Love this masterpiece. I was 15 in 1975. Just started dating the most beautiful 14 year old girl on the planet. Heard this song as I rode my bicycle back from her house every night. I'm 64 now. She's 63. Married forever. She's still the most beautiful girl on the planet and we still listen to this song together and it takes us back to the summer of '75.❤

Because of music like this, I just want one more week in the 1970’s. As a teenager then, that was absolutely my happiest time in my life, before pain and regrets took over. This song is so hypnotic and classically played, I used to play it over and over, as it put me in a trance. I miss the 1970’s, and so may we have peace from God my dear friends and learn to love each other like brothers and sisters and enjoy music like this forever.

@@musiclover5023 wow a shared moment in time across the decades. I think what made me sit up (literally) was how new and out of step it was. Back then it was all about volume ( Slade, Roxy Music, Suzy Quattro plus any number of glam rock and metal bands) then this layered, harmonious almost ethereal piece came along. Anyway it’s great we can access this beautiful music so easily (keeping me sane in Lockdown - just!) .Thanks for touching base
I was 17 yrs old in 1975 and getting ready to graduate from high school. This song has beautiful memories of carefree days. I am 65 now and preparing to retire and still listening to this song. We had the best music.....
Same here, i was in Knebworth Park in the UK in 1976 when 10cc played there, i was working for Artistes Services on security & i can remember exactly where i was when 10cc started playing this song. Everytime i walk past the same spot it takes me back to the summer of 1976, Happy days!!. And 10cc were much better than the Rolling Stones who played later in the day!
I’m “only” 60…I clearly remember being totally captivated by the atmospheric sound of this song, and even if I couldn’t fully grasp the lyrics, LOL. My being about 13 and rather slow on the uptake hardly negates the fact that this song is iconic…

I was there, and I know what you mean. I was going out with my high school sweetheart. I was planning ahead and heading off to college. My high school sweetheart headed out west. Loved that girl and that timeframe. Music like this brings the old memories back. Fast forward, met another girl who became my wife, mother of my children. We've been together 43 years now, have two grownup kids and 4 grandchildren. I wouldn't change a thing, but music from this timeframe, and this song very much included, brings back a lot of fond memories. I wish my grandkids can experience the same similar joys that I got to. Life is so much different now.
Never thought I would miss 1975, but damn I do and would go back if I could. Life was simpler back then and much more innocent. This song is the tip of the iceberg as to why this time was wonderful.
58 years on this planet. This is one of the songs from my youth that stirs up those exquisitely painful memories of a different time. New Zealand was a much better, safer place back then.
I remember this song way back when, I was seeing Darlene off and on for years, and kept telling myself that"I'm not in love" But I truly was, I have been married to Darlene now for 21+ years.
3:48 I use to stay upstairs in my room and across the street was a friends house and the boy I liked would go to his home. I waited a long time for him But my parents sold our home and I never saw him again. Yes this song makes me remember waiting a long time.
@@pattyoconnell1950s When I was six and in first grade, there was a boy in my classroom who was so different from the other kids. I was a little girl, but I felt this little boy's spirit. One day, he was no longer in our classroom. He and his family moved from Chicago to the suburbs in the fall of 1973. I felt that he would have been the only one who I could relate to, and I was right. I never saw him again, but met some of his neighbors in a restaurant who told me that he was still a very kind, quiet, humble person who married a very good woman. I felt that at that point, I would be eaten by savages...and I was.
I was 13 too. My family moved house early that year and my sister and I used to run to my bedroom when we saw out neighbour coming home. We would listen at my bedroom wall to hear what record she bought. She always played them over and over on her Ferguson portable record player and we could hear the music through the wall. She was into hte same songs as my sister and I, motown, rhythm & blues, Northern Soul, Soul etc. Al lthe top songs of the 1970 played in our neighbours bedroom on a weekend.
Just lost my wife and this song is all about her, the love of my life. She waited for me and we stayed together for 42,yrs of marriage. God I miss her terribly and it’s only been 4 months. The song is a killer emotionally. I can picture her right now at prom.
you're right to cling to the beautiful memories of her. She was a gift from God as, so is this fantastic song. Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit has filled a similar void in my life and given me the power to go one. God bless.

