I notice that on UA-cam they LOVE to compare apples to oranges. It's what they do! Let's compare a Toyota Prius AWD to a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon!! What do ya say?
Lower torque is better for daily driving in snow. My 2006 Element is a tank in the snow and is slow. But, the RDX looks more fun being able to kick out the rear. $11,000 more fun? I don't know. I wish they would make a more rugged looking version of the CR-V.
it is the best affordable AWD system for snow out there in my opinion. You can grab a proper Audi RS but it'll cost you much much more $$$$$. I drive in REAL snow 6 months a year, SHAWD is no joke.
I guess I've just become an old fuddy duddy, but when I'm driving in the snow I'm not interested in having "fun", I am interested in getting where I'm going in one piece. Not getting stuck in a drift and freezing to death is also high on the list. Where I live, if you get stuck, you can call whomever you want. You will be told that they will be out after the road is plowed, whether that's later that day or a week later. Until then you are on your own.
@@alansach8437 SHAWD isn't about fast and furious drifting. It can do slight drifts though, enough to be fun for a bit. But, it's designed for maximum traction all the time. That's it's strength. So this is perfect for you. RWD based cars and RWD biased AWD cars are more "fun" amd drift all day long.
As good as sh-awd is in bad weather, it performs even better on dry roads. It is an all weather/all season awd drive system if you like a sporty vehicle. You can really feel the rear end rotate around tight corners when the tq vectoring sends more power to rear outside wheel. The RDX and MDX drive like a much smaller vehicle with sh-awd system. The MDX sport hybrid and RLX sport hybrid has an improved sh-awd rear electric motor system a step above the sh-awd mechanical set-up. The sport hybrid Acura's can tq vector the outside rear wheel and use regen braking to slow the inside rear wheel to rotate tighter with or without engine power.
Curious about your Honda AWD explanation. The 2019 model has a display where you can see power distribution. In fact, the system can send up to 60% to the rear wheels. If you look at the display, you will notice not always send power to the front wheels when you take of, the system behave similar to what it does the AWD on the "old" Escape, where it sends power to the rear wheels on circumstances where there's no front wheel slip, but you need more power at the back to have a better control. So I don't think this 2020 is worst than before, and be only "2wd till front wheels spin".
Of course, like 90% of "How does this car perform in the snow?" videos, we are on a nice plowed track that, with careful driving, you could drive just about any FWD car with decent snow tires around. It is very telling when the narrator says that the snow was starting to intensify so it was time to stop filming! Well, gee! What do I do if I'm at the grocery store and the snow unexpectedly "intensifies" ? Spend the night in the parking lot? It doesn't really matter how sophisticated or not the AWD system is or is not, it does you no good when you are high centered. Then it's all about clearance. When small SUVs first became popular in the late nineties/early 2000s, they all seemed to have a fair amount. But as they have gradually become "crossovers " a lot of that has disappeared. This is a big advantage that Subaru has (8.7 inches) in their Forester and Outback. Maybe that's one reason they are so popular in snowy areas. Something for these other manufacturers to think about.
You are so correct. I remember hitting a snowstorm on the drive from Boston to Hartford. Driving in 6-8 inches of snow all the way in my FWD Mazda6, passing all those Foresters and Outbacks along the way. Just push it and go, no turns, no stopping, no slow down. Biggest problem was visibility. A wall of snow, I was afraid hitting someone, I couldn't see the light of a car in front from 25 feet.
@@tommymas1 you can call anything you want. I have dash cam video footage. All these foresters are driven by people who has no idea how to drive a car even in the good weather. Nathan...you always kill my comment before I finish writing it by explaining what I was curious about. lol Fun stuff. Cool deal that the tires were proper for this test. So you can actually do a proper comparison. It would have but a lot more fun to see you and the other journalists doing this course on a clock to see who could wheel the vehicles the fastest around it.
I would you guys would test CRV and RDX base model and with all season tires on snow. I am sure over 90% of buyers would not buy snow tires and very few would buy the high end model cars.
