True story. This happened this past Monday. A customer came up to my seafood counter. She had on this dress that was kinda flowing in the air and I said "You make me think of a line from a song." She said what song and said year of the cat. She had never heard of it and asked what line was it and I said " She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like the water running in the rain." She said "Oh my God that's so beautiful! Then I just recited the entire first lyrics and she asked me the name of the song again and who sung it. She immediately goggled it and started listening to it. She loved it and thanked me for telling her about it. Im 65 she was probably 32-34. I said no problem and said you missed alot of great music!

This song makes me want to put a headphone and walk through the park on a rainy day, aimlessly... One of the best songs ever written. Thanks, Al Stewart. From Brazil.
This, and 'Baker Street' by Gerry Rafferty define a certain excellence in atmosphere and a certain sense of a snapshot of time during the mid to late 1970s.
Yeah it's weird that songs do that. But everyone's "atmosphere" that they relate to the song must be different, yet somehow somewhat the same, too. I wonder if more recent eras, people will look back on with less yearning and nostalgia because so much of it has been recorded because of the internet & cell phones? The 70s, 80s and 90s have a kind of veiled nostalgia because we didn't have as many ways of preserving events & moments so well...we have to rely on our own memories. What do you think?
They make me think of a rainy 🌙 night. Where the lights from the headlights and traffic signals, reflect their warm street colors into the streets, on a summer night. 🌟 🐅
Al Stewart composed a beautiful arrangement of instrumentals piano, solo guitar and saxophone, wonderfully crafted musicians, even in 2022 this song is a standout.

God... they just don't do it like that anymore. Music now is so... empty, but that song is just, well... full. There's so much there and it all comes together to make one of my most treasured musical memories.

I've loved this song since it came out around 1976. Wonderful, unforgettable teenage years of 14-15 years old. It seems like every time this beautiful song played, whether on the home stereo 8-track or on the car radio, it was a very happy moment never to forget. One was in 1976, my father, my best friend, and me went shopping for a new car for our family. Just remembering all of beautiful cars way back then almost 50 years ago. Test driving fabulous Oldsmobiles, Lincolns, Buicks, Cadillacs, and Mercurys. We ended up buying a 1976 Mercury Marquis Brougham. Beautiful automobile. Everytime a see a picture of one, I get misty eyed, play this song, and think of my late father and mother.😢

I'm 7 years old sitting the back of my Dad's white station wagon and I hear this song constantly on the radio. Something about it, even as a kid, something about the lyrics. Who is this mysterious woman he sings of and in what part of the world does this song take place in? These are questions I had at 7 and I have now at 54. Everything about this song is perfect, the lyrical poetry, the musicianship, the feeling that I'm going on an adventure when I listen to this song. It is just such a cool, cool, song.
Pivot man Farming, where is your home base ? You got to have good music when you're traveling I-70 through Colorado. It's not nearly as scenic as people would expect it to be.
Every lyric is poetry, the music ethereal. One of my favorite songs. "You know sometime you're bound to leave her, but for now you're going to stay, in the year of the cat."
One of the best songs EVER to hit the airwaves in the 70s..my God what I would not give to return to that time..to see you again my love, listen to the 🎷 as you closed your eyes, gently biting your bottom lip, swaying back and forth..i will see you again my love..i just know it .🙏🕊️❤️🌈❤
This song was a snapshot in time when I was leaving an abusive group home the day this song came out walking to my own apartment 45 years ago, now 45 years later I hear it before going into surgery as I drift off to sleep in the surgery unit playing in the background, it is such a symbolic song and it's been with me for so many years, and it truly is the epitome when they say that music touches feelings that words cannot!
@Mark Schultz Imagine having to learn all that just to like or dislike a song. The worst people on earth are those that think music is objective rather than subjective. (And yes, worse than Hitler unless Hitler was a music snob too).
What a beautiful piece of Art! The piano harmonies, the sweeping orchestral violins, the guitar & sax solos ... and the cherry on top ... Al Stewart!!!
Amazing performance--my favourite--every instrument is stunning. The piano is so distinct and gorgeous; the electric guitars are on point. All the instruments have the focus time and meld together. The lyrics and voice of Al Stewart bring everything together. Glorious 70s sound.
When I was an undergrad in geology (way back in the 1970s), Al Stewart stood out as one of the more memorable talents of that decade. During our six-week summer field camp in the Big Bend of Texas and in the high mountains of New Mexico, we heard Stewart's songs every evening, after a long day in the field. I remember listening to Stewart as I prepared for the evening exercises while I relaxed with a very cold beer.
Anyone involved in the production of a melodic masterpiece like this deserves the utmost respect and not a little envy. Oh to have been a part of it... Wonderful memories come flooding back every time I hear it.

