Alex is a certified DaVinci Resolve trainer and video producer with a mission to simplify and reduce the learning curve of producing fantastic video content. Alex has been in filmmaking for over 14 years and, in 2016, set up his company, Depiqd (said Dee-PikT), which initially focused on traditional video production.
Now, whilst Depiqd still offers video production services to our clients today, the focus is on reaching and helping as many people as possible to get started using video and make the process of learning enjoyable, stress-free and efficient without it costing a fortune.
Whether you have personal or business-driven goals, video is so powerful and can reach people in many ways that other forms of media can. However, it can be laborious, complicated, and expensive, and it takes a long time to become proficient, so often, people give up far too soon.

Who here edits vertical video and is this something that’s going to help you? Which platforms are you editing for mainly? 👍🏻
Hi I wanted this function in Davinci for a long time, but still I have an issue with 4k vertical format. It doesn't allow me to scale it all the way leaving a huge black frame. Do you know how to fix it?
When i do this i am unable to see the vertical res button...?
I do all the time in order to promote my UA-cam channel on instagram where I have more followers. I don't actually record full videos vertically but I find this format is attention grabbing on IG, more so than traditional horizontal ones. I am seeing that only the HD settings actually work for me on DaVinci Resolve, the max I can set a timeline in terms of dimensions for vertical video to work and scale for me is 1080x1920. Anything larger than that is simply ignored. Not sure why that is.
@@yumimigaming right click on timeline>timeline settings>unclick the check that says keep timeline settings, and from the drop down menu, select 'Scale full frame with crop'
@alexcameron-depiqd What about doing it in reverse? Taking a vertical video and making it fill the frame
Well done video, Alex. I really appreciate how quickly you got to the point. Thank you.
Thank you so much, that's exactly what I was looking for but didn't know how to write the question
Super helpful, thank you!
That helps a lot. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I have been trying to do this for almost a week and all the videos I found weren't helpful until this one. Great tutorial!
Thank you so much indeed for leaving this comment. I'm very happy to know that it helped you!
Great tutorial ... thx. I was not aware of timeline level setting for the crop.
Great Video! Thank you!
Thank you! You are a genius! Thank you for resetting the time line to a universal resolution then showing us how to ad a vertical one. It was exactly what I needed.
Ooh that’s a first for me! 😊 Genius? I’m not so sure but I’ll settle for knowing that the video helped you! 👍🏻 Thanks so much for your comment and watching the video.
Thanks so much for the help.
Very helpful, thanks
Well done !
Thanks Alex. That was extremely helpful!
You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching and then taking the time to comment.
LEGEND! Thank you!
thanks Alex, that was useful :)
Hi Alex, great tutorial! Question for you, if you had lower thirds text overlays is there an easy way to reframe it for vertical or do you have to reframe and scale it all manually in the vertical timeline?
Thank you very much, you just saved me a month worth of time.
Great to hear! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on the video!! 👍🏻
Hey Alex - the smart reframe is something that I completely forgot about. The idea of Resolve being able to keep a person in frame is an interesting concept that I had hoped could be used on any clip if zoomed in. I wish they would look into that functionality. I used to edit and grade concert footage and in some situations the camera or the lens is not enough to get close up work on the singers or instruments. So in the past to follow a singer I would do a lot of keyframing. And then to do it inside a multicam copy was even more difficult. So when I first say the smart reframing I thought that it might work on any clip ( I don't think it does ). Nice job on this one.
cheers.
Appreciate your support, feedback and comments as always, Jim. I've also found that whilst it does do a good job most of the time, Smart Reframe does sometimes need a little bit of finesse and is definitely something that I hope continues to improve. That old workflow, by the way sounds rather intense.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much
Perfect, Thank You
You're welcome!
Yo. is there a way to have the workspace work with vert videos? There's a lot of dead space on the sides of the video player, and it's very small. Any way to have it be longways on the side?