It's all about the tires. Frankly, on that track he could have driven a Honda Civic with good snow tires. Notice he said at the end that the snow was intensifying.....time to quit! Actually, that's when they should have started!
I'm glad they brought back the sh-awd. I have a 1st Gen 2011 and I was so disappointed when they dropped it from the next model. That being said I wouldn't buy a new one, they are too expensive
Both are fitted with snow tires but, they are different brands with different tread compounds and design. This is not an equal comparison of awd systems!
You are overestimating the real impact that the snow tires make. Also, the Bridgestone Blizzak and Pirelli Scorpion are both excellent tires. If the CRV had cheap chinese tires then I'd agree with you.
I traded my 2014 CRV for the 2018 RDX and the car improved 100% with more power, comfort. and the same AWD which was sufficient in snow. I would never buy the 2019 CRV or RDX with turbo.
@Steven Goodnight When I drive not very capable car for the slippery conditions, one of the strategies I use - wisely select my path. In other words, make sure I don't encounter bad hills. Another strategy, if you have a questionable hill, you stop way back and let other cars clear it. Then accelerate as quick as possible for the conditions and take it with speed.
Is Acura getting rid of the Precision All Wheel Steering or P-AWS? I find that set-up very nice in the TLX and RLX I hope they will continue to use this cool feature.
F**k all the Crv haters. Its the ultimate small SUV. It has more room and is more practical than anyone else. How many competitors has it beaten ? Way too many ! That being said, they do need to fix the oil dilution problem. No car maker is perfect. Doesn't the Rav4 already have a recall. Plus the Hybrid can't even fill its fuel tank. Wtf Toyota ?
Yeah my 2017 CRV is just fine and I check frequently since the OD issue was made public. There's always a few with problems and it's the online rumors that get blown way out of proportion to the actual number.
The problem with all of this, once again, hard packed snow. You aren't really testing anything on hard packed snow. Slushy slimy stuff, ice, deep snow is when the shawd will shine. Plus, turning off TCS doesn't turn off stability control. There's a sequence you have to do with button presses and the hand brake/brake pedal in order to completely turn off the stability control on the Acura. I have a TLX. Only assuming the RDX is the same. I've driven one, but in the summer.I tried a CRV sport the other day against other SUV's, and even with TCS off, stability wouldn't let you play. If you want to actually "drift" you gotta turn ALL the nannies off.
They clearly had it in "maintenance mode" for the testing which does shut everything off. No way the RDX gets that sideways without the systems off completely. (Believe me, I've tried a bunch)
@@pinkertonpunk funny. Even with Tcs on my tlx will kick the tail out. With it off, even more. With stability off you will kill yourself if you don't know what you're doing as she will not stop sliding sideways. This is with nokian hakka studs on..again on slippery snow. Hard packed snow is not slippery.
I have no idea if this is bad or good. Ok, the Acura is better. Seems like apples to oranges to me. But how does it compare to something like the Tahoe or Wrangled Unlimited? Yeah yeah I know; totally different vehicles. But if you're gonna compare, then COMPARE!
Is not about to be the fastest. They are doing a snow review and comparing their AWD systems. Speed don't matter in snowy conditions but the traction and stability.
I wished you guys would test the cars with normal all season tires as ore than 90% of drivers would not buy snow tires. Acura and Honda really screwed up when they dropped the 2.4 and 3.5 engines for the turbo. Hence I traded my 2014 CRV for 2018 RDX. THe 2020 RDX would be my perfect car with 3.5 V6 and 6 speed instead of crap turbo. BY the way, Acura still have not fixed the brake problems on the 2019 RDX. Nor did they fix the engine die out problem.
