@J G why would you think a psychopath would be camping in a rest area? Those guys are riding around in the black and white cars, or running the corporations. The ones in the rest area, are the victims, the exploited and hopeless.
Bright red is actually a form of camouflage if it was a red pickup that was looking. Those guys don’t like you if you don’t have that essential aggressiveness.
Back in the early 1990s, I found a big black berry bush that grew up and around a tree. I got on my hands and knees and cut a tunnel into the black berry bush and hollowed out the inside. Then I put up my tent on the inside of the black berry bush. I then used camouflage netting to cover the entrance of the tunnel..then I tied briar stems and leaves to the netting with fishing line. One day there were people picking black berries off my black berry bush and never knew I was inside it.. even tho they were only ten feet from where I was, they couldn't see me. In the winter time the leaves would turn brown and fall, covering up the brown tarp that covered my tent..which meant I still couldn't be seen. I lived inside that black berry Bush for over a year. The company I worked for had a gym and shower facilities for their employees which was available 24/7..so staying clean was never a hassle. It was a 45 minute walk from my camp to work every day so I got plenty of excercise. Since I didnt have rent and bills to pay I saved $10,000 and bought a car then I moved into an apartment. Before I got that job I spent 5 years riding freight trains around the country so stealth camping was something I was use to. Lots of homeless people would get hassled by the cops but I never had any problems with the cops because they never found where I was.
These videos have been a weekly half hour of joy during a dark time for myself and a lot of others. Keep being you Steve. Nothing but love, keep camping friend!
Stealth camping isn't just about avoiding being forced off a property by the owners or authorities. It's also about not getting harassed by random people.
I was thinking he should have caught one of the locals in a snare and ate them for breakfast on the campfire. A meal is a meal, any "true survivor" would have taken that opportunity.
I love how this guy makes it sound like he's pulling off the greatest heist in human history when in reality... he's sitting behind a tarp in the forest, cooking beef and broccoli on a mini-stove.
yeah, i dont know what its like in canada but in the US at rest stops like these, if you see someone going into or coming out of the woods or walking around or whatever, it really isnt a big deal, you just let them do their thing and you do yours, he seems like he is afraid someones going to spot him, people are just passing through they really wont care
It always feels that way when you're doing something you're not "supposed" to be doing, but in reality, everybody is generally involved in their own lives they aren't paying attention to you. Especially travelers just trying to get to their destination.
@@jamisonsmith5216 Yea. That's how most people want to live. . . . out in the middle of the mosquito, tick infested woods sleeping in a tarp and eating a year's supply of broccoli for supper. mmm hmmm
2 years later and this video still pops up on about every other stealth camp video. Ironically enough, this is the video that turned me to the channel and I'm glad I did. Whether it's a stealther or you're just hunkering down for the night somewhere, I know it's gonna be a great video when your name pops up! Keep up the great vids Steve!
Steve has been camping on the side of the road, in the middle of the road, and even under the road. Now all that's left is to go camping above the road somehow. Perhaps up in the rafters of a suspension bridge
I was on my motorcycle a couple years back. I don't like to ride after dark and was really, really beat. Pulled off to an interstate highway rest stop, crawled up on a table that had a small roof over it, put down my air mattress and sleeping bag on a picnic table... was asleep in moments. Several hours later, someone was taping on my foot with a night stick. State Cop.. "You can't camp here." I replied, "I'm not camping, I'm sleeping." A few minutes later he came back and tapped my foot again, I sat up and asked, "how many of those cars parked along the curb have people sleeping in them?" He replied, "Most of them, but that's different". I said "it sure is, because I can't stretch out on my motorcycle seat." He left, I went back to sleep.
Rest areas are just for that. To take a break, rest or nap if needed. I’d rather some have to sleep at a rest area then fall asleep behind the wheel and kill someone.
Seriously! How? Woulda been pretty easy for him to ask if the guy had a vehicle, rather than incorrectly assuming he was camping. What happened to “innocent until proven guilty?”
I mean look at it this way. Since I've started to watch this channel I've learned ALOT. If by some chance, (hope it never happens) i get homeless and need to stealth camp, this man has taught me everything i need to survive. Steve you're a legend. And i appreciate you. I’ve herd people saw they tried to go camping and couldn’t figure it out (other Canucks)! How can you not know how to do the simplest way of living? Shit cracks me up kinda
I have been houseless for 3 years(have a good paying job) had to do this when money wasn't all there or didn't need to spend 70 bucks for hotel. It truly is an art. If you haven't done this you have to try it. peaceful and exhilarating.
