My mom has always worn Chanel No 5. When I got my first paycheck, I was so excited to buy MY first bottle. But at 16,ugh! I hated it on me. I loved Loves lemon (and still do), and eventually moved to Oscar de la Rente (and still use it) and Opium. For my 50th bday, I tried Chanel No 5 again. Now it makes me feel as beautiful as my mom.
What a sweet post. It brought tears to my eyes as I too remember my mom and Chanel No 5. She only ever wore it when she was going out for the evening w my Dad...I would watch her get ready and loved the smell of her. She moved on to Red Door decades later but it was never the same.
Should try skyler is more organic derived. Alot of perfumes out there you see in department stores have just artificial chemicals that smell dam awful!

It’s actually pretty interesting that you mentioned not wearing coconut-scented body cream. Growing up, my mother always layered her scents beautifully, and it’s what I do now. I tend to lather my body with cocoa butter, and then spray a layer of Black Bod Body Spray, then I go over with The One by Dolce & Gabbana (I definitely enjoy my sweet vanilla notes like in Givenchy Pi - another favorite). It may seem like overkill, but I get compliments on my scent, even after a full day of wearing it. I’m not sure how common layering scents is among other cultures, in fact, I’m most likely offending most right now. Haha. But, I think it’s a way of making your own signature scent. Enchanting that sense of style with the sense of smell.
I agree! Layering is so much fun and doing it with different products (spray versus cream versus oil) is a blast for me because I love trying new things.

I absolutely LOVE 'Givenchy Pi' for the vanilla and the almost, almost caramel scent. It's in my Top 5 for sure. Currently waiting on 'The One' to come in soon.
While I was watching, I was literally thinking about just wearing essential oils and then I'm like if I use multiple I might as well make my own fragrance/perfume or whatever but oof sounds like a lot of work. So I find it interesting you layer scents, basically already did the "hard work" which u said u enjoy so that's awesome :')
In the 60's I met my German stepmother for the first time. She was a European ballerina and my dad brought her home to the states. I remember I was a 7 yo child and being mesmerized by her big bottle of Channel No 5. She even let us try a tiny bit and I felt so grown up. Funny how that memory has stayed with me.
I went to Grasse and the perfume museum with my aunt who is the one who got me obsessed with perfume. I was 13 and will never forget the experience. So incredible to see, would love to go back someday.
Theres a perfume that has always been a favorite of mine and although I own it, I don't use it because I still feel too young for it. That perfume is Anais Anais and there's actually a great story behind it! One time when I was around five years old I went into Sephora with my sister and my mom, we were browsing perfumes when I came across Anais Anais, I automatically fell in love with the fragrance and told my mom I wanted that perfume. When she saw which one I had pointed at she was surprised because that exact perfume had actually been the only perfume she tolerated when she was pregnant of me, however after she had me she was no longer able to use it because she found it to be too strong. It's so amazing how out of aaall the perfumes I chose the one my mom used while I was inside her tummy 💗
My perfume is a Givenchy , and it is very expensive in my country, but one young man who was in love with me gave it to me for the first time, he save money to buy it for me as a brithday gift. Now he is my husband , the perfume is La Petit Robe Noire
It's tragic when you search years to find a signature fragrance but then several years later the ingredients change or are switched to synthetics.Your body chemistry may not blend as well with the newer version.
My mom loved a perfume by Balmain called Cote d'Ivoire, I remember spraying it on myself secretly too. It was elegant and refined. Unluckily, it's been reformulated since then and is nothing of that kind anymore:(
The original Chanel # 5 had synthetics because they help the fragrance last longer, especially now when using ingredients from whales which is now illegal. Also, your body chemistry can change over time, as well as preferences. I used to hate Jadore and Shalimar. I love both of them now.

I like that you talked about perfume at different stages of your life. When I was in my 20's, I wore Liz Claiborne Sport and Sunflowers almost exclusively. In my 30's I gathered quite a collection and wore Beautiful, White Linen, Dior's Poison, CoCo Chanel, Chanel no 19, Givenchy. I always got compliments on my perfume! In my 40s I wore a simple vanilla Scent, or Grace. In my 50s...I have nothing! Guess what Justine, I'm going to treat myself to a new fragrance. Thank you for your video.
I concur! I think that appropriateness of fragrance changes as we age. It's like red lipstick - looks weird on a teenager, but is quite appropriate on a woman in her late 20's. I never wore sweet perfumes. My first perfume was Oscar Limited Edition eau de toilette. I still have some of it left - lovely scent with strong notes of jasmine. However, it wasn't until I turned 24 that I dared to wear spicier perfumes. I quite like Lancome La Vie Est Belle eau de parfum and Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium eau de parfum. Still, I don't feel old enough to wear them as an everyday scent. Clinique Happy Heart and the original Coach Poppy are more my speed for every day and definitely for spring/summer. I think, Irene, that since you're in your 50's now you should go big or go home - get Chanel no 5 ;)
Severian I really like Angel Muse, but afraid it might be too "young" for me? I also love Miss Dior, but same thing..maybe too youthful and floral for me? It's a hard one. I'm going to get a few samples this weekend.
I was thirteen when I was given my first perfume by an incredibly elegant French woman, a friend of my mother. It came in a soft little pouch and was called Je Reviens. I just loved it. After that at the age of fifteen or sixteen I was drawn to two of my mother's perfumes, Shalimar and Mitsouko by Guerlain. I'm 71 now and still love both but also others the last being from Diptique, I just love your videos. It makes me happy to know I can be stylish in a French way whilst retaining a little of my eccentricity.
Mitsouko oooooooohhhhhhh. Loved it so much; and Je Reviens when I was around 15/16; I thought I was the height of sophistication wearing it! Cant believe how many I have had and people are tripping my memory cells with just the names. Also So Pretty De Cartier which is DIVINE. Only had it once as it is wickedly expensive and it may have been discontinued now.
Thank you for an interesting lesson. As a nurse i was not allowed to wear scent at the hospital, so for years I didn't wear perfume at all. Now I am retired and rediscovering the joy of scent.
My “the one” is actually a man’s fragrance (though generally androgynous) by Maison Margiela. It is called Jazz Club. I’m quite petite and have a feminine style in terms of makeup and clothing so the contrast of wearing a spicy more masculine fragrance always makes me feel sexy and empowered.
In my mid-late teenage years I used to go for perfume shopping with my mother, she was fond of Dolce vita by Christian Dior. So that day I was about to buy my first perfume (I was 15) and as my mother bought her usual, I was looking trough the shelves and I saw Chanel n.5. I desperately wanted that, but my mother told me that I was to young to wear such a perfume and we opted for something more girlish, so we bought Prada Candy for me. Even now that I am 22, when we go to buy perfumes and I try to put my hands on Chanel n.5, she tells me to stop it and that it is still not my time to wear that perfume. Why would you even want to wear Chanel No. 5? My late Uncle and Aunt went to Paris for vacation and bought my Grandma a bottle of Chanel No. 5 and she never used perfume or any kind of fragrance, so it sat for years. Whenever we go to visit, I would put some on, and I thought it stunk. When I got older, I moved in with her to go to college and she still had it sitting on the dresser, and it didn't smell rancid or anything, so I thought, well, I'm older now, my scent tastes have changed from childhood, so I put some on. Nope, still didn't like it. Now that I'm older, the stuff I liked when I was younger, I no longer like and vice versa, so I thought, I'd try Chanel No. 5 again, and tried it on at some department store, and again N O P E!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't like it and never understand the hype and appeal of it. I've never smelled anyone wearing it, either. But, you know what, if you want it that bad, don't listen to your Mother------GO OUT AND BUY IT FOR YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!! I listened to my Mother for years about different stuff, and sometimes, I regret that I listened to her, because I lost out on stuff , she told me to take the first job offered me, and they were usually low paying, unfulfilling jobs that left me depressed for years, and assorted other stuff that I listened to her and regretted. SO GO BUY IT!!!!!!!!!! If it will make you happy and you love Chanel No. 5, then go out and buy it. It sounds like your Mother doesn't think there will ever be a good time to buy it. :)
Funny I like Gabrielle Essence and always told myself I’d buy No 5 when I turned 50. Now I’ve moved the marker to 70 because I still think it smells more mature as I inch closer to 50. Not yet.
ProudKansan08 on that note I feel my love for fragrance. As a child maybe 9 I lived heavier I want to say musk type of a fragrance I always felt beautiful in it and only wore it when every so often . As I got older I liked sweeter fragrance and lighter . Now if I smell a heavier musk I still love it but I know it’s not where I am now. I do love Marc Jacobs Marc Jacobs and Jimmy choo illicit so hard to find for me but I love it and in the summer like the sweet smell of Ariana grande sweet like candy. And lately I’m in search of a classic fragrance flowery but a lil heavier. I hope to find it one day. I think it’s the bergamot that I love.
We just visited Paris a week before the burning of the Notre Dame. We visited the Fraganard and they taught us that spraying behind the knees is called "come follow me" to become irresistible to men 😂 Loved the experience and this video😍
Did you buy a Fragonard perfume? One of my most loved is the 2015 Jasmine, my favorite flower, which has a mix of jasmine from Grasse, Egypt and India. It's a beautiful summer fragrance for those that like jasmine

