One small detail that I still like is that, when Jesper's father comes to retrieve him, he notices that his son is looking sad, he sits down in front of him before leaving and inquires what the situation is. His father genuinely cares and is attentive and I like that.
Yeah!! It’s really nice to have confirmation that his dad’s only true concern wasn’t to punish Jesper or get him out of the way, but to push him toward finally achieving some sort of self-actualization (he probably didn’t expect his tactic to be as successful as it ended up being though lol)
@@juliebogen1797 You could say it was a bit of a punishment to go to Smeerensberg, but yeah, he probably expected it to be a humbling defeat. Instead it was a victory and growing experience for Jesper, which is also good. He just didn't expect the way Jesper would develop and how could he, but he didn't seem like he was against it either.
Honestly, I think they missed an opportunity there to have a good reconciliation between the father and the son and to kind of close the emotional arc that was established in the beginning of the movie for Jesper. It was something that they sacrificed in order to have the fake departure followed by the reveal that he stayed behind, but I can't shake the feeling that they could have figured out a way to work that in instead of just having him talk about it after the fact. You lose that emotional anchor.
My favorite part about this movie is how each detail of todays Christmas is slowly revealed. The wagon is pulled by a horse until they need something stronger and we get reindeer, the wagon breaks and we get the sleigh, a child sees them making a huge jump and suddenly the reindeer can fly, it’s just such a great explanation for everything.
And overall, i love that theres this relationship between the post and santa. Like a human element, the way parents and older family give kids gifts, and play santa, that even national post offices do this magical thing to maintain this beautiful white lie for children and foster belief. (Where the rising ape meets the falling angel). That theres a necessity for not just children to believe, but the everyday adult. We say the words and step into them. It really feels like a spiritual extension/precursor of the hogfather (then a ball of gas would take the place of the sun, we need to believe the little lies, to believe the big ones- justice, hope, etc). The postman is this go between of the mystical and those who believe, they lend weight to the lie, and in doing so, make it true. Especially in this day and age, they really are the people who deliver the gifts, and its Klaus who gets the credit. Its not a selfless act on their part. They are just trying to do their job. But they deserve proper appreciation, wages, breaks, treatment, all of it, even admidst the christmas season.
Hello! Just a little technical clarification. I am the person who supervised the lighting in Klaus and we never used machine learning to do it, it is actually a team of 30 artists who made it by hand with the help of a tracking system from an in-house software. If you are curious to see how it is actually made go check the youtube channel of The SPA Studios, we released bunch of timelapse videos with me voicing over them to explain the process. Thank you and glad lots of you love Klaus ! Merry Christmas !
What I also love about the montage is that the parents start to do nice things because of the kids. The kids don't see the difference between the two groups and don't understand why they hate each other. And by doing good deeds they show the adults that their near sighted few may be not the right way to live life. We can all learn something from a kids view on this world. Differences may be smaller/less important than we may first seem to think :)
Yeah, like when the kids gathered their neighbor's berries for her, so the neighbor gave their mom some berry jam, and then their mom gave her a berry pie. That's one of my favorite parts.
I love this movie so much!! My favorite scene is when the kids go to school for the first time and Alva thinks that if she just teaches them one thing they’ll leave her alone, but then they actually get really excited and inspired at the idea of learning more. Modern schooling has turned education into grueling competitive labor, but deep down human beings really are curious creatures with the desire to always want to know more. And that scene is a reminder that learning can be a joyous activity.
I love how fondly Klaus looks at the little boy playing with his toy pullstring frog, going so far as to drop his hood to see it better. It's basically his way of getting to experience sharing his toys with the children he never got to have.
Alva had initially been planning to leave the town for years, and was generally apathetic about her job, only to change her tune when the illiterate children ask her to help them to write their names. The children go from attending school just to write Klaus for a toy, to attending because they genuinely want to learn.
Honestly, her arc kinda gets me. Here's someone who tried to do the same thing as Jesper, except she came in with genuinely good intentions and it all got beaten out of her by the nature of the island. Then this whiny, stuck-up prick shows up and stumbles his way into success. Except, it's not just success for him. He drives the kids her way, too. It takes a minute, but the kids start to learn. They whet their appetites for knowledge and become driven to seek out more. Jesper's accidental good deed changed her life, so, in return, she shows him the purpose and neighborly love he inspired throughout the whole community, eventually changing his for the better.
