I’ve owned a CX60 PHEV Homura in the UK since March 2023. It has had two official recalls, plus my dealer has upgraded door insulation and dampers, and installed about a dozen software updates for safety systems and transmission. However, it has only been off the road for four days for these mechanical issues and I was offered a replacement vehicle during the inconvenience. There is no doubt that Mazda has used me as an unofficial beta tester, but I now have a car that I love, having previously owned Mercedes, Jaguar and Audi. I saved around £10,000 compared to their equivalents and yes, I was initially disappointed with quality of some aspects, but my dealer has genuinely remedied everything.
In future, I might think twice before buying ANY car in its first year of production, but now Mazda has put the early faults right, my car is fine, and superior to a Volvo XC60 PHEV that I recently had on loan for two weeks (my Mazda needed body repairs after somebody collided with me) which has a diabolical infotainment/control screen and feels like driving a tank compared to the agile CX60. Most CX60 moans are about the ride, which at 36/36 PSI on supplied Bridgestone Alenza tyres can feel like the annoying find every bump run-flats on a Mercedes E350. But up the pressures to 41/42 (as recommended by Mazda for a five person load) and it drives like a different car. I am now highly satisfied, but recommend purchasers check that all updates including software are current, notably in 2022 and 2023 cars. You are then likely to find a bargain, as so many owners were less patient than me.
It breaks my heart - but I completely agree with this review. I’ve been a Mazda-lover for the last 15 years, forever impressed by the vast majority of their range. However with the CX-60, they really have missed the mark in a number of categories. I remember driving it the first day my local dealer had a registered demo (thanks to my connections at said dealer), and even organised to take it for a 2-hour jaunt to see how it would fit into my lifestyle the following weekend. The engine (the diesel)? A peach. The interior? A lovely place to be, albeit more cramped than I anticipated. The ride? Noticeably unsettled and unrefined. The cabin noise? More pronounced than you’d think. And the gearbox? When on the move, it’s not bad, however as soon as you’re at low speeds, taking off from a standstill, or especially reversing up a hill (during which the entire car shakes and shudders under very light throttle) the gearbox reveals how underbaked it is. I’m still a huge Mazda fan, however it’s hard to consider the CX-60. If Mazda addresses the rough ride, overall refinement, and especially the gearbox (just fit the ZF 8-speed like in the F-Pace), then I will seriously consider putting one in my garage. Until that time however, the CX-60 is an unfinished vehicle from a manufacturer that knows far better. Sorry Mazda.
Have had no problems with my petrol cx60! Rides better than my cx5 and is way more upmarket! Very happy Mazda, you’ve done it again ! Fantastic!

I got my cx60 2024 model (3.3L e-skyactiv G version) last week here in Dubai UAE. So far I’m extremely happy with the car. The transmission is so smooth, absolutely nothing abnormal noted so far. The car is very comfortable and the engine noise is just amazing! Face recognition and safety e features (lane assistance and dynamic cruze control) are some of the high technology features in this car in my view. I’m wondering the issues listed here doesn’t apply to my model (ps: mine is the mild hybrid version).
@@douglasdomingues8206 same here. I bought a petrol 3.3l mild hybrid and have nothing but praise for Mazda! Had a cx5 before and the new one rides slightly better with similar road noise!

Excellent honest review. I own a CX-60 PHEV in Portugal since November 2022. I was so impressed with the interior and the incredible torque I just bought it. Is fair to say that in summer 2022 there were not too many PHEV's to choose from. All the problems mentioned in the video are true. Two recalls that included a long laundry list happened and when asked if I liked the car I answered that it was too firm , poorly isolated, and it behaved strange at slow speeds. Without any questions they mounted extra insulation on the four doors and replaced the dumpers. This plus the updates did a substantial improvement. I believe the suspension is acceptable but it would need adaptive or pneumatic dampers to improve further , the transmission not perfect at slow speeds but not too bad either. I wonder if these improvements were made on the unit on test.
Sounds like they beta tested this new platform on you guys. They are making incremental improvements as data comes in which is good but nobody likes being a test dummy.
maybe you are right. Everything is relative. On my previous VW that had issues they never aknowledged them and I trade in the car with all it's issues. They had 3 years to fix it but ni motivation at all. I would not know what a concrete complains to do to Mazda despite that I can't deny that owners have had issues.@@user-tg8xx1qw6h
@@ET-cj8jo For the time being I save half of the monthly payment that should have gone tot the gas station instead. I did not experienced any trouble with the car at all. I could not have a car that powerful in Europe because I would need 10 to 12 lts. of gasoline /100 at 2 € per litre. As I charge it every night I go to the gas station 3-5 time a year, my electricity bill only represent the equivalent of 1 1/2 litre go gasoline per 100 km. The reliability issue is more dependent on who builds the car than the technology. Mazda, Toyota , Honda are safe bets.
At that price tag, seriously it has to be pretty special car, the "oh but it's reliable" won't cut it. Needs to be full package.