@@CANControlGRAFFITI o understand where you're coming from. Its just simplicity. But the art of you not getting caught, and cooking a nice great meal, and having the step 2's is the art of living. If/when Orwellian society takes over, Steve will still be there in the hidden corners drinking beer, eating quick camping meals and filming UA-cam videos.
Steve actually seems to be the perfect example of enjoying nature WITHOUT banking on total societal collapse to validate one's insecurities. Steve, as soon as I saw the title, I knew it would be great. Stealth is a lost art. I really liked this episode Steve. Show us the way to urban survive. Thank you Steve.
Yeah. Not sure if he’s trying to build suspense or what. He also acts as if getting caught is going to get him 20 years hard labor. I think the reality would be somewhere between “move along sir” and a $1000 fine. With the typical being at or near a move along sir.
@@jeromewink557 I've thought about it too and I assume it's a mixture of both. Wagering that Steve is a bit on the anxious side as a person, but it'd be stupid of him not to play it up a bit. good. Now you have an idea what it is like to be hyper-vigilant. Now if you could just get used to being mugged for your can of sardines, you'll appreciate it from the other side.
"The creepiness factor's up there versus, you know, the good wholesome family over there..." ... I relate to this comment sooooo much. I spent nearly a year homeless, and probably the most frustrating thing was to get hassled about loitering based solely on appearance, while the well-dressed folk could loiter to their heart's content disturbing everything and everyone and leaving a trail of trash in their wake. I never disturbed anything or anyone and always left things exactly how I found it, yet I was the "troublemaker" just for looking downtrodden.
Majority of homeless around my area completely destroy the areas they occupy. I'm sure there are those who don't but they're outnumbered by those who do.
@@Billy28376 So true because most of the homeless got that way through drugs and drinking. People who care so little about themselves to become like that will care even less about anyone or anything else. But it is truly sad that the biggest segment of homeless growth is now people and families who lost everything through no real fault of their own, and not all of them were initially poor before then.
@@Billy28376 so true, same in my area. The hotspots where they "camp" look like mini landfills in between the times of the DOT stopping and cleaning it up. Also i dont know if this is a thing everywhere, but here, and im in the south so theres alot of churches, its a thing for these guys to set up in a patch of woods close to the really big/mega churches here, kinda wierd, like 4 of em in my town alone that have neighboring "homeless" hotspots
Amazes me how sneaky and stealthy he has to be around people, here in California you can walk right into any wooded area throughout the city and nobody will even bother doing anything about it
Highway rest areas being day use only is absurd. If someone gets tired on a long road trip, I'd rather they pull in and sleep than doze off behind the wheel and kill somebody.
That’s what I’ve never understood. There are government campaigns telling drivers to pull over and not drive if they are tired. But you’re also not allowed to sleep, even in your car, on the side of the road or day-use rest stop. Overnight rest stops for truckers are few and far between on roads that normal commuters wouldn’t take. It’s confounding!
I live in Arkansas. Being such a crossroads state, the amount of truck traffic is insane. A few years ago a law was passed that prohibited truckers from pulling to the side of on-ramps and sleeping. It was perfectly safe. Most drivers did it in pretty rural areas. A lot better than sleepy guys behind the wheel of a forty-ton machine.
In Australia there are strict regulations for truckies relating to hours worked (cumulatively) & the amount of rest they must have consequently, there are designated locations for them to rest in. They do have a problem with Grey Nomads occupying those sites so the truckies are asking for policing of the improper use of the truck stops, especially since there are rest stops for other drivers. In NSW (where I live) you are considered to be managing fatigue if you keep your caravan hitched to your tow vehicle. Howev, should you separate the 2, you are considered to be camping & if seen by the Police you risk a fine & being moved on. There is a large number of free camps available where you may stay for up to 72 hours before being required to move on though, that might not be inforced if you do not misbehave.
Steve it’s been a troubling time in my life and I hope you see this comment but thank you for what your videos are doing to me right now In my life. Thank you and keep on doing your thing man. From California
By far my best moments i look out for when camping with Steve are the fabulous noises he makes after he tastes his first bite of his camped cooked dinner. No matter how burnt it turns out the reaction is pretty much the same. The moment he takes the first bite I wait expectantly to hear what comes next. Here it goes: Mmm. Yeah...mmm, not too bad... Mmm, better than j thought.... Its alm about his optimism and that life is always great.

