What can you do if the 12 o-clock position is still not hot enough? Before I installed this new unit it was fine, but now the water temps still don't get as high as needed with the water traveling 2+ stories. Can the limiter be moved further counter clockwise to achieve this? Thanks!
Hi Eric! No 12 o’clock is the maximum position. 1- double check that you installed the cartridge the correct way where at the 6 o’clock position it off and then as you turn it counterclockwise it starts with cold, gets warmer, to hot. The reason I say this is because I’ve seen where people install the cartridge 180° backwards, or the handle was not installed correctly which can effect how hot of water you get. 2- If all of that is correct then the next step would be to turn up the temperature at your hot water heater. That would be the only other thing that you could do to increase the temperature, which will increase the temperature at all of your plumbing fixtures.
Eric Millington thank you! Typically the plumbing code states the hot water cant exceed 115 degrees, which is usually not hot enough for most people. Glad the video helped.
Ours wont get enough cold water, and when you turn to lowest setting it actually gets a tiny warmer. I appreciate the video and will try looking at that gear piece.
Keith it sounds like the black mounting piece is upside down and you have to turn the stem 180° and then reinstall it, or you may actually have a failed cartridge and you’ll have to replace it with a new one. You can go to any Home improvement store and buy a new one for $40. Naturally, be sure to turn the water off to the house before you pull that cartridge out. I don’t personally have a video walking you through how to replace that cartridge, however I’m sure somebody on UA-cam has made one. Let me know how it goes?
Yes, that happened to me. After setting the ring at 12 o’clock the water never got any hotter even though the sink next to it did. I will replace the cartridge even though it only 3 years old.
@@laredokarl You mentioned the house is three years old. Did the water ever get really hot like the sink next to it, or did you just start noticing recently that it wasn’t getting as hot as it was before?
Great video. Unfortunately mine was at 12 o’clock ready. Master bath works great but guest bath has lukewarm Shower . Is it the shower mix valve or something else ? The guest bath is never used for 9 years and has always had this issue .
Hi Carol- More than likely it’s either the cartridge and handle are not installed correctly, or the cartridge needs to be replaced. I would just make it easy and replace the cartridge by following my instructions in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ITVyo8lsVO0/v-deo.html
@@BJPoznecki thank u! Looks easy but I’ve heard if cartridge has been there awhile (mine 14years) that it can break trying to remove the old one? Is this true ?
@@carolanne7869 For this type of shower valve it should be a plastic cartridge, however anything can happen, so if you’re not comfortable it’s always best to have a handyman or plumber do the job.
I have a Moen 1222 just replaced the cartridge but there is no adjustment piece and the water is still just lukewarm.. the sink gets scalding hot and so does every where else in my house. Is it just a bad mixing valve?
The black mounting piece the handle attaches to may be upside down and you have flip it around 180° and put everything back together. Or, the cartridge may be in upside down you’ll have to turn the water off to the house. Take the cartridge back out, rotate it 180°, and reinsert it.
Greetings! I followed your video to adjust the hot, worked perfectly. However, the coldest cold remains at 20c/68f which is not cold enough for me. The water in my kitchen and bathroom sinks would freeze you, I wanted to get this sort of cold from my shower also. Is this possible with this specific mixing valve? So I would like the hottest hot to be around 115f and the cold, well below 65f. What do you think? Thank you
Well, if you’re getting freezing cold water at other plumbing fixtures in your house, you should be able to do the same at your shower valve. The only thing I can think of is replacing the cartridge with a new one because maybe it’s not mixing properly and you’re getting hot water on your cold side to where it’s not getting cold enough for you.
@@BJPoznecki Ok. So the fixture and cartridge was was installed by a professional plumber, all new. I was thinking maybe I am missing something, like I adjusted it wrong. I feel like as I adjusted the hot down, the amount of cold should have increased. I thank you for your response. Cheers
@@MauzyrockRC When you follow my instructions in this video, all you’re doing is moving the restrictor to get more range of motion and hotter water. This has nothing to do with cold water. The only thing I can think of is maybe there is a manufacture defect with the new cartridge and it’s not mixing correctly. Or, maybe you just have to let the cold water run longer because it’s warm in the pipe inside your walls and you need to run it long enough where you get that fresh cold water from the ground. I hope that helps!
Hi BJ. Thank you so much for your concise and helpful video. Question: is it possible to adjust the scald guard to a position where the handle stops at the 8’clock position?
My pleasure thank you for the compliment! No unfortunately when you put that restrictor in the “off “position the maximum range the handle will go is from a starting position of 6 o’clock counter clockwise to the 9 o’clock position that’s the farthest it goes.
