history on Getter Robot.
Watching this video has really been an eye opener for me. I have admired Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa for a whlie now, but i never knew the true depths of his creation, his legacy and the power his name represents in the anime/manga culture and world. This is by far, one of the best videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. I sat down and watched this whole video in one go. I've always seen clips of Getter Robo Armageddon and had always got me curious and last year I sat down and got through the manga. That was an experience, powered through the main manga in two days and then got through the OVAs. The editing and the passion you bring to this video is on point. Thanks for also diving into his other works for us to check out as welll as diving gently into themes that Ken Ishikawa were also interested in and explored in his works. I'm definitely interested in exploring his other works and how he narrates those storylines as well. Sadly I was very turned off by getter Robo Darkness after my first binge of the series which made me leave out on checking the other stories other artists have made but thanks for putting down a guideline for the others. Would love to see a review on Getter Robo Devolution. I haven't gotten around to that series yet but to hear your thoughts on it in greater detail would be amazing. Can't wait for the new series as well. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for this! I was born in '75 so my introduction to Getter Robo was Starvengers on Force Five. Star Dragon (Getter Dragon) will always be my favorite giant robot. I used to build all 3 ships with legos and then build my own versions of each. I rewatched Starvengers over and over. I still catch myself calling each of the main characters by their FF names. It wasn't until years later that I found out what Getter Robo G was and that it was actually part 2 of a larger series. I randomly found the ADV Getter Armageddon DVDs in Bestbuy years later and was just blown away. Since then, I've gone back and snagged any version of all of the anime series I could get my hands on and then upgraded them as they became available on Bluray. I've never been able to get ahold of any of the manga as I didn't know it really existed, but I plan to grab Devolution on your recommendation. I'd love to grab the older stuff as I could never really get into the original anime series very much. I'd love to see if I can get into the manga more. I'm so excited to see Arc. Getter Robo will always be my first Giant Robo love and your documentary made me smile and choke up over and over. I'm so glad to find someone out there that loves these characters even more than I ever did and recognizes that there really is something extra special about the series in every iteration. I hope Arc will be popular enough to get the older stuff re-released in the States. WELL DONE! Thank you!

Thank you for this love letter of a video to the Getter Robo franchise. I rmb playing the Getters in the few Super Robot Wars games that I've played and was infatuated everytime I get to use the Getter becuz of how op and how much of a banger the song played alongside the atks and always wondered about the many different variations of Getter there are and the story behind them. This video finally explains all my question and I can finally say I understand all the epic scenes of Getter Robo from all the AMVs whenever I listen to a Getter song.
Just wanna say I’m a longtime mecha fan who has been meaning to get into Getter Robo for a while now. But, as with many franchises, I wasn’t sure where to start considering how many main entries and spin-offs it has. This video is the best breakdown I have ever come across. Your passion and respect for the franchise is very clear and I truly appreciate the work you put into this.
Well... Getter Arc anime surprised me in more than one way... One the one hand, I couldn't expect such an ugly CGI in such a modern product... On the other hand, I was so freaking in love how the caracters' designs (except Hayato) were close to the manga and how they literally exported some manga scenes into the anime! Plus the score was great! But none of those good sides won't be enough if not the script! Damn, it's a freaking awesome job they've done there! They've basically managed to adapt not just the Arc manga but a huge story behind it without messing it up! I can forgive all the ugly visuals for that!!! And Hayato... I guess it was clear from the final credits with the original manga panels that he's more than just a supporting character but a heart of the story (and the last episode and its credits are a valid proof of that statement!) Even though I might not totally like Hayato's design for being somewhat unnecessary cheesy (hey, he used to look menacing even in the very first manga!) I totally loved his character development and that the authors decided to show his inner monologue and emotional struggle (which has always been there in the manga as well but hasn't been presented this directly) And the ending... Isn't it awesome that they've managed to turn an unfinished story into a perfectly complete one without changing the manga's original cliffhanger? Despite all its imperfections, Getter Arc anime has won a special place in my heart. It managed to reasonably slow down the original manga's unnecessary quick pace and filled the gaps in its story. Apart from that, it paid a tribute to the the whole Getter Saga and its characters, which is totally awesome!!!!

