Matt has one of the best live guitar sounds I've ever heard, not to mention his chops and creative style of playing. Exceptional songwriter and musician.
Wanted to add that I have taken both of Matt's classes on Truefire. They are incredible. Easy to follow but complex enough that you can learn something new every time you work with the material at nearly every level. I gig at least once a week in a blues group and these videos have done a lot to help me evolve as a live player. And if you haven't seen the UA-cam video of his show at the Funky Biscuit (2017 11 10) please go check it out. There is something wonderful going on there and it is immediate. I am on a huge MS kick right now as a result of watching that show. Can't wait to see him live. Sorry to be a fanboy :)
Nothing wrong with being a major fan. Im a huge fan also and he is a super player and a super nice guy to. A few years ago I pushed some festival organizers here in Australia to get him out for our jazz and blues festival. He was bloody awesome that night. I also got to speak to him back stage after his show and he is a very down to earth muso. You wont he disapointed when you see him live.
Matt hotfoot from TPS...what a gent Matt is, so humble, honest a real guitar player. Dumped his large pedal board for what he really needs...a lesson the for us all. I love the fact that he uses a British made 'S' type guitar. All along, since 1970, I always wanted a 100 watt Hiwatt amp & 4x12, and now I know why...for the headroom...Thanks Matt :)
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost the password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!
Captain does it again. Really enjoy seeing the humanness of fantastic guitarist’s that your line of questioning brings out. It’s about the playing and the gear but it’s the person that makes it real. Thanks Lee you amplify the music with a human touch!
Matt is one of the truly gratest talents today, not just playing the blues but evolving and refine guitar playing. We can only wish him all success and all possibilities to expand his ideas and productions not limited by tight budgeting which unfortunately today impact great artists. His Truefire courses are incredibly useful , practical and inspiring. Lee thanks for the talk, you have a career as tv host show, tactful and intelligent.
Matt is the reason I started playing guitar again after putting it away for 17 years. I built a couple of Warmoth strats that match his spec, got a Two Rock, whole deal. I don't play lke Matt but listening to him, I figured out that it's okay to sound nice - to sound interesting and not harsh. I think he's a pioneer of sorts.
Really interesting interview, thanks! Matt's touch and tone is one of the very best out there right now. Love that jazziness he brings to it, rather than the same old blues scales. Awesome!
I never heard of Matt but have been using his string set for a A year now. As soon as I used the set I knew I had the tone I was looking for. Had no idea that Matt was a blues man. The tone says it all. Great string set. 11 to 54 with a softer mid gauge. SRV style.
YEAH, I've been waiting for this episode for years. Matt is a friend of mine and I've told him "you have to do an episode of The Captain Meets" this is Killa!!
really? wow, im so jealous, matt is a big inspiration to me, he has my favorite blues playing of the living guys today. hes the best imo. how do you know him? can you tell him Brian from hawaii loves him
Never heard of this guy; his thoughts on dynamics, etc. is very refreshing. Regarding "too bluesy for jazz, too jazzy for blues", these ideas never come from musicians, only fans or critics feel the need to so tightly compartmentalize art.
Fabulous interview, well done and thank you. I too have bought both Matt's TrueFire courses and can confirm they are incredible. It's like sitting down for a personal three hour lesson with the man, just brilliant.
Sometimes a bit complicated guitar solos...Awesome player, seems humble and affordable ! Love him for years now. kindest regards from France, Happy new year all Folks ! Viva ANDERTON’S 🤘
I have been a fan of Matt’s for several years now. His tone and playing are what makes him a favorite of mine. I started using John Mangon strings several years ago because I loved the tone from hearing Matt play.
I last saw Matt live in November 2014 in Sale, Manchester - what a fantastic gig. It's been too long! Come back to Brewery Arts in Kendal so I can see you live again Matt!
