Spray Max 2k lacquer is a good, proper activated finish, goes on well, produces an excellent finish. just finished my clearcoat with the 2k. awesome stuff, beautiful results. can you get me you link on sanding and polishing after using this product? great videos, thanks for the help
It’s a balance between getting a wet coat and getting runs. I don’t apply it so heavy as to run. Painting in a warm dry environment is also helpful/important.
Brad sometime try simtec polyester sander sealer and simtec thick top coat clear. it sands really easy buffs out to a mirror finish and is 90% the hardness of glass
For anyone who’s thinking they can get away without protection while spraying 2k, I did that about 2 months ago and it is okay if you do like 2 coats but if you’re gonna be doing this over the weekend or anything it really did do a number on me. I was nauseous and had a fever, and I was spraying outside but keeping the sprayed pieces in my room to dry (I’m a student so I got a single room). Yeah just keep that in mind and stay safe y’all!

@@BradAngove you’re IMO kinda a legend for still answering questions on your 5 yo video. You said you could probably do 3 guitars, one can, is that still about right? Assuming metallic or color shift, no glitter, no decals.
I just finished with 3 coats of clear. I have a little dust and a couple runs, completely my fault, but have a question about removal. I need to add a couple more coats of clear, due to the detail painted being a little raised. Do I do the next coats prior to fixing the runs and removing the dust, or do I fix first? Is scraping with a razor blade how you fix runs?
This is awesome, my 6 year old son wants me to turn his black 3/4 size strat into an Frankenstrat. Followed everything apart from what type of mask I need for the clear coat?
I've done several videos on the polishing process that you might find helpful, including one that was done entirely by hand in my how to paint your guitar by hand series.
Love your videos, you've inspired me to paint my guitars. How did you prepare it for the clear coat? Did you only do the scuffing as shown in the previous video or did you sand it with a higher grit sanding paper? Thanks in advance.
@@BradAngoveHi Brad, love the video. I have a sharpie autograph on my guitar so there's no way of sanding down the surface. What process and product do you recommend for that situation ?
Absolutely Love Your Video's!! Sorry if this question has been asked before but just wanna make sure I'm doing this right. I finished painting the body (Black Gloss) let dry and scuffed up with 800 grit sandpaper before applying this 2K. Not sure if I went to far but I have taken all the gloss off and left lots of fine scratches, very dull. Will these scratched get filled in with the 2K clear or should I put another coat of paint back on, No scuff before 2K clear? Thanks In Advance.
Hey Brad, I have viewed several of your videos and I appreciate your instructions. I assembled a double-neck kit guitar a couple of years ago, and I did not use a sanding sealer before I sprayed the primer. As a result, I got off-gassing bubbles that came through on every following coat of paint, and clear. I have dis-assembled the guitar, and have begun removing the paint in hopes that I can get it right this time and it will turn out great. My questions are: Should I try to remove all of the paint & primer down to bare wood, and once there, use the sanding sealer before applying primer? Or, should I just get the surface of the old paint sanded down past the bubble circles, and go forward from there? If the 2nd option is appropriate, should I put some sanding sealer on the old paint, and then spray the primer? Your reply will be most appreciated. (By the way, it was originally painted with lacquer, and that is what I will use to repaint it).
You can just sand down until it’s flat again. No need to go right back to the wood, just get past the imperfections. There’s no reason to apply sealer now. You shouldn’t even need primer at this point unless you end up going right back through all of your paint.
Brad thank you. I have two questions for you: 1) Besides Windex, what kind of wax and grease remover do you buy? I am in Canada 2) if I want to colour sand, what grit sand paper to use before applying clear. Thank you. Will order clear coat
Can you use this Spraymax on an already gloss finish? I used Rustoleum gloss spray paints. It's dried and glossy, so I'm not sure if I need to scuff before putting down the Spraymax or not. Kinda makes me nervous to scuff before clear coating bc the paint job has a racing stripe. I'm afraid to scuff through the fine lines.
Thanks Brad you gave me the courage to turn a Red Rogue Rocketeer RR50 into a Red, White, Black Frankenstat for my almost 5 year old grandson who loves Van Halen. I brought three cans of Rust-oleum Lacquer Spray Paint (White , Black and Clear) would it be OK to sand the red down to get the gloss off and paint over it with the lacquer? I don't know what type of paint Rogue uses on these cheap guitars. THANKS ALOT.
That's basically what you would do, yes. Sand the red lightly to get rid of the shine, clean it, and then go ahead with your taping and spraying. I doubt that those cans are lacquer though.
