- Build 8102.101 was the offical Milestone 3 build handed out at the 2011 Microsoft Build conference to developers. It included a range of test applications and games not included in the final version of Windows 8 that Diana just couldn't resist checking out. So be sure to watch this content filled episode to the end to see all the crazy included apps she tries out.
Also, I think I prefer the look of this build to the final build of Windows 8 in 2012. Tell me what you guys think! :)

Walk Home - Solar (from about 2 minutes in)
Hey everyone, I hope you all enjoy this crazy episode! Remember that OSFirstTimer episodes will now come out weekly rather than every 3 days from this point on. Plenty more fun episodes on the way :)
Haven't watched it yet but only from the intro I can see that this will be my favorite one so far!!
@@zonimc It was a pretty wild episode, starts off a bit slow but ramps up later on :)
That being said, its a bit of a long episode :P
Speaking of the schedule, what day and time is this new schedule?
@@Everything.Windows Exactly 7 days from the release of this video right now. So this video was released 8am Tuesday Sydney time, the next video will also be released 8am tuesday sydney time ;)

Philip in a later video: alright so for example if we tell it to generate, say... a wheel made out of-
Diana: *opens match 5*
Haha, Match 5 becomes a new Meme :P
Diana will find VMware Workstation and fire up the Windows 8 Developer Preview just to open the game lol
Phil: talks to distract someone
Diana: goes violent to distract someone (not that violent but still)
I got her back though when it was her turn again :P
Well this is quite a blast from the past.
As one of the 8 people in the world who LOVE Windows 8, I remember using the Dev, Consumer and Release previews AND watching that 1st OSFT video; this is nostalgia times 3 lol
Wow, you've been around on the channel since the first video :D Thanks for sticking around :)
I liked Windows 8 as well, it was so exciting and fresh
I liked it too, last good version of Windows IMO. Metro UI was so slick and I didn't have a problem with the start screen
I actually prefer the dev preview over the final release of 8. I don't know, there's something about the UI that just makes me cling towards this one better. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it had a start button, and the charms only activated when hovering over that button as opposed to the Consumer Preview and up where the start button was completely moved to the charms bar, stupidly hidden at the right hand side and it pops out for no reason even when you're not close to the edge of the screen.
@@winelectronic101 I think I prefer the green background too, it was more appealing than the purplish background the final came with.
You guys really went back to your roots lmao
I love Diana's obsession with the game! 😅
Also, it's a great idea to have a deal where you show us other apps upon losing. That way, Diana still gets a chance to play, adding some extra thrill, and we get to see more without the video getting too stale. Nice!
Yeah, I liked that idea of each app is a life etc, but diana HATED it :P
1:34 thank you for giving me moments that I will last for forever. There’s one in an old video that you did for Algodoo where the ball just bounced on the there and this made me laugh forever. This is one of them as well.
Haha, yeah she was on such alert for pranks due to filming the Windows XP 19.914 video she thought this might have been another prank :P
Nice to see Wall Street again :D
The next preview (Consumer Preview) used to be the OS that I would use for the longest time on my very old Pentium machine with 512MB of RAM.
Windows 8 was so much more optimized, especially in terms of memory footprint (since they had to run it on weaker ARM32 tablets), that it actually improved performance over Windows 7 on the same machine.
Ah yeah, I guess that's a good point about one of the Windows 8 benefits.
Wow
I subbed to this channel like, 10+ years ago on an old account that got hacked
It just came across my feed and I’m so delighted to see you still going and your mom still doing well 💙
Edit: I forget it’s 2025 😭
She got ptsd from windows 8 😂
Remember guys: Thousands of employees designed and coded this and dozens of board members approved this. All of them decided this would be the future of Windows and none of them saw anything wrong with it (either that or they were too afraid to speak up).
Yeah, almost like they thought "better just agree with everyone so we don't get fired".
Someone even stated on YCombinator that since the Windows 8 era, Microsoft even hire designers who have no Windows experience.
1:27 This was released to the public, the name being Developer Preview is to say that it's a pre beta build. Consumer Preview is the Beta and Release Preview is the Release Candidate.
5:08 There is a start button if you put your mouse directly into the bottom left corner it says start, i dont know why microsoft did that, it feels like they moved the icon prior to the Windows 8 Consumer Preview and just never fixed it till windows 8.1
I think they removed the Start button to reflect their view that the desktop was an "app" its self, and not the primary interface to the operating system.
Which is odd considering that people would spend more time in the desktop with excel, file browers, etc as opposed to the start screen 🤔
Amazing video as always, was so funny seeing you distract each other! However, through the screen I did feel Diana's annoyance in the beginning after she was just started getting interested in the "5 in a row" game and was forced to stop playing. Afterwards, it seemed like she was mostly just waiting to play that game and wasn't being as enthusiastic about some of the other software as opposed to if she had a relaxed mind (especially seeing how she was always looking to open it). :)
I felt that too, but, that being said... Imagine if I let her continue playing 5 in a row right at the start of the video. She would have never beat it and then all this other content would have been missed and she would be frustrated and exhausted from that game she would have no energy or enthusiasm left for the other games etc. It's sort of this tricky balancing act and in the end, the focus on always wanting to come back to 5 in a row became a bit of a meme throughout the video :)
@@OsFirstTimer True! Maybe a possible other way to do it is to let her try the games you know she'd be interested in at the end, but at the end of the day it's all fun and memes and this is your content, so you know what's best to do :)
If you come across games like this on future OSs to try you could deinstall it. Diana doesn’t need to know it was there. 😊
HAHAHA the sneaky restart while you were looking at ballerinas was funny
I know right? Anything to get another go of 5 in a row :P
even when away victor never sleeps on osft
The OSFT comments must continue despite my holiday :)
Phil: "You know what would suck? If there was a blanket on your head"
*puts blanket on Diana's head*
Phil: "there we go"
Aw, that's both cute and hilarious how you two were distracting each other while competing in the word game. 🥺
Why do I feel like at times, mentally, Diana is Phil’s daughter 😂
This was the very first Windows 8 beta build I knew. I remember at one point I thought that this was the real RTM Windows 8. I'll admit that Windows 8 is so good on touch screens bc I use it on my Surface Pro and it's very good. The tiles make sense for a touch surface.
That's correct, it was great on a Surface Pro etc (I run it on my own surface pro 1/3 back in the day). Not a fan using it with a mouse though, but I do agree it's nice on a touch screen :)
@ that’s good to hear. Agreed
I wonder why they didn’t do dedicated versions of Windows 8 for touch screens and for desk tops. Would have made much more sense 🤷
Diana's face upon initially hearing the astronaut's farting sound effect is something. 😁
i love how every past episode has had a running joke about her wanting to play the bundled in games
The real sin is not running this on her old Alienware
I believe the old alienware laptop was sold a while back now. It was Jasmine's laptop after Diana upgraded then the battery completly died.
This episode brought back some great noatalgia, and it was compensated by Diana's obsession with the games 😂
Lesson learned, never let Diana play any games before the end of the episode
Haha, true :P
The Labyrinth app was so aesthetically pleasing and soothing with its accompanying sound. It's a shame it wasn't included.
And I'M currently learning The Entertainer on piano.. that actually spooked me for a second :P lol
Oh wow, I can imagine that would be like some kind of crazy inception, like am I dreaming right now? Haha :D
Y'all absolutely tried to decimate each other in that word puzzle game
i find it quite interesting how microsoft managed to get the metro design style into all of their games as well as normal apps.
Ah yes. You can also restore the Windows 7 start menu in this build because of RedPill
Diana's being very mischievous today lol 😂
Wow, the official Developer buid of Windows 8, trip down a beta build, ay? Also, Reversi lol
Out of all the builds of Windows 8, somthing about this one just popped out. I actually think it's overall feel is a slight step up from the final release of Windows 8.
oh lol, it's five-in-a-row, not reversi, my bad
@@OsFirstTimer Y'know, if it wasn't for the fact applications are literally non-existent, it would be interesting for Diana to try a *Redpilled* 7973.
Pro tip: Try the gesture used to close Metro applications in Consumer Preview and onwards but specifically on Build 7973's Start Screen.
27:13 Diana Bieber
after 13 years a windows 8.0 video
@OSDailyTimer Diana distracting Phil (and vice versa) has to be a certified very funny moment 🤣
Only made it to certified "pretty funny", lol, not funny enough for OSDailyTimer :P
Microsoft really should package that 5-in-a-row game with Windows 11
Imagine watching 23:53 out of context 🤣🤣
that games real name is gomoku, growing up in central europe it was my favorite game and played it a lot
YES IM EARLY! Ive never been early to one of these videos!
In this video:
5 in a Row was opened *16* times.
Diana started *21* games of 5 in a Row.
Out of those 21 games, Diana lost *21* of them.
Quite *ridiculous* .
Lol, yeah, a bit of a failure there :P
Imagine if you have counted all the times I failed!
@@OSDailyTimer Lol, uncountable :P
@@OsFirstTimer it’s so stupid. It’s ridiculous.
@ Haha, you added in the song reference :P
The part where Philip and Diana were messing with each other was Certified Pretty Funny (Trademarked) and Challenge Accepted!
Wait, challenge? This was filmed so long ago I forgot what the challenge was? Was it... you beating 5 in a row :O That's tough!
2012 Mum tries out Windows 8
Phil: Do you know what os you are using?
Diana: I don't Know Windoows 7 (frustrated)
Phil: You don't even know??
Diana: Vista
That old part was funny oh and am moving to Australia in a year Bc of you but in sydneyyyyy
Heh, such a long time ago when Diana couldn't identify what she was using. Diana knows her operating systems now :P
This reminds me of the piano in garage have from the Mac OS Sierra video...