My issue that the Moen Key Lock is already set to the max for hot water but firstly we have to turn the handle all the way to 10 o'clock before we even get any hot water and then advancing it to the full 9 o'clock position it does not give us the same temperature of hot that we get from our kitchen sink hot tap. The Moen Cartridge was just replaced in the shower about 2 1/2 years ago. Can a Moen 1222 Cartridge deteriorate on the hot side that quickly? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Hi! It sounds like the cartridge or the handle are not installed correctly. If at the 10 o’clock position it’s hotter, then as you turn counterclockwise towards 9 o’clock it gets colder. That tells me either the cartridge is installed 180° backwards or the handle is not installed correctly one or the other. Follow my steps in this video to correct it: ua-cam.com/video/ITVyo8lsVO0/v-deo.html
@@BJPoznecki No, you've misunderstood me. For example at 10 o'clock the temperature is 100F. At the full hot position of 9 o'clock the temp is 110F. However the hot tap in the kitchen and other bathroom gives 120F temperature. So it's something specific to the Shower . Do you follow me now?
@@3qdx Ah ok interesting. With that said it could either be debris in the cartridge, or a defect within the cartridge itself. Once you go all the way to that 9 o’clock position it should be full hot water whatever you have your hot water heater set at, which would be the same temperature you get at your kitchen and bathroom faucets. Moen offer a lifetime warranty on their cartridges, so I would reach out to them directly and see if they will send you a new cartridge for free.
@@BJPoznecki Thank you. That is the same conclusion I've come to. As mentioned, the Cartridge was just replaced recently but the water at this location is very hard with a lot of calcium and magnesium granules recently flushed from the HW tank. So there may be debris or something in the Cartridge so it's likely worth replacing again. Thanks for your answer. I appreciate it.
Great video, can you provide guidance for a Moen shower that seems to only flow hot or cold? There must be a sweet spot for in between and I have yet to find it!
It should go from cold, warmer, too hot. If you’re not getting a full range of temperature then the cartridge may need to be replaced because it’s not working properly. If you’re up for tackling it yourself follow my instructions in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ITVyo8lsVO0/v-deo.html
My problem is not getting water that is really cold. When I first turn on the water it is really cold. Once I use hot water and try to go back to cold water, the "cold" water is only lukewarm and I can never get the water as cold as it was in the beginning. How do I adjust the restrictor so that the water can get really cold water? Thank you in advance!
Usually that is a sign the cartridge needs to be replaced. Follow my instructions in this video to install a new cartridge. ua-cam.com/video/ITVyo8lsVO0/v-deo.htmlsi=gz0fjWe1mstMFStA
In my work place, they have a very strange system. There is a small cylinder about 3 to 5 centimetres and it has one edge on it. The other edge is on the permanent ring inside. The superviser was saying put the cylinder in such a way that the little edge is on the left-hand side and is down around 30 degree and then he put other parts in and was keep rotating and rotating and I was so confused. If you can shed some light on it please do.
is it correct to say this doesn't actual affect the temperature of the water but just limits the maximum temperature that the shower can reach? Is there a way to actually make the shower colder if the notch on the temperature limit is already at 12 oclock position?
If you have cold water at your other plumbing fixtures, and the cold water seems to be warmer at the shower or tub. It’s possible the cartridge may be failing and need to be replaced.
I have the same unit, my issue is that I want to take cold showers, right now the water doesn’t get very cold at all, it seems to get warmer when I pass a certain threshold when turning it all the way clockwise.
Either the handle is installed upside down or the cartridge is installed backwards and would have to be rotated 180°. 9 out of 10 times it’s usually the handle. Start with taking the handle off, take a pliers and turn the cartridge stem until you get to the off position. At that point reinstall the handle and it should go from cold to hot. If this doesn’t work then the cartridge is installed backwards and it’s best to call a plumber.
@@BJPoznecki Correct I can't turn it on hot without it being scorching and I can't turn it on cold without it being freezing so in other words I should be able to turn it towards hot and gradually bump it to make it warm but there's no gradual anything.
@@towdoctor670 typically when I hear that it’s usually because the water heater temperature is set extremely high. Try lowering the temperature to the “hot” or “A “setting and see how that is.
One question. My setting is set to max setting, but my handle only goes from 6 to 10 or 11 and then stops. Is there something deeper that could be restricting it?
Yes it’s called a stop tube kit like you’ll see in this link below #102562. There are three parts under this number it’s the part to the far left that you can get at any home improvement store and it comes in whatever finish that you have now whether it be chrome, brush nickel, etc. www.ereplacementparts.com/moen-l82383-tub-and-shower-faucet-parts-c-143601_144220_144317.html

