Nick, if you loved this movie, you'll surely love the criminally underrated *Arthur Christmas* as well. It would mean the world to me if you gave it a watch this holiday season! 🙏🏻
Fun fact: Sergio Pablos, the creator and director of the movie, was an old disney animator that work in a feel films like Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules. He was also the character animator of Tantor the elephant from Tarzan and Dr. Dopler from Treasure Planet (you can even recognize on Jesper's shock and scared faces that remind of Dr. Dopler)
I love how much Mogan’s (aka boat man) character is so much like Kuzco with the wit and mannerism and sometimes he even has Llama Kuzco’s facial expressions!
Huh. My mom and I watched "Klaus" this week and she was commenting on how the animation of Jesper's nose looked kind of like Dr. Delbert's nose, and I noticed that Mogens' design looked like Captain Longjohn Silver from "Treasure Planet." My opinion is that the Krum lady looks like Yzma, and the Ellingboe leader looks like the mayor from "Nightmare Before Christmas."
Fun fact, Klaus was actually nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2020, unfortunately it lost against Toy Story 4. It did won several Annies though, including Best Animated Feature.
I like to think, they had twelve years of Christmas with Klaus before he died, and that’s why we do the 12 days of Christmas now, to celebrate each year they had with him
Sometimes the ones that stick the most with you are the slow burn plotlines. Definitely love it when I go from despising to adoring a character because of the arc they go through. It speaks to the power of the story that you thought it was a touch underwhelming at first and then you got drawn in later on. Thanks for letting us track the progress of your impression of the film!
Yay! This was honestly one of the best Christmas and animated movies I've seen; a true modern classic and hidden gem. Thank you for reacting to this, Nick!
Oh man, I love Klaus! At first I thought it was another 3D animation, but I was so elated to discover that in was 2D animated, just with digital lighting and shading FX’s! I love this original concept of the legend of Santa Claus. The story is fresh, mostly unpredictable and it’s got a lot of heart and soul put into it. The characters are lot of fun (my favorites being Klaus and Margū) and the emotion of the film is beautiful, enough to get me in the feels. This film became one of my top favorite Christmas stories on day one and I still come back to it every Christmas season! Thanks SO much for covering this film, Nick!
While it's not the most accurate backstory of Santa Claus, I love this one to bits. As well as what the ending doesn't really fully explain. The name Santa Claus can roughly translate to "Saint Klaus". And in Catholicism, you don't earn the title of "Saint" until death. Which it implies is indeed what happened to Klaus at the end. But that also means that he got to reunite with his wife, seemingly became "immortal", and is still carrying out his good work to this day. 💖 Awesome.
Well I think we will never see a better "backstory" for Santa Claus. Being accurate is impossible with such an figure. Santa Claus as a figure unites many different elements of culture, myth and religion. For one in the modern american depiction is strong influence of coca cola marketing. Then Santa Claus himself is based on the european "Nikolaus" who originally comes around the 6th of december. The european Nikolaus of course himself is than a wild combination Saint Nicholas of Myra but at the same times shares elements and attributes of pagan deitys and myths. For example the norse god Odin as hooded wanderer that brings gift to Yule, the pagan festivity that was absorbed into Christmas.
I think it doesn't have to be an accurate depiction at all. It's still beautifully depicted, and sure Santa Claus has his origins. This is Klaus. An alternate story, inherently different. Absolutely gorgeous
This movie was really creatived on explaining where all the christmas traditions we know off come from (in this movie I mean) and a good reminder that christmas was something created waaaaay before Santa Claus
I love how, like you said, the atmosphere for how dreary and menacing the place is and all the people. Even Klaus! But then the color starts to come in and life steadily returns to the world. It's just beautiful ❤️ Also it's subtle, but if you've ever seen the claymation classic Santa Clause is Coming to Town, there are so many references to it. Like it's another Santa origin story but it's a silly upbeat magical take you would expect from a kid's movie. As told by the Postman as the narrator, so it feels like that one is what Jesper would tell people and this is the "what really happened" take on it 😂
I absolutely love the technical side of this animation as well! The studio's put out a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff on things like how the director went to visit the sami people and find a voice actress for Margu, or how the technical side of the animation was done (it's essentially 2D using 3D shading techniques that let it get away with this gorgeaous concept art level of detail) or various parts of the character design process. I really recommend checking them out.