Fantastic video, I was lucky to get into Getter as young as I did and I felt incredible when I saw the trailer for Arc. Getter Robo is truly one of the most incredible series to ever exist, and your video does it justice.

This is an excellent video and I am finally able to understand the Getter Robo franchise. But I wish to know, do you lean towards the left considering some of what you said in the review?
Your like the first person to ever go over Kyomu Senki ALONGSIDE Getter Robo, and I praise that. Cause the two series is so intrinsically connected. Hell TTGL is a reference to BOTH for a reason.
Hope that Kyomu Senki Compilation get the best FULL TRANSLATION it deserves.

I find it ironic that getter robo basically spawned from a toy company begging for something new to make their products from, despite getter robo being notorious for how difficult it is to make the design actually work as a toy

Even though I've only finished the first part of the Getter Robo manga, I definitely feel that to some small degree, Ishikawa intended Getter to be demonic from the outset. It's an insanely powerful machine piloted by troubled, crazy ass teens. The kinda stuff Getter rays can do is wild, and keep on feeling ominous alongside the Getter Robo itself. Maybe I'm off-base, but that's how it feels. Badass video man.
Good things can come from bad sources, Getter Robo is a terrifying power and being held in place only due to the specific kind of crazy the Getter teams are(and then the Emperor exists)

I'm still blown away that magical girls and mecha are in a sense siblings! I'm the guy that only really knows Getter from Super Robot Wars from my love of Gundam but the hot blooded energy of Getter has always made it into my fav mechs of those games. First it was just for their bombastic music then I really noticed the detail main games give them so I became a fan from the outside. Great video!
Just to respond to one specific element of your vidoeo, regarding Imagawa's original plot for Change! Getter Robo. While we can never know for certain what he intended to do, Imagawa has a very distinct style and preference for certain storytelling trops that have appeared consistently in every one of his major works, from G Gundam to Giant Robo to Shin Mazinger, and I think it's a good bet he intended to give those same ideas a spin here.
Specifically, I believe Imagawa was going to tie the origin of the Invaders very explicitly to Getter Rays. There are numerous hints towards this in the first three episodes, from the never-explained wreckage of Getter 1 that explodes into an outpouring of Invaders as it falls to the moon, to Stinger and Coen both being Saotome's former partners, to the revelation of Michiru's fate (which I have to believe got discussed early on enough for Kawagoe to carry the idea into his later half). Saotome might not have known what Getter was really capable of doing until the Michiru incident, after which he orchestrated faking his own death with Hayato's help so he could work on Shin Dragon in secret. It, along with Gou, (Not)Gore and (Not)Burai were meant to 'fix' the problem of the Getter Rays and stop the inevitable evolution of the Invaders. Moreover the effect the getter beams have on Invaders is very telling: they don't burn or simply explode, they start to hyper-evolve, growing multiple eyes and limbs before their physiology simply fails and they fall apart.
Imagawa loves to do this thing where the villain he presents in the beginning is never the 'real' problem; it always turns out that they were trying to solve an even WORSE problem through desperate and often amoral means. Dr. Hell in Shin Mazinger wasn't just trying to conquer the world, he was actively trying to prepare for the arrival of the Mikene. Dr. Vogler wasn't trying to destroy the Shizuma Drive in Giant Robo, he was trying to fix the drives before their natural effect obliterated all oxygen in the atmosphere. And here, Saotome wasn't trying to bring about Armaggedon, he was trying to stop it by creating something that could actually withstand/control the unchecked evolutionary power of Getter Rays. That's why the area around Shin Dragon started shifting back into more primitive evolutionary states. It's literally trying to undo the progress that would send mankind right into the claws of the Invaders.
I defiantly agree with you, if Imagawa had stuck around he would have done his usual thing, and considering how masterful those first 3 episodes are I think that version may have gone down as maybe in my top 5 anime of all time, but reality aint like that and the Armageddon we got is still solid as is. That said though Imagawa's approach to morality would have matched up with the manga perfectly.
Hmm, that makes a lot more sense compared to the what I thought was going to happen, I personally think that Gore and Burai becoming corrupted when Go didn’t was due to forcing Invader infection on uninflected cells while Go’s cells coming from a dead infected Michiru made him stable and thus immune to the invaders
with the getter 1 wreckage i figured it would tie somehow into ishikawa's themes of reoccurrence and invaders were the hyperevolved getter team from some kind of cyclical intergalactic war
My theory is that Go has invader cells but perfected. I mean invaders and humans are from the same organic matter but evolved differently. Go showed he could control invaders. Second, Coen and Stinger said they made a huge mistake when they touched Go. Gore and Brie was hit by devolution rays and became invader-esque monsters. Their evolution path is different than Go's(Hayato said Go has memory of loved ones). If you read Imagawa's Getter manga, Saotome wants to pollute Earth with Getter Rays to keep Michiru alive. I think the idea is similar to Alien and other horror movies from the 80s.