Someone from Germany here. The car is actually good when you buy one with a production date past 08/2023. The first ones had to many faults which newer one dont have. Furthermore I highly recommend to change the dampers to Koni Dampers than this car is perfect for this price point.
Greetings! What do you think about Mazda diesel engines reliability? I was told Germans would sell their Mazda 6/CX5 at about 170 000 km just before the turbo fails. Or maybe it is the bad quality of diesel fuel in certain countries of Eastern Europe that kills the Skyactive-D as they get imported second-hand here. A few mechanics told me to avoid the Skyactive D and now I can't help but wonder how the new generation inline 6 diesel would fare?!
I've got my car booked for the suspension upgrade next week. Reading the forums, those who already have upgraded have mentioned the ride and transmission has improved a lot and it's now smooth.
This is not a car suitable for that price point in Australia. It is a 45k car.

Mine is from Sept 2023 and since I had the last 8 software updates, I'm a happy CX-60 owner.
Thanks for the review Tom & team. The CX-60 diesel and PHEV have been on my shortlist and I think disappointingly my shortlist is now a little shorter. Sad because Mazda has done some good things with this car but as a family car with a little one sleeping we’re going to need something more polished than this.
Petrol GT doesn't have any problem at all. Such a smooth car to drive and it's all worth the money being spent on it. Went for many long drives and pick up to ride quality - everything was super enjoyable and top quality.
Great honest clear take on the CX-60. This is why you always wait for a facelift or V2 of a new model. Never adopt right off the bat. I'd love to see a Long-Term review of the N Sedan. Its been on my list for a while, but I don't know how it would be as a daily car.

A glance at one beside a MAZDA 6 Wagon had me wondering - why would anyone pay a huge premium on the inferior CX60. That's without driving it though.

Boot space is 570 litres in the UK, so they make it smaller in Australia? I drove one, never had any issue with ride quality, wasn't abysmal at all
Issues appear with servicing the INLINE 6 if any faults due to its complexity and restricted access. In some cases the entire engine has to be removed to access areas which normally should be simple fixes.
some genius place the inline 6 engine the other way around. Meaning the timing chain at the back, so all the accessories such as water pum or even starter motor located at the back of the engine. So any servicing on this side of the engine requires to take the whole engine down. Dont know why Mazda would do this ..

It appears Mazda Australia has decided to belatedly upgrade the CX-60's suspension and transmission - once we test a vehicle with the fixes incorporated, we will let you what we think. The proof will be in the driving, but on first impressions, it is good to see Mazda working to fix the issues, even if the car should have been launched without these serious bugs.

Good review. I was thinking about buying one and took it for a short test drive. Good first impressions, but in the end I decided to stick with my Mazda 6 turbo..
Same we decided to stick with our CX5 for now.
I love my 6 Wagon Atenza with 2.5L turbo, the only thing I hate is I-Stop, can easily be disable by modding the switch in the hood latch (google it) but I just make it a a habit to press the i-stop off button once i put on my seat belt :)
Don't trade your 6 turbo yet particularly if it's just for a SUV. The 6 is such a treat to drive.

Personally opinion not much more passenger and cargo space compared to our CX5, road nose, firm ride and of course a significant step up in price compared to the CX5 means for the first time in a long time that our next car won’t be a Mazda
Replace the CX-5 with an CX-5 or CX-50 depending of your region ... that is a much nicer car atm.