@@unknown_limes and i love how it aligns to the theme of a good deed sparking another. Sure, Jesper did it to get more letters, but he caused a chain reaction of good will that brightened the hearts of almost every person in town.
i’m so glad klaus is getting more recognition. despite its oscar nomination it flew unnoticed for a lot of people. it’s my all time favorite christmas movie and even though it’s only been out a couple of years it has a nostalgia and charm to it that not many movies have anymore.
Yea my gotos since its release are Klaus, Krampus, and The Hogfather. Sometimes Its a Wonderful Life but honestly thats never specific to christmas for me. (And when i was younger got played all year round all the time for me). These three are all new to me and i enjoy both the familiarity of it, and being able to let the details unfold in ways some of my older christmas gotos cant anymore. Its a delight to have that fresh perspective and animation directed at a holiday i have had 33 years of experience with, and only have a nephew to look at it like that.
I'm really glad the CT team did an episode on this movie! I had never heard of it before this episode was released, but I just finished watching it a little bit ago, and it is so good! It has such a timeless message in it that more people in the world need to hear and experience!
One of my favorite moments is when the little girl writes her name for the first time and just looks at it and says “sooo.. that’s my name???” She’s around my child’s age and just imagining them being in that sort of environment. It just guts me. Instant tears.
I used to be a teacher and believe me, seeing the joy on kids' faces when they can show off the new things they've learned is the best. That little moment that Alva had there, I had it many times. :)
I have holiday related trauma and I was honestly super frustrated that my in laws wanted to watch a "Christmas movie". But this movie legitimately healed something in me
I'm glad that watching this movie helped you. It has a very sweet and heart-warming story. I love that by watching Klaus heal from the grief of losing his wife and having never been able to have children, something in us heals and helps us have hope.
I love how the interactions between Klaus and Jesper totally feel like a Pacha and Kuzco interaction-especially when they’re laughing together in the sleigh
I am not a Christmas-y person in general (raised Muslim) but this movie had me sobbing and actually felt like it gave me a reason to believe in the holiday. Also, as a teacher who is currently going through the same struggles of identity and purpose as Alva did, I can't help but get super emotional while watching Klaus.
honestly, I think that's what so great about this movie. I was raised Christian but have since left the church, and Christmastime often leaves me sad as a result. But this movie, in exploring the universal human virtues we can celebrate even outside of the structure of a religious holiday, feels unifying somehow. (FWIW, I am also a teacher.)
This is a genuine question. Why don’t Muslims celebrate Christmas? Jesus is a major figure in Islam to the degree that he’s called the Messiah and is said to be coming back on judgment day much like in Christianity. Even if Muslims don’t believe that he is God incarnate wouldn’t it still make sense to celebrate his birth? Again I’m not trying to start an argument I’m just genuinely curious.
Same, watched it with my Muslim family and we all cried. I guess it’s because the values of this movie can be appreciated by everyone, regardless of religion or culture. It’s things like that that can bring all of us together and it’s honestly beautiful.
@@thedukeofchutney468 Islam doesn't recognize Jesus as the son of God, because in its view God cannot even have children in the first place, metaphysical or otherwise. Instead, Jesus is recognized and highly respected as a prophet of God who did hugely profound and important things in his life, but that's pretty much it, more or less. Islam also forbids idolatry, so a Muslim celebrating the birth of a man who is supposed to represent The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost (and has been visually depicted with varying degrees of accuracy more times than most people) would probably be looked down upon, to say the least lol.
Well, sort of. There *is* that swirly wind effect, that we're strongly encouraged to think is a hint being given by Klaus's wife's spirit. And then there's the little bit at the ending -- both when it's made clear that Klaus just disapppears, and when Jesper says that once a year, on Christmas, he gets to see his friend. But it's very subtly done, and doesn't overshadow the rest of the film at all, which is nice.
"Doing good for selfish motives is still doing good." SO important to remember this. I see so many people hating on any videotaped act of kindness, "It doesn't count if you filmed it" mentality. Like... why not? Why doesn't it count?
YES. People like to talk about "virtue signaling," but so often its just an excuse to ignore whatever genuine issue is being addressed. I always say, "the fact that some people do the right thing for the wrong reason isn't an excuse to not do the right thing at all."
The SHEER ammount of tears i shed when Jesper said '' i get to see my friend'' at the end of the movie cannot be understated. Best christmas movie i have ever seen.