@@FeldwebelWolfenstool Better yet stealth camping in the Cantire outdoor garden section. But come on its not camping with Steve if hes not smuggling Alchyhol and one pot cooking.
I was on a motorcycle trip around the US last year, and found myself without a campground after dark. Pulled into a rest area, and was going to try sleeping on picnic table bench, but found it most uncomfortable. I looked at the full parking lot and realized that truckers and RV owners can just pull in, crawl in the back, and go to sleep. Automobile drivers can just recline the seats and go to sleep. So what is a biker to do? I just set up my tent in the nice grassy area in the picnic area, crawled in my sleeping, and went to sleep. No stealth, just common sense. After all, it is a REST area.
I think generally poeple don't mind if your just sleeping for the night and are off again in the morning. In Australia its super common to just pullover to the side of the highway or rest areas, start a camp fire and set up a tent. Police will drive past and not care. If they see that you've been there there for a week or so they will probably boot you off though.

Warmest greetings from Britain. Thank you, for sharing what you do. I'm an old, long distance walker; cooped up for a while here but soon to be back on the trail. I know that look you often get in your eyes so well. I have the same look in my own. I know how it feels to be behind the eyes that look out that way. Thousands of days and nights, trying to live free in a stolen world. Leaving no trace where my hammock camp hung, while picking my way through a landscape fouled by those who would try to forbid me. Those who say: "You have no rights" It gets better, the further you go from roads; I'm sure you know. Happy trails, God bless

I was talking with my friends and said that the tarmac is a bit hard to walk on, and that Im running out of like public walks in nearby forests, and one of my buddies asks why dont I just walk straight into a forest instead. I was like, I cant do that, what will that look like if wander accidentally onto ppls property or who knows where? The same day I did though and It was great.
I used to stealth camp while I was bike touring in college. Towards the end of my day of riding, I’d look for a store, and then I’d look for a likely place to set up for the night. Found some lovely places, never left a mess and nobody bothered me. In fact, the only time I asked permission to camp, I was beaten up in my tent! If they don’t know you’re there they won’t mess with you!
Sorry about that. You caught me off guard and I thought you were an alien and the tent was the mothership and that you were going to rectally insert a prove in my body to monitor my movements and I was off my meds. Sorry...honest mistake, but you can see how one would think that.
KRH Colorado No, I actually asked if I could camp on the property and was given permission. Later, when dawn was breaking, I heard snickering then someone jumped on my tent and started beating my head. When he said he was going to cut my head off, I made a desperate struggle. Luckily, I pitched the tent next to a rail fence and as I rolled he couldn’t stay on me and the tent ripped. I got out and saw him running away. Great way to wake up!

Enjoyed the vid but have to say. I cracked up laughing when u pulled out the brightest red sleeping bag ever while ur trying to be stealthy
Gotta challenge yourself
Bright red is actually a form of camouflage if it was a red pickup that was looking. Those guys don’t like you if you don’t have that essential aggressiveness.
I loved the jack Daniel’s bit... guess you needed it :)
Have you not seen his yellow one??
Well, the hammock / tarp would cover it, so not too big of a deal. 😁
Next time I’m at a rest stop I’m going to assume there is a 50/50 chance Steve is watching me from the woods.

Steve needs to do one episode that’s anti-stealth, just to see how far he can push it. I bet he’d be surprised by how little resistance he’d get.
So like, he puts up a strobe light in the woods and maybe honks an air horn once an hour?
😂😂😂
They set up by the train tracks, or right in front of Walmart. Under overpasses. Any stretch of woods.
I think it's cool - show how you can be outside the system and be comfortable and live the way you want.
yeah, i dont know what its like in canada but in the US at rest stops like these, if you see someone going into or coming out of the woods or walking around or whatever, it really isnt a big deal, you just let them do their thing and you do yours, he seems like he is afraid someones going to spot him, people are just passing through they really wont care
It always feels that way when you're doing something you're not "supposed" to be doing, but in reality, everybody is generally involved in their own lives they aren't paying attention to you. Especially travelers just trying to get to their destination.