Don’t you think Jesper looks a lot like Kuzco from the Emperor’s New Groove ? I think he does, especially with his sassy attitude and his arc about learning how not to be self centred and more respectful towards others. Even his friendship with Klaus got some Kuzco and Pacha vibes.
For me it’s Mogen (aka boat man whose job is the outgoing mail)- because he has the most wit and sarcasm, but as Llama Kuzco not Empire Kuzco. Especially since he has the same facial expressions and mannerisms! Example: when he’s drinking beer with his feet up when Jesper is wondering why no one has letters, and says “oh folks around here only have one thing to say with each other *sips* and they’re doing that just fine without mail” he has the same squinty smile as Llama Kuzco.
@@annafowdy I didn’t know the SNL bit or that MacDonald died :( RIP. I checked the frames side by side down to the animation and they had the same facial expressions and mannerisms. This movie hit me in so many ways. It's beautiful. I was surprised by the story, the characters, the humor, the emotion, the animation and I cry every time. It has become one of my favorite Christmas movies.
First time i saw this movie it was a few weeks after my grandfather died. He was also a builder. He made my brother snd i a go-cart when we were kids (well, he made us help) and he made lots of little wooden cars and tinker toys and stuff. This is something that I believe will become the kind of Christmas classic that we show our kids and then they show their kids someday. Something of interest regarding Margu - the filmmakers wanted to show the actual Saami people, so they actually found a Saami girl to voice the character and speak her lines in Saami.
The build up in this film is very well done really helps emphasise the changes that jasper and klaus help encourage and the difference from the depessing gray beginning to the bright colourful ending is wonderful

Since you did make a comment about how, "Since this was a Netflix Movie, I didn't expect the animation to rival Disney or Pixar," a few things should probably be mentioned: 1) When this was made, Netflix didn't have an animation department to their company. Any animated production was only made in partnership with Netflix (who tends to act as producers for projects half of the time) as Netflix would end up becoming a platform creators and companies could use to showcase their work (and this is still a thing even though Netflix is making its own animated works). This is the case for "Klaus" as SPA Studios (not Netflix) are the ones responsible for this movie. 2) SPA Studios is based in Madrid, Spain, and was founded by Sergio Pablos, a Spanish writer, director, producer, and animator (SPA itself stands for Sergio Pablos Animation). Sergio actually did work for Disney as he was an animator in films like Hunchback, Hercules, Tarzan, and was the character artist for Dr. Doppler in Treasure Planet. I cried so hard when I saw this movie. Never had a movie made me act like that in my entire life, never saw it in full again. It's those films you have to watch at least once to remember it for how beautiful it was.
In this movie, it seems that Christmas and the decorations with it have been a thing for a while before Santa and the legend Klaus and Jesper inspired. That's why they decorated that way: because Christmas was already a holiday before then. It was already a religious celebration and Jesper's plan to deliver one night a year on Christmas added Santa. Presents, in the movie, may have been a thing before Klaus anyway in reference to the gifts given by the three wise men/ the three kings on the night of the first Christmas. Idk I just really love this movie and have watched it every year since it came out. I've had alot of time to think about it.
I haven't watched it yet because I'm saving it for Christmas day but I already dropped a like. I KNOW I'm going to LOVE it. That is how much faith I have in Nick to bring genuine joy with a video. I can't wait to see this gem Christmas day! Sending you peace, love and season greetings ✌️💗🎊
i personally loved how disappointed you were at the beginning. i was here evil laughing because i knew the moment it got to Klaus you were gonna feel like a 5 year old again muahahah.
This is one of my favourite Christmas movies, ever. I didn't even watch it in December the first time; it was last year during a terrible time in my life (oh if only I knew what 2022 would bring to me...), and it became my emotional support. I'll be making some Christmas cookies next week to watch it with some cola de mono (a traditional drink we have over here). I love your honest reactions, and how much you appreciate every detail. I cried so much at the end and I'm sure I will cry again because of it very soon.