We test drove the petrol six last year and noted the transmission issue at slow speed and start/stop system was terrible. Bought an NX350h instead

Absolutely agree with your last point- For me, on paper, it ticked all the boxes in terms of size, power and comfort/luxury (PHEV). The sum is less than its parts in real life, seriously considering trading in for the new Skoda Superb instead before my CX 60 hits the 10 KKm mark...
I have a PHEV in the UK and after 10K miles my only complaint is the over zealous safety stuff. The ride isn't perfect but better than some other premium brands in terms of handling. I guess its what you are used to but I like the sporty handling for such a big car!
Already been recalled twice since release for serious issues. No amount of leather in the interior can cover up flawed design
Had the Car 11mths excellent car. 2 recalls for steering gear and update electrics. No road noise , suspension is just how I like it.
I own a PHEV Azami. Objects and people fly off their seats on most bumps at slower than speed limits especially at the correct tyre pressure, I noticed higher pressure minimizes this and screaming passengers. Cabin is indeed noisy, and apart from the road noise there is a lot of noise coming off everywhere - cup holders, roof, boot, sunnies compartment which doesnt sound to far from the car I've moved from - a 2005 territory with 260K on the clock, and I would say the old SUV rides a tad better. I'm bringing my car to the dealer on Monday to fix the boot and moonroof noise, for most on my (long) list, they don't have a fix yet.
I just don’t understand how a car company like Mazda can sign off on and release a half finished or poorly finished vehicle!? Are they hoping we won’t notice? What on earth are they thinking?
I guess they were caught by how the market developed. When Mazda decided to invest in RWD platform with inline six cylinder markets the overall market switched towards EVs. Somehow I assume they feared being too late to the party in the end and therefore rushed development to bring it to dealers as quick as possible. And that went horribly wrong...
It's their first generation version of the new platform so there's bound to be a few niggles here and there, which should be improved down the life of the cx60. But again, there's no excuse to spend that much on a work-in-progress vehicle
This kind of roughness certainly doesn't fit Mazda's recent trajectory. The theory that the platform (or vehicles on it) were rushed to market to get ahead of a changing market shifting in part to EVs makes some sense to me but nobody has really gotten to the bottom of this story yet.