YSL Opium, eau de toilette... funny story about it. I used to use Amor Amor by Cacharel, and being that I wasn’t a teen anymore, I decided I would try something else. I spent an hour or two at that perfume section of the store and could not find anything I liked in my price range... they all smelt the same to me and I didn’t enjoy any of them. So at that point I decided to give up, and before I left, I took a peak at the samples for the more expensive perfumes. I fell in love with YSL opium. I sprayed a bit on myself and decided that before I buy it, I should be sure it works with my body during the day. When my husband got home, he smelled me, stopped and said “this is the perfume, this is the one that when I went to a store with an ex girlfriend, I told her I liked and she hated. It’s YSL Opium!” I was so dumbfounded, i couldn’t believe we had such similar taste. Anyways, hence forth, I wear YSL Opium and he bought a big bottle of it for my birthday 😊
Im not sure where you live but if you have "super drug" in your country there is a perfume series called "Layering lab" by Super drug and the scent "Exotic" smells almost exactly like black opium
My signature scent is YSL black opium. People think it smells generic and too common but i have not met anyone else that wears it, and I have a super sensitive nose, but this perfume doesn't aggravate my nose at all!
In my mid-20's, I accidentally fell in love with what turned out to be a very popular perfume (Calvin Klein's Euphoria). After years of feeling very unoriginal and unsuccessfully searching for a new fragrance, I decided I wanted a custom perfume. For my 30th birthday, I was able to go to Grasse, France and design my own scent! It was a wonderful experience! Now I have an everyday scent that is made up of all my favorite smells and is entirely unique. And of course I have a few others that I vary based on my mood and how I would like to be perceived.
GLASgirl05 can you please share your experience of getting it custom made? That is one thing off the bucket list to get one made for yourself. It must have felt special.
I'm 62 and I've worn Jessica McClintock since I was in my early 30's! Occasionally I'll wear Chanel Coco Mademoiselle but only in the winter. I wanted to branch out in my 50's and get something a little more mature but my daughter said, "Mom, don't change! That perfume smells like you!" So here I am, still wearing the same perfume. But I get many compliments on it and still enjoy the fragrance immensely so, why not?! :)
Rubbing your fragrance is honestly not a big deal, there's a common misconception that rubbing will "break the fragrance molecules" but from a science perspective that's utter garbage. Unless your wrists emit radiation or you rub your wrists with the force of hadron colliders, you're not coming even close to destroying the fragrance molecules. The reason why rubbing is bad is because too much friction generates heat, which will cause the fragrance to evaporate faster. That reduces the longevity of the fragrance. It has nothing to do with breaking the fragrance molecules. Cheers

As a french woman I can certified that what she said about being old enough to feel "allowed" to wear Chanel n°5 is true . Frangances are levels here . When I was a teen, I wore " Miss Dior " but Cacharel's were also very popular . I'm 21 now and I'm also wearing Chloé on a daily basis ( I will never be caught dead not wearing perfume ) with a touch of Shalimar " souffle de parfum " when I need a boost . When I'm older, I will let myself wear it on a daily basis .
Actually it's "souffle de parfum" ("breath of perfume"), not "soufflé", which means a fluffy dessert. I know, French accents can be a bit tricky:) It is a name of a perfume and it is the newer and, according to the name, lighter version of the legendary Shalimar perfume by the French house Guerlain. The original version came up in 1925 and for me it is one of the most divine oriental scents ever created - the perfect blend of balsamic, vanilla and citrus notes with a bold smokyness and leather. Unfortunately the classic version is now considered too heavy and overpowering and that is why they came up with Shalimar Souffle de Parfum. Personally I prefer the "real thing" which is the older version, but if you like lighter, more subtle scents that are still complex I would go for Souffle.
So true about Chanel n°5. It was my great grand mother's perfume. When I was younger I could only associate that smell to her. Today, I am 22 I don't feel "mature" enough to wear "her" perfume. So weird haha.
Funny -- I've been wearing Chanel No 5 since I was 18. I first sampled it when in my first job while in uni, and I bought it on the spot with my first pay ... in no way did I feel I was 'doing it wrong'!
When I was a little, a close family friend always wore "Beautiful" by Estee Lauder. She also wore a leather jacket, and the smell of the two together was divine. I have such strong memories of fantastic-smelling hugs from her.

when your nose no longer smells your perfume any more, this means that it suits your skin perfectly. i never skip a day without it perfume. if i can't smell it, those around me ask me: "Oh wow! what are you wearing?" if i can smell it, i throw it out. i only use french parfum and have done so for the last 22 years. i own about 16 different fragrances. I'd never spray the air and waste it. spray it directly on your skin and enjoy it. layering is very important as well
Both my grandmothers wore Chanel no 5 all the time. I tried to wear it and I felt as if I smelled like an old lady. I'll have to wait until I feel like an old lady to truly enjoy it.
I felt the same! I didn’t understand why the scent was so attractive. Maybe in a few years my sense of smell will catch onto it. So far I enjoy smelling it off of my mom’s clothes when I borrow them or when she gives me her hand me downs. It’s a touch of nostalgia and the scent is much more pleasant.
Candidly Poppy My mom in law gave me some chanel #5. And I thought: good G-d, smells like an old lady. But it really grew on me. I wear it like Justine says, when I need confidence, or sometimes when I need the comfort of an older wiser lady like my mom or grandma who is not here.
My Mom passed away a few years ago and I remember all her scents. First came Estée Lauder Beautiful, it was glorious on her and she loved it so much. Then came Dune by Dior. Later was Angel and when I had to go through her things I came across an almost empty bottle of Angel. I now keep it in a tin with my cotton squares. When I open the tin I get the hint of scent and say “hi Mom”
Effie Basdra Shalimar was my mother's favorite perfume. She wore Chanel no. 5 when I was very young, but when one of her clients (she was a beautician) came in wearing Shalimar she fell in love with it. She asked what it was & the client told her. This woman routinely wore oversized men's shirts with horrible polyester pants (it was the 70s🙄) & I was astounded to hear that she wore perfume at all. This dowdy woman was also very, very wealthy & had a very big heart. She saw how much Mom loved the fragrance & when Christmas came around, she left a full 3.7 ounce bottle of Eau de Parfum for Mom in the empty beauty shop. Mom was done working for the holiday: imagine her astonishment when she walked into the shop with a load of clean towels & saw that package on the counter. I'd never seen her so overwhelmed by anything. It's a memory I cherish.
Perfume lover here. My first scent was a drugstore fragrance called Loves Baby Soft that I adored and wore through middle school. Anyone else remember it? My next favorite fragrance was Maroc; I thought it was wonderful but I think it was discontinued. In college I went through a patchouli and lavender stage and now years later I wear Chanel Mademoiselle, the yellow Versace, or Light Blue in the summer. I think it's interesting that these scents can trigger memories from when I used to wear them. Thanks Justine

I'm hungarian, living in Switzerland and I'm 57. These were the favourite parfums of my life: Annick Goutal: Eau du ciel , Eau de Charlotte, Ce soir ou jamais, Lanvin: Arpège, My sin, Jeanne , Guerlain: Eau de Guerlain, Neroli, L'heure bleu, Mitsouko, Samsara, Jardins de Bagatelle....When I was 25, I bought a bottle of Chanel N°5, and I never used it. Now I think I'm old enough to by a new one. I'm very excited about the new "light" version in the white bottle and I will definitly try it. At the moment, I use : Guerlain's Insolence; I can't get enough of this enchantig scent of violet and orange blossom ..and not least because of this beautiful, rose imperial golden bee bottle..but I have to admit , my husband is french 😉

As a young teen, I wore Lauren by Ralph Lauren and Anais Anais (which I just gifted to my 15 year old niece). At 57, I wear Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio, Diptyque's Volutes and Philosykos by Diptyque, Tom Ford's Santal Blush and Chanel No 19...but I am on the hunt for my next 'song'. I am leaning into woods and chypres, tobaccos and leather, deep rose. Might be time for Serge Lutens something something. It is so hard finding a new fragrance! Gosh, maybe now I'm ready for Chanel No 5? It was always my mother's scent...

I found THE PERFUME for me last year, I was running late and had to catch a bus to go to my hometown, so I stormed into the terminal and while I was passing thru I smelt it, and it was so exquisite that I had to go back. Turns out next to the door was a lady promoting it and told me the name: Mon Paris of YSL, I fell in love with it and bought it shortly after. I use it on special occasions only and my mood and outfit have to 'match' the perfum sort of speak, otherwise I'd rather use another one. Great video btw! :)
My friend Lisa was wearing that and I flipped out. It was smelled so good on her!!! I should probably get myself a sample and see how it goes with my chemistry.
My ballet teacher/coach/mentor is french and she introduced me to Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire. I have been a fan of Guerlain ever since. I am currently using either La Petite Robe Noire or Mon Guerlain, occasionally switching to Lancome's Miracle or a L'Occitane one. She taught me to never neglect my appearance, even when I am not feeling my best.
Thank you Justine! I’m rewatching this one after a long time. I’m Indian but my fascination with perfume goes back to my childhood in the Middle East. My dentist mum received designer perfumes as gifts from her rich Arab female patients as appreciation for her work. That’s where I first smelt “Opium”. I still remember standing closer to mum when she used it for special occasions just to get another whiff 😀 I’m 40+ now and have a soft corner for Guerlain - “La petite robe noir”. Am I too old for that? Still makes me smile when I wear it.