Ah 1975. Just hit my teenage years. The feathered hair, the bell bottoms, hanging out with my friends, all the great music. Really makes me want to go back. Anyone want to come with?
Plenty of people write songs like this even in 2023. But none of them get to be recorded and become global hits because the world doesn't work that way anymore.
"I'm Not In Love" by 10cc, released in 1975, is a classic rock ballad that stands out for its innovative production, lush arrangements, and the unique story behind its creation. The song was written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, and its recording process was nothing short of groundbreaking. The story begins with Stewart's exploration of a new piece of recording equipment, the Ericsson Vocoder, which allowed him to manipulate and blend sounds in innovative ways. During a recording session, Stewart began experimenting with the device, creating a sonic landscape by layering vocal harmonies and other sounds. The band soon realized they had stumbled upon something special and decided to build a song around these experimental recordings. The distinctive vocal sound that permeates "I'm Not In Love" was achieved by recording the voices of Stewart, Gouldman, and other band members singing a multitude of notes. Each singer was asked to sustain a single note for as long as possible, resulting in a vast collection of vocal tones. These recordings were then mixed and manipulated using the Ericsson Vocoder, creating the ethereal and choir-like vocal texture that became a defining element of the song. Lyrically, "I'm Not In Love" is a complex exploration of love and denial. The protagonist of the song insists that they are not in love, yet the repeated refrain of the title suggests a tension between the denial and the underlying emotions. The lyrics capture the ambivalence and vulnerability inherent in matters of the heart, making the song relatable to a wide audience. The recording process of "I'm Not In Love" was painstaking and meticulous. The band utilized a unique technique of creating a sonic mural, layering tracks upon tracks to achieve a rich and immersive sound. The result was a groundbreaking piece of work that defied conventional expectations of what a pop song could be. Upon its release, "I'm Not In Love" became a massive hit, reaching the top of the charts in multiple countries. Its success was not only due to the captivating production but also the emotional resonance of the song. The innovative use of vocal techniques and production methods in "I'm Not In Love" set it apart as a trailblazer in the world of pop music, influencing subsequent generations of musicians and producers. "I'm Not In Love" remains a timeless classic, celebrated for its artistry, innovation, and ability to capture the complexities of human emotions. The song's enduring popularity is a testament to its status as a groundbreaking piece of musical history.
Well said as it was a masterpieces n still Is I wish I can go back to this day I was so young. 49 yrs ago my goodness feels like if it was yesterday when I was just youngster... amazing very beautiful song even though it was sad.
The reason this song is so ‘70’s is because it represents a youthful time for so many of us when protocols were different then. The narrator is clearly in love /lust with a girl he’s calling on the phone but won’t admit it and doesn’t want her to know his true feelings for her. Because it wasn’t cool back then to admit you had a crush and liked someone. Unlike it is today for youth who profess rheir love interests at the drop of a hat. It was more romantic back then even though it’s more romanticized today. People were much more subtle back then. There was a complete different approach to dating and liking someone from afar. Guys were more humble and more chill than they are today. It’s just completely different and hard to explain if you were not there. But this song does a good job of it with its lyrics.

What a unique love song. So rich with dreamy music and vocals. The strong denial of being in love of course means he is in love ...he is just wrestling with coming to grips with that reality. Can totally relate. Ahhh....to be a teenager again.
@Larry DeLeau I always heard that heart beat too! The song is beautiful, music like that is so good for the world but too many people now don't understand that.
Those of us who were teenagers in the 70’s were so fortunate to experience the music, I was 16 when this came out and this song still sounds so fresh to this day, just like Lowdown by Boz Skaggs also💕