My new CX5 Akera is very nice. Don’t know why someone would pay $20,000 more for a CX60.
Guys please advise😭 not enjoyingwhatvim paying for: Driving a Mazda CX-60,bought it brand new May 2023 at Mazda Rustenburg Leon's Motors. Whilst driving home from the dealer noticed the steering is hard which causes the car to swey, reported that to the Dealer sales manager the following day and he said its normal as the cat is still brand new. After the first service I get a call from Mazda SA saying I need to take in the vehicle to the nearest Mazda dealership as they need to change steering springs on all Mazda CX-60s, i might have noticed the hard steering whilst driving. This is 15000 kms after I had already reported it. The day I fetched the car from 1st service I realized the front ligh has funny sounds as if it has boiling water in it, reported it and they requested I bring it in for diagnostics, they said they can't find the problem they would need to change the entire lamb/light send it to the manufacturer in Japan, till today when I ask for report from manufacturer of the cause of the problem, nothing. 3rd incident: car starts making sounds on the rear left wheel whilst in motion, took it in as usual to report it, they say it's normal its the exhaust, when a brand new car gets heated oils flow to where they are supposed to it eventually makes that sound signaling it's cooling itself off. Take their word for it and leave, now the sound is worse, you hear it even when the windows are closed and playing music on a 20volume. 4th incident car starts misfiring and switches off on a free way and switches off, gives an Engen malfunction message, I report it as usual to Mazda SA, its towed to the same dealership I purchased it and have been reporting all these faults/incidents, they connect it to a laptop, then they test drove and gave saying problem resolved, the cause might be rat damage as they saw traces of rat stools in the bonet . Weeks later, same problem occurs Engen Malfunction 5th incident. Repoted it to mazda sA they requested I take the car in again to the same dealership, connected it again to a laptop, they test drove it and gave to me saying problem solved, when I ask what was the cause they say maybe when I took it for car wash they left the agnition on it affected the battery power. 6th incident: on our way to a family vacation destination, which is 7 hours away from home, car misfires, switches off and gives same message "Engen Malfunction have the vehicle inspected", we reported it to Mazda SA and they arranged for us to hire a vehicle and towed our car to nearest dealership which was Bethlem. Went to and from vacation with the hired car. During the week Mazda SA informs us car is ready collection they can't find a tow car to bring the car home to us, can we drive to Bethlehem to fetch it they will reimburse petrol costs. We drove there, got the around 17h00 as they were about to close. Workshop said the problem was the plugs 2 of them were loose and needed to be cleaned, they said they saw no trace of rat damage. We took the car and drove out of the dealership around 18h00, grabbed something to eat in that town and left for home around 19h00. 10 minutes out of that town, 7th incident occurred, car misfires and shows the "Engen malfunction" message again🥹. We are in the middle of no where, cant get hold of Mazda SA, insurance says they can only tow the car and 2 people, we are with our two kids. We now drive the powerless car on 60km per hours speed, 5 hours awayfrom home😥 , arrived home 03h00😭. Called Mazda SA the following day and they requested we bring in the to that same dealership as before, they requested we arrange removal of all foreign units installed in the car(tracking units), week after they call saying the car is ready they suspect the cause was those devices as they test drove it and it doesn't show that message. They suggested I drive it for a week and see what happens, I told a week isnt enough to conclude the problem was with the devices and the other incidents occurred weeks after they had checked the car. Took the car anyway, noticed when you eccellarate it cuts as a sign of loosing power, reported it and took the car in 8th incident, they connected it to a laptop and test drove and said its fine the car is adjusting to my speed of driving as it was reset to its original settings. Today I met a friend driving the same vehicle, he asks how the car is treating us, I tell him out experience, guess what, his car has given him the same message last week, he took it in and was told it might be rat damage, same reason i was given the 1st time.🫨 Called Mazda SA requesting for a report on all incidents as the problem isnt occurring on only our car, the managers tells me I should bring the car in Monday they will send in technician from Jo'burg to look at the car. I asked him does he really expect to drive a car I reported it has a power malfunction for another weekend, he's ever said he will call me back and not taking my calls😭.
Well thank you I was about to buy one, I still consider the new Mazda is the best choice in this price range, but I think I will wait for any changes on the car.
Wow, I was considering getting a CX90 diesel. If the bigger sibling is as bad when it comes to cabin noise, I’ll give it a pass
To be fair Mazda keeps improving the model in small steps (software and mechanics), but I had to replace the really bad shocks myself... they are replaced in new cars though... in 1-2 years it will be a great car ... Just not yet indeed.
On March 25th 2024, Mazda Australia has acknowledged ride and transmission issue. Free Suspension upgrade for models before Sep 2023 will be rolled out for the rear shock absorbers and PCM software update to fix transmission issues.
People have already claimed irs a massive improvement. I've got mine booked and will report back.

It does
You get what you pay for. Its 25% less than a similar specced BMW or Merc so you can't expect BMW or Merc ride quality. Even volvos cost a fortune these days. I do think the clutch based autobox is a bad idea though , torque converters last forever treated well, friction clutch systems by their nature don't.
automatic clutches are generally not dry clutches and do last forever, wear is minimal because they use viscous coupling.
Great review! I am basically a fan boy of Mazda and I love almost every aspect of my CX-8. However Mazda really dropped the ball on this one. The in-line 6 is a gem but I can't believe they didn't put the same effort into other things, or maybe they did but got it really wrong? This have me serviously worry about Mazda's future in Australia.

Beautiful car, but version 2.0 needs 19" Wheels to fix the ride quality, suspension revamp, transmission remapping because you know they're now stuck with that transmission, and they need to use the fiber/felt wheel arch lining that European cars use to kill tire noise. Then it would be a great car. Right now they've focused on the looks and appearance of luxury, not the actual luxury experience.
I love the way Mazda try to sneak a subpar car into the luxury segment hoping no one will notice. If this works out they will push the price up 5-10k for next release. You can’t expect this with the level of BMW, Benz and Audi top ones.