Hi Justine, My favorite perfumes are Coco Mademoiselle, Viktor & Rolf- Flowerbomb, Olympia-Paco Robanne, & I LOVE, Samsara by Guerlain. They say it's a night time perfume, but I wear it in the daytime as well.
I am the same, I thought I do something wrong hahaha, winter I like to wear more sweet ones and in summer I like to wear refreshing ones, but it's mostly how I feel that day. There are days i don't feel the mood to wear any.
Perfectly said. I also wear different perfumes depending on the mood and season. I have been asked by people what I wear several times, and when I give different answers, they think I just don't wanna share .... lol.
I stopped wearing perfume about a year ago...they started to bother me and smell too artificial. I loved Coco Mademoiselle and a few by Carolina Herrera and Burberry. Now I wear essential oils every once in a while and I'm thinking of trying some more natural scents by Pacifica. Thank you for your excellent videos Justine! I am the same! I do wear coco mademoiselle on special occasions otherwise I spray myself with essential oils mixed with water... I much prefer this. I tested the pacifia parfumes at wholes foods with high hopes but they were just intoxicatingly sweet, young smelling....but that's just me. I have a new favorite though that I'm dying to buy a bottle but I love all the varieties too much I can't decide on one, the brand is Jo Malone London and they just smell very natural and not offensive, I am very sensitive to smells and this is one where I had no issue breathing in deep, it is "not organic but uses mainly natural ingredients"
I must say that I'm kinda picky when it comes to perfumes. 98% of all perfumes just smell too strong for me and it doesn't feel right. I like light natural smelling perfumes. Lucky for me I bumped into Yves Rocher store which is not so common outside the France but we have few stores in my country. They are making natural cosmetics and they also have a line of perfumes that really smells like nature. I'm using Cherry blossom for more than a year now and it really smells like flowers. Very delicate and light smell which I don't mind using every day. I fell in love with Lilly of the Valley which again smell like the flower itself and it just feel amazing. Also Lilac smell incredibly and reminds me childhood because we had Lilac tree in our garden when I was a kid. They are also making more complicated perfumes but I didn't like any of them. If you like simple and light perfumes give it a try :)

Xochitl Pardo try these three I've mentioned. All these are having the same bottle and its like collection or something. Other Yves Rocher perfumes are much stronger. At least for me :)
My boyfriend and I went to Berlin in February and had decided beforehand we would buy each other perfumes on the first day instead of souvenirs so whenever we'd use it, it would take us back to Berlin. I've got the Jasmin Rouge by Tom Ford and my god do I love it ... It has become so tightly interwoven in my identity I feel naked when not wearing it. Such a great video, Justine!

Arpege in my 20s and YSL Rive Gauche from 40s to now. (I used little perfume in my 30s when my kids were little.) My sister also uses Rive Gauche - we've lived in different states and did not collude!! We both have autoimmune disorders and find many perfumes difficult to use but Rive Gauche doesnt seem to affect us, and it's a great "adult" fragrance.
most parfumes mess with my allergies/ make me tired and they just overall feel toxic, I use a light spray of chanel mademoiselle for a special night out, otherwise I use lavender essential oil or rose water in a spray bottle diluted in water and spray it through out the day. It doesn't wow anyone I don't think but I like it and it actually makes me feel refreshed.

my art teacher seriously smells so good like every time he passes I just take a good whiff lmaoo. Also, one time walking home from school a guy walked passed me and I literally had to turn my head because he smelled *that* good. That was about 2 years ago but I still remember it super clearly haha. That just goes to show how important scent is :)
When I was trying to find a seat at the university library to study for my finals, I walked past a guy who smelt very, very nice, and immediately recognised he was wearing Un Jardin Sur Le Toit by Hermes because I have it too. Now that is a rose, grass and apple scent, but it worked perfectly on him. That was also two years ago already haha.
I remember being really young and really despising the fragranced aimed at my age group, when I was 15 I went on a trip to Paris with my parents and a group of friends and we visited the Fragonard museum there and I completely and utterly fell in love with the Diamanté parfum. It's become a part of me at this point, all my friends make the comment "you smell like Paris" now when I come back to my home town.
Chanel No.5...my father bought me a bottle for my 16th birthday.....it is my long term standby for 60yrs. for special occasions. It is the ONLY perfume that does not 'change" scent on me. Other than that on a daily basis it is nothing or at some times I like to use an essential oil like bergamot or lavender. 4711 cologne is a favorite (for men / women) tough to find in the United States
I'm Indian and it's typical of my people to appreciate jasmine and sandel wood usually lite and flowery But I grew up in the middle east all my life and I have an appreciation for heavier scents, more earthy woody rather than flowery And thank you for this vidoe. I was waiting for her to mention Chloe and when she did I was like "Oh moi aussi" because that is always my go to. I typically like more earthy scents (terre d’hermes) but Chloe compliments me so well and I, (like so many others as she explained in the video) worked hard trying to find a scent that worked with me in a feminine yet classy way. The first “real” perfume I’ve ever tried was my mum’s Chanel No. 5. She let me use it for some kind of evening event, I was about 15 and I remember thinking that it smelled beautiful, but too grown-up, heavy and serious. 🙂 I’m currently rereading How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are (a truly brilliant book!) and it says that you should find “your” perfume before you turn 30. And I have! Mademoiselle, also by Chanel. It was love at first smell. 🙂
My Grandmother has ALWAYS worn the same perfume, I have always enjoyed the smell of it. This year, I was old enough to start wearing it myself, I'm 40. Estee Lauder, Youth Dew. It is the most enchanting, mesmerizing fragrance that I have ever worn. Thank you Grandmother, I love you to the moon and back!
I LOVE the Parisian Chic videos, Justine. I didn't know why I put fragrance on my elbows, or behind my knees. Now, I know why I apply it where I do! I would love to know how to choose fragrance, and hear more suggestions on fragrances for different age groups and occasions. I don't leave the house without perfume. For special nights I wear Givenchy Ange ou Demon or YSL Black Opium. For less special nights I wear Thierry Mugler Angel or Niki de Saint Phalle. For day to day I wear Hermes Un Jardin, Armani Code, Chanel Coco, Tory Burch, or Atelier Vanille Incensee.
As a Portuguese woman i must say, I follow all this to the T without even knowing. All the little particular points. I also used to prefer more flowery fragrances when i was younger (I used Christina Herrera and a range of flowery names to choose from), now in my 30's and also my late 20's i found MY fragrance and that is Alien (Thierry Mugler). It's absolutely enchanting and it has the heat i want without overpowering my own scent. I also like to have another fragrance to hand to choose from in a day i want a subtiel scent (i often like the scent of the lily flower for is not a totally "young" one but more elegant). Loved this.
When it comes to perfume, (and fashion) I am often paralyzed by indecision. So I buy nothing. This year, I congratulated myself because I finally committed to a scent for my laundry dryer sheets. Baby steps! Love the videos. Always educational!

I call my perfume selection My Fragrance Wardrobe 😉 Like Justine, when I need something to shore me up for a confrontation or difficult situation it's Chanel no. 5, no question. My mom wore it when I was very small & when I wear it I feel like Mom is standing beside me, & I am bathed in warmth and confidence. *sigh*
Smelling my mother's perfume is absolutely like stepping in a time machine straight to hugging her neck before one of those rare occasions when she got dressed up and went out, to when I was small enough to be picked up and held. I can't wear it myself because I feel somehow traitorous! It's as if it can be hers only, and I don't measure up.
Marturquesa, if you like a mossy woodsy scent, You may like Aromatics elixir. I wore it in my 20s but after 40, have recently rediscovered it and feel that it fits fine at this stage of life. If you want to go a little more to the edge of the woods, you may be up for Estee Lauder's Aliage. It has a deep woody, almost mossy scent. It is not sold at stores any more but a counter consultant can pace an online order and ship it to you. Good luck!

I love to hear all the reasoning behind the French Chic My fav perfumes are YSL Paris and Estée Lauder Knowing & Youth Dew. Perfume is the only thing I don't buy cheap. Thank you Justine for explaining everything so clearly to us.