I've just started the video, but before it even kicks off, I am already so glad you're reacting to this, and this film is getting more attention. I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago, and absolutely fell in love with it, my favourite Christmas movie now.
Nick, I remember when I first suggested that you react to this film, and I'm so freaking ecstatic to see that you've finally seen it! This film is so underrated, and I want it to get more exposure. Thank you for watching Klaus.
Oh I love that you watched this movie! This has become one of my top favorite Christmas movies and I watch it every year, even if its not Christmas time! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! :D
What a nice surprise! I was like you when I first watched this movie, I wasn't so impressed at the beginning, but then it got better and better, and by the end, I loved it! I loved watching your shift in reaction from the start to the end, what fun! Thanks for reacting to this creative, heartwarming film. It's absolutely worth watching every Christmas season!
You have no idea how happy I am you're watching this my long distant boyfriend moved to my country in 2019 and our first Christmas we watched this together and now we watch I every Christmas eve !!!
This movie is special truly something... magical honestly. I am so happy you loved this in the end. Thank you again for all the wonderful content i absolutely love it and happy holidays everyones
i discovered this movie the Christmas it came out. i was drawn in at first by the animation style, and then BAM- right in the feels. It has replaced all other Christmas movies for me, its a beautiful origin story, that shows the ills of capitalism and consumerism, and brings Christmas back to a more humanistic, kind and community minded observance. It has really nice indigenous representation of the Sami people too, I cried a lot watching this the first time, and when i saw ur video come up in my feed i KNEW you would have a similar experience to me, went in blind, was interested then 100% sold:) Thanks again for sharing your reaction, i feel like I'm watching with a friend. Meri Kirihimete, e hoa! Arohanui from Aotearoa (Merry christmas and much love from New Zealand, friend)
This was amazing, one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time. Netflix just released a new Christmas movie whose songs are phenomenal, it’s called Scrooge a Christmas Caro l and it’s a musical! Do you think you could do a reaction to it? It doesn’t even have to be for Christmas!
I love this movie so much. Although the basic idea of plot isn't itself original, the movie adds so much personality and heart that it really makes itself stand out. It's so beautiful, i love this film so so so so much. top 10 christmas movie favorites for sure. Also, i'm so glad that you've been in a good movie these last few weeks!! Never be afraid to take some time for yourself, it's ight if the video schedule isn't perfect. Take care of yourself bro🫶🏼
for anyone wondering what margu is saying: Can I get a toy? Could I also get one, please? hello post man Can you speak with me now, then? I have waited for (so) long Are you going to help me? Finally! I don't think you understand me you are a dummy I would really like a toy I like her, she's kind I would like a sleigh, a biiig sleigh He's a little bit of a dummy, right? (Margu) - Mom, dad! He came, he came! (Father) - Oh, what a nice sleigh! (Mother): It's cold, you should put on your hat. And don't sleigh too fast This is how you sleigh It was he who helped me (Father) - We heard that you might need help (Mother) - Thank you! You made her so happy (Father) - On three! One, two, three! Oh gosh, it barely fits (something) he is a big man What is happening? Jesper! Don't go, Jesper! Jesper, (I don't understand) You know that I can't understand you yet, right? (Man) - Good! That was the last present... be careful, be careful! Take it very slowly (Woman) - Why are they here?
I heard this movie was like the top 10 movie and when I heard about it last year, I miss my chance to watching it. I have to wait another year finally this year. and it was worth it😁😁
Yay! 😃 I'm glad you were able to watch klaus, it's so beautiful and I love it. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to you Nick and everyone. 😃🎄 A True Act of Goodwill, Always Sparks Another. ~ Klaus
One of, if not, the best Christmas or Santa movie. I first saw it when it came out cause of my brother. I was reluctant. I laughed, I got annoyed, I cried, I LOVED it. Loved this reaction as well!! ❤️
This movie is a classic in the making. 20 years from now I will still be watching it. The kid playing with the frog scene reminded me so much of Rise of the Guardian scene where North is telling Jack how his center is wonder and bringing that wonder into the world. Oh fun fact the actress for Mrs. Krum is Debbie, Joan Cusack, from Addams Family Values! And this movie was the origin for Santa Claus/Saint Nick/North/Klaus not Christmas/Yuletide those two holidays have been around longer. Jesper even mentions Christmas time indicating Christmas was going to happen regardless of Klaus delivering gifts.