So the professional way, using the sprayer application, is of better quality overall because it is more durable in the long run - ? In general, sprayer vs aerosol can application is better because -- better quality of the "mix" you're able to buy, more even coats, the velocity/"force" of the spray from the sprayer makes a difference --- ?? (Sorry for the noob questions, just trying to understand.) Great video. Glad to know there's a reasonable option for the financially challenged!
That’s a great question. In essence you can buy better (and different viscosities etc.) clear coat for a gun, you can adjust the mix with different thinners based on temperature, and you can adjust the volume you’re putting out at once. More versatility for potentially better (or sometimes worse) results.
Hey brad! This is a great video- that guitar looks great! I’m considering doing a project with StewMac metallic Nitro lacquer for my color coats- do you think this stuff would work okay over that?
Brad, I think you've convinced me to try this stuff. I will spray safely with respirator, goggles, and gloves. I will do it outdoors or in a ventilated garage. When is it safe to bring in the house to let set a few days before sanding/polishing? It will sit in a spare room in the house. I may sound too cautious, but after some bad health issues I guess I will be that way till I check out lol. Also, is it ok to wetsand at that point? Thanks!
I learn a lot of your videos, i´ve sprayed a couple of guitars, and i have much to learn :) Keep the videos coming and i will fill my head with all info :)
If I’m using this clear coat over a hand painted acrylic design, would you recommend 6 coats? And how long between coats? I would need 2 cans? And do u plug the screw holes with anything? Thanks? You’re a wealth of information for this newbie!
Awesome video Brad! Thank you so much for all the info you are providing with all your videos! I have a question... I just got a 43 PSI airbrush kit and I'm getting on these days an 0.8 spray gun that I would like to use to clear coat one of my guitars. What are my options in terms of clear coats? Lacquer, Poly? Do I need to dilute them before spraying? I also have Wipe-on Poly. Can I spray this one? I would appreciate any info on this. Thank you!
Lacquer and poly each have their own spray technique and formula. They are both options, and yes both will generally need to be thinned for spraying. You can spray the wipe-on poly, but again you will need to thin it a bit first.
@@BradAngove Thank you Brad! What should I use as a thinner and what would be the ratio Wipe-On Poly (or Lacquer) / Thinner? Any specific products you would recommend?
You can just use paint thinner for the poly or lacquer thinner for the lacquer. I don’t know what ratio as I’ve never sprayed wiping poly. You just need to get it to a viscosity where it sprays smoothly from your gun and lays out well.
Thanks for the info man! I'm about to sculpt a biomechanical top piece for a guitar and im probably gonna use this to finish this! Would love to show you the end result.
@@BradAngove Yeah! Or a film of the stickiness from the tape? I saw your video on using 2x gloss to do a stripe effect and you talked about the tape and how to peel it properly. Same method applied for this kind of gloss?
Well it can definitely leave ridges. I assume you’re not painting patterns with it though. For cavity edges etc. I often run a razor blade around the edge to prevent it from peeling off the areas where I want it.
Do you have a video on how to build that handy holster/stand you are using? Of all the videos I've seen, that setup seems to provide the best access to all areas of the guitar, while holding it firmly in place. I find the hanging guitar body awkward when spraying the horns and sides.
Thanks for the video man, quick question what grit sandpaper would you use to scuff it up the next day and add a final coat? Also did you do any sanding or scuffing in between the first three coats?
Do you have any videos on how to remove lacquer paint bubbles or runs/ streaks from your guitar? I just did my first lacquer paint job on my guitar and I have some streaks/bubbles I want to remove. Please help!!!!
@@BradAngove Do you have any videos on how to properly install pickups? Just curious. I am very curious about what kind of drill bit I need to use so I can screw in my humbucker into the wood.

Nice that looks good thank you for the tips especially because I'm planning on the building I own guitar and I was wondering how they was doing it so there you go awesome! That's really that's close for being professional and being the amateur!
Very nice! Thanks for the steady flow of informative vids.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Thanks again Brad for a very helpful video - not the first time I've said so - I appreciate these informative tutorials. Cheers!
Thanks John. I’m glad you’re finding them useful.
Thanks a lot Brad, then that is what I'm going to do. I haven't ordered the blue metallic from Retranch yet " temporary closed for inventory " so I'll add a can of clear lacquer to my order. I do appreciate your help. Ted
You’re welcome Ted.
The Strat turned out sweet! I actually like that the paint scheme is one off and not an exact copy of EVH's Frankenstrat.
Thank you.
