I LOVE IT! You call us " pea brains!" LOLOLOL! All through this video, there was many opportunities to say "that's what she said" Lawn boy was a mystery and oddity in and of itself!
Gee thanks Gary Collins. I am from the UK, i have never owned a lawnboy, or seen one. In fact I don't even have a lawn mower BUT I can now sleep well safely in the knowledge that I could buy a lawnboy, clog it right up, and in a liqadey split, have it chouching again. Goodbye im off to find my bits 'n' bobs 😂
I still trim mow with an old Lawn Boy 5072, but use a 3/8 drill bit by hand only, it’s the second fastest & easiest way to get the carbon out as you have to pull the blade & muff cover off. Thanks for showing that!
Wow this was a super cool video. I would love it if this was a series for like a "Tool Tuesday" or like Fab Forums has a "Its Friday fool, and you need this tool" or something to that effect. Thanks for all the cool videos.
Im thinking that the notch milled into the end is there so, when working blind with the muffkin on, you have some feel for reference when you are through the hole. If making one, you really don’t need the roll pin. A shallow dimple would do for reference. Maybe a drop of orange paint in it.
I wonder if the cut in the end is there to put a piece of rubber tubing or something to make it a bit wider so it can hit the walls of those exhaust holes. Wire brush? It'd probably fall off and get stuck in there...
Great info , Mr. Dactyl. You are a well informed tool !! Just know that I've made odd application tools for five decades and men have watched me in total confusion 😂
I've got a mid 60's Lawnboy with a D-400 engine that I've bragged about on this channel a couple of times. Oh I said it started on the first or second pull, it had great power, it was wonderful. I hit a piece of firewood that fell off the stack and bent the crank. I pulled the motor off and pulled the cylinder off. It had a stuck top ring on a 2 ring piston and two of the 3 exhaust ports were plugged. I wonder what a good running Lawn Boy D-400 motor is like? Thanks Taryl. P.S. I guess you're supposed to clean those ports out. I had that mower for 40 years and never cleaned them once.
You must enjoy putting heli -coils in ? A “t” handle with a 1/2 - speedbore wood bit (i don’t remember exact speed bore size ) , open muffler side then clean out cylinder with 90 psi . and you’re good to go .
This tool just game me a great idea to make a tool to hold the Car valves up while i do the stem seals. going to use rope but risk of a knot and jamming trying to get it out and compressed air that suddenly fails, i think a static tool like this resting on the piston and pointing up for each vale keeping it up when collets are released. I think there is a plastic version out there for small engines or car ones? Anyway i have a spare head on the bench and will mark and perfect the tool before actually using it on the cars head with piston at TDC.
My neighbour had a low power lawn boy. Cleaned carb, no improvement, removed the muffler for no reason and discovered plugged exaust holes. I was 13 years old
Yay, I'm so smart! I'm so smart! I'm in Group 3 (or is it Group W?) that is baffled by this tool but at around :03:23, when he said it was for a pacific lawn mower, I said Lawn Boy and I was right! This is expecially exciting because when I hear "lawn mower" I think walk-behind but Taryl often means riding lawn tractor. So I'm handicapped and I still got it right! Now to continue the video and find out what this tool is And what it's for! (I love it when there's a quiz!!)
I need a restored L head Briggs for my 1970s Sensation mower, and another one for my Bobcat mower. Better Homes & Gardens sold those from some ad in the back.
In the early 2000's when I worked at a Lawn Boy dealer we still got lots of those old 2 strokes in for tune ups and decarbon jobs. We would just remove the muffler anyways because they always needed to be burned out with an acetylene torch so while it was off we cleaned the ports as well. They burned real dirty at 32:1 and clogged exhausts were very common even if you ran Lawn Boys low ash oil.
Very strange maintenance procedure, but if it works That's great. There are so many odd and weird tools that were made back 60+ years ago that I see at tractor shows and swap meets. I have a small file that says FO MO CO on it and can't figure out what era or application it belongs, but of course it was from Ford Motor Company.
The groove is most likely for knowing where the outer edges of the port is. Since the groove itself has an edge it can be used as a scraper from inside to out & not pulling carbon inwards
I have a old lawn boy i should see if it still runs they were very simple machines and i used Castrol 2 stroke oil in it same as my 75 Kawasaki 750 3 cylinder two stroke widowmaker made a nice smell .
I used lawnboy brand 2 cycle oil back in the day and it still clogged up the ports. It used to come in 6 pack cans with pull tops. That was a long time ago
Well that is interesting, my old man had that tool hanging on a pegboard in the garage never payed attention either, but the only reason I remember is that I threw it away when I cleaned out the garage after my parents passed away. We had an old Lawnboy when I was a kid I hated that mower.
I was made the home and garden lawn-mowing manager at the age of 8 years... and given the Antipodes equivalent of a Lawn Boy mower with the OMC engine and an alloy deck. I used that mower for 45 years before giving it (still working) to a workmate to cut his lawns. I used to replace the spark plug every 7 years and rotate the reeds every 14.... used the best 2 stroke mix oil possible...finally ending up with Stihl synthetic @ 50:1... I think I scraped out the carbon once early on..... then never again as it just didn't build up when decent 2 stoke oils were mixed at the "correct" ratio which got "leaner" with the oil as time progressed and the oil quality also got better. What did you hate about it?
somebody was thinking when they came up with that tool.probably grond that curve to clear that plug hole.maybe too many hamms?haha nice new shop taryl.doc neon does some pretty cool signs.jus sayin
Hey Taryl I'm a big 2 stroke afficionado but I don't do much with lawn stuff I'm a Powersports mechanic. What's the deal with the 3 hole exhaust port? I don't see the advantages of that. Seems they would have an oval or a bridged exhaust port which also wouldn't plug up so bad. Unless they wanted it to for service fees lol.
Just picked up a free kubota tg1860 for free had sat for 8 years. And it fired right up on the old diesel. Needs a key switch had to jump the solenoid but that’s about it. Oh and tires but what a score.
Hey taryl, my names Dylan, been a.long time fan from Pennsylvania, I need your help! I know you dont do two many onan B engines, but have a case ingersoll 448 with the onan and the infamous governor flyball spacer issue. Any way you could make a video talking a out replacing one or even showing how to do it? I have the new flyball spacer but don't trust anybody else's to show me what all I need to do to replace the spacer.
A nice oddity. I had one (found on the trash) that wasnt working well I put it aside and waited a day or so and it hit me that the exhust ports were clogged. They were and after a cleaning it worked great Nice tool. You dont need a roll pin for orientation, a grind mark will suffice.