I have sold mine cx60 diesel , reliable but slow gear shifting, too sensible driving assistant system, low battery warning alarm even if fully loaded, impossible to fill normally the tank due to a flat hose it means that the last 2,5 gallons takes at least 5 minutes to achieve the full filling. The engine itself is ok but the gear ratio are not short even in 8th gear, the cornering capabilities are poor as well as the steering feedback. The best is bird view camera for high definition. If you like to drive avoid it because it is a kind of boring.
10000 km service intervals?? Not going anywhere near this till Gen 2 once they've ironed out the issues.
100% agree, I bought the PHEV and I am at times embarrassed by the car and find myself having to explain to my passenger that it's not me doing dangerous driving, it is the bloody car.. Worst thing, and most dangerous is a sudden acceleration for a second while you are coasting in behind another car or coming into a corner. I so wish I'd held off for a while before buying it.
I've found that if you drive it like you hate it and it loves it.. Drive it gently and it crashes, bangs and jolts through the gears on a regular basis

This car was on my radar, hoped it would be great. Then the details, like no adaptive suspension which even mid-tier vehicles have. The fact they were prepared to invest in a diesel was a big thumbs up. But it's somewhat under powered for what it is. Then there are the refinement issues. Real shame, I hope they take the criticism onboard and improve it rather than drop it.
Since when is 250hp and 400lb/ft of torque underpowered? With other manufacturers for a similar price you'll only get some gutless 4 banger.
@@neilrobertson811 An untuned turbo 2.0L can reach close that torque level. I'm no fan of any 4 cylinder in a vehicle of this size, but a 3.3L V6 TD is capable of much better performance. Around 8 sec to 100km in a premium 'sport' vehicle just isn't that good. This car was on my radar as I'm looking to replace a 4.1 V8D that pumps out 850nm and can hit 100 in 5.4 seconds and returns 8l/100lm (real world, not just manufacturers spec).
@@neilrobertson811And just to add, I'm supposed to be the target buyer of this vehicle - a premium SUV driver. It's intended to attract those buyers, not to push a CX-5 driver to spend a sizeable chunk more. And to reiterate if it wasn't clear from my original comment, I was hopeful Mazda would knock it out of the park.
@@guser7137A standard 2L diesel turbo won't get close to 400lb/ft (are you confusing it with Nm?). However you can boost any engine to any power and torque but power output is usually inversely proportional to longevity and fuel economy. Here even the 250hp engine does 43mpg and is probably good for 300K miles, the 200hp one will probably do 500K. Its why you have 16 litre truck engines that "only" produce 600hp.

What is it with people complaining about the lack of shopping bag holders. Now I do have a Mazda 3 so consider me biased but I never felt the need for them. Is getting a bunch of plastic bags some rich people ritual i'm too poor to understand? I mean seriously everyone is complaining about that. I had them in my old mazda 3 and never used them...
Seems to be a very common conclusion, under cooked in some key areas which is a shame, it looks good inside and out. One thing they won’t be able to fix with a revision sadly I’d the classically poor Mazda packaging..

Lexus and toyota struggle to make attractive cars like land rover or some of the other euro SUVs. Mazda SUVs look good particularly inside and are starting to look premium like the European designs.

Until DPF, EGR valve issues like all modern diesels have show their head. Not to mention Mazda has an absolutely horrendous history when it comes to diesels i.e. CX-5 Diesels
@@dbanbury01 also the engine being backward like an audi with the timing chains and high pressure fuel pump being on the back of the engine looks like it will need the engine and trans removed to get to these items i wouldn't own one with over 100k kms
Yes no diesel for me either ...the " saving " on fuel is not worth the problems later ....
AT $85k It sounds disappointing. I am willing to bet the next facelift for this car will see great improvements.

The problem is that ordinary people shouldn’t need to do a custom suspension aftermarket changeover on a brand new car.

Mazda cx60 lane assist system on highway is terrible. They barely hold you in the centre of the lane when driving on highway. Hyundai and Kia’s lane centring assist steer you in the Conner without touching the wheels. Mazda should work on with their lane assist system and get lane centring assist like all other competitors.
Poor ride quality has been pointed out by users in Japan as well and one garage in Kobe Japan started manually fixing it. The guy’s name is “hidepon” and he has his UA-cam channel showing how to do it.
They have been paid much costs for their car's good looking only despite not big company. So the rest can be effortlessly guessed.