@@BJPoznecki tried that didn’t help going to try another cartridge never know maybe it was a bad one thx for the replies and trying to help I subscribed
Krish V If you’re only adjusting the temperature like I’m doing in this video no, however if you are replacing the cartridge inside the valve, then yes you need to turn the water off at your main shut off valve.
BJ Poznecki thanks for the clarification. I was able to finally find the hex wrench and open the handle. Mine is already set at 12 o clock and when I tried to rotate it left (to make it more hot), I cannot insert the black plastic fitting anymore. Is 12 o clock the max we can set? If I am still not getting the hot water, could the problem be somewhere else? Thanks again
Krish V 12 o’clock is the max setting, so if you’re still having an issue and you have hot water at every other plumbing fixture in the house then there’s a problem with the cartridge and you will have to replace it. If the water is not hot at every other plumbing fixture then you have to turn up the temperature on the hot water heater.
@@BJPoznecki bj, hot water everywhere in the house except shower. Starts hot, then can feel cold water mix in to give a somewhat hot shower. Followed this video, and still the same. Replaced cartridge and still the same. Any other hints would be appreciated.
@@Puffer_Red Hi Matt if you’re going from hot to cold water there are two possible corrections that you have to process of eliminate. One start with flipping the black mounting piece the handle mounts to 180°. If that doesn’t work then you need to shut the water back off and flip the cartridge 180°. So that this way when the handle is in the 6 o’clock position also or known as the opposition when you turn the handle counterclockwise it starts from cold and then gradually gets warmer to the full hat position when the handle is at the 9 o’clock position. Let me know how it goes?
Hi I’m sorry I don’t understand your question? If you’re having a hard time I would recommend hiring a handyman or a plumber somebody that I can help you.
Sorry if I was not clear, I did the 2 steps that you showed in your video but after O removed the black piece, there is no white plastic piece there, it this a problem, will hot water get better of I get one? Thanks
@@jacinthelampron2518 Thank you for clarifying. No, actually without having the white restrictor piece in there you should be able to have full hot water. A couple things, one is you may have a different style of Moen shower valve, or two you need to turn up the hot water at your hot water heater.
Thanks I live in a Senior apartment HUD building and my single handle shower handle came right off on me then that plastic came off to and I did not know what position to reset it in It only went half way so I did not have any hot water like I did before So hopefully I will now My screw I think fell off inside it thats why it came right off on me The man here that is supposed to fix everything works another building to. I was not missing any parts though Just the screw needs tighten now that I moved that hot water limit plastic part to where it belongs again thanks to your video I hate asking the man for help if its a easy fix in here with something that I can do for my self
So much so many may need to know here and Lefty here has no idea how to be a comprehensive thinker in making a video or otherwise. Apparently Lefty can’t be bothered to take a couple screws out on camera. Are they hard to get out? Are they easy to strip? Are they reverse thread? Did you have the water off? Should it be off or on? Is that as far as the piece can be turned? And a dozen other questions several thousand viewers will come up with because Lefty assumed everyone would know certain things that may or may not be obvious to different individuals. So yes Lefty you have earned a big F- as a comprehensive thinker.
If you have a shower handle or any plumbing fixture handle that does not have a setscrew more than likely there is a way that it unscrews at the handle base to detach from the cover plate on the wall.
1 o'clock like you originally had is to restrict hot. 2 o'clock would restrict hot even more for example by limiting the handle solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/How_to_Adjust_the_PosiTemp_Temperature_Limit_Stop
put that white plastic piece to twelve o"clock and the handle still goes to 9 am, but the water still doesn't get hot like the sink which is 5 feet away?? You think I need a new cartridge, its about 20 years old, a Moen
It’s possible you may need a new cartridge, as they do eventually fail, however before buying one try. The black mounting piece the handle attaches to may be upside down and you have flip it around 180° and put everything back together. Or, the cartridge may be in upside down you’ll have to turn the water off to the house. Take the cartridge back out, rotate it 180°, and reinsert it.
Mine is Hot to the right cold to the left and off in between, so you either freeze or get burnt, don't know how to fix that problem. have to call somebody in who does.
It sounds like one or two things. First it may just be the handle is upside down. Try taking the handle and the mounting bracket off. Turn the stem 180° with a pliers, and put everything back together and see if it goes from off, cold, too hot when turning the handle counterclockwise. If that doesn’t work there’s a chance the cartridge is installed upside down. Turn off the water to the house. Take the cartridge out, rotate it 180°, reinsert, turn the water back on, reinstall the handle and fittings. One of those two suggestions should contact your problem.