You are a man of integrity and honesty Taryl!!
Very cool tool!
Interesting oddity. Thanks, Taryl.
Loved my Lawnboy 21" .
Only three of your videos have been applicable to my yard tractor, but I’ve watched almost all of them. 😂
Love me some taryl vids!
Definitely a specialty tool AKA GrassRat Back Scratcher for Back Scratch Fever.
We need more Faryl appearances!!
and that guy that looks like Uncle Andy from Andy2 He is cool!!
I think Taryl would be great for a Freddy Kruger Halloween edition
Love these midweek uploads!!
I LOVE IT! You call us " pea brains!" LOLOLOL! All through this video, there was many opportunities to say "that's what she said" Lawn boy was a mystery and oddity in and of itself!
As a huge 2 stroke fan I love lawn boy stuff
I Love This Channel!!
A day is lost that I cant learn something new. Thanks Taryl! :)
Interesting as usual. That new shop is looking very nice. So much room to organize everything. I love it.
HOW MUCH DID THE GUY AT THE PAWN SHOP OFFER YOU FOR IT
Gee thanks Gary Collins. I am from the UK, i have never owned a lawnboy, or seen one. That was awesome! Thanks for the information!🙋♂️

Love your bench
Good stuff! You’re right bout the older 2 cycle erl running kinda dirty, I remember LB’s smoking like crazy way back when I was a kid!
Thank you for sharing.👍
Well that's slicker than greased owl sh!t! Pretty smart tool!
Great info , Mr. Dactyl. You are a well informed tool !!