The person behind the heart and everything used to work for Disney And use this movie to go back to the old traditional style of Is how classical movies and everything was made
This actually hits home a bit. I'm not a mail deliverer, but a mail sorter in the Postcentre. It's hectic around Christmas. A lot of Christmas cards are being sent as well as packages, and of course letters for Santa in Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland. There goes letters from kids all over the world. We actually have a Christmas Village there. X3 It's nowadays the only time we are being asked to do overtime and earn a bit more money. The Finnish word for Christmas has nothing to do with religion really. We call it Joulu (Yolooh), kinda like the word Yule, which is an old Germanic celebration, before the religion took over. Yule was and stll is, a celebration of midwinter for wiccas and heathen people. X3
This film is incredible. I love that for the first half of the movie you can't figure out what's going on. That's quite an accomplishment when so many stories are so predictable these days. The twist that keeps going throughout the film is that there is no magic and no Santa. It's the beginning of the legend and it's brilliant.
the start of this movie is okay, but once we get to Klaus it becomes amazing, such a beautiful story, a beautiful movie, didnt expect it to be so great honestly when I first went into it :)
My favourite part of the movie is that they included Sami people (my people). Before recent years, being Sami was seen as shameful in Norway because of how the Norwegian government treated us. They basically tried to get rid of both the language and culture. Because of this we almost lost our Sami identity, only about 25 000 people speak the language today, but thankfully it’s gotten better and better in recent years. That’s exactly why this movie is so important Also, she’s colourful because she’s wearing our traditional clothing called “gákti”, it comes in different colours and styles depending on where you/your family are from!
And why does the letter get blown to him some people say the wind that he blows it to him is actually his dead wife and that that the reason why the wind wants him to help the postman is his wife trying to help him move on from her death that's why in this movie Santa Claus become Santa Claus it's like some weird destiny thing and it smells likely he became an outcast in the society cuz he was different than everyone else since marriage also it's interesting in real life he was a Christian pope of Turkey
This one was an instant standard for me. It’s outstanding. The only problem I have with it is that Jesper and his dad pronounce his name differently. Pretty sure his dad is the only one who says it right, honestly.
Hey everyone hope you enjoyed the reaction!! Also a special Happy Birthday once again to Ashley!! See you tomorrow for another surprise movie!!

When they take the time to make a damn good 2D animated movie that *complements* a damn good story: ❤️❤️❤️
They INVENTED A WHOLE NEW ANIMATION TRICK for this movie that allows hand-drawn 2D to have LIGHTING LIKE CG.
They weren’t trying to make Klaus seem mean, that was Jesper’s perception of him

His dad's not being harsh. Gently stern. Hell, he didn't even get a brick to the head.
After watched this movie when it came out. It became my favourite Christmas movie
YESSS!!! Such a beautiful movie im so glad you watched it! Hopefully more people do, everyone needs to see it
I haven't watched it yet because I'm saving it for Christmas day but I already dropped a like.
The families feuding in this movie are based off two real life families, the Hatfields and the McCoys.
FINALLY! I've been waiting for you to react to this movie for a long time. Is one of my favorites
Recently I’ve made it a point to watch this and Arthur Christmas every year. Both are absolutely fantastic and instant classics in my opinion
Next to Krampus, this is one of Christmas movies I very much enjoy. It's a much more different take on the Santa lore, but very well done.
Finally! I knew you'd react to this movie eventually! I'm so excited to see your reaction to this movie! :D
Klaus quickly became my favourite animated christmas film. The unique and amazing animation style, the characters, the writing, it's all so good.
Fun fact, Jesper is voiced by Jason Schwartzman AKA Gideon from Scott Pilgrim VS the World.
This is one of my favorite Christmas movies, the animation is beautiful and the story is top-notch!
I love the animation in this movie, it's funny, and when me and my family and I first watched it I think I nearly cried. It's so good
This movie is special truly something... magical honestly. I am so happy you loved this in the end. Thank you again for all the wonderful content i absolutely love it and happy holidays everyones
Yes!! Been waiting all year in hopes to see your react to this! Keep up the amazing work
i discovered this movie the Christmas it came out. i was drawn in at first by the animation style, and then BAM- right in the feels.