I hope you enjoyed Getter Arc's anime as much as many others did.
Ishikawa's legacy will never die
and neither will Nagai's whenever he leaves this world.
The anime's ending further enforces the cosmic horror aspect of the franchise, and I hope to see it continue be it via spin offs or alternate universes or even a sequel to Arc.

The fact you put this altogether with no bias for history or key information is one thing. The fact that the only "bias" you show here being love is what makes this video truly worthwhile. Getter Robo is my all-time favorite super robot series as well as the biggest inspiration for my indie comic, Primal Warrior Draco Azul. Seeing someone dedicate so much time and passion to such a complete, comprehensive, and in-depth retrospective was a joy to behold. I wasn't even aware of all the work Ken Ishikawa made in between his Getter installments and how much they influenced both the series and its later adaptations. Congrats good sir. You've not only done justice to Ishikawa and his creation, but have made a work of art that's sure to make more mecha fans believe in Getter for years to come!

Getter robo was my first introduction to the super robot genre and I'm very much happy that I share the same birthday as Ken.
I keep coming back to this video every so often as a memorial to the life and times of Ken Ishikawa. I look up to Ken Ishikawa (and subsequently Kentaro Miura) and most likely will for the rest of my life. His art boasts a reflective, and thematic stylings you just can't find in other media let alone manga (that I've experienced) I have a lot of respect for Ishikawa, his works, his life, etc. So it feels good to have such a comprehensive, passionate video to truly represent and tribute his life. Thank you for your passion drive and love for Ishikawa's works
Aside from being amazed by the manga itself, while reading it I was constantly thinking about ken and how much of a genius he must've been.
I always forget about Ishikawa and that's a shame. He lives in Go Nagi shadow, but out of all of their combined works I respect Getter Robo the most for just some of the reason outlined in this video, and that was mostly Ishikawa.

Getter Robo: Armageddon is my second favorite Mecha anime, verging on taking the top spot. Despite being super confused when I first watched it, it made me want to learn more about the franchise. i've been coming back to this video for about a month now, i think. i regularly have it in the background while drawing, as if the creative energy of ishikawa's work and all the getter entries is channeled through it through some sort of eldritch mech magic. just watching the absolutely amazing bits of animated panels alone is enough to absolutely make my day (gotta say i'm in fucking awe of your godlike dedication, holy shit, that must've been a LOT of work.) keep it up dude, there's not enough videos with that much soul in them on YT, imo.
Im doing a somewhat similar (but not nearly as lengthy) retrospective on Zone Of The Enders at the end of this year, and as for manga videos im in the process of working on one on Bastard!! currently.

