I would absolutely love to live in a house close to where I could hear it every day just playing certain pieces of music. It would be beautiful, some people complain about bell ringing and I just love them. Such talent. ❤.
I was fortunate to grow up not far from the Marie Emory Carillon in Mariemont, Cincinnati, Ohio. We didn't notice it all the time. Guess we just took it for granted. However, now the memories are thick. One in particular was a few weeks before Christmas. More than forty years ago. I was visiting Mom and Dad to make cookies after work. When I got out of my car to walk to the front door, I heard it play "God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen." I will never forget that moment. They still play concerts on Sundays in the summer. Thank you. for posting this wonderful video.
Thank you Joey for playing the amazing music! I tried audition this year and though I didn’t get in I really appreciate the instrument and the experience~ thanks a lot!
I’m curious how one would practice the carillon without the whole neighbourhood hearing - can the connections to the bells be unlinked? Is there such thing as an electronic “keyboard” you can use at home? Would love to see a video coving things like this if so!
Check out the rob scallion video where they explain how the carillon works and an video tour. He asks the same question and Joey Brink mentions that, yes, there are electronic practice carillons. So the neighborhood doesn’t have to hear you practicing. Though it’s not an in depth video about practice carillons.
depends on where you live. In England (and in other parts of the world but very limited) we like to do something called change ringing where the bells swing through 360 degrees and you have a band of ringers with one for each bell and we ring different combinations of bells. There are many videos on youtube showcasing change ringing
It's really nice. Especially when they do special performances e.g. when David Bowie died. I got so used to it at the time, but now that I moved it's one of those things that I reminisce on occasionally and remember how much I miss it.
Excellent playing Joey! The minor third on those lower bells really distorts the melodic bass line of this song. Is there a reason carillons don't use tubular bells that lack the minor third? Are there carillons which use tubular bells?
Good question! There is a carillon with major third bells, but interestingly, when the minor third is removed from the overtone series in a bell, people generally miss it :-)

You are so blessed, I would love to have heard that it would have been beautiful. 🤗.
the carillon sounds really amazing
I know right? That's why the carillon is my favorite instrument to this day. It's just to loud when you're close to it.
I love this song especially on the bells.
Utterly gorgeous - I had no idea bells could be used like this! Thank you so much for sharing this joey )))

What does it feel like to live somewhere near the bells? I would love to hear something like that on a daily basis.
it plays at noon and five for an hour each on a daily, Westminster on the hour, it is programed to play we will overcome right now though

Bell😃🤣😇
I feel like I can die happy now.
Hello. How many octaves this carillon have
6 octaves!
Very interesting. Is this just intonation?
No, the instrument is equal temperament, but the overtones of bells (minor 3rds) make the tuning and sound quite unique!
@@joeybrinkbells Ahh, good to know, thanks!
is it in F#?
The Rockefeller Carillon at UChicago is in Ab actually. Close!
What time of day is it when the church starts playing pachbell?
Only when a carillonist is performing and decides to play it. I often played it for weddings :-)
Oh! Thank you!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤝
