For such a smart sounding guy, you are factually wrong. You never own software. Try reading the agreement that you signed when you bought the software. It specifically says that you don’t own it. You agree to not reverse engineer it or decompile it. You buy a license to use it. Adobe is not a monopoly. Why are you lying to people?

    • @Modernaire
      @Modernaire Місяць тому

You may have cut and removed, uninstalled and not ever LOOKED at any Adobe but Adobe work is EVERY WHERE. What do you think TP-Link art department or creative design marketing agencies, etc. packaging designers USE? Affinity?! Maybe in the future, I mean Photoshop started as a similar small duo of coders, so maybe. But it's not 1991 anymore.
MS and Apple, probably won't remove Adobe RGB... there are Adobe technologies behind everything, including the printers at FedEx office... government docs, education, medical... science, are we to banish those devices from our lives? Doctor, does that life saving machine, does it have... gulp... Adobe technologies?...
Google probably most likely uses Adobe tech to help you earn subs and monetary compensation from all the content, with the use of Adobe tech.
So, Like that*... because the Hate Adobe Mob says so, avoid Adobe at all costs? This is very reminiscent of the Occupy Movement and the unavoidable hypocrisy and mental thing involved in that.

I’ll tell you, I didn’t like the price in the beginning too, especially when hyper inflation hit and through lean times, but I still kept it and it worked or something somewhere and I kept using it for my own personal projects and for clients along the way, and every time you use it, you software and learn tricks and so on as I alluded and I’m suggesting it’s investment yourself it’s just calibrating how you think about things.

When I was in college at a fancy art and design institution like I think semester possibly even a year I did everything by hand old school. What’s important? Is your ability draw, your artistic idea your solution and so on.
It’s like also another example I don’t really care what platform as far as computer operating system you use as long as you’re lightning fast and efficient with it.
As far as renting, I don’t think it’s renting nor should it be referred to that because that’s not the appropriate term to use that to this. Back in the day, we had to buy the software and came a serial number with that, but it was still license. You didn’t really own. It just bought a license of which then they would charge you an upgrade fee for the next version or, you have to pay it again. And if you did pay over money, what is that really say it says the economy is bad and people are hurting. But you have to work something extra and whatever you’re paying for right now it pays for itself. it’s sort of a investment.

Thank you! Absolutely needed video. My little Adobe story: About 5 years ago, I tried opening Photoshop, as I did every day since buying CS3 extended in 2007, and was met with a weird message: "You need to re-register your software in order to keep using it!" WOW! What??? I had bought the suite in September 2007, AND registered it at the time. So I thought, OK, no problem... but, when I tried to do so, Adobe told me that this version is no longer supported, and you cannot register it! No matter what I tried, I could not open any of the programs in the suite... I needed to "upgrade", which meant subscribe to their new model. I phoned, and of course, got nowhere. So, being inventive, I installed it again on a computer that was "not" connected to the internet. I still use it. I bought the frekain' thing for $1,600 CND, so I bloody well will use it. It is outdated, but for what I do, works perfectly well.
I hope everyone ditches these bandits. I will look into your suggested alternatives when I buy a computer that is recent enough to run them.

The "publicly traded" argument is a flawed one. A good product gets a company plenty of money and pleases the shareholders too. This model worked well for many decades now. The reason we are at where we are now is a monopolized market due to (bad) regulation, possibly complacency due to cartel behaviour, and people buying their bad product in the first place. The support for them by the customer should have stopped the moment they started with the bad practices. I do realize that companies who depend on them can't just switch to a different product, even more so when there are barely any alternatives left. In the end the customer is still king. We can still vote with our wallets if a companies incentives go corrupt. The same should happen to companies like Microsoft and their increasingly intrusive OS, yet people just keep paying for the same slop.

@@terrydanks Yes, it's a deductible expense - but a hefty one, if you don't make that much money with these programs (not so much when they are your main tools, but still). Not everyone gets rich in the graphics industry, especially as freelancers. And for non-pros - they can easily get away with Affinity apps (quite affordable) and all the rest (like DaVinci Resolve, which can be used for free). And then there's the photography bundle (PS, LR, Bridge and Camera Raw), which is not only affordable, but also really good even for amateurs. And it is quite obvious to me that most commenters are not professionals (or at least only with photography, where it is easy to use other tools), as they nearly always point at Photoshop and its (many) alternatives, but ignore the elephant in the room - InDesign (and to a certain extent Illustrator).

Never used Premiere: Avid Media Composer for tough video editing (I mean where story and timing are critical - still unbeatable trimming functions), Resolve for color grading
After Effects: when you need it, you need it, but a lot of what people use it for can be done with video editing software if you take time to learn
Illustrator: like AE, still hard to replace in some cases
Biggest obstacle: HR departments and educators who have no idea what software does and how creatives use it

ASC 606 Accounting rules for subscription revenue are why there are fees to bail out of an annual subscription. The accounting treatment is expensive to unravel. Corporations understand why they sign a commitment for an annual subscription that the only two choices are run the subscription to the annual end OR renew in 12 months. Unsophisticated consumers think rules don't apply to them.

I switched to Linux Fedora despite having spent nearly $3000 to establish an Adobe/Windows environment and the transition was accelerated/encouraged by Adobe's changed pricing model! While I haven't found replacements for Premiere/AfterEffects/Photoshop, the free media tools on Linux come pretty close to being enough. Canva just bought Serif very recently, and they are a subscription model. On day one Canva did say they would keep the single payment to own at each major release so here’s to hoping that sticks. I have used the Serif products for several years and I especially like making one rather affordable payment every few years to license it on all my devices. Procreate is much more than the mere toy it’s sometimes shown as and packs a lot of features onto just an iPad.
I also can’t stand subscriptions especially for what are still considered “goods”. I like your comment that sub models let companies get lazy and just iterate instead of pushing boundaries. I really love the few companies that say “here’s some cool new stuff, no charge, have fun, it’s on us”.

Never heard of you. Liked and subscribed within the first 2 minutes.
I started using Adobe in 1993. I used it all the way up to CS 6. And then... well, we all know what happened. I just stuck with my CS6 versions (I never bothered with the .5 versions). Shortly after that, I gave up on getting any 'help' from Adobe for anything--not like they were ever helpful in the first place.
And then I slowly but surely started using GIMP, of all things. Still not satisfied with that solution--I'll be taking a hard look at your other videos! Affinity Photo, you say? I’ve seen a ton of these videos lately as I am also sick of the subscription as well as Adobes attitude towards users. The problem is I often have to share files with collaborators or colleagues. I cannot migrate to systems that won’t enable me to share files due to format issues. I have been testing Affinity and it’s not a seamless integration, so unless everyone I work with collectively migrates (and the won’t happen anytime soon), I cannot make the shift. It’s been the problem on all of the “alternative choices video” it’s solo artists or designers, who mainly work alone. They are not part of a larger team. As long as there is not a seamless alternative, Adobe still have the upper hand, in a lot of situations. It’s sad but that is the case.
