Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
This is the followup to my series on how to do a frankenstrat paint job with spray cans. In this video I demonstrate how to get a professional looking finish using spray cans. I'm using a catalyzed polyurethane clear coat for this paint job. This is an automotive clear coat, that allows you to get a mirror shine for a clear that looks like glass. This stuff works on guitars, cars, helmets, bikes, etc.
Here is a kit page I set up with most of what you will need if you want to be able to get a beautiful finish with spray cans in either polyurethane or lacquer: kit.com/bradangove/get-a-prof...
Don't forget to ask your questions in the comment section.

Hey Brad, what would you recommend the best method would be for doing a neck thru guitar. I want to do the body crackle finish, but not the neck as I like it’s finish already. Just tape off at the heel? Thnx!
Yes, that’s about all you can do.
I appreciate the videos using spray cans for those of us who lack the money and/or space for paint spraying and the equipment necessary for it.
I’m glad you’re finding them useful.
@@BradAngove super helpful
I feel like that's the main reason why Brad's channel is growing so much. He shows how to do it when you are in fact not a professional
Yes, I agree! I’m not a professional and I’m only doing one guitar. This is good information!
@@BradAngove if you can and or want to, could make a video of how to reduce orange peel? All the videos I found were garbage and couldn’t get the desired result. :)
rattle can and hot water very good spread and no speckles in paint
I've been following a lot of your videos to learn the most I can about the processes. Your videos are by far the best available on UA-cam! Thanks again for all your insights!
Thanks Chris. Glad I could help.
Thanks Brad - please dont worry, its not a long preamble. This info is gold, and that's why we are here - to learn from you.
I'm glad you found it useful.
Brad, that looks like a pro finish sure. Another great tutorial thank you my friend.
for sure**
Thanks Jack, I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial.
I'm learning quite a lot with this series - well done !
I'm glad to hear it sam. Thanks for watching.
Great guy
Thanks Brad, I'm painting a bass in my basement and your videos have been super helpful. The final coats of paint are drying as I type and it's onto clear coat next. The results so far have been great, a couple of blemishes from where I didn't sand the wood down enough but overall it looks almost professional.
I’m glad to hear it’s going well
I always enjoy your relaxed approach to teaching. Thank you.
Thanks. I’m glad my style works for you.
honestly this video out of your vis has been the best and most informative for me. it's like learning to do a math problem then suddenly it all clicks lol. As i stated before with many questions about finishing (clear coating) a paint job with job and i believe my issues were not using a catalyzed polyurethane. Which I will now use on my one bass guitar i'm currently redoing (painting) i still have lots to learn. but thank you again
I'm very glad to hear that you've found this video helpful. It's certainly possible to get a beautiful finish with other spray cans, but this product is high quality and makes it considerably easier I think. Just make sure you protect yourself; it's more dangerous than your average spray can.
That finish is 100x better than Ed’s original Frankenstrat ever was.
It’s certainly glossier haha.
I learned so much off your videos and I've painted many guitars most with success. Thanks for these tutorials and hope to see more informing tutorials in the future.
I'm very glad to hear that. Thank you for watching.
Great video, I used this as a reference for clear coating my recent project. Spray technique and spread pattern was easy to see. I used a shimmer metallic Krylon can, which turned out great. Followed up with a cheapo gloss Krylon spray to keep it consistent. Ended up with around 6 coats as I started light and it's not high quality stuff. Looks great and I've just gotta wait for it to dry and get rid of some orange peel
+ZombicidalMan Excellent. I'm glad it went well for you.
I subscribed and watch his videos not for tutorials but just to see him 😂 😍
shouldv watch this first.. thanks for the video
+JOEL KIM You're welcome.
I’m prepping to paint the interior plastics of a project car I’m working on. These videos are teaching me a lot about painting. Thanks man.
I’m glad to hear it.
Brad, thanks for the best set of painting and finishing videos on UA-cam
Thanks for watching.
i have my guitar sanded down to wood(Sanded away everything..including wood sealer..) after a botched up frankenstrat paintjob....how can I do a natural finish on it ?
There are many ways to do that. Are you planning on doing it by hand, or would you prefer to go with spray cans?
@@BradAngove spray cans
Hello. I just painted a DIY guitar kit. I primed it then painted an abstract design with acrylic paint using a paintbrush. Do you think this product will work for the job? I did the whole guitar like it.
+Ninjor4 I guess it depends on what you use to protect it now.
Brad Angove sorry to keep bugging you but I'm confused a lil. I'm not using anything to protect now its just primed and painted how I said and sitting on paint my table lol. If you can recommend this or diff product would be good. This is my first time trying and I don't expect it to be perfect or anything. Thanks for vid and help.
+Ninjor4 ok, that does not sound like a durable finish at all. You haven't used any clear coat?
I think he means can he use the catalyzed lacquer in the video, over the acrylic paint.
I'm kind of just wondering if he has anything on there as an inter-coat. Doesn't sound like it though.
The stuff in the video is a catalyzed polyurethane. Catalyzed lacquer behaves somewhat differently, but may also work.
Hey Brad ....thanks for this video . I just recently redone my Strat N Stein (as I call it ) and used this clear coat over Duplicolor Universal black metallic and the finish is awesome . It is a realy hard finish and very very glossy to the point where I can see my reflection . I recommend this to any one out there it is well worth the price . Keep the videos coming .
Thank you. I'm glad to hear you had success with it.