Hey there I'm assuming you're from the United States. I've had all generations of rdx I do love the J35 the most although the 2.0T is not a junk engine what so ever nor the transmission. Both have extensive engineering and because of new laws ans regulations the only way to beat emissions is to have a turbo. Also In regards to winter tires some countries mandate the use of winter tires by Nov.15th. You are obligated to have winter tires with snowflake symbol on it
I think in thee end, the push button trans maybe a brilliant idea in the long run. some people shift hard or very hard an that’s not good at all in the long run.
good review!!! tired of seeing 20ish little boys commenting from moms basement! those round 2x pipes on rdx are very good looking!!!! double round pipes are way underrated in general!!!!!!!
Some folks may want "fun to drive" instead of basic transportation. The CR-V can't come close to being fun to drive and sporty. The RDX can also do everything the CR-V can do and better when the weather gets bad.
I don’t know about the CRV, but I can tell you the RDX doesn’t get near it’s rated mpg. My 22 RDX struggles to get 23 mpg highway driving 70 mph with cruise control and a flat road. By comparison my 19 BMW X3 with a similar 2 liter turbo easily returned 32-33 mpg on the same drive. That’s a 10 mpg difference between the RDX and X4. How is that possible Honda?
I was going to upgrade my 08 RDX with a 19 RDX back in 2019. I was getting about the same mpgs for both during my test drive (live +5000 feet with hwy speeds +75 mph). The 2.0T is working pretty hard to haul +2 tons. Ended up going for a 19 MDX hybrid 321hp, more room, and improved mpgs of +25.
Highway drive, I can get 32-34mpg at 70mph, no problem with AWD CR-V 2017. Didn't know there's such a large difference in the gas mileage, as my former Acura TL (2006 V6, 3.2l, 258 bhp) was easily 29-30mpg on highway, many years back. I ordered CR-V though, because the trunk space is 50% larger than RD-X. So to match it I needed MDX, but that's a tank, and I didn't want to commute every day in a tank.
Again, why didn't you just test with factory all season tires as in real world? I traded my 2.4 CRV for a 2018 RDX with V-6 because I didn't like the turbo. I did miss the SH-AWD and never understood why Acura took it off 2015 - 2018 RDX.
I'm guessing the assumption is that if you live in an area where you will be navigating heavy snow all winter, you would be utilizing snow tires for that. The idea is to understand what permance is possible under those conditions, not what you might accept if you only had to drive in snow a couple of times a year.
I think the Crv is pretty good but its lacking the Honda soul in it. Give it some more power and better trans. Like kia And hhuyndai are doing with there car, upscale your product
@@Davvv67 yes. But if the whole test was to see which handles better in the snow, then obviously put it in snow mode. The point of the video isn't which of the two let's you have more fun in the snow.
@@bullcity5057 Having fun in the snow was all the reviewer cared about here. Which is dumb, because you probably shouldn't be making your choice based on this. I've driven the RDX in snow in Montreal during a blizzard and I felt very in control. But I felt the same way in a 2016 AWD CRV, despite it being a different driving experience.
Keep in mind the RDX fuel mileage is poor. Not near what the mpg rating says. My 22 RDX is rated at 27 highway but can barely get 23. My X4 BMW easily got 32-33 on the same drive.
The type of tires is more important than the size. Having snow tires or mud/snow rated tires will always do better than all season or performance tires. You also need more tread for improved traction in snow compared to dry or wet weather. Ice and slushy conditions is a hard nut to crack unless you have winter tires w/ or w/o studs.
I traded my 2014 CRV AWD for a 2018 RDX. I test dove the 2019 RDX and din't like it. Reason: Turbo, SVT 10 speed, Complex Info system. MY 2018 RDX wih he V6 and 6 speed would e a perfect car if they kept the SH-AWD system.
I have those tires on my 2019 RDX and they are amazing tires for snow driving, and when driving highway speed I can’t even tell they are winter tires. They actually classified as a performance winter tires.
Dont know if I like the idea of an electric motor controlling my AWD (especially inside the transmission itself) in the CRV. I think their old system was more reliable.