Excellent vid (and series) that I've only just discovered. I'm getting ready to clear coat my Frankie with the same spray, and wondered how this held up for you if you've still got that guitar. Was there any yellowing over time? Thanks!
This stuff doesn’t yellow. I’ve repainted that guitar since then like I usually do, but I have others coated with that clear that haven’t changed at all.
@@BradAngove Cheers Brad. I appreciate the quick reply and thanks again for sharing your knowledge 👍
Always great info Brad - thanks so much!
Cheers!
Hey Brad, sorry to say, but i sprayed a guitar with it (great result!) and use the rest, without any hope, on a headstock, seven days later! (Winter in Germany...) so - Great Product.
The can still worked for you 7 days later? Did you refrigerate it?
:-) not really, only cold weather here... No, there was a bit left in the can and i had to spray the headstock. I wanted to finish it with truOil but give the can a try, and it works fine! I use this stuff all the time and never thought this would be possible after more than 2 days....
Ah - and i put the can in "warm" water for a while before using it..
That’s great. I’m glad it worked for you.
Here we go! Now im going out to my garage and gonna put some clear 2k on ma stringy instrument!
I hope it goes well.
just finished my clearcoat with the 2k. awesome stuff, beautiful results.
can you get me you link on sanding and polishing after using this product?
great videos, thanks for the help
You’re looking for a video on that? I have several of them.
Hard to find
I am new at this. I am repainting a guitar
I purchased the 2k clear coat
You seem to put the coats on kinda thick. How do you keep it from running
I’m familiar with the winter, but haven’t used it. I need to find a paint gun that I really don’t like first haha.
Hi Brad, you're doing a fantastic job ! You giv3e me tons of inspiration and as soon as I did my "frankenstein" I gonna send you a picture ! thanx a lot
Glad to hear you’re finding the content worthwhile.
@@BradAngove you’re IMO kinda a legend for still answering questions on your 5 yo video. You said you could probably do 3 guitars, one can, is that still about right? Assuming metallic or color shift, no glitter, no decals.
Yeah I’d still say that’s about right with this type of paint. If your surface isn’t quite as smooth it will take more to get it evened out of course.
Awesome looking clear, I was torn between a rub on poly or spray. Not anymore, spray and polish it is.
Solid choice.
Best looking one yet! Great job!
Thanks!
Thanks for video. Just ordered and will use on guitar refinishing job. What buffing process to bring to a very high shine after it fully dries?
Have a look at one of my videos on sanding and polishing. I have several.
Would you ever recommend using a 1k clear for a guitar finish? Without the catalyst, will it ever harden enough to be durable on a guitar?
Yes, it just depends on the type. Nitrocellulose lacquer for example is a very popular guitar finish and is 1k.
That looks REALLY GOOD at 8:00
I just finished with 3 coats of clear.
Fix first. I use a combination of razor blade scraping and gentle sanding to deal with those types of things.
@@BradAngove Thanks for your answer. Your videos are great!
Thank you for the video. I appreciate the effort, and yeah... that's a fine looking finish!
This is awesome, my 6 year old son wants me to turn his black 3/4 size strat into an Frankenstrat. Followed everything apart from what type of mask I need for the clear coat?
You need a respirator with fume filters. I think I have a couple in the amazon link in the description.
Just discovered your channel. Thanks for all the tutorials!
Welcome aboard
Just used it on my guitar - worked great! How long would you let this clear coat dry/harder before sanding/polishing?
24 hours
can you please teach us how to do sand and polish it to get a perfect finish? the cheap easy way to do it at home? that should be part 2 of this video
I've done several videos on the polishing process that you might find helpful, including one that was done entirely by hand in my how to paint your guitar by hand series.
thank you, found you're other videos
+Realist glad to hear it.
Love your videos, you've inspired me to paint my guitars. How did you prepare it for the clear coat? Did you only do the scuffing as shown in the previous video or did you sand it with a higher grit sanding paper? Thanks in advance.
Just scuff with about 800 grit.
@@BradAngoveHi Brad, love the video. I have a sharpie autograph on my guitar so there's no way of sanding down the surface. What process and product do you recommend for that situation ?
Have you seen my video on how to protect autographs?
Absolutely Love Your Video's!! Sorry if this question has been asked before but just wanna make sure I'm doing this right. I finished painting the body (Black Gloss) let dry and scuffed up with 800 grit sandpaper before applying this 2K. Not sure if I went to far but I have taken all the gloss off and left lots of fine scratches, very dull. Will these scratched get filled in with the 2K clear or should I put another coat of paint back on, No scuff before 2K clear? Thanks In Advance.