Absolute lifesaver!!!!

Thank You great info.
Thank you, solved my problem.
Master bath works great but guest bath has lukewarm
Shower . Is it the shower mix valve or something else ? The guest bath is never used for 9 years and has always had this issue .
Hi Carol- More than likely it’s either the cartridge and handle are not installed correctly, or the cartridge needs to be replaced.
I would just make it easy and replace the cartridge by following my instructions in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/ITVyo8lsVO0/v-deo.html
@@BJPoznecki thank u! Looks easy but I’ve heard if cartridge has been there awhile (mine 14years) that it can break trying to remove the old one? Is this true ?
@@carolanne7869 For this type of shower valve it should be a plastic cartridge, however anything can happen, so if you’re not comfortable it’s always best to have a handyman or plumber do the job.
wow so easy and simple, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@BJPoznecki Ok I'll give it another look. You were helpful and I appreciate it!
Cheers
@@MauzyrockRC My pleasure I hope that helps! Let us know what it was when you figure it out.
Follow my steps in this video to correct it:
ua-cam.com/video/ITVyo8lsVO0/v-deo.html
@@3qdx My pleasure hope you guys have a great Christmas! 🎅🎄❄️
Great video! How do I get less hot water? It's scalding only! Thank you
Hi Anne- You have to remove that restrictor clockwise to the 1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 3 o’clock position to lower the maximum height temperature.
@@BJPoznecki Thank you!
@@Anne--Marie My pleasure Anne!
If you’re up for tackling it yourself follow my instructions in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/ITVyo8lsVO0/v-deo.html
My problem is not getting water that is really cold. When I first turn on the water it is really cold. Once I use hot water and try to go back to cold water, the "cold" water is only lukewarm and I can never get the water as cold as it was in the beginning. How do I adjust the restrictor so that the water can get really cold water? Thank you in advance!
Usually that is a sign the cartridge needs to be replaced. Follow my instructions in this video to install a new cartridge.