Man this is freaking awesome! The amount of detail you put into this video is beyond phenomenal! As a recent GR fan, getting into it through the Shin OVA roughly in 2016 and just learning more and more about it and how influential it and Ishikawa-san are is fun, it's even inspired my writing alittle. I got into the Getter series last year and reading all the Getter manga he worked on was part of my journey. I loved pretty much all of it from the art, to the characters, and story. I so badly wish that he could have finished Getter Arc.

If other successful toy driven franchises like Transformers, Ninja Turtles, and the like are any indication, there's something specifically about it being toys that occasionally uncorks a creator's primal sense of imagination. I've once heard the process described as like, tapping directly into the part of the brain that once got so much joy from simply spinning yarn using whatever's in the toy box. Makes an isoteric sort of sense why such works stand the test of time, there often a very distinct difference in vibe between something made for a mere paycheck, verses something fueled by enthusiasm.
As an author I absolutely adore the way Ken Ishikawa writes his main characters.
Ryoma isn't a good person but he sure as shit is a hero.
I have an immense respect for Ken Ishikawa and his legacy.

I'm in awe. What an incredible and extensive look at one of many important Japanese mangaka who has gone unrecognized in the U.S.! I've been a longtime fan of Getter Robo, and it's fascinating to see how much depth the series has. There are so many profilic and important artists in the anime/manga industry whose contributions go unsung in most fandom circles, so it's great to see one of them being given due credit!
I'll flat out say Cheese. I don't USUALLY watch 2+ hour videos on a whim let alone re-watch them unless there's a distinct passion in what's being talked about and I have to say this is still so good. I still plan on reading Getter sometime this year or next I hope but Ishikawa's creativeness is just my taste in batshit looney tunes that I have to. So thank you for introducing me to this lunacy I hope to envelope myself into eventually.

I saw at least 10 chapters of High translated somewhere last year but I don't know where. As for SRW Cross Omega, you might call it lackluster but that game made the impossible possible. All the crossovers it got from all over the place were just so unexpected in all sorts of ways. Mega Man finally in some sort of SRW game, a Minky Momo crossover that actually points out how close Momo looks to Haman Khan, Obari appearing in the game as himself to give the Poputepipiku girls a mech of their own, Sakura Wars in a SRW game, other one off mechs from shows that don't even have anything to do with mechs being added into the game. It was at least amazing for what it managed to accomplish while it was active.

I've only watched Getter Robo Armageddon and New Getter Robo, of the two I heavily prefer armageddon in every way and didn't like Getter until I watched armageddon this might have to do with me not having seen any previous work of Getter Robo but having watched the video seeing that armageddon referenced and used stuff from previous entries makes me like it even more.
What I'm also just really happy with knowing is that the combining mech trope comes from Getter which is a trope I like very much and you definitely convinced me to dive deeper into the franchise.
I definitely felt your passion and love for Ken Ishikawa's works and Getter Robo.

Great video, i have a few versions of Getter robot, but I collect more Mazinger , Great Mazinger and mazinkaizer, by Go Nagai, Getter, Grandaizer, Gayking, Getter Dragon, Rydeen,are part of my collection, I love mechas, started watching Tetsuyen 28 in the early 70s and Mazinger z in 76.I'm 55 still a big fan, your not the only one to get emotional, I grew up with this , raised my 3 kids with it they are 35, 34, 24 years old now we share this with my grandson 7 yrs old today August 11th, thank you for a great video and history on Getter Robot.
Watching this video has really been an eye opener for me. I have admired Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa for a whlie now, but i never knew the true depths of his creation, his legacy and the power his name represents in the anime/manga culture and world.