This bit of scene made me cry the most UGLY tears cause it's just a beautiful end to a story but a wonderful beginning to a well known holiday spirit😭😭
Klaus is definitely one of the best christmas movies, and it is an interesting take on the origins of Santa Claus. Great psychological study of the characters of Klaus.
@@ProjectKhopesh Yesss. I used to rewatch it on repeated when we had Netflix. Heck I'd consider buying multiple languages if they weren't region locked.
Another thing I really loved about this movie is the little Sámi-girl ❤ She's just adorable and it makes me so happy that they're showing Sámi culture in an animated film.
I love her too ❤ I can't help to sob any time she calls for Jasper when it seems that he's going away from all of them. She's not even real but touches my heart. And when they deliver her present? Ugh, I ugly cry every time I watch that scene
I literally thought to myself today, "I wish Cinema Therapy would do a video on Klaus for the holidays". As a teacher, the part of the film that always gets me is when Alva's eyes soften when she meets kids who have a genuine desire to learn.
I'm always sobbing at the scene where they give the toy (sled) to the little Saami girl. The music swells and you can see Jesper start to see making others feel good also makes him feel good. I watch this at least 2 times during the Christmas season each year. It immediately jumped to my favorite Christmas movie when i first watched it. I'm glad you guys are finally reacting to it. ❤
The music in the frog scene always gets me within seconds and I think that's mostly due to its timing: it doesn't properly start when the toy is revealed, because it's not about the toy. Like the boy it's hesitant at first, then it's filled with surprise and amusement and only when the boy actually gives in to the joy of the moment, the music goes big while the camera takes us from the kid to Klaus. The music is not about what a great present the frog is but about how great the kid's joy is and how THAT is the gift that Klaus needed.
Klaus is not just the best Christmas movie its one of the best movies I've ever seen. I watch it multiple times throughout the year whenever I am feeling down or lonely. It always lifts my spirits and reminds me of the good that's hidden even in the darkest of places.
I do when Jesper comes up with the Naughty List in order to scare the bully kid and the rap starts playing as he walks away xD "That's what you get when you mess with the postman".
@@M_JackOfAllTrades I'll be honest, that pulls me out(though Jesper coming up with the story and all is a great scene; just the music choice feels a little gimmicky is all).
Klaus has been a yearly watch for me ever since its release. My favorite scene is when Jesper and Klaus travel far to give Margu her sled, one of the many scenes in the movie that makes me teary eyed.
Oh I know. I love that bit where Jesper wakes up to find Klaus helping him. And when Jesper tries to talk, Klaus is just like "AH" *Points to the work to be done*, and Jesper does so. THAT'S THE GOOD STUFF.
I love Klaus ever since the year it came out. I always like to tie it with the idea of how the guardians of Rise of the Guardians, have their own lives and their own stories of how they came to be. It just makes me shed tears on how beautiful this movie is, and I will continue to watch for years to come ❤️
I've not seen this movie yet but as an artist, this movie is visually beautiful. Like, the HUGENESS of Klaus's character design next to weasly Jesper, the textures of the colouring, the shape design, the LIGHTING!
Me and my girlfriend watched Klaus for the first time this year. It is certainly going to be in my yearly Christmas Playlist. How this didn't win any awards is beyond me
@@michaelcollins4534 I think the same. It should have won. The Annies are given by the international animated film association. I didn’t know either. I just looked it up XD. I just new it got awards so I looked it up
I agree and love how well they executed this vision perfectly. Sadly the movie wish doesn’t match in quality compared to this movie. Wish also wanted to execute the story book visual style but it doesn’t look polished enough to be a timeless movie
My animation thesis advisor actually worked with Klaus’s director, Sergio Pablos, during their time at Disney, and he introduced me to this film way back around 2016-2017 when all that was out was a concept trailer. At the time, it was mindblowing to me that 2D animation could finally achieve this stage of polish, and I knew that a full film of this would be the start of something amazing. I’m so happy to see that it’s become a holiday must-watch for so many people ❤
I remember the concept trailer as well! It feels strange to have watched the first steps of what would later become a highly renowned film. Like being one of the first to see a lightsaber before the creation of Star Wars. I had my eye on the project because Pablos was the animator for Treasure Planet's Dr. Doppler, another film I revere. His character animation style is very recognizable in Jesper.
