How do you run this game on PC in 2024?

If your game crashes when you start a new game, it is a known issue, especially in the GOTY version when running an integrated graphics card.
Investigate on this to solve the issue. What worked for me and many others was to downgrade your game to a previous version. You do that by downloading a patch. There's a Steam Community post about the whole thing.