Another awesome episode, Taryl!!! Thanks, man! Whoda thunk it???? That's a very cool tool.
That display wall is pretty damn impressive. Nice work.
Thank was a good idea. I always took the muffer off to check the piston and cylinder
This guy is freaking awesome. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍👍👍
Great stuff, as usual. 😊

Couldn't a long armed (shaft) hex key (Allen wrench) of appropriate diameter have been used instead?
That's a cool tool. It looks like a gate latch. I bet the groove acts like a chisle.
Learned something new thanks taryl i've seen them before just never knew what it was for.
I had no idea what that was. This is another fine tool post, cheers !
The undercut serves to give an edge that will enhance the cutting of the carbon deposits.
Awesome video God Bless you and your family Amen
Sure, that's a hydro-spanner, Han Solo used that on the Falcon!
Love the old style beer neon
My neighbour had a low power lawn boy. Cleaned carb, no improvement, removed the muffler for no reason and discovered plugged exaust holes. I was 13 years old
Barry'd deep within corners of decaying mower shops
Don’t need the roll pin - just put an orientation mark on it with a file or a magic marker
Yay, I'm so smart! I'm so smart!

Specific, not pacific.

Depends which Coast you are near...?
That's brilliant! I always just used a screwdriver...
Memory lane wow!! I remember my grandfather buying one of these I wanna say 1989 or 90. My dad giving him crap for buying a bent piece of metal 😅
An old worn out riding mower has some of those on them!
That's a cool tool makes sense. I never own a lawnboy but it dose make.sence.😊
Looks like an old tie rod off a Murray riding mower lol
Veddy interesting, Taryl
Pretty neat
oh THAT kind of magazine 😊
I've had my mowers for over 40 years and they run excellent
Would the carbon then going in the muffkin start clogging it up? Or does it blow right through?
I would use it for pulling springs
I need a restored L head Briggs for my 1970s Sensation mower, and another one for my Bobcat mower. Better Homes & Gardens sold those from some ad in the back.

My dad had one in his toolbox, and I always wondered what it was for. He was a lawnboy owner since the 50's
Nice! 👍
I was looking forward to seeing you make one and bend the stock......
Shear genius and so funny with multiple personalities
I was completely stumped, until you said it could be a nose picker. Then I guessed it! Thanks again for sharing!
Looks like a proctocology exam tool!👀
Looks like the governor adjustment tool.😀
“Would lose lack of power”
😂😂😂
Eddie Murphy (A.K.A. Axel Foley) Ain't falling for no banana 🍌🍌 in the tailpipe! 😂
I'd take that over the short I just came from called yellow jackets in the exhaust 😂😂
My first thought is part of a linkage for a mower deck, or one some sort of one of those wire hose clamp tools.
Very strange maintenance procedure, but if it works That's great. There are so many odd and weird tools that were made back 60+ years ago that I see at tractor shows and swap meets. I'm in the 3rd group - now back to the video 🤣
When you said it was for a specific mower, I guessed Lawn-Boy, but I had no idea on its purpose. Neat tool!
The groove is most likely for knowing where the outer edges of the port is. Since the groove itself has an edge it can be used as a scraper from inside to out & not pulling carbon inwards
I do not know about you but I got in the box last night it was great you should try it

Lawnboys were everywhere back in the 80's so this little tool would have been handy.Thought it was a spring tensioner for the pull rope.
Well that is interesting, my old man had that tool hanging on a pegboard in the garage never payed attention either, but the only reason I remember is that I threw it away when I cleaned out the garage after my parents passed away. We had an old Lawnboy when I was a kid I hated that mower.

Only Taryl could make an interesting vid on a bend bit of metal.
Tayrl I miss the ascot and the smoking jacket please bring it back
somebody was thinking when they came up with that tool.probably grond that curve to clear that plug hole.maybe too many hamms?haha nice new shop taryl.doc neon does some pretty cool signs.jus sayin
I want to order that foot kick starter.
1st thing I thought when you said "weird tool" was Ronnie!
Maybe that undercut at the bend is to put some kind of round brush ?
The undercut on the end is so it won’t get jammed in the outside holes due to the angle.
The voice over for LMMAO using Slipper chills me to the bone.
What could be next?
Use tubing and use it in conjunction with a shop vac
Hey taryl is that an old paging USA beeper clipped on your hat lol
Us tools gotta stick together.
It's for thick shakes and the pin is to rest on the edge of the cup.
Looks like a spring puller
That's what I thought
@@PaRoughandTumble well if it started as an “exhaust port gunk remover” it can now be repurposed to stretch tension springs!

Yup I used a wooden dowl. Guilty
Video starts at 4:25
Make it out of copper round stick.
Easier to machine it and won't scratch the cylinder bore.
Coming from a retired journeyman machinist of 40 years😊