I feel as though I am walking away from this video so much more informed. Thank you for mentioning the difference between the parfum, the eau de parfum and the eau de toilette. I've heard people saying before 'I swear the eau de parfum smells better than the eau de toilette version of the same fragrance' and I never understood why or how or what was the difference, now it all makes sense.
Perfect lecture one of my favorite luxuries and topics. I would add that fragrances can be considered seasonal - in Summer, wear a light, more floral fragrance; in Winter, a deeper fragrance with more undertones, such as Chanel No. 5. You are so right about changing fragrances as we age. That isn't just a preference, it has to do with our hormonal changes and how fragrance smells on us. In my 20's and 30's I wore First by Van Cleef & Arpel, and Rive Gauche by Yves Saint Laurent. In my 30's and 40's and into my 50's I wore a gardenia blends, such as Chanel Gardenia (very nice and quite expensive). Now in my 60's I am wearing Chanel No. 5 in Winter. During Spring and other times, I wear J'Adore by Christian Dior (the original) and Cartier Goutte de Rose (these are not old lady/Victorian rose scents, but subtle and beautiful). A timeless beautiful perfume I have worn for decades (but sparingly and not often) is Rouge Hermes. These are all French perfumes -- Not accidentally, n'est -ce pas?! The most important aspect to me is that wearing perfume makes me feel feminine and gives a finished or polished feel as I step out the door to my life. But, we should wear it at home and for ourselves, too. It was helpful to know that we should take breaks from wearing perfume. Some people say that what we eat (such as seafood) and taking medicine we take can alter the smell of our fragrance as they change the Ph and other chemicals in our bodies. Merci, Justine!
My favorite perfumes /colognes are Ciara by Charles Revson , which is a winter fragrance, Jill Sander #4, which is a favorite and so classy, made in France. Flowerbomb by Victor & Rolf is a beautiful scent. Tigress by Faberge, used since the 70’s and still love it. More of a winter fragrance. Also from the 70’s Loves Fresh Lemon, Loves Baby Soft and Loves White Vanilla..all by Dana. You can still find them sometimes! And I also love Apricot Vanilla Eau de Toilette, byComptoir Sud Pacifique ..I just had a small tester the regular size is outrageously expensive. eBay has the perfume oil in a roll on for a few bucks. I absolutely Love Chanel #5, my go to.fragrance. I feel you are not dressed until you put on a fragrance before leaving the house.
I love using Lanvin Arpege. The history of the house, the design of the bottle and the beautiful powdery floral scent (I wear this everyday). When I want to be more intense, I love Guerlain's Shalimar - the smell is addicting but can be overpowering. It's such a classic fragrance and it's been around for so long. The bottle is so beautiful, it is an ornament in itself, it was named after the Shalimar gardens. Dior Hypnotic Poison is the only sweet smell that I love because it still has a sophistication to it, but it can be quickly overwhelming and give you a headache so I only do like 2-3 sprays. The Dior Miss Dior fragrance is absolutely divine for springtime, it has a feminine and natural floral note, and it's hard to overspray. Finally, Bottega Veneta Pour Homme is my perfect masculine fragrance - I love the warm spicy scent, it's so alluring and lasts so long!
I wear three scents. During Spring into summer, I wear Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire. The first time I smelled it was at Orly waiting for a flight and I became addicted! During summer into early fall, I wear Fragonard's Fleur d'Oranger. Orange Blossom is my favorite scent of all time. During Fall, when the weather gets a bit cooler, it's back to La Petite Robe Noire. Then during the winter months I wear Guerlain's L'Instant. Those three. Last year I did discover adopt' parfum and the little spray falcons are purse friendly I paid , I think 7 euros per each small spray and the oud ambre scent is becoming a second Fall favorite. I prefer French scents because they aren't "fizzy" and they don't give me awful headaches!!
It’s important to note that an eau de toilette and eau de parfum are usually not differing just in concentration. The notes are often changed between the two, giving you an entirely different fragrance.
One of my most loved perfumes is a single note Jasmine, my favorite flower, from Fragonard in Grasse. I also love Chanel N°5 for special occasions, Donna Karen Cashmere Mist for date nights and Chloe for everyday
I still remember my mother switching perfumes every season she used to wear Poem in winter, Samsara in autumn, Après l'Ondée in spring and Anais Anais in summer and her special occasion one was channel N9 I miss her ritualistic behavior towards perfume and, I kind of inherited her habit most of my fragrances are from La Maison de Guerlain, especially the old ones such as Mitsouko, Jardins de Bagatelle, Chamade and of course Vol de Nuit when you feel dangerous and ready to take a risk.

The most beautiful perfume I ever purchased was call Immortal from L'occitane. I bought it for my daughter . It smelled like a very dry field of flowers and real honey. They discontinued it 😭. Ohhhh how I love perfumes. I use the walk into a cloud after shower method.
This is my favorite video. I have been collecting and studying perfumes for several decades (started young:) and love that you advised people not to rub their wrists together; I see so many people doing that. Also appreciate the provenance story of #5--which was actually my first perfume at 16 and truthfully, I wore it only once on a very special occasion at that time. I think the formula was actually a mistake, as well--an assistant spilled triple the amount of aldehydes in the juice and it was the best mistake ever to happen in perfume! Have since enjoyed it in the many flanker versions-Eau Premiere and the parfum, but none is as iconic as the Eau de Toilette. I've been to Paris many times and spent some time in Aix-en-Provence and love the French culture. I have many, many perfumes but I would say some of my favorites are 24, Faubourg by Hermes, La Chasse Aux Papillons by L'Artisan, Belle de Soleil by Fragonard, Cristalle by Chanel (love the Eau Vert version too) Fleurissimo by Creed, and Baccarat Rouge by Kurdjikan, among many others. Buying a new perfume is a very long process for me, because some scents give me a terrible headache. Does anyone have such strong reaction as well? Perfume can be lovely at the first smell, but I really need to try the perfume on my body to work and open the full spectrum of scents. I test new perfumes every time I travel via plane. If I survive the flight without any headache, it is possible I purchase the miniature size :) My long time favorite for the daytime is Lanvin Eclat D'Arpege EdP and I use the exact same miniatures what Justine has :))) Yves Saint Laurent Parisienne and Opium!
Shaaala same here. I was gifted Chanel madmoiselle only to realize that it caused be horrible headache leading to common cold. It just triggered allergies to many other high end perfumes like Gucci guilty and so on. Perfumes are not for everyone I guess.
My nose works like a dog's nose and strong smells disturbing me terribly. I can not use perfume, e.d. perfume or e.d. toilette. I can only use cologne. For not to use that low smell I carry my cologne with me and spraying at every hour. If someone uses strong fragnance around me, I cover up my nose and mouth with a fabric or with my hands. Salutes to my friends who can not use perfumes.
Hi! You should try perfumes made with only natural ingredients... or make them yourself from real essential oils. Begin with low concentrations, because even if natural, you are already sensitized to scents, then as you get used to it, you may want higher concentrations.
Fragrances and smells evoke memories of people, places and time. Too many pushy older women wore Chanel #5 when I was young so I don't like the fragrance. But I have always liked the subtle and varied fragrances emitted by a group of well-groomed people. Fewer people seem to be wearing fragrances lately so I stopped wearing it outside of home. At home, I wear just a drop or two of CK1 oil (very light, fresh, citrus, unisex). I've recently decided to wear fragrances in public again. I use only use a tiny amount and never apply it to areas that will be waved about (such as wrists). I have a dear friend that wears a fragrance that I very much dislike and I don't have the heart to say anything. So I want to make sure that my fragrance, when worn, is very subtle.
Thank you so much for this video! I learned a lot... fragrance has always been intensely important to me! My parents gave my first set of Lily of the Valley perfume, lotion and powder. It was one of my favorite gifts of all time. I was 12. From then, I discovered honeysuckle and then jasmine perfumes. I had a college fragrance- White Shoulders- which I loved! I loved L’air de taunt and Then I went onto Halston. I wore it for years! I chose signature scents as each season of my life occurred...I wore Beautiful on my wedding day...my husband bought me Opium with the birth of each of our 3 children... now, I am refinding myself as a mom of adults and a grandmother and I find myself returning to my youthful fragrance choices of single flower fragrances... I, right now,bought myself the Orange Blossom perfume you just told us about! It is my birthday month... so why not! I am greatly looking forward to it! Thank you Justine! You are fantastique!
I used to wear Lily of the Valley also, by Coty! I'm sure it was pretty cheap because it came from a drugstore, but I've smelled other versions and it was pretty close.

I became obsessed with my mothers perfume bottles aged four... I had my first perfume aged 13 Anaïs Anaïs and went through the heady 80s and learnt about what works for me. I now tend to stick to three major perfume houses and sometimes get a more commercial, lighter everyday fragrance... I can't live without perfume

Try spraying it on and smell on your skin, ask the salespeople and tell the what other scents you like, do not try too many at once (let your nose take a break by smelling the coffee beans in the shop, that is what they are for) and here is a cool site where you can compare the different notes, top notes are the ones you notice first etc...www.fragrantica.com/ (there are other language versions as well) :)
It's funny, I don't put an age limit on perfume. It's down to personal taste. Sweet perfumes aren't synonymous with teenagers. As a teenager, I wore musky and sexy scents because that's how I wanted to feel.