Literally watching this just after doing a program to give gifts at an senior center, it’s so nice to see the smiling faces of those people because most of them don’t have families or people to visit them. One wing of the center was full of veterans, most didn’t have family to be around, one of the men sang for us after we finished giving gifts in that wing. It’s such a wonderful thing to see.
What I like with the montage of all the people being more kind to each other, all the people being kind are shown in sunlight, while those who still have prejudice are in the shadows
My cousin suffers from depression and today was a bad day for him so I told him that he is valid, he doesn't deserve all the bad things that have happened to him and they aren't his fault, and that his feelings have and always will be valid. He appreciated the reminder. I was so filled with emotion when I told him that that my eyes watered because of how deeply I feel that for him and myself.
There is a line that hit me very hard in this movie, when the kids tell the teacher "could you teach us more?" I am a science teacher, during my first job I tried to tell how interesting science could be to 6th grade students, so I told them cool facts about sponge bob or finding nemo, even capitan america and how some seeds can be frozen and then come again to life, one boy looked at me and said "wow teacher, could you teach us more?" and I thought "well, this is my life purpose". When I heard that like in Klaus I almost cried, to be able to put that spark in someone else, gives you a feeling of fullfilment I wish everyone could feel. Such a beautiful movie indeed.
Klaus is such a beautiful movie. I believe one of the lead animators was an ex-Disney animator. You guys might hear Kuzco, but I see Dr. Doppler SO much in Jaspers movements. Also spotted baby Tarzan in the little Sami girl Margu
And what I love about the montage of the children doing good things to get toys, I realized that it's so bright, happy, and colorful, and in the beginning its all dark, gray, and dead bodies which shows how much everyone is starting to change.
A few days ago my sibling asked me "Have you watched Klaus this year?". They know I rewatch it every year and were wondering if I checked it off my list in 2023. So it's really great that you guys did a video on it. Gotta rewatch it today! 🌲
Love this movie so much! Also, to comment on Alan's watermelon flavored popcorn- my culture celebrates the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. We stay up late eating nuts, pomegranates and watermelon while reading poetry. That way we keep the bad spirits away. The watermelon is supposed to remind us that warmer days are coming. So by our holiday, you are perfectly celebrating the season by eating watermelon flavored popcorn lol. Happy Shab eh Yalda!
I'm a teacher and this movie speaks a lot to me for Alva's part, the changing of the town and Alva finding her love of teaching again brings happy tears to my eyes EVERY TIME. I showed this movie to my students, family, anyone with kids, I love it SO MUCH. It's on my Christmas movie list every year!
Klaus is personally my favorite Christmas Movie, and might also be the only Christmas Movie I like. I love the story, of how someone so selfish can bring so much joy, and eventually even enjoy spreading it. How kindness spreads just like hate, and how sometimes all you need is to be kind to make the world a better place. The animation as well is just, top notch. I genuinely didn't know this was 2D until a year or so ago, the shading & lighting is immaculate. And most of all, I appreciate how grounded it feels. It has its moments of magical whimsy, but they're subtle, and could be easily seen as interpretations. The building of the myth, how this wonderful man probably became a Saint, Saint Klaus if you will. The Sami people and their colorful clothes being the origins of his iconic red suit. There's so much I love about this movie, I watch it every Christmas.
I always cry in Jaspers moment. When He gives his first gift. The music, the animation, the light, just everything is perfect. I feel the Joy an I LOVE it.
i watched this when it first came out just because of the fun art style and now it's a must watch every year, it's so beautiful and wholesome and makes me sob every time
11:02 maybe its because a giant man in the middle of the woods on an unknown island just tied something that looks like a noose and handed it to him right after spiting a small log with his hands
@@CinemaTherapyShowHey, have you thought of doing tv shows? Because Prime Video has a series called The Legend of Vox Machina. While it can be a raunchy comedy, it has deep messages about revenge and finding one’s strength.
Just was told my favourite aunt died of cancer at the age of 63… Funeral will be right in the middle of the holidays… … This helped a bit… Not much, but a bit… Knowing this channel exists, makes life a little bit more bearable. Alan, John, thank you both… 🥲
My condolences, holidays after just losing a loved one are rough. I lost my grandma 3 days before Christmas & went to her funeral 2 days after; there's a hole in your heart that lingers despite active attempts to fill it. Only comfort I can offer is with time (& sharing memories with those who knew the person) the ache becomes easier to bear.
