Your advice is sound and your delivery is perfect. Don't change what you do, there's a ton of us out here that appreciate your time end efforts sincerely. Thank you!
I really appreciate videos like this so I hope you won't take my comments the wrong way. This situation is exactly why I do not let anyone change my fluids. I do it myself and have done so for 60 years. I am not one to ignore grinding noises and I always pay attention to the starter since it usually gives early warning signs when it or the battery needs to be replaced. This situation has obviously been going on for a long time. Longer than the oil change interval. You didn't say if the dealership does regular service on this bike or if the customer does it. Whoever changed the oil in this Sportster and didn't look at the drain plug needs to have his wrenches taken away fro him.
Absolutely. Anyone who rides, I don't care, from a Harley to a Honda, should be able to do their own maintenance on the bike. I've always done mine for nearly 60 years too. Also on my cars.
Doc, thank you again. Hey Harley-Davidson, hire Doc to teach a class or two at corporate on what it means to represent a brand and help customers. Doc is the best!
I know that you hate to be the bearer of bad news to the customer BUT just common since (and a good set of ears) would or should suggest that something is wrong with the bike. Keep up the great work and videos!!!!
Doc. I had almost had the same thing happen to my Roadking , but I didn’t here any noise . When I was changing all my oiles the oil in my primary had a silver tint to it but the plug didn’t have a lot of metal on it , so I changed the oil and put another 100 miles on it and looked again and it was silver . So I got my manual out and pulled the primary all apart and found the main clutch basket bearing had started to fail because the race on the shaft slips . If I didn’t catch that early in stead of $75 it would have cost way more . Pay attention to what your bike is telling you people ……..
I've been through 3 Dynas, 3 Softails, 3 Touring models and just picked up my second Sportster 1200. This Evo motor will last forever if treated right. Prove me wrong!
Well rub a little salt in my wound Doc. You see, my '85 big twin Evo started this very thing late last summer. Slow turning over, starter clutch letting go and free-wheeling, the grind occasionally. Did I park it immediately and address whatever the issue(s) are? No. I'll deal with it during the off-season. Tore up my shoulder in November and that ended my riding season. Had surgery in December, and now about to return to work and now I'm gonna tear into it and find out what's up and prolly pay some stupid tax of my own. I guess like Don Smith says, I deserve a big fat bill for whatever parts I need.
If you can find the parts in the first place , just rebuilt with a friend 94/95 dyna super glide, mots of my parts are no longer made bye the factory, I have had to source quite few non factory parts. Even had to get 2 parts engineered here in Tassie. You have been a great help.

Doc, I'm in a similar situation w/ my 92 sporty 883. I've been told it is a shifter pawl problem. I'll be bringing it home on a trailer rather than starting and riding it home so I can go into it.
You were supposed to put the round uneven black washer in between the two pieces for the passenger floorboards. That's what makes them stay up and not loose either. Took me a minute to figure it out cause no I structions. You think for $240 they could include instructions
I got an 03 HD xl883r with a bit of a hard shift with 1st & 2nd ..thinking it's the shifter paw, not sure.. Can't afford to take it in right now, hopefully fine for now..

We appreciate you watching Doc Videos. My opinion if you have been using higher gears too soon on a 2014 with only 7K miles you might want to have a trusted Harley Tech inspect first your rear belt adjustment then all components inside your primary. Using higher gears at too low of MPH & RPM puts added stress on the primary components. I agree the motor sounds great loping along at a slow cruise….Doc

I'm getting a high pitched chirping noise from the compensator area on a 2012 electra glide cvo? Everything I've read on the comp is more of a rattle/ clunk noise. Chain tension does not seem off. Thoughts?

So with my 2009 XL1200C I tried starting my bike when it died by running with it and popping the clutch in gear. I just ended up breaking something which I investigated to be the snap ring and retaining ring for the clutch pressure plate. The spring and clutch discs fell freely after pulling the cover off. I found at least one tooth on the part of the clutch that holds that to be chipped with scoring inside that general area. The pieces of the clip were large and mangled in the bottom of the cover. I wondered why I couldn’t get a proper clutch lever adjustment or why it wouldn’t change gears even with a new cable. And I still haven’t addressed why the bike died in the first place. No money to get a new starter so I’ve superglued the plastic pieces I could find and will try to silicone it in place when on the bike.
I guess my question is if I use the bike until I can replace the damaged parts in the clutch basket and if oil in that starter button electrical plug (the one on the bottom of the starter housing)would cause the starter to not work?
Multiple things going on here. There has to be a reason the clutch clip came out. Can’t just get a new clip and ride off. Well maybe you can, I could not, knowing the clip could come out again right when I need it going through an intersection. If oil is coming out the connection, you maybe did not replace the thin o-ring in the starter clutch assembly. Oil can be a conductor and ground out the power coming to the starter.