YAYY ITS WINDOWS 8 AGAIN YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I love windows 8
idk something tells me she wants to play match 5
can't put my finger on it
:p
Memories
Honestly I'd watch a livestream of Diana playing Five In A Row until she beats it :P
woah back even earlier than the beginning
I kinda want to download this just for five in a row :/
We've come full circle...
Day idk of asking politely to have her try out „Windows 9“, based on Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Pro, looking like Win 7 to have her guess what OS she is using :)
Jazzy tries windows 7
You know what I’m gonna try and beat 5 in a row
33:58 i never knew they made Tinker 2!!
no philip
why do you let mum play more games
next shes gonna discover suika game and play until she dies
16:48 oh my god it’s like Microsoft puzzle it
diana on windows 8 in 2025... the world is saved
How about whenever you have Diana try out a new OS, you have her complete the 5 tasks first, and then you introduce her to the games within the system. If that section alone goes on for a long time, then you can release that as a video in itself (an addition to the main video).
Generally we try to do an "explore the os yourself" at the end of the videos which sometimes results in games, unless the os took too long to test.
@@OsFirstTimer You can do that, but for this episode the games were stuffed all over the video. This made it seem disorganized and hard to follow along.
Can I suggest a video idea?
At this point leave the games at the end for her 😂😂
25:31 "Zeor"?! "Roee"?! "Wora"?! "Jeoe"?! "Xeor"?! "Rero?!" Seriously, Phil?
Diana was super distracting :P
WORDAMENT WAS MY LIFE.
Can diana try out a build of windows blue (codename of 8.1)
We need a Diana gaming channel plz
Don't worry, every 4th OSFT video from now on will be a gaming video. The schedule is:
1. Operating System (this video)
2. Software
3. AI
4. Game
The cycle repeats :)
Can i request a new episode?
Nice
That 5 in a row game is called othello. I have the board of it haha
Oh that game! I remember that from game with rabbit
At least you're versing humans when you play it, this computer is TOUGH! :P
I haven't heard that name in a long time...
If you like you like os first timer
Windows 8 reminds me of macOS lol. They’re both as confusing as each other and just expect you to know everything already.
Yay

We do operating systems, software, AI and games so there is plenty of variety.
Before OSDT
Windows 8 is back yaaaaay lol
If anyone ports Match 5 to linux, it's all over!!!
Full circle.
3 min damn
I use Windows 7 lol.
Ok
A hour late but bosdt
Windows8.1 was fine 8 was bad!
It looks cartoonish!
i genuinely think that windows 8 (particularly 8.1) is an overhated os and is actually pretty good, a lot better than windows 10 and 11
You mean underrated?
Of the 3, Windows 8 is my least fav, windows 10 is in the middle and windows 11 is my favourite. Windows 7 though it still my overall favourite OS from Microsoft, followed by XP followed by Vista. Out of interest, what is it about Windows 8 that you feel makes it better than Windows 10 and 11. I'm interested to hear your opinion :)
@@OsFirstTimer I know I'm not the original commenter, but, yes, his opinion resonates with me. Windows 8 was, though heavily criticized, a pretty solid operating system for its time. It looked new and modern, and I reckon the main reason for all its criticism was people were not used to change.
Reminds me of the first ever OSFT video where Diana was trying out Win8. Remember how she said it was like wall street; all childish and unintuitive? I remember another video, couldn't name it though lol - where she said she didn't mind Windows 8, and after a bit of learning it was usable.
I really dislike Windows 11 personally. It's not unconscious bias or anything of that nature, I just feel like its performance is significantly worse than that of Windows 10, even version 22H2. I personally still use Windows 10 1507, build 10240 on my PC as of 2025 as it is lightning fast compared to any operating system.
Ever since the debut of the Win10 November Update, I've just grown to like Windows less and less, it's turning from a solid platform to an ad-ridden money-making machine for Microsoft, and with that, performance and stability has plummeted.
@@anianiii meant overhated 😭
@@OsFirstTimer in my opinion, windows 8.1 is the last of the microsoft oses without bloat. it boots up really fast in comparison to windows 10 with same specs. the start menu isn’t that bad, its definitely a weird change in windows. if windows 8 released as windows 8.1 (plus another additional stuff regarding the ui changes), it would definitely be more successful.
Microsoft mis-understood thinking everyone switching from desktop PCs to tablets and touch screen devices. Windows 8 was a disaster. They took Windows 7's beautiful aero glass away and made Windows flat and ugly
If they never did that though, OSFirstTimer would never have existed. The whole channel started as a jab at Windows 8 when it first released to show how bad it was and the channel evolved from there.
The font in the thumbnail reminds me of Cooper Black, is it that? Because it reminded me of 2009-2011 era Tyler, The Creator when he used that font for his album art, and also, when he used it for Odd Future (but that’s me just ranting about Tyler)
Yep, that's the font I like to use, you did well noticing the font, I certainly can't recognise fonts on sight like that.
