    I’m an owner of a Cx60 diesel 254hp. I’ve just arrived from Germany to Catalonia and it has only consummed an impresive 5.6 litres. This could be another important difference between both cars that I wish to be compared in a further video test. The only thing I can say is that I’m really happy and satisfied. The sound of the doors does’nt cost 20k, mainly if you don’t have and X3 to compare them. 😉😉😉

    Both cars are great. The battery is noticeable bigger in the Mazda and 55 to 65 km can be achieved specially if the car is not totally new. I have complained to the dealer about the road noise and the suspension being on the stiff side. They replaced the 4 shock absorbers added insulation to the doors and made a bunch of software updates. It runs smoother, it became more silent. The transmission still does some strange things on low speed but very rarely. Seems that Mazda is trying hard to perfect their CX-60.

    I watched this review with especial interest because it more or less repeats a trade off I made earlier this year. I found the review a great detailed comparison. In my case I chose the Mazda CX60 PHEV because the BMW did not appear to me to offer €17k worth of extra premium. The BMW is clearly the better car as Thomas rightly concludes but not €17k better. So at what price point premium would I choose the BMW. At a €5k premium the BMW would be a no brainer, but where between €5k and €10k would tip the balance? At over €10k the Mazda is the clear winner for my circumstances, especially as I am able to make heavy use of its somewhat better EV range and charge at home (with PV renewables).
    What this comparison does help us do is ask what premium characteristics are enough and at what price? I think this will set a natural upper limit on how far premium brands can continue to move upmarket without regard to price in pursuit of profit. Before long they are going to have to return to doing more with less, if only because Asia led by China is coming if not already here.
    A final point is that if the comparison had been made with the comparable Mercedes instead of the BMW, the Mercedes would have lost even at zero price premium based on its completely unworkable interior UI/UX experience.

      @18_rabbit Рік тому

      very interesting. I'd question though about the cost savings to you of the free power u do get w/ your home energy set up, which is very sweet ,but i wonder how much savings that really would be in the differential between the two cars (such a thin one).

    • @PaulMeier-cu3ds
      @PaulMeier-cu3ds Рік тому +1

      @@18_rabbit
      To be absolutely clear, the savings would be a lot less without our home renewables where the marginal cost of a fill up is zero. Breakeven with diesel in the UK at the moment occurs when electricity is about £0.70kwh. Our peak rate at home from the grid is £0.34 and our off peak rate is £0.19, so there are savings to be had with electricity from the grid. However when you have to charge using the public charging network typical charges can be between £0.50 and £1.00, in which case savings become marginal and the nuisance of having to find a charger and then wait around for charging become more pronounced.
      I would not have a PHEV let alone a full EV if I had to rely on public charging at the moment, given the higher capital costs of any sort of EV.

      I think BMW is 17k better. Especially in 5 years from now when you'll be selling it and it's gonna be worth much more than the Mazda. Also, BMW in Europe gives you 5 years free servicing and maintenance, and that's already like 2-3k euros in itself.

      Fair enough.
      I am not sure you are right about the depreciation. My Mazda has depreciated horribly in just a year, but I think the BMW has lost more because it had more to lose in the first place. I doubt many people buy a car with depreciation in mind, and it is usually a question of heart over head when you decide to buy.
      Now having had the Mazda for about 18 months and also after driving other equivalent cars such as BMW, I find them just too heavy. I want something a bit more agile, and probably a bit smaller. I hope to be able to change in spring next year.

Mazda LOOKS nice, but still has a lot of room for improvement to become really premium. They've nailed the interior trim, but have more to do in other areas to become premium.

    Hi Thomas, good review again! I actually had to make this decision. After 4 years of BMW 330e (buying it after watching your review back then!) and 30 years of VW/Audi/BMW, I now for the first time decided to buy the Mazda. I ordered the CX60. PHEV works for me and the Mazda has a bit more battery capacity, allowing me the do my daily work run completly electric. My max budget is about 62-63k Euro. X3 in the Netherlands would be 85k+ in not even the same trim. So, I could only consider the X1 (we want to move to SUV), but the X1 PHEV is not the drivetrain from my 330e, but it is a 3 cilinder petrol, and that is not acceptable for me for a 60k+ vehicle! Also BMW took the 'druck-dreh-schalter' out of the X1 which I hate. I loved it in the recent two bmw 3's and the two A4's I drove. The Mazda still has that, and also more phycical buttons then the X1 to. This, combined with the larger boot, the 17kW battery and 50 liter fuel tank plus the premium feel I got, made me make the step. To be clear; I fully understand the differences you point out and I am willing to pay a bit more for that (always have done), but this difference is just to big. I also agree that having some sportseats on the pricelist of the Mazda would have been better (I saw you had the sports-seats in the M equiped X3 and I also enjoy those in my BMW 🙂). So, I am am curious how it will work out! In 3-4 years I will have driven 200k with the Mazda, let's see (will be delivered in September). Keep on doing the good work, you do very top reviews. Best regards, from Holland. Gerrit