Make a video on UA-cam and email me the link so I can see what you’re looking at.

Thanks for the vid! They hot water seems to run a little slower. Is that normal?
SkyNDive- Yes that’s normal because now it’s only hot water and not mixing in any cold water, which can sometimes lower the water pressure.
@@BJPoznecki awesome! Thanks again for this!

My pleasure!
is it correct to say this doesn't actual affect the temperature of the water but just limits the maximum temperature that the shower can reach? Is there a way to actually make the shower colder if the notch on the temperature limit is already at 12 oclock position?
Yes, you could turn down the temperature at your hot water heater, however it will lower the temperature of all the plumbing fixtures in the home.
Is there a way to make the water colder? Seems like all the way cold it's still mixed with hot.
If you have cold water at your other plumbing fixtures, and the cold water seems to be warmer at the shower or tub. It’s possible the cartridge may be failing and need to be replaced.
Moving the limiter clock wide any way water is on cold or hot depending what side the limiter get adjust so the limiter is as full mode operating,
I have the same unit, my issue is that I want to take cold showers, right now the water doesn’t get very cold at all, it seems to get warmer when I pass a certain threshold when turning it all the way clockwise.
What are my options if the screw is stripped and I can’t get it to turn with the Allen key
You’ll have to drill out the Allen screw and buy a new handle.
Thats cool I installed my shower and I didn't realize there was a Gouverneur. My problem is there's not enough regulation. I have to turn it down.
What do you mean by not enough regulation? It goes from cold to scorching hot?
@@BJPoznecki Correct I can't turn it on hot without it being scorching and I can't turn it on cold without it being freezing so in other words I should be able to turn it towards hot and gradually bump it to make it warm but there's no gradual anything.
@@towdoctor670 typically when I hear that it’s usually because the water heater temperature is set extremely high.
Try lowering the temperature to the “hot” or “A “setting and see how that is.
I'll try that.
One question. My setting is set to max setting, but my handle only goes from 6 to 10 or 11 and then stops.
Is there something deeper that could be restricting it?
It’s possible the cartridge has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
is there any adapter so it doesn't look the gap to open from the handle to the wall?
Yes it’s called a stop tube kit like you’ll see in this link below #102562. There are three parts under this number it’s the part to the far left that you can get at any home improvement store and it comes in whatever finish that you have now whether it be chrome, brush nickel, etc.

@@youtubingbabs Correct, no need to turn the water off.

Thank you for the feedback this is the first instructional video I’ve ever done I appreciate the advice!
I’ve done all of this and I’m still getting lukewarm showers, and the pressure drops when I turn to hot water.
And ideas?
If you’ve done everything in the video at this point I recommend replacing the cartridge with a new one.
Thanks for the video. Do we need to turn off the main waterline before removing the handle for this adjustment?
I follow instructions to find out that there is no valve, will it help if I put one?

Just take the white nylon piece out of the system and you than can have a regular valve that works like it should.
Different thumbnail then the one on video. The one in thumbnail we have and it has no set screw. How do u take that off
If you have a shower handle or any plumbing fixture handle that does not have a setscrew more than likely there is a way that it unscrews at the handle base to detach from the cover plate on the wall.

1 o'clock like you originally had is to restrict hot. 2 o'clock would restrict hot even more for example by limiting the handle solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/How_to_Adjust_the_PosiTemp_Temperature_Limit_Stop
@@eschrader Yes, that’s correct as you turn the restrictor clockwise it lowers the overall temperature.
put that white plastic piece to twelve o"clock and the handle still goes to 9 am, but the water still doesn't get hot like the sink which is 5 feet away??
