The three bolts I had were 10mm, I used a 1/4 drive set and took the top bolt out first and worked my way to the bottom. Mine also had a red cap that went over the both hot leads on the solenoid.
In my truck, if I turn the key I do hear a click, so I'm assuming the solenoid is ok. I also hit starter with the hammer and it does free up the starter enough to turn the fly wheel. It's hard to get at so will likely have to replace the whole starter.
@@Dads_Junk I don't have it parked nearby, but after I worked on mine earlier, I remembered I've been having trouble with the linkage, so maybe it's not all the way in park. The gear indicator doesn't move on mine, so if it's a little out of gear, I won't know. I also didn't try tapping the starter with a hammer yet.
I was thinking the same thing. I need to change my starter as well; a lot of weird electrical issues on my '03 5.4, otherwise, it runs like a Lincoln and fights like a bear.

Thanks I have the exact same truck. Mine isn't making any noise at all when i turn the key. Do you think that could be the starter?
Could be solenoid on the fender well
@@Dads_Junk Thanks. You're the third person to say solenoid. My buddy I'm paying to help fix it keeps saying it's the neutral safety switch.

Mine is acting up and I can kinda jam it up in park and it will fire up