"You know sometime you're bound to leave her, but for now you're going to stay, in the year of the cat."
Agree!!!
This is one of those classics that transcends time and emotion....
I was 8 when this song came out and felt this was adult music and so desperately wanted to connect and many decades later I did.
Ahead of its time what a gem
Boy, that saxophone just OWNS the room.
Now, This was and still is GOOD MUSIC
Fabulous....from an era where music had real soul and passion (from an old man)
You said it.
🗣 In my opinion : The most *Beautiful* light song from 70's
Beautiful people playing beautiful music:)
this song haunts me with the most wonderful memories of the time.
Great song writing, great performances by all those playing, you just don't see that much talent in one place and one song anymore.
Man I would of loved to live during these times. 2000 baby listening to a golden gem
An old soul, we feel you
One of the best songs EVER to hit the airwaves in the 70s..my God what I would not give to return to that time..to see you again my love, listen to the 🎷 as you closed your eyes, gently biting your bottom lip, swaying back and forth..i will see you again my love..i just know it .🙏🕊️❤️🌈❤
This song was a snapshot in time when I was leaving an abusive group home the day this song came out walking to my own apartment 45 years ago, now 45 years later I hear it before going into surgery as I drift off to sleep in the surgery unit playing in the background, it is such a symbolic song and it's been with me for so many years, and it truly is the epitome when they say that music touches feelings that words cannot!
Greatest song ever, every time I hear it, it goes back to my joyful years of the 70's when I was just a kid in Florida.
@Mark Schultz No but this song is absolutely great, unless of course you disagree.
im in uk, i thought this awesome
Mark Schultz don’t listen to this song, dumbass.
@Mark Schultz Imagine having to learn all that just to like or dislike a song. The worst people on earth are those that think music is objective rather than subjective. (And yes, worse than Hitler unless Hitler was a music snob too).
@Mark Schultz I didn't say Hitlerian, I said worse than Hitlerian.
Yes😊 My Favorite Song..
Um grande clássico🎤🎹 não me canso de ouvir.Belissimo🌹🌺
Highly underrated song of the 70’s by a highly underrated artist.
Did not appreciate this song during my teen years, but now I definitely do! ♥️♥️
Underrated?? By who? Its one of most popular songs of that era lol
I was so fortunate to see Al Stewart in concert in Fresno, CA. And then after the show I sat and talked to him. He was so charming.
wow🐈 lucky you !
Amazing song. The world never will get singers, songs, poets, as we had in 80's. The best years of this world.
Thank Christ.....we have THIS !!
What a beautiful piece of Art! The piano harmonies, the sweeping orchestral violins, the guitar & sax solos ... and the cherry on top ... Al Stewart!!!
Oh my gosh, yes! It's got all the instrumentation. And the lyrics are just haunting.
Saw him perform live about three years ago. Just him and his guitar. Amazing 💛
Michelle, where was? What a privilege!
City Winery, NYC. Amazing.
Lucky you are!
Who's still listening to this in August 2020 ?
I'm still listening to this now in 2020 and beyond til god takes me home .
December 2020. One of the greatest songs of all time. Brings back the memories of my teen years 70's and 80's.
January 22,2021.
Febrero 2021 y aún la disfruto al máximo.

Perfect song. Musically and lyrically mesh into magic ❤️
what a great singer and amazing band. 1970s greatest musical decade.
Beautiful song have always loved it and time passages 2 years old when it came thanks Al
Anyone involved in the production of a melodic masterpiece like this deserves the utmost respect and not a little envy. Oh to have been a part of it... Wonderful memories come flooding back every time I hear it.