      Good report - I'm also looking for something to replace my 330e M Sport Touring and the CX-60 is top of the list. I prefer estate/touring cars to be honest, but SUV's seem to be so popular in the UK that estate cars are going out of fashion. The CX-60 is cheaper for company car tax since it has a longer electric range which is a HUGE bonus for anyone having a car through their company in the UK.

      @@Dondly Hi, yes happy to answer! We have already run the CX60 for 10 months now (33k kilometers on it). The car is really spacious! Lot's of room in the front back and bagage. Height (184) is no problem at all, I am 185 and more than enough head room. The car initially had some small issues which are now solved with a factory recall and a main software update. I had an initial model, new cars now will be perfectly OK. What I really like is the high quality intrior (coming from BMW and 3 Audi's!). It still got the I-drive type of controller, which is much better than only touch screen. Also the Apple carplay is integrated really well. Much better than in my BMW 3 series. I can navigate on Google, switch to Mazda menu for a setting and just by using the buttons around the controler go back to nav screen for example. What is better on the BMW is the gearbox. The ZF has a liquid power converter (conventional set-up). The Mazda is a 'dry' 8 speed. This makes that you feel the gear switches more. Not at all bad, just not premium in that way. So I am really happy with the car! Also the dealer support is great, but that depends of course on the individual dealer (my BMW dealer was also really good).

      Maybe the stiffness adds to the handling in some way.
      I'm picking up mine in 2 weeks here in Melbourne.
      Mine will hardly see a shit road unless I'm out in the country which is less than twice a year.
      I'm willing to put up with a slightly stiff set up for more a confident drive.
      That said for $75k AUD Mazda should have added some adaptive damping. No idea why they didn't. Maybe the Japanese know why they engineered it this way. I don't think they spent time in Australia with it to tune the set up to our roads.
      It's a sick car for the money and a better proposition than a very basic X3 with a gutless 4 cylinder Turbo.

    Wow Thomas, You are a prefectionist. Your attention to little details like Window's opening sound..surprising me, also the narrow leg room in the second row always be a homework for Mazda's SUV line ups. For those, I agree with you. But in interior, we must admit Mazda done a very great job, making the X3 interior looks so ordinary. Another thing, when you accelerate full thorttle, The mazda engine's sound more hoarsely than X3. I think both cars are great. BMW luxury image still no compromise, but if you look for another perpectives like less expensive luxury and a driver oriented car, good performance, also more efficient gasoline, I think Mazda CX-60 is worthy. I like BMW, but their Double Kidney Grill is getting bigger along the time give a weirdo look and their interior design not change much in a couple of decades. I think they can make their interior look better than this.
    But anyway, thank you for your honest and elegent review.
    Note : Those pretty legs on the passanger side give an extra credit and beauty in this review.

    I would like to see the comparison with the Inline 6 Skyactiv X Engine 3L when it comes out next year.
    It might completely shift into Mazda's favour considering the less weight and a better linear acceleration/stopping -
    Hearing that they started replacing shocks for all CX-60 owners for free and putting these new shocks on the New CX-60 models.
    Would be nice to a updated video of the comparison by next year spring.
    For their 1st year CX-60 model - Pretty decent from Mazda - Hope to maybe get CX-60/CX-80 4 years down the line when Mazda polishes up their new SUV line up as Mazda price/performance/quality nothing beats it

    Taking into account the lower cost of maintenance, and resale value of the car the Mazda becomes a very tempting option. BMW on the other hand will have a steeper depreciation in the resale value comparatively. However, the badge of a BMW or any luxury manufacturer is something that many buyers would be hard to let go.

    Driving a Kia Sorento and being told by friends that nothing rivals the German experience, I’m on the brink. An important consideration however is price and quality. As an Australian, an easy decision for me. Here, Mazda has a better reputation for reliability than BMW and Mazda service costs are far less expensive. And the Mazda dealer/service network is wider. So with all that in mind plus the much cheaper initial purchase price I would take the Mazda without even bothering to test the BMW, despite the claimed minor superiority of the latter in some aspects.