Nathan either misspoke or was given incorrect information. The electric motor that drives the hydraulic pump that engages the clutch pack is on the rear differential itself - NOT inside the transmission. It's the black cylinder at the top of this photo. ahparts.com/watermark/1/items/233719/DSC01053.JPG
f181234 yes that is true. I believe in the older CRVs it actuated by pressure in the rear diff not by an electric motor. If its controlled by a solenoid or something simple I would suspect it is going to last longer than an electric motor.
Will the internet ever stop bit^$-ing about the push button transmission? Is it really that bad? I almost feel like every reviewer complains about it for the sake of complaining about it because everybody else does it. Do you really feel that the Mercedes-Benz steering column stock is better? Is the BMW electronic selector better? It's so annoying to listen to people bit!% about that push button gear selector.
I'm in a TLX. I grew up driving sticks. Yes it is that bad. Does it work, mostly. But it's REALLY slow going from reverse to drive and that's been a problem at times. A proper shifter is more comfortable, and quicker.
@@GoofieNewfie I grew up driving sticks and still have two stick shift cars (this actually has nothing to do with the push button transmission :-) ) I also have two 2019 Acura products and find them to be acceptable. I guess I never expected the shifts to be instant. I also have a BMW and the delay is about the same in both. Just something to think about, Lamborghini uses a push button transmission, the new C8 Corvette has a push button transmission, and oddly nobody seems to be complaining about those. I honestly think people got used to complaining about Acura/Honda push button transmission since they were one of he first ones to implement that solution. Just my thoughts.
@@GoofieNewfie ...and just another thought, just like manufacturers started to put CDVs (clutch delay valve) to compensate for people's stupidity when shifting gears, maybe that delay is there for a reason???
I've owned nothing but stick-shift cars all my life until I got a new CRV with that "evil" CVT and you know what? It's completely fine. Smooth and efficient and no, I don't have oil dilution. A few months ago I was getting window tint put on at the dealer and they gave me a loaner Accord with the push button transmission. It took no time to get used to it and I love the cleaner open look. I wish USDM CRV's had that. Yeah, I'm tired of people complaining about what they aren't used to. I still have an old manual vtec 1997 Prelude SH "SH-FWD" and yes it's very old and authentically analog in comparison, but I can appreciate all the newer changes to cars because of it.
Well, for the money the RAV 4 is a sure winner, NX gets very expensive with options, and although more luxurious interior it is not more comfortable nor outperforms the rav4 in any way or form, I have owned both.
Chromed out CR-V with a more powerful engine, sporty suspension, improved performance, electronic dampers, tq vectoring sh-awd system, and luxury and tech upgrades not found on the CR-V.
Acura and Honda under same roof? Theoretically. Acura is an American company. Created in America and for America. Not sold in Japan. Ans only sold in 6 countries.
I want to warn all of you the crv loves to drift even when you don't want it to. If you don't get the best of the best winter tire pr really good winter tires you will be drifting a lot. It's really hard to regain control because of how soft the Antirollbars are

@Mohamed Roman it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account :D
@Cason Lionel No problem :)
These 2 cars shouldn't even be compared. The SH-AWD alone destroys it.
I notice that on UA-cam they LOVE to compare apples to oranges. It's what they do! Let's compare a Toyota Prius AWD to a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon!! What do ya say?
i just bought a 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec and I absolutely love it !!
Just purchased a 2019 rdx aspec and man these videos are getting me excited for winter !!! Can't wait. Thank for the review
SH-AWD 😍
Lower torque is better for daily driving in snow. My 2006 Element is a tank in the snow and is slow. But, the RDX looks more fun being able to kick out the rear. $11,000 more fun? I don't know. I wish they would make a more rugged looking version of the CR-V.
The SH-AWD is awesome. That with snow tires and your having some real fun 👍🏻
it is the best affordable AWD system for snow out there in my opinion.
I love all the recent content.
My wife just told me that she wants an RDX... that's why I'm here...
WxGuy same here
As good as sh-awd is in bad weather, it performs even better on dry roads.
