I came up with this idea on my own several years ago for my Walbro with a non replaceable seat, except, I used jewelers rouge. Maybe if I had used lapping compound, I wouldn't have had to buy another carb.
I use to use 0000 steel wool to polish low speed needle jets and makes the engines carbitrate very smoothly. You can also use it to polish out the final coat of Tung oil on your grandma's dresser drawers.
Taryl, you should sell small quantities of fuel line on your website for grossly exagerated prices. As you know, fuel line is normally only sold by the reel. Some of us just like to have 36" of line of various sizes on hand. Many of us would pay a few dollars a foot to get some fuel line thrown in with that Slippers coffee mug. Just sayin'! Thanks for all of your work!
Thanks again for another amazing video and tip! What fuel lines should I stock from Stens that you would say are used the most for weed eaters, chainsaws, blows etc? Thanks for all you do for us new mechanics hopefully one day I can shake your hand and thank you in person. have a wonderful day.
Pretty cool idea! Many needles have a coating on them.....like a rubber type substance. I guess you wouldn't want to damage that stuff with lapping compound....I'm not sure though. Something to keep in mind.
Does this work on Honda mowers too with those rubberized tips? Normally it’s cheaper to replace the whole carb than it is the needle but I’ve thrown out so many still new looking Honda carbs for leaking needles. Would be awesome if this trick worked on those as well!
Lol man you are nuts Good tip though I've done it in the past. An old friend of mine was an aircraft mechanic for Canadian Air Force Who told me this trick Use to repair smalle engines in In his retirement.
It does work , true but it will only work on carbs with aluminum seats( needle with rubber tip). For carbs with removable rubber seats and non rubber tipped needle this process will not work.
Old school trick my dad uses is to coin the seat. Just whack the steel needle with a hammer to coin the brass seat and "fix" the sealing surface. Obviously does not work in all cases, but can get you going.
unless the part is not available, i just replace the entire carb. most are available on amazon for around $15 to $30 which is cheaper for the customer than working on the carb.
Another trick I’ve learned that will sometimes work on stubborn seats, is to use a small drill bit that is a size smaller than the needle. Put it in your drill and run it in reverse against the seat. Run it on SLOOWW speed! This will burnish the seat and help it seal. Once I’ve burnished, then I’ll polish it. Normally between the two processes, I can get it to seal.
That's a great idea. I have all the parts already in my garage. I always have fuel line for two strokes and four stroke engines. I also keep on hand lapping compound or hand for working on cylinder heads. Depending on the temperature here tomorrow I'm going to go over to the garage and give this a try.
Got a carb kit once and replaced needle and seat and the new needle and seat leaked right away.Old one wasn’t having an issue but was being proactive and put kit in.Ended up reusing old one.Never heard of this trick before. Will it work for rubber tipped needle??
Taryl -- show us how to clearance rocker to valve lash on a yamaha big twin, efi like bad boy uses on their outlaw z-turn. 6 valves and I don't see any adjustment anywhere - tried google too, nuthin...
Here’s one that works 99%. Get a steel bb not copper. Steel is usually perfectly round copper are not. It has to be bigger than the hole in the seat. Drop it in and use a punch and whack it several times. This will round out the seat. Hope this helps.
Taryl, I have seen quite a few of your videos and dont recall you bringing attention to your steel workbench. At least one that I have gotten to yet. You should show us how it is constructed, its size and how thick the top is. In other news I heard that the American Association of Orthodontist are looking for a new mascot. Now that you have some notoriety perhaps you can get your foot in the door over there?
I have a 1979 roper tractor with a opposed twin eight speed transmission. I can’t find the belt size anywhere on the internet I am not sure if the one on it is the right size .so I don’t won’t to size it up with a new one just in case it is the wrong size I want to get the correct size . Can you help me out
Nice! If you don't have lapping material, I've used toothpaste. Never thought of using the fuel line as an holder. You know what out you can use toothpaste on? Ha. Thanks
Im thinking any 1/8 inch diameter rod, metal, wood or plastic, and use a glue gun to tack the needle on the rod end.. i like the stability a solid object that i can control provides.
Another good idea is to take a closeup picture of the seat with your cell phone and blow it up to see if there is any noticeable damage or imperfections in the seat. On my Toro time cutter, it looked as though someone deliberately scored the seat with a small screwdriver or something. I ground a piece of 1/8 piano wire to match the angle of the needle, and made a brass guide to insert into the bore for a guide for the rod, and spun it with a drill with rubbing compound. Kept taking pictures until the score marks were gone, and it hasn't leaked since.
An old mechanic friend taught me to wad up a piece of steel wool and spin it inside the seat. Never thought of lapping the seat, nice little trick to add to the bag o' tricks. Thanks!
I use brazing rod with a beveled end to match the needle . Sometimes just changing the angles will make it seat .
Great tip Taryl. I think you are on another level... very very smart and creative. Thanks Taryl
I came up with this idea on my own several years ago for my Walbro with a non replaceable seat, except, I used jewelers rouge. Maybe if I had used lapping compound, I wouldn't have had to buy another carb.
Good
Tip! I use jewelers rouge!
Good idea. I polish stuff and I have Jewelers Rouge. But I don't have lapping compound so this was a good suggestion. Thanks brother
I use to use 0000 steel wool to polish low speed needle jets and makes the engines carbitrate very smoothly.
You can also use it to polish out the final coat of Tung oil on your grandma's dresser drawers.
This is a great idea providing that the needle is brass and doesn't have a rubber tip.