Thanks buddy ❤❤
Thanks for the great video tips, Alex. I have a problem that I can't find anyone else mentioning (either in your comments or on UA-cam in general). When I covert my timeline to vertical format, I lose the ability to pan my clips. It's like my clips are cropped and I don't have any data extending to the left or right of the frame. I've searched and searched to find a solution to this but am not even finding anyone mention this. Is this something you've ever experienced? Do you have any suggestions where I could look to "Resolve" this? (Sorry… couldn't resist) Thanks again!
It is great! Thank you! But it doesn't allow me to create 4K vertical videos. Which is sad.
Do you guys think they will put this feature in a new update?
Straightforward and to the point. Thanks
Hello Alex! Thank you for making this video. This is my first time using DaVinci Resolve so please bear with me a moment. I need some help regarding vertical video. I shot my videos vertically on a BMPCC OG, uploaded the footage into Resolve, but it is all coming out horizontal and each clip needs to be rotated somehow. Even when I create a new timeline with the vertical aspect ratio you suggested here, the video footage itself is horizontal. How do I fix this? Like I said I am a 100% complete newbie so will need careful instruction somehow. Unless you have a video you can direct me to. I'd really appreciate the assistance. this is a very intimidating program and quite frustrating as you can imagine. Thank you!
Thank you sir
thank you❤
You're welcome 😊
Nice, Thanks you
No problem! Appreciate you letting me know. 😁
thanks
Thanks Alex.
You're welcome. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Can you do vertical 4K with the free version? Or are limited to 1080p? Also, there is support for 1440p, right? Thanks.
Hi, This is a really nice feature but every time I try to use it, I can't add text as for some reason it add a big margin around the video and I can't have text larger than about half the width of it. It crop the text if larger. Any way to fix this?
Is worth to say that the vertical feature is limited to HD only for the Free version.
If you try to go Ultra HD - 4k, the checkbox will un-check itself when you click Save without a warning... wish they would just mention this.
Spent 2 hours installing and re-installing thinking is something wrong on my end... 🤢😮💨
Hi i face an issue my video is inserted into the timeline zoomed out creating a periphery of black space. And even if that doesnt happen upon insertion of my video into the timeline it occurs in rendering. Any idea why and how a may overcome this?
wish i could see playback on righ side of all windows, like it is possible in premiere pro
after doing all of these in edit page, the fusion page still shows it in horizontal resolution and its hard to work there.
How do we put the preview on the right side so that we have bigger view, its just absurd having vertical view in the middle of the screen when You can't use it.
Every time I check the vertical resolution box, the program automatically unchecks it on save. I'm only using one clip that is 2160x3840 and that's what's in my timeline. It does the same thing in the render settings. I cannot get it to set vertical resolution and I don't know why.
How can i open a video which i record in vertical?
het Alex , great video. I have a question. if the person of my video moves how I can follow him because the vertical mode cut the left and right parts.
thank you
Try the Smart Reframe option. It's pretty handy although not perfect.
It is Studio only though unfortunately so may not be possible if you're on the free version. If not, then you'll need to manually keyframe the position and zoom parameters in the Inspector.
Can you do vertical 4K videos? 2160 x 3840? It is not working on my DaVinci Resolve 18 :( how can I fix this?
Can you do 4k in vertical?
Hi Alex when you change your project settings in Image Scaling to set full frame with crop will that affect quality of videos shot vertically?
I'm putting my my Air 2S footage in this feature but am wondering if I can simply place my Sony A73 shot vertically on timeline too.
Good question. Might depend on a few things...What's your main project resolution and orientation? What is your source footage resolution and orientation? Is your main footage A73 or Air 2S? Generally scaling the image up is less desirable than scaling the image down. Always try to shoot in a higher quality/resolution and then come down depending on your deliverable. Resolve does a great job at scaling mismatched footage.
@@AlexCameron-Depiqd Hi my timeline would be 1080 x1920 and would be a mix of vertical Sony A73 and DJI Air2S changed to full frame with crop rather stretch it.
What about the mismatched setting for output? Should that be changed too? Thank you for the video.
No that shouldn't be necessary unless you want to deliver to a different resolution that your timeline.
Devenci a massive W fr
this is helpful except, I don't see the checkbox for the vertical resolution??