Love that Acura RDX. Awesome car
I own both 2020 CRV and 2021 RDX. I definitely have my favourite on one of them.
@@theodorekell Calling BS on passing Subaru Foresters and Outbacks in a Mazda6 of all cars. Lol....🙄🤦♂️
@@tommymas1 you can call anything you want. I have dash cam video footage. All these foresters are driven by people who has no idea how to drive a car even in the good weather. @@tommymas1 Watch talking like this to people you don't know. Will lose your teeth one day
It started to snow heavily so the fun day is over? Nope. The fun just begins!
The SHAWD is an amazing system! But awd is sufficient for day to day use
Love Acura ❤️🔥
I don't know what is better. Love acura or anal sex
Wish Honda would have left All Season tires on to help you feel the system more.
Golden Age of Honda Vtec kicked in yooo. Honda 2021... My 10th gear on my 10 speed did something yoooo???
Remember these turbo motors also have a lot of potential. Hondata makes tunes for them. Plus Honda has the best steering in class
So far they had good amount of problems
@@theodorekell source? Super reliable 2.0 motor.

my acura rdx 2008 drive like dream
goodlord5 I agree I have a 2008 Acura rdx
I traded my 2014 CRV for the 2018 RDX and the car improved 100% with more power, comfort. and the same AWD which was sufficient in snow. I would never buy the 2019 CRV or RDX with turbo.
On this packed snow, any FWD car will do fine
@Steven Goodnight When I drive not very capable car for the slippery conditions, one of the strategies I use - wisely select my path. In other words, make sure I don't encounter bad hills.
Another strategy, if you have a questionable hill, you stop way back and let other cars clear it. Then accelerate as quick as possible for the conditions and take it with speed.
Is Acura getting rid of the Precision All Wheel Steering or P-AWS? I find that set-up very nice in the TLX and RLX I hope they will continue to use this cool feature.
Lavonte A Sadly RLX Is discounted 2020 is it
Last year :(
F**k all the Crv haters.
Honda right now is not reliable
Subaru Forester XT 2018 beat it.
I love my 2019 CRV!! Haters gonna hate!
@@annagriffin5486 some people love to drink a lot, or smoke cigars. Doesn't mean it is good for you

crv will do

if you like high end acura
Thank you for your excellent review. This is exactly what I was looking for
272hp/280lb is not a lot of power in 2021! My Volvo has 415 that has been raised to 455 for 2022!
Prices for a Volvo can start where a RDX ends. Don't forget, Volvo has 2.0T engine with only 247hp/258tq.
I have no idea if this is bad or good. Ok, the Acura is better. Seems like apples to oranges to me. But how does it compare to something like the Tahoe or Wrangled Unlimited? Yeah yeah I know; totally different vehicles. But if you're gonna compare, then COMPARE!
Acura's sh-awd system in my opinion is the best in the world
my 2023 RDX A Spec Advance will take me anywhere i want to go
I respect you guy's but how can you compare CRV vs Acura when there is at lease 80 HP difference
Is not about to be the fastest. They are doing a snow review and comparing their AWD systems. Speed don't matter in snowy conditions but the traction and stability.
Gas mileage for the Acura is only 21 City 26 Highway 23 combined for the aspec all wheel drive not 22 City 28 Highway
07 rdx tech here woo.
Yeah, I always shut off the traction control when I driving in snow and icy conditions.
Does that help ?
@@viaPlanetNu if you know how to drive, you disable as much as possible. Otherwise, leave it on and let the car drive for you.

Do you ever need chains with a Honda CRV? We have a mountain pass to go over with several inches of snow on it?
Buy chains just in case. Never hurts
Acura RDX
Great job nice videos
Good review
The real problem here is that the CRV has LED turn signal while the RDX has a bulb turn signal! Shame on you acura! SHAME ON YOU!
