Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros.
Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content.
Joker premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2019, where it won the Golden Lion, and was released in the United States on October 4, 2019. The film polarized critics; while Phoenix's performance was praised, the dark tone, portrayal of mental illness, and handling of violence divided responses.[6] Joker also generated concerns of inspiring real-world violence; the movie theater where the 2012 Aurora, Colorado mass shooting occurred during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises refused to show it. The film set box office records for an October release and has grossed over $745 million worldwide, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2019 and the third-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Too many people slept on Cameron's performance. Man literally have Nicholson's smile, Ledger's voice, and Hamill's laugh. Cameron is one of those rare actors who actually knows a lot about their character's background.
Agreed, But the issue is the fact that he didn't even make the character different from the others where is that pop that makes him stand out? Cameron isn't remotely better than heath or Nicholson, and to all the gotham fan boys out there: Heath ledger > Cameron

Disagree; as entertaining as he was to watch, Jerome just felt like a really good impression of Heath Ledger. Jeremiah was a lot better, but I wasn't a fan of his "J" persona in the finale which, once again, felt very derivative.
HeroK Exactly. If it wasn't for all the legal BS about which company owns who, Cameron's would of gain alot more popularity in the DC fanbase and even from non DC fans. He deserves more credit in my opinion.

5. Romero - Surprisingly well-realised despite the whole 60s series being a slapstick comedy
6. Leto - I genuinely think there was potential there, but his design and dialogue were just terrible

13:17 To be fair Jack Napier was crazy and evil long before he ever became The Joker as shown by the fact that after killing Thomas and Martha Wayne he was about to kill Bruce as well with a sick smile on his face. And the file Bruce reads says that Napier had mood swings and was emotionally unstable. Falling into the chemicals just made him completely snap.

I think Cameron's Monaghan Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenyx 's performances are equally good as they give us a 5 type of jokers with 5 different personalities all matching some points of the joker as we know him in the comics so that's up to the spectactor to choose which one he prefers the most but I think :
-Heath 's Jokers was a nihylistic sociopath which totally fits whats he says and does in TDK( playing with gotham as his stomping ground to face batman and its people )
-Jerome is a insane sociopathic showman born in the circus hence his needs to puts on the show and Going out with a bang if needed
-Jeremiah is a psychopathic architect in nature which explains why he's so meticulous in everything he plans and craft , his back up plans have back up plans and he's really unpredictable as he has a very cold and creepy vibe ( he doesnt need to put on the show like jerome exept in " Ace chemicals " episode , last thing unlike his brother Jeremiah uses also psychological warfare tactics against his enemies
-J is The boogeyman of Gotham as he's the combination of Jerom's insanity and Jeremiah Evilness ( Jeremiah falling into the vat made him go down the rabbit hole even more )
hiding a Evil and sadistic mastermind with a twisted sense of humor ( the full blown joker as we know him )
- Arthur Fleck is very special as He's not a fundamentally bad person but he's Broken and has nothing to loose now which explains his anarchist behavior at the end of the movie , that being said His purpose in life has always been to bring a smile on other people's faces which he managed to do in some way in the end ( clown movement born of his actions etc ) and we can assume that his psychotic mind will go madder with the time which will drive him to be the full blown joker nemesis of Batman
Their respectives backgrounds fits totally the acting of each actors( which was a real addition to each characters and make them really stand out as we understand why they are how they are although i agree Heath Ledger's joker past is a bit fuzzy )
I Prefer Gotham's joker as the background of the Valeska Brothers is great and The fact that we know that one of them created the other kinda restores the "Joker has a unknown origin 's vibe"
( Sorta the snake biting his own tail thing )+ Cameron's performances as young jokers is just chilling , we can totally assume in both case that Jerome or Jeremiah will grow up to be the full blown joker as they are two sides of him

LETS GOOO,, dude. You are literally the first person I have ever seen put Jerome in first place or even remotely high, and it makes me SO fucking happy. That is literally the DEFINITIVE best live action joker performance I have ever seen. He gets the personality perfect, his voice is amazing (mimicking Mark hamils fantastically, it even heath ledger), and his preformance and drive just perfectly matches the joker in every way. I genuinely believe this is the greatest live action joker interpretation that there has been to this day, and i actually was so genuinely surprised when you agreed with me