@@Billy28376 So true because most of the homeless got that way through drugs and drinking.
I'll second the common sense here! Live and let live, as long as people leave it like they found it or better, its not hurting anyone!
No one enforces it. And its only in some states due to insurance reasons. They dont want accept liability for not having security.
Steve walking in bathroom, declares this is a real treat, followed by a groan that we all know. Most hilarious clip ever.

What sort of distance is "long distance"?
I used to stealth camp while I was bike touring in college. Towards the end of my day of riding, I’d look for a store, and then I’d look for a likely place to set up for the night. Found some lovely places, never left a mess and nobody bothered me. In fact, the only time I asked permission to camp, I was beaten up in my tent! If they don’t know you’re there they won’t mess with you!
Wtf
Worked for hitchhiking across the country back in the 70s. Was always fearful after dark but made it ok.
Sorry about that. You caught me off guard and I thought you were an alien and the tent was the mothership and that you were going to rectally insert a prove in my body to monitor my movements and I was off my meds. Sorry...honest mistake, but you can see how one would think that.
If you were in your tent I assume you asked for forgiveness rather than permission?
KRH Colorado
No, I actually asked if I could camp on the property and was given permission.

@@eliomarlinares5459 think it's a good one, huh? Yeah, I think it would work.
People would offer to help look for it.
@@TheWestlandgirl possibly......but it is the most logical reason to go into a wooded area without being suspicious .. Yeah, there might be one or two good Samaritans offering to help.....but I would say to them....."oh that's ok he always comes back."
Only problem is that its canada.. people are likely to offer to help😂
I like the “white noise” of the stealth camping. You’ll sleep like a baby. Skillet
Lol, I just posted how I wouldn't be able to sleep with that racket.
I pretend the noise is the ocean waves, I fall asleep quickly!
LOL! Calling that white noise is being awfully generous! It's noisy as fuck no sleeping there till way late at night if your lucky!

When I moved from Co, to Fl, I stayed the night at one of them rest stops and since I had all my worldly possessions in the back of the truck I just ripped out my sleeping bag and slept on top of the stuff beverly hillbillies style! under the stars, beautiful night too.

First camping with Steve I ever watched year's ago. 😊
Steve acts like if police roll up on him they’re gonna arrest him and take him to interrogation and torture him until he tells them who he’s working for lmao.
yea xd love it
You never know!! Steve could be a spy for the alien invaders, sent here to scope us out before the main fleet arrives!! TELL US STEVE, WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR? ;)
If he was in the usa they would because he isnt destroying and looting anything.
that's how i feel when he does all this stealth camping
They would in the UK
Steve: “I don’t know why camping is so frowned upon.”
...
Also Steve: “The woods here are pretty clean because no one camps here.”
People tend to not pack things out regardless of the rules.
PoXAzraelis Yup, the question answers itself. Steve even answers it himself, which is why it’s odd he can’t figure it out.
@@shielasimpleton7346 sarcasm. We Steve's are not dumb.
@Stephen Pushak But there was no sarcasm in his voice.
Yep. Sometimes the rules against a thing are just so that when people do break the rule they're careful enough about it to not get caught.
Blurring out the brand name on the “Uncle Ben’s” rice package. Totally Hilarious ! 🤣👍👍
And the turd! Lmao!
But he bought it
Trim the beard. All I get is a fu man church like joe dirt so relish your beard that actually grows
How do you know it's Uncle Ben's? All I saw was a package of UB's. You sure it wasn't a package of underwear briefs? Lol

I've car camped in rest areas across the country like a lot of people but never did this. One thing I noticed is that the rest areas closest to the state line are usually the nicest, perhaps to give a good first impression of the state to people.
Everyone is clowning on him for being paranoid but to me, just seems like experience. Always gotta have a story ready for if you DO get caught or someone comes nosing around. Having one prepared ahead of time has gotten me out of many jams lol
That's right, if you've ever been a hobo you know the feeling of watching out for everything around you.
Exactly, good life advice, I am always prepared with a good story when doing things like this. I camped all over Washington, Oregon, and California and sometimes a rest stop is the only good place around that is free.