My first perfume was Opium when I was 9. A girl that I looked up to was 19 had that perfume and everyday I would ask if I could smell the bottle. One day she gave me the perfume that was more than half full. I was so thrilled and excited. I still love and wear it 35 years later.
My signature scent is Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel. My mother bought it for me when I was 18. I came back to it 15 years later. Every time I apply it, it takes me back to that day, when my mom bought for me my first “ real” perfume. I love your video! Very insightful! And you are very elegant!
I spent 6 weeks in Paris in 2010 and fell in love with Dior J’Adore. It became my signature scent. I love the light clean and feminine fragrance. I completely agree with the age dimension of choosing parfum. I have stopped at Lancôme counters in department stores and thought “yuck - that smells like an old lady.” I’m sure that’s my American culture showing. 🙄. I’m now 54 years old and while I still love J’Adore, I’m thinking of exploring new scents. Thanks for the videos you provide giving guidance. I just found your channel and am taking notes! I am a person who loves to recreate myself and evolve. I’m at a point right now where that is necessary and have binge watched many of your videos. I love them all! My mom has always worn Chanel No 5. When I got my first paycheck, I was so excited to buy MY first bottle. But at 16,ugh! I hated it on me. I loved Loves lemon (and still do), and eventually moved to Oscar de la Rente (and still use it) and Opium. For my 50th bday, I tried Chanel No 5 again. Now it makes me feel as beautiful as my mom.

It’s actually pretty interesting that you mentioned not wearing coconut-scented body cream. Growing up, my mother always layered her scents beautifully, and it’s what I do now. I tend to lather my body with cocoa butter, and then spray a layer of Black Bod Body Spray, then I go over with The One by Dolce & Gabbana (I definitely enjoy my sweet vanilla notes like in Givenchy Pi - another favorite). It may seem like overkill, but I get compliments on my scent, even after a full day of wearing it. I’m not sure how common layering scents is among other cultures, in fact, I’m most likely offending most right now. Haha. But, I think it’s a way of making your own signature scent. Enchanting that sense of style with the sense of smell.
I agree! Layering is so much fun and doing it with different products (spray versus cream versus oil) is a blast for me because I love trying new things.

While I was watching, I was literally thinking about just wearing essential oils and then I'm like if I use multiple I might as well make my own fragrance/perfume or whatever but oof sounds like a lot of work. In the 60's I met my German stepmother for the first time. She was a European ballerina and my dad brought her home to the states. I remember I was a 7 yo child and being mesmerized by her big bottle of Channel No 5. She even let us try a tiny bit and I felt so grown up. Funny how that memory has stayed with me.

Theres a perfume that has always been a favorite of mine and although I own it, I don't use it because I still feel too young for it. That perfume is Anais Anais and there's actually a great story behind it! One time when I was around five years old I went into Sephora with my sister and my mom, we were browsing perfumes when I came across Anais Anais, I automatically fell in love with the fragrance and told my mom I wanted that perfume. When she saw which one I had pointed at she was surprised because that exact perfume had actually been the only perfume she tolerated when she was pregnant of me, however after she had me she was no longer able to use it because she found it to be too strong. It's so amazing how out of aaall the perfumes I chose the one my mom used while I was inside her tummy 💗

It's tragic when you search years to find a signature fragrance but then several years later the ingredients change or are switched to synthetics.Your body chemistry may not blend as well with the newer version.
My mom loved a perfume by Balmain called Cote d'Ivoire, I remember spraying it on myself secretly too. It was elegant and refined. Unluckily, it's been reformulated since then and is nothing of that kind anymore:(

The original Chanel # 5 had synthetics because they help the fragrance last longer, especially now when using ingredients from whales which is now illegal. Also, your body chemistry can change over time, as well as preferences. I used to hate Jadore and Shalimar. I love both of them now.

I like that you talked about perfume at different stages of your life. When I was in my 20's, I wore Liz Claiborne Sport and Sunflowers almost exclusively. In my 30's I gathered quite a collection and wore Beautiful, White Linen, Dior's Poison, CoCo Chanel, Chanel no 19, Givenchy. I always got compliments on my perfume! In my 40s I wore a simple vanilla Scent, or Grace. In my 50s...I have nothing! Guess what Justine, I'm going to treat myself to a new fragrance. Thank you for your video.

I concur! I think that appropriateness of fragrance changes as we age. It's like red lipstick - looks weird on a teenager, but is quite appropriate on a woman in her late 20's. I never wore sweet perfumes. My first perfume was Oscar Limited Edition eau de toilette. I still have some of it left - lovely scent with strong notes of jasmine. However, it wasn't until I turned 24 that I dared to wear spicier perfumes. I quite like Lancome La Vie Est Belle eau de parfum and Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium eau de parfum. Still, I don't feel old enough to wear them as an everyday scent. Clinique Happy Heart and the original Coach Poppy are more my speed for every day and definitely for spring/summer. I think, Irene, that since you're in your 50's now you should go big or go home - get Chanel no 5 ;)

I was thirteen when I was given my first perfume by an incredibly elegant French woman, a friend of my mother. It came in a soft little pouch and was called Je Reviens. I just loved it. After that at the age of fifteen or sixteen I was drawn to two of my mother's perfumes, Shalimar and Mitsouko by Guerlain. I'm 71 now and still love both but also others the last being from Diptique, I just love your videos. It makes me happy to know I can be stylish in a French way whilst retaining a little of my eccentricity.
Mitsouko oooooooohhhhhhh. Loved it so much; and Je Reviens when I was around 15/16; I thought I was the height of sophistication wearing it! Cant believe how many I have had and people are tripping my memory cells with just the names. Also So Pretty De Cartier which is DIVINE. Only had it once as it is wickedly expensive and it may have been discontinued now.

Thank you for an interesting lesson. As a nurse i was not allowed to wear scent at the hospital, so for years I didn't wear perfume at all. Now I am retired and rediscovering the joy of scent.
My “the one” is actually a man’s fragrance (though generally androgynous) by Maison Margiela. It is called Jazz Club. I’m quite petite and have a feminine style in terms of makeup and clothing so the contrast of wearing a spicy more masculine fragrance always makes me feel sexy and empowered.
I wear jazz club and by the fireplace half and half. It's sweet with a cologney punch and it is SO good

In my mid-late teenage years I used to go for perfume shopping with my mother, she was fond of Dolce vita by Christian Dior.
So that day I was about to buy my first perfume (I was 15) and as my mother bought her usual, I was looking trough the shelves and I saw Chanel n.5.
I desperately wanted that, but my mother told me that I was to young to wear such a perfume and we opted for something more girlish, so we bought Prada Candy for me.
Even now that I am 22, when we go to buy perfumes and I try to put my hands on Chanel n.5, she tells me to stop it and that it is still not my time to wear that perfume.

Why would you even want to wear Chanel No. 5? My late Uncle and Aunt went to Paris for vacation and bought my Grandma a bottle of Chanel No. 5 and she never used perfume or any kind of fragrance, so it sat for years. Whenever we go to visit, I would put some on, and I thought it stunk. When I got older, I moved in with her to go to college and she still had it sitting on the dresser, and it didn't smell rancid or anything, so I thought, well, I'm older now, my scent tastes have changed from childhood, so I put some on. Nope, still didn't like it. Now that I'm older, the stuff I liked when I was younger, I no longer like and vice versa, so I thought, I'd try Chanel No. 5 again, and tried it on at some department store, and again N O P E!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't like it and never understand the hype and appeal of it. I've never smelled anyone wearing it, either. But, you know what, if you want it that bad, don't listen to your Mother------GO OUT AND BUY IT FOR YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!! I listened to my Mother for years about different stuff, and sometimes, I regret that I listened to her, because I lost out on stuff , she told me to take the first job offered me, and they were usually low paying, unfulfilling jobs that left me depressed for years, and assorted other stuff that I listened to her and regretted. SO GO BUY IT!!!!!!!!!! If it will make you happy and you love Chanel No. 5, then go out and buy it. It sounds like your Mother doesn't think there will ever be a good time to buy it. :)
Funny I like Gabrielle Essence and always told myself I’d buy No 5 when I turned 50. Now I’ve moved the marker to 70 because I still think it smells more mature as I inch closer to 50. Not yet.
Chanel n.5 has the lightweight version, l'eau and it suits young women very well, and very good to make a first step for that great parfum)
ProudKansan08 on that note I feel my love for fragrance. As a child maybe 9 I lived heavier I want to say musk type of a fragrance I always felt beautiful in it and only wore it when every so often . As I got older I liked sweeter fragrance and lighter . Now if I smell a heavier musk I still love it but I know it’s not where I am now. I do love Marc Jacobs Marc Jacobs and Jimmy choo illicit so hard to find for me but I love it and in the summer like the sweet smell of Ariana grande sweet like candy. And lately I’m in search of a classic fragrance flowery but a lil heavier. I hope to find it one day. I think it’s the bergamot that I love.
We just visited Paris a week before the burning of the Notre Dame. We visited the Fraganard and they taught us that spraying behind the knees is called "come follow me" to become irresistible to men 😂 Loved the experience and this video😍
Did you buy a Fragonard perfume? One of my most loved is the 2015 Jasmine, my favorite flower, which has a mix of jasmine from Grasse, Egypt and India. It's a beautiful summer fragrance for those that like jasmine