I'm sorry to hear that 😔 She must've been really something if she was your favorite. Glad you found this channel, though; these two knuckleheads are a huge help, and a great source of relief. Jonathan also has a second channel, Mended Light - it's more blatantly therapeutic, but still has a lot of great humor, and goes over TONS of content (including grief and losing people you love). Either way, I hope you take care of yourself, remember all that you can about your aunt, and try to spread what love you can this holiday season. All the best to you and yours!
"Doing good for selfish reasons is still doing good." Reminds me of a story I once heard. A rich man comes to a Rabbi and says "I would like to make ahuge donation for the orphanage you're taking care of." "That's wonderful!" said the Rabbi "Meet me tomorrow at the same time and we'll discuss the details!" The next day the rich man comes to him upset and says "I changed my mind. I realized I wanted to make the donation not because I care about the kids, but because I wanted to make myself feel better." And the Rabbi asks him "Do you really think the children will care why you made the donation? Regardless of your feelings, you will still make their lives better!"
I never really understood people having a certain movie they watch every year for xmas. But Klaus has become this for me. It really speaks to me and is not so in your face xmas while still having all of the xmas meaning behind it. Absolutely love it!
Klaus is definitely one of those movies that helps my "holiday blues" along with stuff like The Hogfather and Tokyo Godfathers. Thank you for talking about it and also making me realize it wasn't CGI 😅
Tokyo Godfathers is my favorite holiday movie (though Klaus might be in competition for that title)! I hope it eventually gets covered in Cinema Therapy. Maybe not this year, but next.
@@Dokataa Yeah I'm pretty positive most of the year, but previous bad experiences from winter makes me feel drained even now. Luckily I've got friends to support me, and media that reminds me of what makes me happy the rest of the year
The key to the conveying feelings of a character is not through their mouth, but their eyes. Those subtle shifts in them and the face without speech can make such an impact on the audience. Jesper when he is watching Margu on her boat/sled. He doesn't say anything, he just smiles and his eyes widen and light up, and you can see in that moment he realizes what Klaus saw when he gave the little boy his toy frog. The joy it brought is what mattered, not getting rid of things collecting dust on a shelf. Yes, an underrated gem.
There was no “machine learning” or “feeding it through the computer to render the lighting.” They DID invent a new system to help them add all the shadows and highlights, yes, but all of that was tweaked by artists frame by frame, shot by shot.
I saw the art style and was immediately drawn in. But it was the scene where he first arrives in the town that had me sold. There was the creepy little kids staring at him while stabbing a snowman with carrots and I was like, "oh yeah, I'm gonna like this movie."
This movie became an instant tradition to watch every Winter. The animation is absolutely stunning and the story is so heartwarming. I'm so glad that you finally made an episode on this beautiful, underrated film. ❤️
Klaus is quite possibly my favorite Christmas movie of all time. My brother and I watch it together every single Christmas, and we cry our eyes out at the ending each time. It's such a beautiful, all around heartwarming movie that just feels so... sincere in the way it delivers its message.
I love the teamwork in this movie. Not just Klaus & Jesper, but everyone. The kids working together to be good and stay off the naughty list, Jesper & Alva working together to help Margu write her letter. It’s a lovely reminder that you don’t have to do everything alone. Another great movie on teamwork is Boyz in the Wood (AKA Get Duked!). You’ll be happy to know it’s a comedy, so you won’t have to be hydrated enough to cry. 😂
Hey, I'm the guy who wrote the software used for lighting the characters and I can assure you it doesn't use any machine learning of any sorts. A lot of artists worked on lighting the shots, it would be good not to disrespect their work thanks!
I cannot believe I missed this upload! Klaus is not just one of my all time favorite Christmas movies, it's one of my favorites films of all time, period! It's perhaps the first film I watched as an adult, that genuinely made me feel like a kid again! The song that plays when Margu gets her toy "Invisible", makes me cry every single time ❤ And as an amateur animator, this movie continues to BLOW my mind away! I've always had a huge soft spot for 2D, and it's been heartbreaking to see companies like Disney and Dreamworks completely drop the medium over the past 10+ years.. Klaus and the people at SPA Studios _revolutionized_ 2D animation for the first time in a decade! I'm genuinely upset that this movie didn't get more recognition, and that the studio hasn't produced a hand-drawn animation since. Though their current project "Ember", which was cancelled by Netflix, was gonna be similar in style to "Klaus" 🤞
I absolutely adore this movie, it's one of my favorites. The change in the people of Smeerensberg brought on by the children doing good deeds never fails to put a smile on my face.