@alex I want to make a video tutorial for vertical video but I want to start with a full hd ratio 1920x1080. I then want to make a vertical frame that follows my cursor and keeps it roughly centered as it moves around the screen. If there a way to do this using tracking in Davinci?
Sounds great. If I understand correctly, I think that you'd be able to achieve this in Fusion relatively easily. You'll need to be able to understand key-framing as I don't know how else you might do it. You might be able to track your cursor and then apply that track data to the vertical frame mask. Does that help at all?
@@AlexCameron-Depiqd yes I'll give it a go and post the results ;)
Thanks
hey alex i recorded video on my iphone in vericle,
edited in reolve in verticle format.
exported to my pc.
but when i upload to facebook its the correct vertical format but its so tiny, dont fill up iphone screen on phone!
i cant figure out what combination of settings gets it to fill the whole screen on i phone.
your help will be greatly appricated
That sounds frustrating. Can you show me a screen grab of the way it looks on Facebook? I also wonder what render settings you used? Does the vertical video look correct on your pc before upload?
mine just wont it resets after i change it ive reset everything still wont
Wondering why the "Vertical Resolution" checkbox is still enabled when we select square aspect ratio :D
😂 I guess it’s because it’s still technically vertical (and horizontal too). Good spot though.
This only works for me with 1080p resolution, 4k vertical doesn't work for some reason
but what if you shot your footage in vertical aspect ratio ?
Would this work for a situation where we need to cut between vertical and "standard" frames? Cheers
If I understand you correctly, I don't think so. You wouldn't be able to shift between vertical or horizontal mid-video. Is that what you need to do? Let me know and I'll try and answer better. lol
@@AlexCameron-Depiqd well, what I was trying to say was cutting between them. For example, the "main" footage is standard, but someone sends you something they filmed as a vertical "reel" clip that they want inserted between segments of the main/primary footage. Cheers
Brother give tutorial ❤️❤️ davinci resolve app ipad pro 2022❤️
When I do this, my frame size doesn't change. It remains horizontal. I even updated to the latest version. I am working on Mac (M1). Please help.
Same here idk how people do it so it can fit.
it doesnt let me select the verticle aspect ratio...
Hey can you do this in 4k resolution? If not, why doesn’t it give you that option?
Select 4k then check vertical resolution box
Thanks! even though I needed the answer 8 months ago 😂
I wonder if davinci will ever auto cut clips to fit audio and cut it at every beat or kick.
The new grid has BPM settings - but an AI to analyse would be a welcome edition.
Thats dope bro

Cant get the use vertical resolution to work with 4k video?
I had the same issues and found out its an intended limitation of the free version, compared to the studio version of the software
@@eduontour same issue with paid version
I have problems in exporting in 4K vertical
Try FILE >> QUICK EXPORT (works for me)
Can you do 4k in vertical, it wont keep the settting when I change it.
apparently it is for premium users
@@CroPhantomX thanks for replying, I thought it might be. But of a shame but still a good package for free
Are you on the Free version of Resolve and are you meaning 4K DCI or UHD? UHD is possible in the Free version but not higher resolutions - vertical or portrait.
@@AlexCameron-Depiqd Free version, thanks for the response
It unchecks the vertical resolution every time I try to set it. Therefore I'm not able to save the project settings with vertical resolution. It sucks.
Are you using the Free version of Resolve by any chance? What vertical resolution are you trying to set it to?
@@AlexCameron-Depiqd Yes, free. I tried many resolutions. 4K, 2K and FullHD.
Bro can i edit 4k using vertical?
apparently it is for premium users
Can you explain how to do this on iPad
On ipad 😂 davinci is for desktop
@@3.dorfbewohnermaybe you didn’t know 😂 but it’s been on ipad for weeks now 🤣😇🙃🤯🤠
Its the exact same method. I just did this with a video on my ipad. Duplicate timeline, go to timeline settings, set to vertical, choose reframing option and save. Adjust clip framing as needed and you’re done.
It would be nice if those cropped left and right sides were transparent so that we can see what is hiding there...
is still not comfortable. They should make the workspace fully editable like in premier. So you can put viewer to the side for comfortable editing
Wow, so is not that easy thrn