YSL Opium, eau de toilette... funny story about it. I used to use Amor Amor by Cacharel, and being that I wasn’t a teen anymore, I decided I would try something else. I spent an hour or two at that perfume section of the store and could not find anything I liked in my price range... they all smelt the same to me and I didn’t enjoy any of them. So at that point I decided to give up, and before I left, I took a peak at the samples for the more expensive perfumes. I fell in love with YSL opium. I sprayed a bit on myself and decided that before I buy it, I should be sure it works with my body during the day.
When my husband got home, he smelled me, stopped and said “this is the perfume, this is the one that when I went to a store with an ex girlfriend, I told her I liked and she hated. It’s YSL Opium!”
I was so dumbfounded, i couldn’t believe we had such similar taste. Anyways, hence forth, I wear YSL Opium and he bought a big bottle of it for my birthday 😊

Im not sure where you live but if you have "super drug" in your country there is a perfume series called "Layering lab" by Super drug and the scent "Exotic" smells almost exactly like black opium
My signature scent is YSL black opium. People think it smells generic and too common but i have not met anyone else that wears it, and I have a super sensitive nose, but this perfume doesn't aggravate my nose at all!
In my mid-20's, I accidentally fell in love with what turned out to be a very popular perfume (Calvin Klein's Euphoria). After years of feeling very unoriginal and unsuccessfully searching for a new fragrance, I decided I wanted a custom perfume. For my 30th birthday, I was able to go to Grasse, France and design my own scent! It was a wonderful experience! Now I have an everyday scent that is made up of all my favorite smells and is entirely unique. And of course I have a few others that I vary based on my mood and how I would like to be perceived.

I'm 62 and I've worn Jessica McClintock since I was in my early 30's! Occasionally I'll wear Chanel Coco Mademoiselle but only in the winter. I wanted to branch out in my 50's and get something a little more mature but my daughter said, "Mom, don't change! That perfume smells like you!" So here I am, still wearing the same perfume. But I get many compliments on it and still enjoy the fragrance immensely so, why not?! :)

Rubbing your fragrance is honestly not a big deal, there's a common misconception that rubbing will "break the fragrance molecules" but from a science perspective that's utter garbage. Unless your wrists emit radiation or you rub your wrists with the force of hadron colliders, you're not coming even close to destroying the fragrance molecules.
The reason why rubbing is bad is because too much friction generates heat, which will cause the fragrance to evaporate faster. That reduces the longevity of the fragrance. It has nothing to do with breaking the fragrance molecules.

As a french woman I can certified that what she said about being old enough to feel "allowed" to wear Chanel n°5 is true . Frangances are levels here . When I was a teen, I wore " Miss Dior " but Cacharel's were also very popular . I'm 21 now and I'm also wearing Chloé on a daily basis ( I will never be caught dead not wearing perfume ) with a touch of Shalimar " souffle de parfum " when I need a boost . When I'm older, I will let myself wear it on a daily basis .

Actually it's "souffle de parfum" ("breath of perfume"), not "soufflé", which means a fluffy dessert. I know, French accents can be a bit tricky:)
It is a name of a perfume and it is the newer and, according to the name, lighter version of the legendary Shalimar perfume by the French house Guerlain. The original version came up in 1925 and for me it is one of the most divine oriental scents ever created - the perfect blend of balsamic, vanilla and citrus notes with a bold smokyness and leather. Unfortunately the classic version is now considered too heavy and overpowering and that is why they came up with Shalimar Souffle de Parfum. Personally I prefer the "real thing" which is the older version, but if you like lighter, more subtle scents that are still complex I would go for Souffle.
So true about Chanel n°5. It was my great grand mother's perfume. When I was younger I could only associate that smell to her. Today, I am 22 I don't feel "mature" enough to wear "her" perfume. So weird haha.
Funny -- I've been wearing Chanel No 5 since I was 18. I first sampled it when in my first job while in uni, and I bought it on the spot with my first pay ... in no way did I feel I was 'doing it wrong'!
When I was a little, a close family friend always wore "Beautiful" by Estee Lauder. She also wore a leather jacket, and the smell of the two together was divine. I have such strong memories of fantastic-smelling hugs from her.
My mama used to wear Beautiful all the time! She passed away from cancer in 2012, but I still have her bottle of perfume because it reminds me of her

when your nose no longer smells your perfume any more, this means that it suits your skin perfectly. i never skip a day without it perfume. if i can't smell it, those around me ask me: "Oh wow! what are you wearing?" if i can smell it, i throw it out. i only use french parfum and have done so for the last 22 years. i own about 16 different fragrances. I'd never spray the air and waste it. spray it directly on your skin and enjoy it. layering is very important as well
Both my grandmothers wore Chanel no 5 all the time. I tried to wear it and I felt as if I smelled like an old lady. I'll have to wait until I feel like an old lady to truly enjoy it.

I felt the same! I didn’t understand why the scent was so attractive. Maybe in a few years my sense of smell will catch onto it. So far I enjoy smelling it off of my mom’s clothes when I borrow them or when she gives me her hand me downs. It’s a touch of nostalgia and the scent is much more pleasant.
Those were my exact words when I first smelled Chanel No. 5, it has the old lady smell.. It's hugely overrated.

My Mom passed away a few years ago and I remember all her scents. First came Estée Lauder Beautiful, it was glorious on her and she loved it so much. Then came Dune by Dior. Later was Angel and when I had to go through her things I came across an almost empty bottle of Angel. I now keep it in a tin with my cotton squares. When I open the tin I get the hint of scent and say “hi Mom”

I also got a Shalimar when I turned 30. I were it every day since and didn't get bored with... I feel so sophisticated when I put it on....
Effie Basdra Shalimar was my mother's favorite perfume. She wore Chanel no. 5 when I was very young, but when one of her clients (she was a beautician) came in wearing Shalimar she fell in love with it. She asked what it was & the client told her. This woman routinely wore oversized men's shirts with horrible polyester pants (it was the 70s🙄) & I was astounded to hear that she wore perfume at all. This dowdy woman was also very, very wealthy & had a very big heart. She saw how much Mom loved the fragrance & when Christmas came around, she left a full 3.7 ounce bottle of Eau de Parfum for Mom in the empty beauty shop. Mom was done working for the holiday: imagine her astonishment when she walked into the shop with a load of clean towels & saw that package on the counter. I'd never seen her so overwhelmed by anything. It's a memory I cherish.

Perfume lover here. My first scent was a drugstore fragrance called Loves Baby Soft that I adored and wore through middle school. Anyone else remember it? My next favorite fragrance was Maroc; I thought it was wonderful but I think it was discontinued. In college I went through a patchouli and lavender stage and now years later I wear Chanel Mademoiselle, the yellow Versace, or Light Blue in the summer. I think it's interesting that these scents can trigger memories from when I used to wear them.

I'm hungarian, living in Switzerland and I'm 57. These were the favourite parfums of my life: Annick Goutal: Eau du ciel , Eau de Charlotte, Ce soir ou jamais, Lanvin: Arpège, My sin, Jeanne , Guerlain: Eau de Guerlain, Neroli, L'heure bleu, Mitsouko, Samsara, Jardins de Bagatelle....When I was 25, I bought a bottle of Chanel N°5, and I never used it. Now I think I'm old enough to by a new one. I'm very excited about the new "light" version in the white bottle and I will definitly try it. At the moment, I use : Guerlain's Insolence; I can't get enough of this enchantig scent of violet and orange blossom ..and not least because of this beautiful, rose imperial golden bee bottle..but I have to admit , my husband is french 😉

Oh my goodness, I fell down the fragrance rabbit hole and I'm so glad I did! I loved your video -- so informative and inspiring. Wearing fragrance -- for me -- is just a part of getting dressed. As a young teen, I wore Lauren by Ralph Lauren and Anais Anais (which I just gifted to my 15 year old niece). At 57, I wear Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio, Diptyque's Volutes and Philosykos by Diptyque, Tom Ford's Santal Blush and Chanel No 19...but I am on the hunt for my next 'song'. I am leaning into woods and chypres, tobaccos and leather, deep rose. Might be time for Serge Lutens something something. It is so hard finding a new fragrance! Gosh, maybe now I'm ready for Chanel No 5? It was always my mother's scent...
Have you tried Estee Lauder Knowing? It's a fabulous woody rose chypre. Dark, dry and deep.
Since you mentioned Chypres and leather, Do try Bottega Venetta EDP. Or Gris Dior.. Both are my absolute favorites and are v similar to each other

I found THE PERFUME for me last year, I was running late and had to catch a bus to go to my hometown, so I stormed into the terminal and while I was passing thru I smelt it, and it was so exquisite that I had to go back. Turns out next to the door was a lady promoting it and told me the name: Mon Paris of YSL, I fell in love with it and bought it shortly after. I use it on special occasions only and my mood and outfit have to 'match' the perfum sort of speak, otherwise I'd rather use another one. Great video btw! :)

My ballet teacher/coach/mentor is french and she introduced me to Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire. I have been a fan of Guerlain ever since. I am currently using either La Petite Robe Noire or Mon Guerlain, occasionally switching to Lancome's Miracle or a L'Occitane one. She taught me to never neglect my appearance, even when I am not feeling my best.