He's brilliant! I watched the TPS video with him from last Friday. I immediately decided I need the Mad Professor Supreme. NOW...I need the damn Super Black too. Especially knowing what they're capable of through my V140! 🙌🏻
Luv it luv it luv it (!,!,!) YES! my all time favorite guitar hero... So where is part TWO? Thanx, Lee... You're truly a great and charming host/interviewer... and, Why oh why did you not jam a bit??? ( your playing is truly good e-nuff (!) and better all the time IMHO) Thanx again & cheers
to be honest, i did not know matt schofield, because i confused him with the other two. but he is such a likeable person and he sounds really huge. i will definitely check him out.
I don't know why, but when I saw the last name I thought The Captain Meets John Scofield haha. Still of course always a treat when I see another one of these episodes
hi there, owning 5 Yamaha Pacifica 112 Vs, and 4 Mad Professor Simbles, and one Twimble( soon arriving), Matt has his own signature ped: the Mad Professor Supreme! ( sadly both Simble and Twimble are discontinued,)...
I wonder what amp is beneath the Bassman on the Right(Behind Lee) ..Looks like a Dumble? Would've loved to have heard Matt play thur it :P ...So happy to see him on the show!
could you try really hard to persuade mr.David Gilmour to appear in the famous Anderson’s interview room . I’m sure everybody would love to hear him talk about his roots and of course the guitars and gear. Thank you
Recorded music has little to no market value, and there isn’t really any space in the mainstream for this type of musician. Like when Bowie got SRV to play on his record, it pushed him out into the mainstream. That kind of opportunity doesn’t exist anymore. It’s not like Ed Sheerhan is going to start putting lead guitar breaks on his songs.
Kebo Boke yor are right Kebo. But its sad. We slowly kill culture and real artists with quick mainstream “music”. I hope we some day find a way to support the good artists :-)
@@goswo Yeah, the really sad part is that streaming has popped up and is an amazing resource for music consumers and creators, but very little of the money it generates goes back into investing in the production of new music. Companies like Apple and Spotify are tech companies, not music companies. So as much as record labels have always been bastards, it was at least their business to find and create new talent and invest in creating music. the new digital mediums are pretty parasitical in comparison.
@@PaulJonesy It would certainly be epic if Rob could somehow broker an appearance. Gilmour is beyond wealthy, though, and has no incentive to appear based on compensation.
Matt's a great guitar player who makes impressive music... that's all that should ever matter. Why are people so fixated on labelling every darn thing, and insisting that all artists be placed into easily identifiable musical boxes? Musical purists of any genre really bother me for this reason. Music is meant to expand and find new areas of expression... Hendrix himself used to be forever frustrated with folks going on and on about the old blues legends, and how he himself was supposed to fit into their idea of what the blues were supposed to be all about.
Hey Lee....if you can get Joe Satriani to 'drop by' the shop, maybe buy him a pint at the Drummond, I might sign all my wealth over to you (no chance, ha ha!) if you succeed. After all, you had Joe's 'pupil', Steve Vai over, and he was so humble....no harm in asking Joe over one day....as they say, 'who dares wins' :) You know, Mr J. Satriani is such a nice guy, he would probably say 'yes, I'd be happy to come yo your shop'. What a coup that would be :) If that ever was to happen, I would fly over from over 6000 miles away, where I live, to have a pint with you and Joe...sincerely.
Matt has one of the best live guitar sounds I've ever heard, not to mention his chops and creative style of playing. Exceptional songwriter and musician.
Wonderful interview. Matt is a towering talent and a very grounded gentleman as well.
Without exception the best British guitarist since Eric Clapton. It's great to also see how modest and reflective he is
since Clapton..actual Lol..always the yardstick..people know Clapton and that's it.
Such a great talent! His phrasing & that sound is to die for.
Matt just seems to nail the tension and release, so good.

AWESOME interview, thank you for introducing Lonnie Mack to me!🎸🔥
What an incredibly gifted player, and what a gift that you made this video. Thank you!
Love so much the inspirational playing of Matt. So musical and soulful. And that Strat sound is the ONE I like.
I've loved this dude for awhile now. Great fingers on this guy. Love his sound, love his approach.

I once saw B.B. playing in bebop style in one of UA-cam videos, and it looked very easy for him. Doubtlessly B.B. is technically very capable.
Captain meets Michael Landau, please make it happen.