I love Klaus! I remember when I was still a student, my animation professor was so excited for this movie that he always kept the class updated and showed trailers and stuff. And this movie was indeed incredible 🤩 The animation is so gorgeous and the story warms my heart ❤️ This is a Christmas movie I'll put on a loudspeaker for people to start watching every year for the holidays cause it deserves the love! 😊
I'm so so glad you guys got around to this movie in a video!! As an aspiring animator and just as a human being, from the moment I first watched this movie it became so special to me and sincerely changed the holidays for me. I guess I was in that "christmas makes me miserable because of xyz" category and it made me so happy to see you guys point out Jesper's perspective changing everything. Lots of love and happy holidays! ❤💚❤💚
The do-gooding montage in this awesome film is one of the best montages EVER! And within that, the little sequence of the two neighbors swapping berry-based gifts SO SPITEFULLY is hilarious!!! How do you show someone do something nice out of spite?!? 😂😂😂
One of my favorite things this movie shows is that prejudice is often rooted in misinformation and heritage, and it takes the youngest generation to often revert from those ways and make a change
Arthur Christmas would be a great follow-up to this next year! Along with Klaus, one of the funniest and loveliest Christmas movies I see now every year.
You guys always make me cry. You just seem so sincere and like the nicest men. I really admire how you show feelings. It’s still something I don’t see often in my country. I miss my dad so much when I watch you guys. He died this year. And you guys turn me into a soft puddle of goo
I love the scene where the wind and snow spiral around Jesper because it depicts that Klaus's wife is still with him and she's telling him not to give up on making toys
I can’t afford therapy, but watching these programs helps me to heal and grow in so many ways. I thank the two of you for helping me to examine my life and my issues. I have resolved many past pains from your wisdom.
I LOVE this movie, I've watched it every Christmas since it came out and I don't cry any less! It's so special to me. Even just the MUSIC in this film is fantastic. I am a little devastated that you didn't react to them giving the toy to the Sami girl! That was such a pivotal moment for Klaus' character, but nevertheless I'm just excited you watched this!
We discovered this movie last Christmas season and it quickly became a favorite of ours. Glad you two loved it. Its warming, beautiful, and just a great way to think of the Christmas/Santa spirit. Had no idea it was all hand drawn.
Since you guys asked for more hidden gems, I'd like to recommed The Sea Beast. It's an animated movie that seems to be a project of love and I really loved the nuances of the story.
LMAO! It's been a few years since I've seen this movie, but I'm crying just watching this vid, which is saying something for me! I've been having a really hard, stressful time lately, even woke up sick this morning because of it, and I really needed this ray of joy, kindness, and hope that things CAN get better! Thanks so much! What a wonderful movie! I might need to watch it again!
i watched this movie twice and am moved by the message of doing good to make others happy which can make a chain reaction for others to do good. This is truly a Christmas movie that I will watch with my future kids.
Literally just watched this movie (for my annual watch, not the first time) last night, so i love that this dropped today And yes! This movie is basically Kuzco and Pacha as Jesper and Klaus. It's almost like they dropped those characters into this setting and made a movie about it
I once heard kindness is something that has to grow but anyone can do it. This whole movie just felt like a Christmas miracle reminding me of that everytime I watch it with my family. It has been a long time since my family and I loved a holiday movie this much! Over dramatic I know but it's true. Thanks for looking it over you guys are AWESOME! Could you guys do Blue Eye Samurai? it is a mini series that just came out on Netflix (8 forty minute episodes) and while it certainly isn't a feel-good show, it covers topics like revenge, betrayal, and isolation really well. It is also beautifully animated. Also thanks for covering Klaus, it is my favorite Christmas movie.
As an adult i havent really seen many films that can still give me the Christmas feeling and in recent years this is one of the few. Really glad you guys are doing this

also the whale skeleton being a stand-in for the christmas tree

This is exactly why I had bad grades in high school especially. I loved learning but I hated the homework and projects and presentations and tests.
I love this comment
I love how fondly Klaus looks at the little boy playing with his toy pullstring frog, going so far as to drop his hood to see it better. It's basically his way of getting to experience sharing his toys with the children he never got to have.