I bought the RDX because it had a 3.5L V6 instead of the 1.5L Turbo in the CR-V. Plus I get better mileage than the CR-V. Also I hate CVTs.
if this was 2020, i should’ve bought the rdx… but right now the 2023 crv which i have looks way better than the last gen…
good review!!! tired of seeing 20ish little boys commenting from moms basement!
those round 2x pipes on rdx are very good looking!!!!
double round pipes are way underrated in general!!!!!!!
Honda wins hands down simply due to the better MPG! Nowadays it's all about fuel economy.
Some folks may want "fun to drive" instead of basic transportation. The CR-V can't come close to being fun to drive and sporty. The RDX can also do everything the CR-V can do and better when the weather gets bad.
Awesome cars, thanks for review
The funny part of all is all the owners having BMWs, Benz’s and Acuras drive like Civics in real time SNOW in the cities…so let’s end it there!
I saw when you were driving the RDX, you had it in sport mode. Was wondering why you didn't have it in snow mode
Snow mode lowers accelerator sensitivity. Its more of a safety mode than a sport mode. Sport+ is where the car lets you have a bit more fun.
I want to see how the hybrid AWD will work being that the rear wheels will be 100% electric.
I like the CR-V but I want to know if it has a good sound system because I love music
Go with the Acura. It has the els sound system and it is awesome!!!
Good job!
There was a car review ad in your video? REALLY??
Cars in the US are so cheap😂 In Europe you pay almost 50k Euros for a high trim CRV..
Just starting my car buying research for brand new car( i think)how is the difference in snow driving with crv 17,18 and 19 inch wheels?
Keep in mind the RDX fuel mileage is poor. Not near what the mpg rating says. My 22 RDX is rated at 27 highway but can barely get 23. My X4 BMW easily got 32-33 on the same drive.
The type of tires is more important than the size. Having snow tires or mud/snow rated tires will always do better than all season or performance tires. You also need more tread for improved traction in snow compared to dry or wet weather. Ice and slushy conditions is a hard nut to crack unless you have winter tires w/ or w/o studs.
Rdx is amazing. Now for that 1.5 turbo trash, no thank you
I wish Honda would have put a 2.0T engine and a real automatic transmission in the CR-V. I would have bought a CR-V over the RDX
there are some ACURAs still made in Japan and imported here!!!!!!!
Please clarify all time , also neither where built to be in the snow
Scorpion winter tires, never heard of them
Steve they are from Perelli
W R pretty much all AWD systems are electrically controlled
zroger73 yes that is what I thought. In the older CRVs is it actuated by pressure instead of an electric motor?
f181234 yes that is true. I believe in the older CRVs it actuated by pressure in the rear diff not by an electric motor. If its controlled by a solenoid or something simple I would suspect it is going to last longer than an electric motor.
Tail happy means the rdx have poorer awd system as compared to the crv. In this case CRV was far superior in handling
I test drove one....then orderd it. There is no issue at all. People like whining..I found it just fine.
Lmao at that little Acura weighing 4k pounds. That's absurd.
Was actually surprised when I looked it up.
yea. My 2009 Highlander (4cyl/2 row) was 3800lb
Now a comparision betweet the rav4 and de nx!!
Well, for the money the RAV 4 is a sure winner, NX gets very expensive with options, and although more luxurious interior it is not more comfortable nor outperforms the rav4 in any way or form, I have owned both.
shame the rdx has horrible mpg"s
The RDX is just a chrome out CRV
Chromed out CR-V with a more powerful engine, sporty suspension, improved performance, electronic dampers, tq vectoring sh-awd system, and luxury and tech upgrades not found on the CR-V.
Acura and Honda under same roof? Theoretically. Acura is an American company. Created in America and for America. Not sold in Japan. Ans only sold in 6 countries.
I want to warn all of you the crv loves to drift even when you don't want it to. If you don't get the best of the best winter tire pr really good winter tires you will be drifting a lot. It's really hard to regain control because of how soft the Antirollbars are
SH-AWD is superior
The Honda hybrid does not have a cvt .
Crv is scary bad in the snow