You’ve done it correctly by the sound of it. The 2k will fill those scratches.
I have two questions for you:
1) Besides Windex, what kind of wax and grease remover do you buy? I am in Canada
2) if I want to colour sand, what grit sand paper to use before applying clear. Thank you. Will order clear coat
I buy duplicolor was and grease remover, and I sand with 800 grit before clear coat.
Thank you for replying promptly Brad, the wax and grease remover won’t eat up the paint.
I used the spray max. thanks for info video
If it’s gloss you should scuff it gently at least. Otherwise the clear might delaminate.
Trying now, used your link, and appreciating your direct video style!
I hope it goes well for you.
That looks awesome! I’m gonna try using that clear coat.
Solid choice. Just make sure you wear a respirator.
Great job,Looks so professional
+Lorrie Deal Thank you. I'm glad you think so.
... I didn't know Christian Bale had such an interest in guitars.
Following your videos for a project of my own. Good stuff!
@@BradAngove Thank you Brad!
Thanks for great videos. how long does it take to dry clear coat (regular, and tgis one in video) to be safe to wet sanding ang mirror polishing.
Hey brad! This is a great video- that guitar looks great! I’m considering doing a project with StewMac metallic Nitro lacquer for my color coats- do you think this stuff would work okay over that?
It can if you let the nitro fully dry first (takes a month or so), but I generally would suggest using acrylic or urethane under this product.
Thanks!
Wait a few hours at least before you bring it in if possible.
You can sand after a day or two, but I wouldn’t wet sand.
Brad Angove Ok thanks Brad!
You’re welcome.
I learn a lot of your videos, i´ve sprayed a couple of guitars, and i have much to learn :)
Keep the videos coming and i will fill my head with all info :)
I'm glad you like the videos. I'll keep them coming haha. Wouldn't want your head to go hungry!
If I’m using this clear coat over a hand painted acrylic design, would you recommend 6 coats? And how long between coats? I would need 2 cans? And do u plug the screw holes with anything? Thanks? You’re a wealth of information for this newbie!
If your design isn’t too textured 4 coats 15 minutes apart from 1 can might do the trick.
@@BradAngove Thank you so much Brad!
btw, do you have the video finishing that guitar? ( the one above) sanding, polishing?
Thanks
No, I sanded this finish back and did another paint job (or several) over top of it.
Thanks for the info man! I'm about to sculpt a biomechanical top piece for a guitar and im probably gonna use this to finish this! Would love to show you the end result.
Any issue with lines on painters tape for the neck?
I’m not sure what you mean. Like ridges after you remove the tape?
@@BradAngove Yeah! Or a film of the stickiness from the tape? I saw your video on using 2x gloss to do a stripe effect and you talked about the tape and how to peel it properly. Same method applied for this kind of gloss?
Well it can definitely leave ridges. I assume you’re not painting patterns with it though. For cavity edges etc. I often run a razor blade around the edge to prevent it from peeling off the areas where I want it.
@@BradAngove no just for the neck part of the finish. Awesome will do. Thanks for the help man! Id love to show you the end result once I'm done.
Do you have a video on how to build that handy holster/stand you are using? Of all the videos I've seen, that setup seems to provide the best access to all areas of the guitar, while holding it firmly in place. I find the hanging guitar body awkward when spraying the horns and sides.
I do. It’s an old video about making your own spray stand, although I now also have much newer videos with better stands that can be purchased.
Thanks for the video man, quick question what grit sandpaper would you use to scuff it up the next day and add a final coat? Also did you do any sanding or scuffing in between the first three coats?
I would use 800 grit the next day to prep for a final coat. No sanding between the first 3 since they're only 10-15 minutes apart.
@@BradAngove exact question and answer i was looking for! thanks!
Good advice. Warm the can.
Do you have any videos on how to remove lacquer paint bubbles or runs/ streaks from your guitar? I just did my first lacquer paint job on my guitar and I have some streaks/bubbles I want to remove. Please help!!!!
I have touched on it in a couple videos. Really you just let them dry fully and then scrape and sand them smooth.
@@BradAngove Do you have any videos on how to properly install pickups? Just curious. I am very curious about what kind of drill bit I need to use so I can screw in my humbucker into the wood.
You’re direct mounting them? Usually they don’t get screwed right into the wood.
Hey Brad!
So let's say I spray the body with this clear coat and am planning on spraying another coat 24 hours later. Am I expecting the first coat be be finger nail test ready or just dry to the touch, I don't really want to be putting another coat on if it's not ready!
Thank you.
It should be ready to essentially pass the fingernail test after 24 hours.
