Hi Matt, good explanation! I just got my spider V240, and to me it sounds very hi-fi ish and agree the eq needs tweaking, but isn't that what the various cab and speaker models should be doing? Also, I'm not sure where the spider eq shows up in the chain, but I don't think it's at the end, where it would be real PEQ. Sadly, I agree with your comment about the documentation being lacking. I've subscribed to your channel, and look forward to your other videos! Andy
Andy Wason, I think these require a great deal of break in time. Couple weeks of use should do it. Mine did anyway. I like the general sound, but it's certainly tweakable. I tweak these post EQ's to reshape and try to put back some of the things detracted from the FR amplification. To me, this is not a whole lot different than tweaks made to any FR wedge etc. Live, I cut the treble quite a bit (9o clock position on some models) and I bump up the mids in the model. EQ remains.. Seems to warm up better that way, especially if you get a sound tech that mics closer to the cap edge like I just had this weekend. Start with a basic amp model, select a cab, adjust to similar live level volumes, then go in and apply the PEQ as needed. Many models will not require as high of a gain for PEQ filter parameters. This has been common for FR systems, modelers direct to PA. Really important to adjust settings similar to level you will play. For me, I generally have live presets running with master at about 11 o clock. It's really loud too. That is for a semi large to large room. Small rooms, much lower levels. Many get lost in the concept of post EQ in modelers since there is more peaking than there are cuts or notching out as is typical of recording or PA usage with PEQ. Most of my peak gains are set no more than 5-6db. Video exaggerates things more due to the nature of the PEQ used in the DAW software.
Bummer. Did you submit a ticket at Line 6's site for the FBV? Mine was easy to update. Just grabbed the updater, then plugged in the FBV3. Updater located the FBV looked at firmware version and then suggested updating which I did. Took 3-4 minutes, but worked fine.
Only thing I wished this unit and App had was the ability to save just FX presets. Since many Marshall amp models I use have a similar cab setting, be cool to have those settings for cab and PEQ together. I know my option is create a template of sorts. Custom FX setting and save options would have been better.
Yeah I did. I tried to explain to them it crashed on both of my Windows 7 64bit Professional Systems. They wanted me to return it. I finally got it to work on my old Windows Home Premium System. There's a few guys on the forum had similar issues, I think they just sent them back. I'm good now though!
Thanks Matt, great video, was bout to return my spider V, thanks to your help I got some good tones
Will tweaking peq help remove the boxy sound?

Thanks Matt! Good explanation. I'm getting my mind around it, though I was distracted for a few days as I bricked my FBV3 while trying to update it!

I can't get the app to work with my iPad.
I have a Line 6 Spider V 30 and I don't find the editing program in line 6 website. Can U tell me the name.
Thank you.
Spider Remote
Are you saying that you can only do this with playback or can this be done for live performance? Can it be done without the app?
Yes, the PEQ is a function onboard the Spider V.