@@The-Mask021 WRONG VIDEO MY GUY
@@The-Mask021I’m sorry I haven’t watched the full video but so this seems funnily random to me 😂😂
AND THEN Jesper does the same thing with his hood when they deliver the sled to Margu!
@@KevinSanchez-wq6isI reread that comment multiple times, finally figured out what it’s saying. Yeah, it’s very random
@@The-Mask021you ok?
Klaus is such a triumph for animation, especially for advocating the nearly lost magic of 2D.
One of my favorite moments is when the little girl writes her name for the first time and just looks at it and says “sooo.. that’s my name???”
She’s around my child’s age and just imagining them being in that sort of environment. It just guts me. Instant tears.
I used to be a teacher and believe me, seeing the joy on kids' faces when they can show off the new things they've learned is the best. That little moment that Alva had there, I had it many times. :)
Margu is my favorite character 😊
All of the kids then going "I want to learn how to write my name" is just, so amazing. I love this movie.
Followed by "teach me more!", and how *that* changes Alva. Just a lot of great little moments.
SO damn beautiful 😭😭❤
I have holiday related trauma and I was honestly super frustrated that my in laws wanted to watch a "Christmas movie". But this movie legitimately healed something in me
This makes me so happy!! I despise the holidays, too. Im putting this on my list of movies to watch. Legit warmed my heart to read your comment. 🤗
Sergio Pablos was at Disney when The Emperor's New Groove was released, so it doesn't surprise me to see some of that echoing. It's a good dynamic.
@@ProjectKhopesh I didn’t know that, that’s super cool!
That’s the one thing I didn’t like in this movie, it was too similar
@@maireiselI have watched both of these movies hundreds of times, and these are not similar
My first watch I wasn't sure if that was David Spade and John Goodman lol
@@thedukeofchutney468Because Christians celebrate Christmas as the birth of the Messiah, which is not Jesus's role in Islam. He's a prophet.
I love that there’s no magic in this movie, just kindness and yet that makes it more magical.
Because a lot of them are staged.
PERFECTION. I cry every time
This bit of scene made me cry the most UGLY tears cause it's just a beautiful end to a story but a wonderful beginning to a well known holiday spirit😭😭
Klaus is definitely one of the best christmas movies, and it is an interesting take on the origins of Santa Claus. Great psychological study of the characters of Klaus.

I like it that she never learned English and just talk in her own language the entire movie
I literally thought to myself today, "I wish Cinema Therapy would do a video on Klaus for the holidays". As a teacher, the part of the film that always gets me is when Alva's eyes soften when she meets kids who have a genuine desire to learn.
That got to me too, such a sweet moment, it sparked love again for her chosen profession once more after being brutally crushed by the village.
One of the best Christmas movies I've EVER seen in my life. Klaus is a BEAUTIFUL movie. ❤🎄

I felt the same way!!! It is absolutely adorable, and he pulls it off really well.
It never fails to bring a tear to my eye. I feel the beauty of the moment more every time I watch that scene.
It's certainly one of all-time favorite animated Christmas movies. Perhaps even favorite animated movies in general.
I cry every time at that scene! It just reminds me how I love gift giving
I still bust a gut every time I see Jasper pass out letter kits like a dealer 🤣
I do when Jesper comes up with the Naughty List in order to scare the bully kid and the rap starts playing as he walks away xD "That's what you get when you mess with the postman".
@@M_JackOfAllTrades I'll be honest, that pulls me out(though Jesper coming up with the story and all is a great scene; just the music choice feels a little gimmicky is all).

Klaus has been a yearly watch for me ever since its release. My favorite scene is when Jesper and Klaus travel far to give Margu her sled, one of the many scenes in the movie that makes me teary eyed.

Indeed, it's great even without the music, but the music pushes it over the top.
omg YES Margu's sled arc was so so sweet i cry every time
Same here!! This is such a beautiful holiday movie, and Margu’s sled scene gets me every time.
What I like to call this type of animation style is Story Book. Because it looked like an illustration in a kid’s story book.
I agree and love how well they executed this vision perfectly. Sadly the movie wish doesn’t match in quality compared to this movie. Wish also wanted to execute the story book visual style but it doesn’t look polished enough to be a timeless movie
The story feels like it could have come from a children’s story book, too.