My dentist mum received designer perfumes as gifts from her rich Arab female patients as appreciation for her work. That’s where I first smelt “Opium”. I still remember standing closer to mum when she used it for special occasions just to get another whiff 😀

Hi Justine, My favorite perfumes are Coco Mademoiselle, Viktor & Rolf- Flowerbomb, Olympia-Paco Robanne, & I LOVE, Samsara by Guerlain. They say it's a night time perfume, but I wear it in the daytime as well.
I get bored with perfumes very easily so I always end up having three or four different ones. I like to change up according to mood and season.
I am the same, I thought I do something wrong hahaha, winter I like to wear more sweet ones and in summer I like to wear refreshing ones, but it's mostly how I feel that day. There are days i don't feel the mood to wear any.

I am the same! I do wear coco mademoiselle on special occasions otherwise I spray myself with essential oils mixed with water... I much prefer this. I tested the pacifia parfumes at wholes foods with high hopes but they were just intoxicatingly sweet, young smelling....but that's just me. I have a new favorite though that I'm dying to buy a bottle but I love all the varieties too much I can't decide on one, the brand is Jo Malone London and they just smell very natural and not offensive, I am very sensitive to smells and this is one where I had no issue breathing in deep, it is "not organic but uses mainly natural ingredients"
I must say that I'm kinda picky when it comes to perfumes. 98% of all perfumes just smell too strong for me and it doesn't feel right. I like light natural smelling perfumes. Lucky for me I bumped into Yves Rocher store which is not so common outside the France but we have few stores in my country. They are making natural cosmetics and they also have a line of perfumes that really smells like nature. I'm using Cherry blossom for more than a year now and it really smells like flowers. Very delicate and light smell which I don't mind using every day. I fell in love with Lilly of the Valley which again smell like the flower itself and it just feel amazing. Also Lilac smell incredibly and reminds me childhood because we had Lilac tree in our garden when I was a kid. They are also making more complicated perfumes but I didn't like any of them. If you like simple and light perfumes give it a try :)

Xochitl Pardo try these three I've mentioned. All these are having the same bottle and its like collection or something. Other Yves Rocher perfumes are much stronger. At least for me :)
My boyfriend and I went to Berlin in February and had decided beforehand we would buy each other perfumes on the first day instead of souvenirs so whenever we'd use it, it would take us back to Berlin. I've got the Jasmin Rouge by Tom Ford and my god do I love it ... It has become so tightly interwoven in my identity I feel naked when not wearing it.

Arpege in my 20s and YSL Rive Gauche from 40s to now. (I used little perfume in my 30s when my kids were little.) My sister also uses Rive Gauche - we've lived in different states and did not collude!! We both have autoimmune disorders and find many perfumes difficult to use but Rive Gauche doesnt seem to affect us, and it's a great "adult" fragrance.
most parfumes mess with my allergies/ make me tired and they just overall feel toxic, I use a light spray of chanel mademoiselle for a special night out, otherwise I use lavender essential oil or rose water in a spray bottle diluted in water and spray it through out the day. It doesn't wow anyone I don't think but I like it and it actually makes me feel refreshed.

Also, one time walking home from school a guy walked passed me and I literally had to turn my head because he smelled *that* good. That was about 2 years ago but I still remember it super clearly haha. That just goes to show how important scent is :)
When I was trying to find a seat at the university library to study for my finals, I walked past a guy who smelt very, very nice, and immediately recognised he was wearing Un Jardin Sur Le Toit by Hermes because I have it too. Now that is a rose, grass and apple scent, but it worked perfectly on him. That was also two years ago already haha.
I remember being really young and really despising the fragranced aimed at my age group, when I was 15 I went on a trip to Paris with my parents and a group of friends and we visited the Fragonard museum there and I completely and utterly fell in love with the Diamanté parfum. It's become a part of me at this point, all my friends make the comment "you smell like Paris" now when I come back to my home town.

Chanel No.5...my father bought me a bottle for my 16th birthday.....it is my long term standby for 60yrs. for special occasions. It is the ONLY perfume that does not 'change" scent on me. Other than that on a daily basis it is nothing or at some times I like to use an essential oil like bergamot or lavender. 4711 cologne is a favorite (for men / women) tough to find in the United States
I'm Indian and it's typical of my people to appreciate jasmine and sandel wood usually lite and flowery
But I grew up in the middle east all my life and I have an appreciation for heavier scents, more earthy woody rather than flowery

I typically like more earthy scents (terre d’hermes) but Chloe compliments me so well and I, (like so many others as she explained in the video) worked hard trying to find a scent that worked with me in a feminine yet classy way. Ha I wore more woodsy scents in my 20’s and in my 30’s I’m loving anything with rose base. Perhaps I’m reaching for my youth. 😂

The first “real” perfume I’ve ever tried was my mum’s Chanel No. 5. She let me use it for some kind of evening event, I was about 15 and I remember thinking that it smelled beautiful, but too grown-up, heavy and serious. 🙂 I’m currently rereading How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are (a truly brilliant book!) and it says that you should find “your” perfume before you turn 30. And I have! Mademoiselle, also by Chanel. It was love at first smell. 🙂
My Grandmother has ALWAYS worn the same perfume, I have always enjoyed the smell of it. This year, I was old enough to start wearing it myself, I'm 40. Estee Lauder, Youth Dew. It is the most enchanting, mesmerizing fragrance that I have ever worn. Thank you Grandmother, I love you to the moon and back!

I LOVE the Parisian Chic videos, Justine. I didn't know why I put fragrance on my elbows, or behind my knees. Now, I know why I apply it where I do! I would love to know how to choose fragrance, and hear more suggestions on fragrances for different age groups and occasions.
I don't leave the house without perfume. For special nights I wear Givenchy Ange ou Demon or YSL Black Opium. For less special nights I wear Thierry Mugler Angel or Niki de Saint Phalle. For day to day I wear Hermes Un Jardin, Armani Code, Chanel Coco, Tory Burch, or Atelier Vanille Incensee.

As a Portuguese woman i must say, I follow all this to the T without even knowing. All the little particular points. I also used to prefer more flowery fragrances when i was younger (I used Christina Herrera and a range of flowery names to choose from), now in my 30's and also my late 20's i found MY fragrance and that is Alien (Thierry Mugler). It's absolutely enchanting and it has the heat i want without overpowering my own scent. I also like to have another fragrance to hand to choose from in a day i want a subtiel scent (i often like the scent of the lily flower for is not a totally "young" one but more elegant). Loved this.

I call my perfume selection My Fragrance Wardrobe 😉 Like Justine, when I need something to shore me up for a confrontation or difficult situation it's Chanel no. 5, no question. My mom wore it when I was very small & when I wear it I feel like Mom is standing beside me, & I am bathed in warmth and confidence. *sigh*
Smelling my mother's perfume is absolutely like stepping in a time machine straight to hugging her neck before one of those rare occasions when she got dressed up and went out, to when I was small enough to be picked up and held. I can't wear it myself because I feel somehow traitorous! It's as if it can be hers only, and I don't measure up.
Marturquesa, if you like a mossy woodsy scent, You may like Aromatics elixir. I wore it in my 20s but after 40, have recently rediscovered it and feel that it fits fine at this stage of life. If you want to go a little more to the edge of the woods, you may be up for Estee Lauder's Aliage. It has a deep woody, almost mossy scent. It is not sold at stores any more but a counter consultant can pace an online order and ship it to you. Good luck!

I've heard people saying before 'I swear the eau de parfum smells better than the eau de toilette version of the same fragrance' and I never understood why or how or what was the difference, now it all makes sense.

