I actually don't mind when people ask me about my perfume in a respectful way. I recognize that most people ask because they like the perfume (i.e. it's a compliment) and/or would like to research/buy it too. I also don't view it as such a private matter, unlike e.g. my tattoos.

This is so interesting... Here in Brazil we have a much more open and warmer culture, if someone asks about your perfume, it's seen as compliment, it's a way of the person who is asking to say you have good taste and choose well, people even smile when you ask and then proceed to respond proudly. The people that don't want to disclose are perceived as rude or entitled.

Hello, I am a perfume lover and, to be honest, I do not agree with some things you said. I love your channel and your videos, I think you are beautiful and smart. To me, one of the greatest compliments is when somebody asks me what perfume I wear. I always reply honestly and it gives me great pleasure to share that information. Also, I like to wear many many many fragrances, I wear them to my heart desire, of course, I am mindful of social etiquette and I try not to be invasive with my perfumes. I don't believe in signature scents, there are so many beautiful scents out there, I could never limit myself to just one or two. Hi fellow perfume lover! I agree, the perfume world is so fascinating, so many interesting scents to explore! I therefore also like wearing multiple scents depending on my mood, period of year, etc.and usually disclose them to people asking. Personally I find it very boring wearing only one scent (and Jamila, if you don't smell your perfume on you, it does not mean you found your scent, it means your nose is used to it and people around might actually be suffocating), but everyone is different and I understand when wearing a "signature" scent, one might prefer keeping it a secret, as it's very intimate indeed.

Instead, if you feel the need to share something, you can always say its a custom blend scent, as there are perfumeries where you can have personal blends created for you.

For example, I wore the same scent for 9 year while in a relationship. When that relationship ended I felt the need to find a new signature scent. When I smell that perfume now, I love that it brings me back to that era of my life. Do you sometimes associate perfumes/scents to different memories in your life? I am curious to know. ☺️

I don’t consider perfume to be too intimate to discuss, and I’m a private person. You apply scent to your body, but it creates a scent cloud around you that those in your immediate vicinity can detect; it takes up social space and is therefore a fine subject for polite conversation. This is like playing music aloud in public and then taking umbrage if someone asks the name of the song. And unless you’re a connoisseur of niche perfumery or a wearer of bespoke fragrance, your “signature scent” is probably sold at most perfume counters and isn’t so unique. Treating your Chanel or MFK otherwise strikes me as more pretentious than refined. Several of the other tips are practical, though.

    • @ooooo000ooooo
      @ooooo000ooooo 3 роки тому +82

This exactly. It’s not like a hidden tattoo where other people don’t have to know about it. In applying perfume, you’re doing so with the knowledge that other people’s senses can come into contact with you and your scent. How it is too personal to be curious about it but not too personal to expose your scent to other people?

That’s the issue, you never know how people will react with that info. If you do not know the person very well, it could be broadcast all over social media, or literally blow up in your face as in your case, to the point where the joy of the fragrance was ruined for you. An alternative, tell the person its been discontinued, or that its a custom blend. You could offer a key ingredient in the make up of the fragrance to steer them toward their search and away from their scrutiny.

I love that your dad loved the smell on you and that’s how you choose your signature fragrance. I have been in search for a signature perfume, this video helped a lot. I don’t mind if someone asks me what perfume am I wearing, I guess because I’ve ask people all the time. I didn’t realize it wasn’t good etiquette to do so. I’ll be more mindful about that. Ultimately like you said it doesn’t matter what they are wearing because it won’t smell the same on me.

I'm on the fence about being asked about my perfume. On the one hand it's a compliment: you know for sure that the fragrance you're wearing works well with your body chemistry, and if it becomes positively associated with you through consistent wear, that's wonderful. On the other it has bothered me before when family asks me what I wear and then decides to gift it to someone else. What your own fragrance is is so personal that it bothers me to think that people think a perfume is one size fits all and gift others perfume without prior knowledge about whether or not they like the line it comes from or whether they've worn it before, etc.
I really like the tissue trick you mentioned. My husband really likes one scent in particular that I wear, so I've just hidden a tissue with a few sprays of it on his WFH desk while he's on-site today lol And in regards to perfume on clothing, I don't generally think that works well, but I do sometimes find it nice to put a few sprays on my scarves in the wintertime.
I have a question. Is there a polite way to bring up someone else's lack of etiquette? My husband could use a little help with his table manners, and I don't know how to bring up my discomfort without sounding like a rude nag. How does one politely encourage or suggest the improvement of these soft skills?