One thing I loved about the lighting in this movie is that it actually reminds me of the natural light in winter.
There is a line that hit me very hard in this movie, when the kids tell the teacher "could you teach us more?"
I am a science teacher, during my first job I tried to tell how interesting science could be to 6th grade students, so I told them cool facts about sponge bob or finding nemo, even capitan america and how some seeds can be frozen and then come again to life, one boy looked at me and said "wow teacher, could you teach us more?" and I thought "well, this is my life purpose".

Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire. Kindness spreads just like hate. I feel like these are the same message.

It's so heartwarming! ☺️
The way this movie completely blindsided me with the tears with the very last sentence. Wow. Glad you’re doing this one!!
Klaus is my little family's favorite animated holiday film. We instantly fell in love with it on our first watch through.
As an aspiring animator Klaus gave me hope that 2D will come back to western animation ❤
Hey, I'm the guy who wrote the software used for lighting the characters and I can assure you it doesn't use any machine learning of any sorts. A lot of artists worked on lighting the shots, it would be good not to disrespect their work thanks!
That's super cool to know
I cannot believe I missed this upload! Klaus is not just one of my all time favorite Christmas movies, it's one of my favorites films of all time, period! It's perhaps the first film I watched as an adult, that genuinely made me feel like a kid again! The song that plays when Margu gets her toy "Invisible", makes me cry every single time ❤
And as an amateur animator, this movie continues to BLOW my mind away!
Thanks for watching! Happy holidays!
I love this film, it's so perfect
If you guys want more Netflix films to study, Nimona and Sea Beast are prefect to analyze
Second that!
Our deepest condolences. Sending you big hug! 🫂❤️
I’m sorry for your loss
thank you @@Giosuke_Giogashikata
I love the scene where the wind and snow spiral around Jesper because it depicts that Klaus's wife is still with him and she's telling him not to give up on making toys
I can’t afford therapy, but watching these programs helps me to heal and grow in so many ways. I thank the two of you for helping me to examine my life and my issues. I have resolved many past pains from your wisdom.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching!
I've been watching this every Christmas since this came out. Such a beautiful movie. The artwork, the story, the humour - everything is just perfect.
Same
Since you guys asked for more hidden gems, I'd like to recommed The Sea Beast.
This is truly a Christmas movie that I will watch with my future kids.
yees! My favorite Christmas movie!! Such good story and message and FANTASTIC animation
Literally just watched this movie (for my annual watch, not the first time) last night, so i love that this dropped today
And yes!
Sorry your having to do 6 in a row 😅
The little Sami girl made my heart melt
The whole montage leading up to the scene where she gets her sled just makes my heart so so happy. It's just concentrated, sincere, feel-good, joy!
if you want recs, i think you'll enjoy nimona! it deals with themes of found family and prejudice. nimona is a chaotic lil bean and i love her so much.
but focusing more on klaus, i watched it the year it came out and was enteanced with the art. it's so pretty. klaus' arc of coming to terms with his loss got me real good. he's lived a life colored hy grief and it was so relieving to see him find joy again. it's amazing how this christmas movie really doesn't feel that cristmasy at all, except it really does.
Yes, I second Nimona! ❤❤❤
Second this! A therapy analysis on BES would be amazing!
Yes!!!!
As an adult i havent really seen many films that can still give me the Christmas feeling and in recent years this is one of the few. Really glad you guys are doing this
Something odd that i see on your faces. You both have such strong laugh lines. It shows a life lived. It weirdly makes me adore you both more. You guys are my hero's because you guys are so empathetic and good natured on here. Of course we dont see all of you on here but what we do see brings me such joy.
i actually squealed when i saw this because klaus is by far my FAVORITE christmas movie. thank you guys for doing this !!!!
21:27 “Don’t live to hate. Hate to live!“ - Sergeant Hatred, the Venture Brothers
I watched it for the first time last year. I was not in a good place and I cried a lot. It definitely helped me to get my joy for Christmas back❤
SO GLAD you're finally doing Klaus!!! Super underrated, but it became an instant annual tradition for me.
Klaus and Arthur Christmas are two fairly more recent Christmas movies that kinda came & went without much appreciation. I'm glad ya'll are covering Klaus!
Nimona is another wonderfully animated movie on Netflix that needs to be discussed!
This!
Klaus was an unexpected, unanticipated, instant Christmas classic in my eyes.