I think Taryl need to work with spaceX. Because he tha man with a plan!!!!!
No, he always says he's not working on the space shuttle.
Love the snacks, thanks!
Good tip Taryl your awesome buddy
I was here and learned something new
Thanks again for another amazing video and tip! What fuel lines should I stock from Stens that you would say are used the most for weed eaters, chainsaws, blows etc? Thanks for all you do for us new mechanics hopefully one day I can shake your hand and thank you in person. have a wonderful day.
Thanks Taryl 😊
Excellent tip! ...see how I dat that there? Tip, you know, like tip of the needle! Now, there’s your dinner!
Try the lapping compound for tooth paste ?? Keep er movin !
Awesome tip
I have a pair of carbs that leak on my old motorcycle,,,I will try this,,,thanks for the tip.
Little Johhnys gonna try this and Gwandpas gonna have to take him to the ER for a bloody toungue.
I use a Q-tip toothpaste and a drill works most times
Pretty cool idea! Many needles have a coating on them.....like a rubber type substance. I guess you wouldn't want to damage that stuff with lapping compound....I'm not sure though. Something to keep in mind.
Good little tip ill keep this one under my hat till needed
Sorry for the stupid question, novice with this topic, but how will you know needle is not sealing well in the seat? Thanks
Thank you!!!
Does this work on Honda mowers too with those rubberized tips? Normally it’s cheaper to replace the whole carb than it is the needle but I’ve thrown out so many still new looking Honda carbs for leaking needles. Would be awesome if this trick worked on those as well!
I never heard of that. Thanks for the tip.
Brilliant.
Never thought of that one 👍🏻
When I was a kid, my neighbor had a lap dog.
Where was this tip 30 years ago when i needed it?
Great tip
Nice one I like that idea
It really helped thanks
I used to use mothers polish with that method.
Have used lapping compound and drill bit in reverse
Why reverse?
Do what works. Thanks again.
Lol man you are nuts Good tip though I've done it in the past. An old friend of mine was an aircraft mechanic for Canadian Air Force Who told me this trick Use to repair smalle engines in In his retirement.
Excellent
Brilliant!
what is lapping?
Cept the tip is rubber??...
Cool video 😎
Ok looks good
Could my cat do this for me?
Just dump a can of carburetor stop leak in the tank.
aaaaaaand there goes your low micron fuel filter.
It obviously wouldn't work on needles with viton tips on them !
It does work , true but it will only work on carbs with aluminum seats( needle with rubber tip). For carbs with removable rubber seats and non rubber tipped needle this process will not work.
And remember to flush out the lapping compound from the carb. It's not great stuff inside the engine....
you should use a cotten -qtip not the needle. the rubber of the needle gets damaged when you do this. :(
With how little cost is involved with this method, I don't see a reason to not try it if needed.
Make sure that is a METAL tip needle, not rubber.
🤦♂️🤦♂️ it’s not a steel valve. That’s the problem with a leaky needle-you don’t want a ring/groove on the viton or brass tip. I’ll pass.
That's not how you spell carbitrator
Why does he wear fake teeth
Old school trick my dad uses is to coin the seat. Just whack the steel needle with a hammer to coin the brass seat and "fix" the sealing surface. Obviously does not work in all cases, but can get you going.
That's a good idea old chap, I usually use a qtip and metal polish but I like your method, it's more pleasing
There's your snack!
Thank you for the quick tip Taryl. Peace
Saw something similar on Bob's channel @doublewide6 👍
Weird doublewide 6 just had a needle lapping trick !!! different way though !! Great Tip !!! Thanks !!
This tip was too quick. I put on a Taryl video and get in the sack with the old lady. I can't ger r done in 2 minutes.
I lap my tip all the time!
unless the part is not available, i just replace the entire carb. most are available on amazon for around $15 to $30 which is cheaper for the customer than working on the carb.
Might try this on an old homelite genny I have with a Mikuni carb
Thanks for the info, No drippy here.
Great tip Taryl. I've sanded the tip of a needle when they are worn having a slight ridge. Worked.
ohh, yep, frash new seel, surface is made

or..you can get taryl to fix it for you if you cant. :)

Little at a time, work on your BLOOPER VIDEO for us.
Got a carb kit once and replaced needle and seat and the new needle and seat leaked right away.Old one wasn’t having an issue but was being proactive and put kit in.Ended up reusing old one.Never heard of this trick before. Will it work for rubber tipped needle??
Man.. you're full of genius ideas!!!!!! Thanks dudes! 🍺
Q tip always worked so far - good tip.
Taryl -- show us how to clearance rocker to valve lash on a yamaha big twin, efi like bad boy uses on their outlaw z-turn. 6 valves and I don't see any adjustment anywhere - tried google too, nuthin...
Taryl, you are a living, breathing genius!
Some types of toothpaste also works good. They are not as abrasive as valve lapping compound.
Here’s one that works 99%. Get a steel bb not copper. Steel is usually perfectly round copper are not. It has to be bigger than the hole in the seat. Drop it in and use a punch and whack it several times. This will round out the seat. Hope this helps.

Sorry can't follow of Facebook. Got rid of it. Never had Twitter
Good tip . Thank You.

Q tip works minty too
Fire it up fire it up

Im thinking any 1/8 inch diameter rod, metal, wood or plastic, and use a glue gun to tack the needle on the rod end.. i like the stability a solid object that i can control provides.
Or a hybrid taryl method..press a 3/4 inch tube section over the needle valve and slide the other end over the dull end of a 1/8 inch drill bit
Good tip mate..
Great Tip
And it won't work for rubber seats or viton tip needles
Doublewide6 just did one on this and his way works with ALL needle sizes. Must be careful not to remove too much with his way.
Another good idea is to take a closeup picture of the seat with your cell phone and blow it up to see if there is any noticeable damage or imperfections in the seat. Good tip. I have a couple stubborn one that I'll have to try that on sometime Thanks bud
Taryl have you ever tried using heat shrink tubing for the other sizes?
