Mazda CX-60 2024 review: D50e GT | Long-term test of new BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV rival

  • The 2024 Mazda CX-60 is a critical new model for the Japanese brand in Australia, where it's hoping it can go tyre to tyre with premium Mid-size SUV segment heavyweights, including the well-established BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Needless to say, it has a very tall task ahead of it.
    That said, the CX-60 uses a similar formula to its rivals, with a new-for-Mazda rear-wheel-drive platform providing the basis for the model. These underpinnings also unlock a trio of new powertrain options, including petrol and diesel turbocharged inline six-cylinder engines, as well as a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid.
    In this expert long-term review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Richard Berry and his family of four spend three months living with the CX-60's diesel-powered D50e GT variant to find out just how well it measures up against its stiff competition. After all, it literally has to be a class above the popular - but mainstream - CX-5 in all areas.

    My guy the dial is amazing. I have been using it for years. Blind fold me and ask me to get to a menu and i can do it with the feel of the dial. Cant do that with a touchscreen. Your eyes have to see where your tapping. The dial is tactile its like using a tv remote. You dont look at your tv remote when you use it because you know exactly where the buttons are. Now if your tv remote was a touch screen youd always look at it to see what youre touching.

    Well. As someone who owns one of these, I have to disagree with you. The suspension is the only thing that I have the same opinion about. It could be much better. The dial-shift is fantastic and a great idea for safety reasons. My friend, touching a screen while we are driving is not the best thing to operate the systems (BMW was the first brand to use this method). The transmission is fine with my unit, so I'm very pleased with it.

    I own one for 4 months now, drove 11k km already, it is a good car. Not perfect, but perfect for me :) Suspension is a bit stiff, but I don't mind - it must be so for a reason. Transmission shifts well, the engine is amazing (main reason for my choice), I just love the simplicity of the interior (mine is all black) and the exterior design. I wouldn't change a thing and I appreciate Mazda for the work they put in this model.

      I got my cx60 2024 model (3.3L e-skyactiv G version) last week here in Dubai UAE. So far I’m extremely happy with the car. The transmission is so smooth, absolutely nothing abnormal noted so far. The car is very comfortable and the engine noise is just amazing! Face recognition and safety e features (lane assistance and dynamic cruze control) are some of the high technology features in this car in my view. I’m wondering the issues listed here doesn’t apply to my model (ps: mine is the mild hybrid version).

    As an owner of the Azami diesel I agree with the suspension and auto tailgate and although not mentioned facial recognition has its issues too. . I love the power feel size sound and luxury style of this Model. The suspension bounciness is my biggest issue and Mazda must address this and recall them. Not just address in future models. If my suspension is not addressed this is my show stopper and I will sell my Mazda and buy another brand. Watch this space.

    I can't disagree with you more about the rotary infotainment controller. I have a Kia Stinger that is only touchscreen and my wife has another Mazda with a similar controller. I love my Stinger but I hate using the touchscreen whilst on the move. It's dangerous and annoying.
    I'm actually super surprised that government legislation doesn't make this mandatory and illegal to be able to use touchscreen whilst driving. You can't use your phone but you're supposed to touch a screen whilst at speed, adjusting everything from radio volume to navigation to AC to heated seats and everything else.
    As far as the design, interior and exterior, you're bang on. For a brand new model, it looks like a bigger CX5. Absolutely generic looking not even differentiating it from their own models. Gosh, when Kia revised the same Stinger model, there were significant changes inside and out. Mazda just copied their old models.

    But the way its been implemented in the Mazda is to have the timing chain/belt at the rear of the engine instead of the front.

    As the owner of a top line Mazda cx-60 3.3 petrol I can assure you it's a terrible car, harsh ride, dangerous lane assist, broken technology, driver recognition broken, speed limit detection broken, steamed up windows occasionally, harsh ride, rattling boot lid, lane assist that will kill you if you are not careful, continuous interference in the driving experience by annoying warnings, bleeps and bells. I actually hate this car more than anything else I've ever driven and I've owned other Mazda's too.

      Can't say the same about the diesel, excellent vehicle, ridiculous fuel economy 800+ KM from one tank of fuel and thats highway driving around the burbs not freeway, granted lane assist is annoying but no worse than my previous CX5, upgraded suspension and transmission are much much better than the demonstrator I borrowed prior to purchase, the only really annoying thing is the driver monitoring which drives me nuts and cannot be permenantly switched off, speed limit detection works fine on mine.

    • @craigyjp
      @craigyjp 16 днів тому

      @@peterscrace3530 I cannot complain and did not complain about the fuel economy, it stated 690km on my last journey which is impressive for such a big petrol engine. I made a video showing the faulty speed indication, it is broken at 90km and 130km limits on my car which I encountered on my recent 7000km drive. The suspension seems to be settling down a little now, still the whole boot jumps up in the air on some bumps in the road. Maybe you are luckier than me with road quality, being in Ukraine we have quite poorly maintained roads, despite the war our government is doing it's best to fix them but the extreme temperature shifts don't help each year. When I drove through Poland, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France etc the roads are much higher quality and you don't notice the ride quality so much. Drivers recognition is turned off, it's never worked despite a dealer upgrade. My boot latch has the temporary tape fix until a new latch arrives. I tested the speed issues through multiple countries and it was consistently broken. My phone charger constant tells me it's not working or is ok. Driver distraction I could do without too.
