Hi! I'm a carillonist, which means I play big tower bells. I like to play film scores and pop songs, alongside classical and contemporary music, and my own compositions.
I'm currently switching gears to dive more into the acoustics, music theory, instrument techniques and design, so I'm decreasing my upload frequency for now. New videos up at 8am Eastern every other Saturday.

Great Video ! Thank you for sharing. It looks like the camera that records your feet on the pedals might be a little further back than on previous videos. 😊 Wishing you safe travels and success on your upcoming tour. Hopefully you will record some of it.

This is so cool!!!! My girlfriend wants to know if you could do the Star Trek Voyager theme on the bells?
So cool!
Thanks for the quality sound! Are there any plans to perform some of Strauss's waltzes?
💗 Lovely!
Beautiful arrangement! I’m sure this has been asked plenty of times before, but how do you practice pieces without alerting the whole area? Is there a way to disengage the bells when you’re practicing, and then you engage them when it’s time to perform?
I actually just published a video on this :-) ua-cam.com/video/vhYhDwgzb3U/v-deo.html
Це щось шедевральне!!!❤❤❤. Дякуємо !! Обіймаємо - Україна.

after watching all that i unfortunately came to the conclusion that i actually just like the unique eeriness given by these bells playing what sounds like a wholesome recognizable tune or motif to tell the time. like thats almost what gives them their identity to me, the "unmaintained" sounding overtones playing purely major licks.

I came here from Joey's video about playing songs that sound in tune on bells, and I must say, the overtones in the bells lend themselves to this song wonderfully
Oh shit hi Nelli
@@putridvibes9332 Hi Putrid :)
That is quite a high-pressure job! He plays music, and everyone in the district will hear it. I wonder if this bell instrument is so unique, yhat it requires a special technique to match the bell sound delay or something. If so, imagine the only way to practice is with something as massive and grand as this 😂
“What is the church bell cooking?”
Sounds like something generated by TempleOS
And another great video! I absolutely adore the octatonic scale. A few places in Chopin's Ballades come to mind where he uses them to great effect. Or Lili Boulanger's stunning D’un Soir Triste.
That was so insightful, thank you very much! Since I watched this, I always catch myself singing the minor third to any bell I hear..😀
I always wondered what that tower was when I drove past it. Cant belive I just stumbled upon this
After watching this for some reason I had the cursed impossibly hard challenge for someone to play rush E on that bell tower
Can't describe how haunting this would be to people outside who aren't in the know
Organs can be played in isolation? The priests in my parish, where their living spaces are connected to the church, would disagree. I mean, they never complain, but I know they hear it. xD
Bells never quite feel in tune due to the inharmonicity in their overtones. As overtones diverge from the „perfect“ natural series an instruments sound becomes more „noise“-like. As in there are a lot of overtone frequencies that are not in a well ordered relationship with each other. Bells are one of the (non-percussive) instruments closest to producing sound/noise rather than clearly definable tones. And our ears compare notes not just by their base frequency and first harmonic. Thats why even bells arranged in minor thirds do not sound entirely „clean“ and in tune. (tho obviously this property is also what gives bells their unique sound) Using diminished scales helps somewhat, since the base note and first harmonic ARE the most dominant. But it is strongly recommended to use wide chord spacings and avoid tight runs of adjacent notes whenever possible. Human perception is a lot more forgiving when comparing wider intervals. And even a major third can sound more in tune than a minor third if it is put in another octave instead. Another issue is that bells cant be tuned quite as easily as other instruments. Which also makes it hard to appeal to human ears a bit by spreading the lower and higher octaves. A trick we often use with big stringed isntruments like harps and pianos to compensate for the inharmonicity in very thick and very short metal strings. But ultimately it is hard to even define what „in tune“ means with instruments such as this. (technically this is true for all instruments, but bells are one of the most extreme examples that we still consider tuned) Just measuring the fundamental resonant frequency (as most tuners do) is in stark opposition to human perception. And matching overtones is a messy affair where matching one inadvertedly creates a mismatch in others. No mathematical model proposed so far has yet managed to solve the perception of „harmonic“ sound as opposed to a dissonant one.
At approximately 5:25 Fallout intensified.
Your video are very original and I love it.
Genuine question, how do you reasonably practice on that thing without annoying everyone in town?
I just posted a video on that exact question a couple weeks ago :-) go check it out!
I wish to ring bells to in a tower just like you
Those graduates are lucky to have you and the bells there
Its just too bad every city and town doesn't have a Carillon.
I always wonder what one winged angel from final fantasy 7 would sound on these bells.
bro play some metal on metal bells!
Matthias Wandel has a good video on why this happens and even makes a bell with a major third overtone at the end. m.ua-cam.com/video/eMgmJEaYs70/v-deo.html
Great video, relly cool to see and a great piece of music!
Sounds creepy but in a joyful kind of way.
I would love to hear a version of this from outside :O
That is actually amazing, i don't know if you take song request but i would like you to try "low key gliding"
I feel like I've seen this guy before. His face looks familiar... He definitely rings a bell.
Even though you do not see your audience while you are playing, do you still get stage fright frin tine to time?
Occasionally! For a big performance maybe, but not so much a daily recital :-)
I know it's not the main focus of this video, but it did get a mention, so - handbells were invented for change ringing practice! It's obviously not their primary use anymore, though
Oh wow I didn't know that! Fascinating :-)
Residents panicking when they start hearing the galactic imperial march coming from the bells 🤣
i tried to go up and play the bells right after the UT Austin graduation ceremony but the building with the carillon in it was on lockdown and they wouldn't let me in. Dissapointing 😭
Really loved Your original. Unsurprisingly You know how to make the bells work :D It's good that You get to also sometimes see and hear the reactions instead of being the anonymous mood setter for an entire town, but I do wonder how You feel about the latter. Being like the weather. Sometimes You shine like the sun and people all around shine with You, and sometimes You let gloom blanket the city, rousing the longing for better times in its denizens. Much love from across the world ♥
Enjoyed this video so much !
Great song. Love Billy Joel. You should totally do “Runaway” by Del Shannon sometime - it’s iconic… early 60s!
How do you handle copy right when you are playing copyrighted music?
Universities generally have ASCAP/BMI licenses
Cool music I like it
I wish I could force that many people to listen to my music
It can also be done with organs. I love me some 64' pipes or Trompette en Chamade. Or you can pick any band instrument and play it in an apartment complex like my neighbors.
@@benbookworm Even the scale of those doesn't quite match. How many chamades can you hear a mile away?
🥲 SO sweet! Lovely! 🥲 Thank you 💗
I had my hs graduation in the ritchie center just a few years ago, crazy to think it might have been you playing the bells after the ceremony!