Its very disappointing that this Mazda has these ride quality and NVH issues. Its not as if they just started making cars yesterday! And its not anything new. I have a '15 Mazda6 which gets a lot of road noise in the cabin. Other than that, its been a great car. It seems to be a case of 2 steps forward and one back.

You obviously don't know about the TSB sent to Mazda dealers on the 25th March that says all CX-60 models and variants will receive new suspension and shock absorbers.

I bought a CX60 Sport PHEV and picked up the vehicle last August without test driving the vehicle as i thought Mazda was a reputable company with good reputation however after owning it for a month i wanted to get rid of it. The ride is terrible, especially if you’re in the back seat and the transmission is one i would not classify as premium.
It has been 7 months now and 9000kms later am still not been contacted by my dealer to advise of any software upgrade to fix the transmission setup.
I didn’t even get a response from Mazda for the two important/critical recalls as i had to ring the dealer where i bought the vehicle to book it in. NOT good service amd support, Mazda!!!
After driving the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV i had tears because the Mitsubishi was a much more PREMIUM vehicle than the CX60 Sport PHEV i bought.

I was at a Mazda dealer today and made a comment that there is no way I’d buy a CX-60 with the ride as bad as it is. He said just today Mazda had announced a free retrofit of new suspension package for CX-60. Fingers crossed!

They are probably busy and short handed. Nobody is going to calm you these days. You have to call them yourself and advocate for yourself. This is also true with doctors offices and all business across the globe now: the pandemic killed people’s customer focus. So you have to do the work; I deal with this daily. People barely show up to work, they want big pay raises, and then they don’t care about calling customers or patients so we all have to take initiative or you will never hear from them: my family owns dealerships. I’m a doctor. And everyone where I live in the USA tells people, nobody is going to call you. It’s rare and you are lucky if you get a call. People are allowed to be lazy now because we let them get away with it.
I drive one and it’s lovely - smoother and powerful. What a negative review.
Mazda is a big seller in Oz only, globally it's a small car brand and it's got a small R&D and testing budget and facilities accordingly. Unfortunately whatever they focus whatever they put their money on doesn't always work out well. In the long term Mazda has a horrible reputation with its 2.2 diesel so it will be interesting to see how this goes after the warranty runs out.
The CX60 problems were apparent in Europe well before it was released in Australia and there was talk that some issues would be fixed but nothing was done.

When Mazda invested heavily in developing a new 6-cylinder engine platform in the 2020s, the entire brand was at risk of a crash. They made an extremely risky gamble as they bet Australia and New Zealand would not introduce any fuel efficiency standard by 2030. Unfortunately, they seem to be wrong. The same problem happened to Ford, which developed a new 3.0 V6 turbo diesel engine for the Ranger family. Instead, they should have started working on making a plug-in hybrid system at the beginning of the development of the new Ranger.

Ford does a good job of making the V6 petrol exclusively for the top-end Raptor version. However, the whole industry should consider optimising the LCV market in terms of powertrain efficiency.

I am puzzled on how Mazda released this product. Honestly bad packaging I don’t think is a big problem. Mazda is notorious for its bad packaging and people simply go ahead with this, they know and don’t care much. Transmission will be refined in time so I am sure we just need to wait a bit, already around people says that CX90 calibration is better than cx60. But suspensions…. How they could drop the ball on something like this??? This is a major red flag for any customer and in particularly Mazda ones. I am not sure how can be that they are not scrambling to solve this ASAP.
I agree the packaging seems fine and everyone in my family buys Mazdas and we make it work. I trade smaller interiors for all the pros I see in Mazda.

I’m sorry but I would take the BMW or Audi any day of the week. $84k for a Mazda is way too much money in view.
The euros alway get the engineering right. A base model BMW will always be better than an upsec Mazda etc. No amount of leather & gizmos will compensate. Mazda really missed a trick here they needed to spend a few more months testing before releasing a half cocked version.