It’s a bit late to comment on this video, but I just want to say I really appreciate & agree with your last tip - do not let others influence you when it comes to choosing your perfume. I did that mistake - i searched for what’s the best perfume for women, the most complimented perfume, etc videos on youtube and I bought them instantly because a lot of people love it. Turned out the perfume that most people love, is not my type, I thought I’d love it but I don’t. It’s a waste of money, and I should have take my own time to actually try smell the perfume first and decide.

I’ve never come across anyone who wasn’t quite enthusiastic to tell me what they were wearing and I’ve been asked many times what I was wearing and find it a compliment. I like to share the info not keep it to myself, that really seems quite strange to me . So this video really did amaze me that anyone is mysterious about it but to each their own, I can respect that too.

Thank you for finally demystifying how to get all your pulse points without using half a bottle of perfume and having people smell you from 10km away. Whenever "gurus" talk about spritzing on the wrists, elbows, neck, knees, I was so confused! I thought I'd hate to be the person standing next to them on the subway. I use half a spritz at most during the day out of courtesy of others (and not to give myself a headache) and now I understand how to make that half spritz count. As always, an enjoyable and informative video. Thank you, Jamila!

I put on perfume only behind my ears. When I'm going out I always cover with a scarf. The only ones who will smell the perfume on me are the ones close enough for me to greet by kissing cheeks, and that's only a handful of people, that way I keep my sent private and I'm not making all people around me aware of it.
I remember when I was a kid accompanying my mom to a perfume store, then walking out of there sick and throwing up from all the concentrated smells. That experience made all strong smells repulsive to me, so when I can catch someone's perfume without being intimately close to them, even if I'm sitting next to them in a conference room or standing next to them especially in our line of work when we need to be as impersonal and have a sense of sobriety, if the smell isn't particularly pleasant to my own taste then I'm just disgusted with that person and I avoid them for the day.
When it comes to keeping perfume private, I agree a thousand per cent. For the sake of not disclosing social and economic differences, and avoid judging and being judged for the brand or the price of the perfume(s). It goes both ways; be it less pricey or expensive people are bound to judge and act on that judgement. The price of a perfume can easily be found online. Telling those around you about your luxury perfume when they can barely afford cheap ones, or disclosing your cheap perfume to people who don't ever buy anything below a certain threshold, both can be harmful when people's intentions are not pure.

One tip about Perfume I got was from Tova Borgnine, when she was selling her perfume on QVC. She said when you apply it to your wrists do NOT rub your wrists together. That “ crushes” the fragrance & ruins the natural dry down of the notes. Instead do the “ Royal Wave” to dry the wet perfume. Also you can spray it in front of you & walk through it to apply a light layer. I LOVE the perfumes her company still sells. I also love the ones from Philosophy.

Without your advice I wouldve been doing same mistakes with perfume or my purse or other habits over and over again. Thank you for teaching me basics and advanced tips! Also I think men would like to keep their cologne a secret as well but they usually aren't so discreet about it because they don't have a competitive environment with other males in that manner like the women.
Men compete in a different manner and particular formula while women are more passive competitive which is why most men don't mind sharing certain mundane things.
But I don't think anything was wrong with you using your husbands cologne as a example he probably gave permission to use it and help out with your video.

I believe it's the same with makeup or any other cosmetic product.. I told someone what foundation and moisturizer I use. She bought them and it was a disaster. Then accused me for recommending her the products and ruining her face. Lesson learned. When I'm asked I tell them that the products are suitable for my type of skin and they should do their own research and pick products according to their needs. When it comes to my scent I let them know that it was picked and gifted by my husband ant it's too personal for me.
I come off as rude and arrogant, yet people aren't really aware of the type questions they ask and their entitlement. Not every question demands an answer that tickles our ears. Also be aware of boundaries. For you it might not be such a big deal, but for some people it is. Respect that without rolling your eyes and throwing criticism at the person.