I like to think of the Joker (Heath Ledger) did what he did to get Batman to stop. If Batman did less, criminals would do less, notice how they got more serious when Batman got serious, and he did get what he wanted, to get Batman to stop.
Arthur Fleck isn’t even nearly close to being the best Joker, I completely agree with you on that, but in all fairness they weren’t really trying to make him a great Joker, the goal of the movie was to tell an unsettling story about mental illness and disguise it as a comic book movie so people would actually go see it, and I’d say they succeeded with what they wanted to do.
That's my biggest frustration with the movie. It's Joker to the bare minimum in every way. I personally think the Valeska twins were better Jokers.
@@awesomesharkhand1876 The way I look at it, what it wanted to do is show that anyone could go insane when pushed enough. I think the movie is good, and probably my personal favorite movie from this year, but people comparing this Joker to Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, The Valeska twins and ESPECIALLY Mark Hamill are mistaken. It's a good performance, yes, but I don't really wanna compare him to the other more iconic ones because that wasn't even the goal of the movie. This is just another portrayal.
The movie doesn't really show him fully transition into the Joker, more just what caused him to go down the path that he did.
@@Schwoomy It's still another portrayal among many. I personally prefer the twins because they felt more like the Joker to me. You're honestly pretty lucky. Joker fans are talking about how each actor is doing something different and how they do something great for the character, but the Spider-Man community when comparing the different versions becomes a war zone.

Also, definitely glad we can all accept the different versions as all being great in their own ways (Except Jared Leto for obvious reasons.)

I like to think that Phoenix’s Joker is the origin of the Joker in the Nolan universe but not the same character that meets Batman. Ledger’s Joker would have then gotten the idea for the white face paint and green hair from the crazy man who killed a talk show host on live TV roughly 27 years ago.
I know this is head canon but it's impossible as seen from the ending.
@@awesomesharkhand1876 Yeah obviously there are things that conflict with certain things in Batman Begins but if we're splitting hairs then the actors playing Bruce's parents were also different. Joker doesn't actually contradict anything in The Dark Knight so I consider it an alternate prequel in place of Batman Begins.

There's also the theory that Arthur imagined some of the clown masks when they weren't really there and the murder of the Waynes that was shown took place in his imagination. He could've completely fabricated his clown following but that would be too much of a stretch since the clown riot on the subway was verified by Murray.

I loved jack Nicholson's performance as joker! The only issue I have with that movies take on the character in my opinion is I think Tim Burton missed the more complex aspects to joker's personality/philosophy that makes joker so great. I mean he nailed wrighting joker's sadistic humor and love for madness/ violence but I feal like he still had the end goals of jack Napier and not the joker if that makes sense. I don't like how he spends half of the movie trying to get Vicky vale. Yeah I know it's more of a lust thing but that seems to be something a typical crime boss would be worried about not the joker. The only person joker is obsessed with other himself is Batman. Battling the bat is his main motivation of being a villain "without Batman crime has no punchline". But Jack's seems just to see him as an annoying problem to get rid of.

Exactly. That's my only problem with Joker, it was pretty much Arthur's movie with a Joker cameo in the last 15 minutes. But it was so good, and I really hope we can see Joaquin in the role again and get to see more of his Joker.

Phoenix’s Joker didn’t really feel like the Joker we all know and love tbh. I really like the film, but as a “definitive portrayal of The Joker” I don’t think that was the filmmaker’s intention from the beginning. I feel Joker was more meant to show how a common person could become The Joker in realistic scenario, not how the larger than life character The Joker came to be. That’s a big difference. But yeah, overall, I think the film could have been way more subversive and risky if it really wanted to. Imagine Pheonix’s Joker taking inspiration from A Clockwork Orange, now you have an amazing film!
I have friends who still watch the 60s Batman show and they aren't even huge Batman fans.

Phoenix was the better acting performance but kind of did a disservice to the canon, Ledger’s character got the actual character down to a tee with a modern gritty feel to him.
Just thought I’d say, Jerome Valeska was the twin that was “born bad” and Jeremiah was smart, isolated and normal. He turned “insane” when Jerome had Scarecrow create an insanity toxin for his brother so he could continue his work and ‘paint the town crazy’. But apart from that, this list is pretty accurate and I agree with your choices fully !
Actually that's quite possible. After seeing how psychotic Jerome is, Uncle Zach told Jeremiah to tell some lies about Jerome's psychotics. After these their mother decided to put Jeremiah away to Saint Ignacius, since it's a Catholic School, they hoped that Jeremiah won't become as psychotic as Jerome.
jerome is the best comic accurate live action joker, heath and joaqeen obv have better performances, but they arent really comic accurate, they show their own else worlds version of him. jerome clearly take some inspiration for mark hamil, heath ledger and even jack nicholson, and made the best most comic accurate portrayal of the joker to this day imo.
I think everyone agrees that Leto was the worst and the best is a coin toss between Ledger and Phoenix