Perfect lecture one of my favorite luxuries and topics. I would add that fragrances can be considered seasonal - in Summer, wear a light, more floral fragrance; in Winter, a deeper fragrance with more undertones, such as Chanel No. 5. You are so right about changing fragrances as we age. That isn't just a preference, it has to do with our hormonal changes and how fragrance smells on us. In my 20's and 30's I wore First by Van Cleef & Arpel, and Rive Gauche by Yves Saint Laurent. In my 30's and 40's and into my 50's I wore a gardenia blends, such as Chanel Gardenia (very nice and quite expensive). Now in my 60's I am wearing Chanel No. 5 in Winter. During Spring and other times, I wear J'Adore by Christian Dior (the original) and Cartier Goutte de Rose (these are not old lady/Victorian rose scents, but subtle and beautiful). A timeless beautiful perfume I have worn for decades (but sparingly and not often) is Rouge Hermes. These are all French perfumes -- Not accidentally, n'est -ce pas?! The most important aspect to me is that wearing perfume makes me feel feminine and gives a finished or polished feel as I step out the door to my life. But, we should wear it at home and for ourselves, too. It was helpful to know that we should take breaks from wearing perfume. Some people say that what we eat (such as seafood) and taking medicine we take can alter the smell of our fragrance as they change the Ph and other chemicals in our bodies. Merci, Justine!
My favorite perfumes /colognes are Ciara by Charles Revson , which is a winter fragrance, Jill Sander #4, which is a favorite and so classy, made in France. Flowerbomb by Victor & Rolf is a beautiful scent. Tigress by Faberge, used since the 70’s and still love it. More of a winter fragrance. Also from the 70’s Loves Fresh Lemon, Loves Baby Soft and Loves White Vanilla..all by Dana. You can still find them sometimes! And I also love Apricot Vanilla Eau de Toilette, byComptoir Sud Pacifique ..I just had a small tester the regular size is outrageously expensive. eBay has the perfume oil in a roll on for a few bucks. I absolutely Love Chanel #5, my go to.fragrance. I feel you are not dressed until you put on a fragrance before leaving the house.
I love using Lanvin Arpege. The history of the house, the design of the bottle and the beautiful powdery floral scent (I wear this everyday). When I want to be more intense, I love Guerlain's Shalimar - the smell is addicting but can be overpowering. It's such a classic fragrance and it's been around for so long. The bottle is so beautiful, it is an ornament in itself, it was named after the Shalimar gardens. Dior Hypnotic Poison is the only sweet smell that I love because it still has a sophistication to it, but it can be quickly overwhelming and give you a headache so I only do like 2-3 sprays. The Dior Miss Dior fragrance is absolutely divine for springtime, it has a feminine and natural floral note, and it's hard to overspray. Finally, Bottega Veneta Pour Homme is my perfect masculine fragrance - I love the warm spicy scent, it's so alluring and lasts so long!
Spraying perfume in the air is a great idea for the perfume makers but when I spend hundreds on a perfume I want it on me not in the air :-)

I wear three scents. During Spring into summer, I wear Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire. The first time I smelled it was at Orly waiting for a flight and I became addicted! During summer into early fall, I wear Fragonard's Fleur d'Oranger. Orange Blossom is my favorite scent of all time. During Fall, when the weather gets a bit cooler, it's back to La Petite Robe Noire. Then during the winter months I wear Guerlain's L'Instant. Those three. Last year I did discover adopt' parfum and the little spray falcons are purse friendly I paid , I think 7 euros per each small spray and the oud ambre scent is becoming a second Fall favorite. I prefer French scents because they aren't "fizzy" and they don't give me awful headaches!!

Why do you change your perfume with the season changes?
It’s important to note that an eau de toilette and eau de parfum are usually not differing just in concentration. The notes are often changed between the two, giving you an entirely different fragrance.
One of my most loved perfumes is a single note Jasmine, my favorite flower, from Fragonard in Grasse. I also love Chanel N°5 for special occasions, Donna Karen Cashmere Mist for date nights and Chloe for everyday

she used to wear Poem in winter, Samsara in autumn, Après l'Ondée in spring and Anais Anais in summer
and her special occasion one was channel N9
I miss her ritualistic behavior towards perfume and, I kind of inherited her habit
most of my fragrances are from La Maison de Guerlain, especially the old ones such as Mitsouko, Jardins de Bagatelle, Chamade and of course Vol de Nuit when you feel dangerous and ready to take a risk.

Here is my perfume anthology ;). 16 yrs old, Halston (jeans) Lauren (dressy), 23 yrs old, CK one (jeans) Banana Republics Classic ( dressy), 30 yrs old, Cartiers Concentree (jeans) Angel (dressy), 40 yrs old, Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue and Cartier Eau de Cartier (jeans) Angel Thierry (dressy), 50 yrs old, Jo Malone Wood sage and sea salt, Basil and Neroli (jeans), Diptyque Philosykos, (dressy and anytime). The most beautiful perfume I ever purchased was call Immortal from L'occitane. I bought it for my daughter . It smelled like a very dry field of flowers and real honey. They discontinued it 😭. Ohhhh how I love perfumes. I use the walk into a cloud after shower method.
I have two Jo Malone scents. I like her fragrances as well as aniq goutal.
This is my favorite video. I have been collecting and studying perfumes for several decades (started young:) and love that you advised people not to rub their wrists together; I see so many people doing that. Also appreciate the provenance story of #5--which was actually my first perfume at 16 and truthfully, I wore it only once on a very special occasion at that time. I think the formula was actually a mistake, as well--an assistant spilled triple the amount of aldehydes in the juice and it was the best mistake ever to happen in perfume! Have since enjoyed it in the many flanker versions-Eau Premiere and the parfum, but none is as iconic as the Eau de Toilette. I've been to Paris many times and spent some time in Aix-en-Provence and love the French culture. I have many, many perfumes but I would say some of my favorites are 24, Faubourg by Hermes, La Chasse Aux Papillons by L'Artisan, Belle de Soleil by Fragonard, Cristalle by Chanel (love the Eau Vert version too) Fleurissimo by Creed, and Baccarat Rouge by Kurdjikan, among many others. It's like wine collecting, but lasts MUCH longer! Thanks for this video, and love your channel, Justine.

Buying a new perfume is a very long process for me, because some scents give me a terrible headache. Does anyone have such strong reaction as well?
Perfume can be lovely at the first smell, but I really need to try the perfume on my body to work and open the full spectrum of scents. I test new perfumes every time I travel via plane. If I survive the flight without any headache, it is possible I purchase the miniature size :)
My long time favorite for the daytime is Lanvin Eclat D'Arpege EdP and I use the exact same miniatures what Justine has :))) Yves Saint Laurent Parisienne and Opium!

Shaaala same here. I was gifted Chanel madmoiselle only to realize that it caused be horrible headache leading to common cold. It just triggered allergies to many other high end perfumes like Gucci guilty and so on. Perfumes are not for everyone I guess.
My nose works like a dog's nose and strong smells disturbing me terribly. I can not use perfume, e.d. perfume or e.d. toilette. I can only use cologne. For not to use that low smell I carry my cologne with me and spraying at every hour. If someone uses strong fragnance around me, I cover up my nose and mouth with a fabric or with my hands. Salutes to my friends who can not use perfumes.
Hi! You should try perfumes made with only natural ingredients... or make them yourself from real essential oils. Begin with low concentrations, because even if natural, you are already sensitized to scents, then as you get used to it, you may want higher concentrations.
Fragrances and smells evoke memories of people, places and time. Too many pushy older women wore Chanel #5 when I was young so I don't like the fragrance. But I have always liked the subtle and varied fragrances emitted by a group of well-groomed people. Fewer people seem to be wearing fragrances lately so I stopped wearing it outside of home. At home, I wear just a drop or two of CK1 oil (very light, fresh, citrus, unisex). I've recently decided to wear fragrances in public again. I use only use a tiny amount and never apply it to areas that will be waved about (such as wrists). I have a dear friend that wears a fragrance that I very much dislike and I don't have the heart to say anything. So I want to make sure that my fragrance, when worn, is very subtle.

Thank you so much for this video! I learned a lot... fragrance has always been intensely important to me! My parents gave my first set of Lily of the Valley perfume, lotion and powder. It was one of my favorite gifts of all time. I was 12. From then, I discovered honeysuckle and then jasmine perfumes. I had a college fragrance- White Shoulders- which I loved! I loved L’air de taunt and Then I went onto Halston. I wore it for years! I chose signature scents as each season of my life occurred...I wore Beautiful on my wedding day...my husband bought me Opium with the birth of each of our 3 children... now, I am refinding myself as a mom of adults and a grandmother and I find myself returning to my youthful fragrance choices of single flower fragrances... I, right now,bought myself the Orange Blossom perfume you just told us about! It is my birthday month... so why not! I am greatly looking forward to it! Thank you Justine! You are fantastique!
I used to wear Lily of the Valley also, by Coty! I'm sure it was pretty cheap because it came from a drugstore, but I've smelled other
versions and it was pretty close.

I became obsessed with my mothers perfume bottles aged four... I had my first perfume aged 13 Anaïs Anaïs and went through the heady 80s and learnt about what works for me. I now tend to stick to three major perfume houses and sometimes get a more commercial, lighter everyday fragrance... I can't live without perfume
I love wearing Chanel No. 5, I also love Hermes Twilly and Juliette Has a Gun's Not a Perfume.

It's funny, I don't put an age limit on perfume. It's down to personal taste. Sweet perfumes aren't synonymous with teenagers. As a teenager, I wore musky and sexy scents because that's how I wanted to feel.

My first perfume was Opium when I was 9. A girl that I looked up to was 19 had that perfume and everyday I would ask if I could smell the bottle. One day she gave me the perfume that was more than half full. I was so thrilled and excited. I still love and wear it 35 years later.

I spent 6 weeks in Paris in 2010 and fell in love with Dior J’Adore. It became my signature scent. I love the light clean and feminine fragrance. I completely agree with the age dimension of choosing parfum. I have stopped at Lancôme counters in department stores and thought “yuck - that smells like an old lady.” I’m sure that’s my American culture showing. 🙄. I’m now 54 years old and while I still love J’Adore, I’m thinking of exploring new scents. Thanks for the videos you provide giving guidance. I just found your channel and am taking notes! I am a person who loves to recreate myself and evolve. I’m at a point right now where that is necessary and have binge watched many of your videos. I love them all!