  • @derbigpr500
    @derbigpr500 3 місяці тому +2

    Mazda nails the interiors which LOOK (that's the key word) really premium and even more expensive than premium cars, but they still have a lot of work to do in terms of how the interiors and the rest of the cars FEEL in order to match premium brands. For example I drove the Mazda 3 and Audi A3 side to side, and Mazda 3 was my favorite before test drives, just sitting in them both Mazda felt like the interior was nicer, more luxurious, nicer looking materials, etc. When I drove both, I realized Audi is on a different level, more solid feeling, better suspension, better sound isolation, less harshness and vibration in the cabin, smoother engine and gearbox, MUCH better performance despite both being 150hp petrols with manual gearboxes, and the interior in the Audi FEELS better. It looks more plasticky, but it's actually more solidly made, makes no noise (while Mazda did make an odd crackle over some bumps), every button has a satisfying click and sound to it, etc.
    And yea, the door closing sound on the Mazda was not as good as European non-premium cars like Skoda, let alone anywhere near the Audi.
    So for a price difference of like 29000 to 33000 euros, the A3 is definitely worth 4k more, as it feels like a significantly higher quality car. Mazda's appeal is on the surface level. As I said, they nail the interiors, which look premium definitely, but the rest of the car DEFINITELY ISN'T premium.

    I will probably take CX-60 3.3 diesel which is, as you said in previous tests, lighter almost 200 kg and handles better than plug-in hybrid. BMW is p better in some things, like door closing sound and especially seat side support, but for 17.000-20.000 euros you can buy another new car. Also, inline 6 is way better than BMWs 4 cylinder 2.0 diesel, in sound perspective, performance and they are comparable in fuel consumption which is realy interesting. I am writing this as I am in process of getting new vehicle and these two are in the top of my list, so I did test drive of both cars. The biggest difference is in the seat side support. I just don't know why Mazda did such "flat seat". Maybe @autogefuehl could ask some Mazda engineers about that at some presentation. I would love to here the answer...

    My impression is that the X3 30d 48V xDrive and the CX60 e-Skyactiv-d 254 AWD are very similar on paper powertrain wise (inline 6 vgt turbodiesel with 48v mild hybrid system, 8 speed torque converter automatic going to either rear or all wheels), with the important difference that the BMW has more peak torque and better acceleration while the Mazda has much better fuel economy

    CX60 is wonderful, i wonder if your test version is before the major transmission recalibration and the replacement suspension changes they made?

    After 3 years 60,000kms, the Mazda will still be like new with zero defects and problems while the X3 would have had multiple runs to the dealership for warranty repairs

    Such a good review thank you. I would love these to be based on cars of the same value. I can't see anyone that has the larger amount of money even test driving the Mazda. But a BMW fan with X1 money who actually needs a larger car might, or a least, would have to consider the mAzda.

    Great comperison, but... How does the 3.3 diesel stack up to Beemer diesel (whichever, 4 pot or 6 pot diesel). These PHEV is just completely wrong choice for both Beemer and Mazda. Who buys a car like this to drive around the town, the only place where PHEV makes sense? Also people who have money for a car like this (in western europe), usually have another small car for city, or just use cab/metro for comunting around bigger towns/cities. So I would really like a camperison between these two cars with diesel powertrains.

    I love Autogefühl…I have a 7 month old X3 M40i and the only car that could change my mind would be a VW Touareg R, which I can’t get in California.

    So, we've got this epic face-off between the two cars, like a gladiator match in the automotive arena. But when it comes to the little things - the door closing symphony and the noise chorus - it's like debating whether you prefer a jazz band or a rock concert in your trunk. And oh boy, that 20k price gap? That's the Grand Canyon of car budgeting! Picture yourself standing at the edge, shouting, "Show me the savings!" 🏞️💸 Now, when it comes to comfort, the BMW might as well have been designed by a grumpy medieval knight - heavy, cranky, and the infotainment system is like a puzzle from a haunted castle. Meanwhile, the Mazda's seats? They're like clouds on wheels, perfect for kings and queens embarking on their long-haul odyssey. For me of course 😊. Why I'm saying these things? Is because I have my own love story with my CX5 and a hate story with a particular Series 5! Mazda is like a romantic comedy starring you and your trusty steed, ready for adventure and happily ever afters! 🎬🚘😄

    Thanks for the review . I have had my Mazda cx 60 Gt model plug in for two weeks great car to drive and beautiful finish even with the luxury tax with apples to cars over $70000 in Australia I think it is value for money
