I picked one of these up a few months ago. I haven't gotten to do load development yet tho. If I may, I do gunsmith work as a hobby, you might know already but on a tube feed magazine, that's attached to the barrel, tgey are best tested single feed because if there is rounds in the magazine, the barrel harmonics change with each shot.
@@sprucehilloutdoors oh and if you need to drift the front sight, be careful. Because mine was extremely tight and wound up pulling the threads out of the barrel. So I suggest to anyone to remove it from the barrel before drifting it. They are 6-42 threads btw. I got new ones at ace hardware.
@@sprucehilloutdoors no problem, otherwise it's a good rifle from what I've seen. Mine shot really low so I had to replace the front sight with one much shorter, that's how I know.
Thanks for the test I also have the R95 I've got a box of the lever revolution 160 grain but I haven't used it yet I may not like it looking at your results!! The blue box 30-30 has been good to me also!
After shooting those three groups at 50 yds, my first thought was, why waste anymore ammo at 100? Good decision lol. I've had good groups with the 160gr in my Marlin 336XLR (24" barrel) than you're getting, but I just don't like the bullet. I get the same velocity with the 150gr. I've gotten good accuracy with the Federal Hammer Down ammo at 100yds. Right at 1". Deer MOA for me. 3 touching at 50yds. I have a 2x7,32 scope so at 100 I think it shoots pretty good. There's a real good channel that does ballistic testing on all ammo (Mason Outdoors) and you should check out his videos on the Federal Bonded soft point and the Hammer Down. I shoot the Hammer Down now.
@@easttexan2933 thanks for the comment and for watching the video. I have watched the videos from Mason Outdoors, he has some good ballistic gel tests. I also am using the Hammer Down based off of my testing.
Exellent video, i have the same rifle, try the 160 gr but didn't work, i buy today the last 7 box of core lockt 170 gr in my country, that work just fine for wild boar and axis deer. Hornady ammo use to be very strong but giveme problems of accuracy in several calibers, 22mag 243, 6.5x55 and 30-30, watch the residue left in the barrel they use some diferent gunpowder
I wish you would do 100yd testing. All your testing seems to be at 50. Was the bore cleaned before this test? I am not impressed with the accuracy at 50yds. At 100yds those groups are going to open up more, so it looks like the R95 has below-average accuracy. Now I have think about purchasing the R95, because I am not liking the groups I am seeing, but the Federal does OK I guess. I would have preferred to see 5-shot groups to determine if the R95 can keep shooting "tight" with the Federal.
@@vtecharrys.6981 thanks for the comment, I did do a 100 yard test with various ammo and several of them did well. The video is posted if you care to watch it. I do 50 yard test first and if they do well I go back to 100 yards and shoot again. As you said at 50 yards this was not good and would have been twice this at 100 yards.
@@sprucehilloutdoors Cool thank you. I wasn't aware of a 100yd video. I am guessing you have the 20" R95 which is the barrel length I am looking at, but in stainless. I have a Rossi 92 in stainless and it still looks like new after 11 years without much cleaning on the outside except a quick wipe down like once a year. With these new high prices we are paying today for lever guns one would expect to get decent accuracy, but I think the 30-30 caliber itself is inherently limited in that dept. although my old Marlin 336 JM was almost a tack driver at 100yds even with open sights... but I have shot friends' newer (Remi) 336 that were not as accurate as the old JM 336's, so I am pretty sure a lot of it has to do with the quality of the barrel and how it's crowned.
Thank you so much for posting your test !
