Some tips from one of the devs of FAF (shoutout to you, Rowey!) - Only use Economic Overlay when you're stalling so the information doesn't clutter your screen - Hydo costs the same as two T1 p-gens for the output of five T1's - T3 mex should always come after a T3 power generator. Thanks for watching!
A few (hopefully helpful) additions / advice for new players: 1) Automate your power in 1 step A good simple rule for new players is, after the first factory or so, have 1-2 engineers build T1 power generators in a looong line, until you get your first T2 power generator eventually. Small map = 1 Engineer, bigger Map = 2 Engineers. Not exact, but should keep new players up with their power without wasting too much, putting them way ahead their opponents already. 2) Don't spam Energy storages At some point, a new player learns about Energy storages improving adjacent power production, then continue to spam early game aloooot of them. They are actually quite expensive and the bonus is neglectible at best. Build a single one for your Commander Overcharge ability early, then only add if you really need. 3) Expanding is the name of the game Another really important lesson for new players is: Expand! T1 Mass extractors cost nearly nothing and produce free mass. Don't sit in your base and upgrade early to Tech 2, just to get "to more efficient T2 power generators". It takes forever without proper income and then all your power does nothing without mass. New players tend then to reply with "Well, then I will also upgrade my T2 mass extractors"... and after 10minutes have only 5% of the economy of their opponents. You can't fix ineffiency with more ineffiency. You need all that free mass income from the map. For 99% of the maps: Don't upgrade anything before you have all your nearby/side of the map mass extractors under control. Feel free to hit me up in FAF and ask any question. I'll be happy to check out your replays to give some help as best I can.
hey man, i'm trying to get into the game but i suck so much i lose against normal ai. Would you be willing to spectate a match and give me some much needed advice?
Nice vid, I originally played the game in the 2000's when it came out and played sporadically with friends against sorian AI over the years but playing online has revealed how terrible I am against others people and am always learning new stuff. Great vid.
Just came back after few years and I am really surprise, that the FAF comunity is still so active! It is the GOAT between RTS. And I am much more medieval fan, than sci-fi, but nothing can compare to this old great game!
Adjacency is pretty important - there are lots of bonuses throughout the game for it. The obvious one is T3 air (which uses a lot of power) being substantially reduced by being adjacent to T3 power, and factories needing reduced mass to build things if they're adjacent to a mass extractor, but less obvious is things like T2 and T3 artillery (which use power to fire) taking less power and recharging faster if a ring of power generators is built around it. And, yeah, I used to get carried away with building heaps of power storage, but it's almost always worthless after one or two - you're far better building more power generators. And the worst habit I've seen is people ringing a hydrocarbon with power storage - not only is the cost of the storage far greater than the increased power generation you get, but a single T1 bomber will take that out and (because power storage is volatile) blow up your hydrocarbon and all the other power storage and quite possibly other attached bits of your base. Only put one or two power storage down. Always weigh up the upgrade to T2 mexes vs the tanks you could build with that mass at that point in time. When upgrading mexes, always upgrade one at a time, and get a team of engineers to assist the upgrade. Do not upgrade mexes if you are already stalling for mass; and if you really have to you should pause everything else. Remember, like all building things you can pause mex upgrades - in fact, one of the tricks that some people use (and it's automated in a mod somewhere) is to double-click your lowest mex so all mexes of that tech level are selected then start them all upgrading and then IMMEDIATELY pause them all. Then unpause one mex, upgrade it, and continue. That way you know which mexes still need to be upgraded. If you don't like this doing this, there's a hotkey for 'find nearest lowest-tech mex' - I have it bound to ctrl-M - then I can do ctrl-M to select and M to start it upgrading.
How do you get the hot key labels and remapping? Hardest thing for me playing this game for the first time in like a decade and coming from AOE is lack of good hotkeys.
@@TheGreenSquier awesome, just watched it now, thanks! Haha like I said, I played this game ages ago on release but lost the old CD. Got very nostalgic watching some Gyle videos and so bought it again.
Instead of telling what everyone knows, how about some tips and tricks? When to upgrade to tech 2 or 3? any tips on how to build an army while also upscling? how about a gameplay video, of you actually battling someone, and then adding your thoughts after that. By what minute should i have a tech 3 Mex? What do the pros have by that time? this is basic tutorial stuff, that everyone who played the game already figured out after about 20 minutes.
The absolute beginner is actually what I was going for with this series. I have lots of tips & tricks videos for people that know the game better, but in my experience, it’s not that easy to learn the essentials

Thanks man very helpful, I just started playing this game and had no idea what I was doing with the economy.
Nice Telecaster :D
Thanks! It was my first guitar... a green one made by Squier.
Is my channel art starting to look familiar? ;)
Lol love it. I started on a squire strat. I play mostly heavy stuff now though so picked up a Schecter and a les paul.
Have you heard of FAF? Your tutorials could get more viewers if we put it on the newshub!
Definitely! I meant to mention it in the video (whoops), I'll make sure to remember in the next one!
@@TheGreenSquier its less about you mentioning it and more like you joining the community so we can help put your videos on the client news section
you could also talk about ras spam for the late game