I sat down and watched this whole video in one go. I've always seen clips of Getter Robo Armageddon and had always got me curious and last year I sat down and got through the manga. That was an experience, powered through the main manga in two days and then got through the OVAs. The editing and the passion you bring to this video is on point. Thanks for also diving into his other works for us to check out as welll as diving gently into themes that Ken Ishikawa were also interested in and explored in his works. I'm definitely interested in exploring his other works and how he narrates those storylines as well. Sadly I was very turned off by getter Robo Darkness after my first binge of the series which made me leave out on checking the other stories other artists have made but thanks for putting down a guideline for the others. Would love to see a review on Getter Robo Devolution. I haven't gotten around to that series yet but to hear your thoughts on it in greater detail would be amazing. Can't wait for the new series as well. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for this! I was born in '75 so my introduction to Getter Robo was Starvengers on Force Five. Star Dragon (Getter Dragon) will always be my favorite giant robot. I used to build all 3 ships with legos and then build my own versions of each. I rewatched Starvengers over and over. I still catch myself calling each of the main characters by their FF names. It wasn't until years later that I found out what Getter Robo G was and that it was actually part 2 of a larger series. I randomly found the ADV Getter Armageddon DVDs in Bestbuy years later and was just blown away. Since then, I've gone back and snagged any version of all of the anime series I could get my hands on and then upgraded them as they became available on Bluray. I've never been able to get ahold of any of the manga as I didn't know it really existed, but I plan to grab Devolution on your recommendation. I'd love to grab the older stuff as I could never really get into the original anime series very much. I'd love to see if I can get into the manga more. I'm so excited to see Arc. Getter Robo will always be my first Giant Robo love and your documentary made me smile and choke up over and over. I'm so glad to find someone out there that loves these characters even more than I ever did and recognizes that there really is something extra special about the series in every iteration. I hope Arc will be popular enough to get the older stuff re-released in the States. WELL DONE! Thank you!

I rmb playing the Getters in the few Super Robot Wars games that I've played and was infatuated everytime I get to use the Getter becuz of how op and how much of a banger the song played alongside the atks and always wondered about the many different variations of Getter there are and the story behind them. This video finally explains all my question and I can finally say I understand all the epic scenes of Getter Robo from all the AMVs whenever I listen to a Getter song.

Just wanna say I’m a longtime mecha fan who has been meaning to get into Getter Robo for a while now. But, as with many franchises, I wasn’t sure where to start considering how many main entries and spin-offs it has. This video is the best breakdown I have ever come across. Your passion and respect for the franchise is very clear and I truly appreciate the work you put into this.
Well... Getter Arc anime surprised me in more than one way... One the one hand, I couldn't expect such an ugly CGI in such a modern product... On the other hand, I was so freaking in love how the caracters' designs (except Hayato) were close to the manga and how they literally exported some manga scenes into the anime!
Plus the score was great! But none of those good sides won't be enough if not the script!
Damn, it's a freaking awesome job they've done there! They've basically managed to adapt not just the Arc manga but a huge story behind it without messing it up! I can forgive all the ugly visuals for that!!!
And Hayato... I guess it was clear from the final credits with the original manga panels that he's more than just a supporting character but a heart of the story (and the last episode and its credits are a valid proof of that statement!)
Even though I might not totally like Hayato's design for being somewhat unnecessary cheesy (hey, he used to look menacing even in the very first manga!) I totally loved his character development and that the authors decided to show his inner monologue and emotional struggle (which has always been there in the manga as well but hasn't been presented this directly)
And the ending... Isn't it awesome that they've managed to turn an unfinished story into a perfectly complete one without changing the manga's original cliffhanger?
Despite all its imperfections, Getter Arc anime has won a special place in my heart. It managed to reasonably slow down the original manga's unnecessary quick pace and filled the gaps in its story. Apart from that, it paid a tribute to the the whole Getter Saga and its characters, which is totally awesome!!!!

Fantastic video, I was lucky to get into Getter as young as I did and I felt incredible when I saw the trailer for Arc. Getter Robo is truly one of the most incredible series to ever exist, and your video does it justice.
I hope this video blows up, dude. I was lucky enough to have UA-cam recommend it, probably because I've been watching the Arc preview with the new version of Storm too much, lol. I love Getter and it doesn't get nearly enough love outside Japan.