My absolute favorite Christmas movie 😭💞 so excited! Happy holidays!
This is one of the most visually impressive movies I've ever watched! Glad you get to check it out!
I love Christmas as well man, especially since where I am it snows. It's like enchanting in a way.
for anyone wondering what margu is saying:
Can I get a toy?
Could I also get one, please?
hello post man
Can you speak with me now, then?
I have waited for (so) long
Are you going to help me? Finally!
I don't think you understand me
you are a dummy
I would really like a toy
I like her, she's kind
I would like a sleigh, a biiig sleigh
He's a little bit of a dummy, right?
(Margu) - Mom, dad! He came, he came! (Father) - Oh, what a nice sleigh!
(Mother): It's cold, you should put on your hat. And don't sleigh too fast
This is how you sleigh
It was he who helped me
(Father) - We heard that you might need help
(Mother) - Thank you! You made her so happy
(Father) - On three! One, two, three!
Oh gosh, it barely fits (something) he is a big man
What is happening?
Jesper! Don't go, Jesper! Jesper, (I don't understand)
You know that I can't understand you yet, right?
(Man) - Good! That was the last present... be careful, be careful! Take it very slowly
(Woman) - Why are they here?
I heard this movie was like the top 10 movie and when I heard about it last year, I miss my chance to watching it. I have to wait another year finally this year. and it was worth it😁😁
Yay! 😃 I'm glad you were able to watch klaus, it's so beautiful and I love it. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to you Nick and everyone. 😃🎄
A True Act of Goodwill, Always Sparks Another.
This movie is, without any doubt or exaggeration, my favorite Christmas movie- I’m so excited that you watched it
I remember seeing a very rough pencil test advertising this project back in like 2011. So proud of Sergio and his team!!! 🎉💖
I watched this movie 2 weeks ago for the first time and it got to me too. This is a really good movie showing the spirit of Christmas.
The person behind the heart and everything used to work for Disney And use this movie to go back to the old traditional style of Is how classical movies and everything was made
Loved to see the transformation of your reaction throughout the film. Great movie
Also such beautiful animation, i really miss 2D animations.
They did a fantastic job!
Yes! I was waiting for this! Happy to see you react to this
I love this movie so, so much! If I ever get Netflix it will be because I can't live without this movie! 😄❤️ Merry Christmas!
This film is incredible. I love that for the first half of the movie you can't figure out what's going on. That's quite an accomplishment when so many stories are so predictable these days. The twist that keeps going throughout the film is that there is no magic and no Santa. It's the beginning of the legend and it's brilliant.
Masterpiece movie and perfect to watch on New year or Cristmass day.
Klaus is a great Christmas movie, and awesome reaction Nick.
The end of this movie made me cry so much!! TTuTT
Merry Christmas Nick so happy you found this movie its a great Netflix original a boy called Christmas is one you would love
Please react to Love Actually! It’s a Christmas film and it’s honestly the biggest cast and biggest Christmas film ever in my opinion. So well made!
the start of this movie is okay, but once we get to Klaus it becomes amazing, such a beautiful story, a beautiful movie, didnt expect it to be so great honestly when I first went into it :)
That’s exactly why this movie is so important
Also, she’s colourful because she’s wearing our traditional clothing called “gákti”, it comes in different colours and styles depending on where you/your family are from!
Klaus is such a good movie I'm glad you watched it ❤️
Eeeek! You did another movie from my list!
I love the animation style. Sometimes you cant tell its 2d. I also like the Saami representation.
This one was an instant standard for me. It’s outstanding. The only problem I have with it is that Jesper and his dad pronounce his name differently. Pretty sure his dad is the only one who says it right, honestly.
One of my favorite Christmas movies.
That's crazy, I was just thinking how it'd be great for you to see this movie.
I always like to think the older ladies with the body bags are just the town morticians
I love this movie when, I was 22 years old.
You should totally check out Jingle All The Way.
Yessssss. Please, Nick. Please.
Oh my god this movie is so amazing it is straight 10 out of 10 the next movie you should probably do is Arthur Christmas