There is a cool story about how, while they were recording, thinking about vocal fills, the studio secretary popped her head in to announce a phone call or something trite, and they realized they found the voice for “Big boys don’t cry”… What a great song, what a great time to have grown up. As I get ready to pull up stakes here on earth, I’m so grateful to have grown up during this era.
The story behind this song is great! The world and music has changed so much since the time of this tune! It takes me back to a better time! Never heard that “pulling up stakes” analogy before! 😅 prob won’t be too long till I gotta check out, too! Stay cool, friend!
Firstly, I love your moniker! Mr Fife happened to be my favorite character on Andy Griffith - he was the best and made me laugh hysterically every episode. 🤣 His antics were over the top; he was hilarious. Secondly, the story about who did the fill for the line "Big boys don't cry" is interesting. I'd never heard that. Thirdly, the 70s were indeed a magnificent time to grow up... I had just entered University and this song was one of my favorites at the time. I played the album so much I'm surprised I didn't wear it completely out. 😅 And lastly, your analogy regarding the length of our lives and "pulling up stakes" soon is somehow comforting to me. It's a beautiful way to visualize a sometimes difficult concept to grapple with. I like your style - we'll simply have to find another place to set up our tents when we're done camping here on earth. Surely the infinite has millions of places for us each and all to find the perfect spot in paradise to rest. Bless you for sharing such a beautiful image. It comforts me in this my sixth+ decade. 🥰💞🏕🌕🪐⭐️ Best wishes, Bhörn
And lucky you. Sounds like you didn't have an alcoholic nut Dad like me. I agree. Beautifully done. Got me through. Dream Weaver. Blinded by the light.
This is one of those songs I can play over and over and over and never get tired of it. It keeps me so engrossed in the music and lyrics, those 6 minutes go by too fast.
The vocals, synthesizer effect, and lyrics are beautiful and melancholy. When this song came out I had just broken up with my first love. 27 years later we found each other again. So this song is profound for me.
There is no synthesizer. They recorded tracks of themselves doing the "ahhhhhhhh" combined them and then added the same track over and over until they had the equivalent of 700 +/- copies of themselves. They let the tracks be just a bit out of sinc while adding them so that it sounds like an enormous choir. There is a documentary about the making of this great song.
@@Brian-uy2tj Yeah that's a great doc! I had always wondered why the background "ahhhhs" were so lush and could go on without a break, like a keyboard. The vocals were on numerous tracks that they would manually slide in and out while mixing the song making "chords" in essence. Beautiful effect.
@@dcool2u2 Thank you, one of the problems that they had that was pointed out was that all four were talented and accomplished song writers. It was in danger of being a case of too many cooks spoil the broth.... scenario, but, they nailed it. It is one of the most beautiful, if melancholy, songs of all time.
@@Brian-uy2tj Yeah I agree! I love this song. I went to this video to reference it because I'm learning it on my keyboard for a solo thing I do. I'm trying to get as close as I can to sounding somewhat like the song with just me lol So I first started with the drum patch that I use off of the keyboard (at a pretty low volume). Then I play the chords with the concert piano sound. But what gives it the fire is I layered it with a "voice/ahhhhs" effect. It mimics the record voices pretty closely. Sounds pretty good. Can't wait to do it on my next gig. I don't hear anybody around where I live really covering it. 😊🎤🎹🎼🎵🎶🎵
Me too! I was in 5th grade 1975. But would never think of skipping in 5th grade. Now high school was a different story. Always loved to mellow out to this song.
I'm going through this right now with my ex girlfriend. With the coronavirus coming back in full swing and difficult finances for others I told her she could move in on one condition. She has to listen to this song first. Oh yeah their is one other thing. Stay the f*** out of my business! I hope I don't regret this.
@@Screenwriting That required many hours of recording and manual editing, sometimes with scissors, all analog , no digital pitch correction. Few are willing to do that much work these days.
@@melvinbrown1347 Not saying there were no effects, nor was the engineering particularly unique, Zappa did this a lot. I’m saying that the effects were all analog and very, very painstakingly manually edited. The melotron-like background vocals were recorded over many hours and mixed over many more. Few would bother to take that kind of time today. Like firing up a steam locomotive.
I will never get over this song. Found it when I was in middle school, listened to it every single day and never got tired of it. Such a masterpiece. xx

My God we had no idea what was to become of this world... none of us had anything fancy yet everyone seemed happy and genuine. I was 10 when this song came out but it truly feels like it was just yesterday.
So true. It was a simple life and world. This song brings me back to being 18 and in love. Immediate joyful memories. Our world is radically different now.
Funny how a song can snatch you out of your current situation and the world as you know it and put you in a completely different time and situation and remind you of someone that maybe you always loved the most!
Verdade! Eu era adolescente... Meu primeiro amor era platônico! Mesmo assim, nunca o esqueci. Passaram-se 42 anos, ele ficou viúvo e me procurou. Hoje estamos juntos e casados. Toda vez que ouço a música volto ao passado e amo cada vez mais.❤️
I was 10 years old in 1975. It seemed there was always a radio on everywhere you went back then. You learned these amazing songs without even realizing it. This song resonates so deeply in me as if it’s always been there.
I was 11, and didn't know what love was, but knew how moving this song was...and is. There is an amazing documentary from the band on the making...and the girl who whispered "Be quiet, big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry,..." was the producers secretary.
Yes,amazing where the time has gone,I was 13 in 1975 when I first heard this song I was so captivated by how atmospheric it sounded, and still love it today.
This song got an emmy for its technical merit. If you knew what they did with analog methods as compared to today's digital methods, it would blow your mind. It took nearly 4 months (if memory serves) to mix this one song, today, we could do it in a few hours on a computer. And its way cool......
I'm 61 years old (i.e., from the analog/cassette/8-track era). I definitely have a great appreciation for incredible compositions/productions such as "I'm Not in Love" and others from that era (e.g., Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."). Given the technical limitations back in the day, let's just say that the creative people always had to "try a little harder."
The greatest hit of the summer 1975...i worked on a radio station and every hour this song was in the call of the public. The voices were mixed so perfectly like a gang of angels...
This is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. It's inconceivable that anyone could or would even attempt to equal it today.
it is one of those songs you automatically remember what life was like back then, the people you use to hang out with, good times and bad. Love this song forever

Hi Gerard, it was the same in Birmingham , except I was listening to this song on the school playing fields, lol

I was 17 in 1975, one of the best songs from that year. I'll be 65 soon, I still remember all the words. The 70's had some of the greatest music.
Yo tambien cumplire 65 años. Y me sigue gustando esta melodia. Hermosa😍♥️

I was born in 2004 and somehow this song really appeals to me. I don't know what I just really like this song.
You said a mouthful there ! ☮️
If I were back in 1975, I’d have a huge afro and platform shoes.

One of the few songs that invokes a sense of timelessness.
Yep, it transcends the eras. Fashion is temporary; class is permanent.

There is a cool story about how, while they were recording, thinking about vocal fills, the studio secretary popped her head in to announce a phone call or something trite, and they realized they found the voice for “Big boys don’t cry”…
What a great song, what a great time to have grown up. As I get ready to pull up stakes here on earth, I’m so grateful to have grown up during this era.

The vocals, synthesizer effect, and lyrics are beautiful and melancholy. When this song came out I had just broken up with my first love. 27 years later we found each other again. So this song is profound for me.
Wow ! That is awesome !
I'm trying to get as close as I can to sounding somewhat like the song with just me lol
So I first started with the drum patch that I use off of the keyboard (at a pretty low volume).

@@Screenwriting That required many hours of recording and manual editing, sometimes with scissors, all analog , no digital pitch correction. Few are willing to do that much work these days.
@@bobconnor1210that's not true , I have heard plenty of low fi bands ,and punk rock bands and post often recorded with no effects

100 years in the future this song will still jam. Timeless classic !!!
Funny how a song can snatch you out of your current situation and the world as you know it and put you in a completely different time and situation and remind you of someone that maybe you always loved the most!
exactly
The magic of 🎵
Verdade! Eu era adolescente... Meu primeiro amor era platônico! Mesmo assim, nunca o esqueci. Passaram-se 42 anos, ele ficou viúvo e me procurou. Hoje estamos juntos e casados. Toda vez que ouço a música volto ao passado e amo cada vez mais.❤️
Exactly! Wish I knew then what I know now…. 😞
I'm stuck in the 70's & 80's. A simpler time for me. Calming music
I was 10 years old in 1975. It seemed there was always a radio on everywhere you went back then. You learned these amazing songs without even realizing it. This song resonates so deeply in me as if it’s always been there.
Amen
I too was 10 years old
I was 15 years old and yah this was music was music. Not junk of today.
Me too.
I was 11, and didn't know what love was, but knew how moving this song was...and is. There is an amazing documentary from the band on the making...and the girl who whispered "Be quiet, big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry,..." was the producers secretary.
1975 was the happiest time of my life and this song made it happen.
2024 anyone?
Can you imagine this song is almost 50 years old❤❤
hope you going well buddy, God Bless
Yes,amazing where the time has gone,I was 13 in 1975 when I first heard this song I was so captivated by how atmospheric it sounded, and still love it today.
Yep I was 7 when this came out...I know every word...
I'm an old soul
Dios mío, que historia más bella.
Ese tipo de amores ya casi no existe😢
Music from heaven.
This song got an emmy for its technical merit. If you knew what they did with analog methods as compared to today's digital methods, it would blow your mind. It took nearly 4 months (if memory serves) to mix this one song, today, we could do it in a few hours on a computer. And its way cool......
I was sure that song was made in 90s and that it's Sting performing it... 😂
There is no music today as beautiful as this
I can"t imagine. Nothing like today. All digatil.
This vocalist (Eric Stewart) and Sting sound completely different. He sounds more like Paul McCartney.
The greatest hit of the summer 1975...i worked on a radio station and every hour this song was in the call of the public. The voices were mixed so perfectly like a gang of angels...
Takes me back to that summer and I like it❤
Seems to be about gay love
@@patriciadarienzo600 Thanks for the information. Good day !
This is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. It's inconceivable that anyone could or would even attempt to equal it today.
it is one of those songs you automatically remember what life was like back then, the people you use to hang out with, good times and bad. Love this song forever