This is truly great advice and a game changer for me. It looks easy enough to do, even for me.
bet the customer of that guitar didn't know it'd be a tribute to EVH...r.i.p..That clear coat looks great
haha loved the comment about old blokes disregarding modern tech. ive just sprayed my les paul with Rustoleum Satin Black, pretty happy with it. nice work too mate!
Thanks Brad I bought the clear coat.!!!
Omg a frankenstrat with a rosewood neck
Christian Bales been hitting the gym!
Thumbs up for me having a generic face haha.
ah Brad you know you are a hottie
Excellent!!! Thanks for the tip. We're enjoying all your videos during the coronoa lockdown!
Glad I could provide some entertainment.
@@BradAngove More like motivation! We appreciate all the tips and instruction. This is something we wanted to do for a while and getting into this hobby is one good side effect of the lockdown. Thanks for everything and stay safe up there!
Very nice! Thanks for the steady flow of informative vids.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Thanks, dude! I shall apply this technique on the guitar I'm working on now.
Excellent. I hope it goes well for you.
Thanks again Brad for a very helpful video - not the first time I've said so - I appreciate these informative tutorials. Cheers!
Thanks John. I’m glad you’re finding them useful.
Watching a second time because I’m about to do another attempt at SprayMax clear matte. The importance of a tack rag is underrated as well. Just tossed a half dozen cans, can’t believe I didn’t think of keeping good flow spray nozzles for future jobs. Great vid!
I hope your spray job goes well.
Trying now, used your link, and appreciating your direct video style!
I hope it goes well for you.
I used the spray max. thanks for info video
After accidentally buffing through two coats of Rustoleum Auto Enamel, on my practice wood I think I've decided 2K is the way to go. Thanks for making these videos, Brad. You're helping me rescue my first guitar, and glamming the heck out of it for fun'sies.
Glad I could help
Easily the best channel for spray can diy.
Thank you
big thanks to you, i was wondering if i should do it on my les paul and you gave me the final idea
I hope it goes well for you.
@@BradAngove thank you, appreciate it :)
Brad, great videos you produce. I'm one of the 45+ year old guys who is learning how to do all of these things here. Wish I had UA-cam around 20 years ago. I've painted two motorcycles, and now I'm fiddling with repainting two 30+ year old guitars I've had since high school. Thanks for your tips. I don't have the pro equipment many do, and videos like this are really helpful.. Enjoyed your debate with the troll below! -Jeff
Haha thanks Jeff. I’m glad you’re finding the videos helpful.
Well im surprised its far better than i expected thanks for sharing this video
Thanks for watching.
thanks ive been wanting to try it
Great vids!!! If you don't already know, to get a smoother spray out of any spray can... POut them in hot/warm water before shaking... Works great! Again, great vid Brad!!!
Yes, I have a video on that as well haha.
Thank you for the video. I appreciate the effort, and yeah... that's a fine looking finish!
Thank you! I just did a guitar in nitro and it came out spectacular but man did it take forever to do.
I’m glad it turned out well.
That looks awesome! I’m gonna try using that clear coat.
Solid choice. Just make sure you wear a respirator.
Nice that looks good thank you for the tips especially because I'm planning on the building I own guitar and I was wondering how they was doing it so there you go awesome! That's really that's close for being professional and being the amateur!
Always great info Brad - thanks so much!
Cheers!
All your videos are fantastic, and as far as 'talking too much' is concerned, the level of detail and the understandable explanations are well worth listening to.
Thanks
Thanks Ted.
Best looking one yet! Great job!
Thanks!
awesome results! I didn't realize you had to spray so close to the surface, I've been doing it wrong..
You just need to get decent flow. Have a look at my super old video on how to get an even coat of paint with spray cans if you want more info on that aspect.
Beautiful work!
Thank you!
Great job,Looks so professional
+Lorrie Deal Thank you. I'm glad you think so.
awesome work you do Brad....
Thank you sir.
That looks REALLY GOOD at 8:00
Going to give spraying a bass a go. I’m by no means an artist but I hope I can lay down a decent coat of paint! Thanks for all the videos 👍👍
I hope it goes well for you. Thanks for watching.
got the spray max clearing a sparkle pink guitar that has been drying for a month ,rainy weather ,but thanks so much for this video the guitar im doing is a tribute to a young girl that took her life ,so I want it to be as good as I can make it ,sparkle turned out awesome gonna spray 2 coats of clear and then put the decals on 2 coat of clear and clear over them wish me luck ,just waiting for a decent day
I hope it goes well!
I used this, very pleased
Glad to hear it.
Thank you for sharing!
Yo, such a good video mang. So underrated 👌🙌🏼👏🙏
Thank you for this video!
I am painting my Jackson Dinky with a blue-white crackle finish (Waiting in my garage to get dry) and already bought some 2k clear coat
Excellent. Let me know how it goes!
Brad Angove I recorded some steps of my repainting process, I hope I can make a good video out of it.
Right now it is still drying
Cool; I'm excited to see how it turns out.
Your videos are cool. Thanks mate
Just discovered your channel. Thanks for all the tutorials!
Welcome aboard
Hi there, this is a great video, I learned a lot of things. Thank you so much and god bless, Mike/Canada
Thank you Mike, and thanks for watching.
It's a great finish. I'm one of these guys that has been doing rattle can finishes for decades. I'm living in japan at present and one of those cans is 150 bucks (US). I poop you not! I had to buy a compressor and a gun to use urethane and epoxy finishes on my guitar projects. The funny thing is, the compressor and spray gun cost me less than one can of that finish in Japan.
That’s insane!
Thank You Brad Angove
You are very welcome
Here we go! Now im going out to my garage and gonna put some clear 2k on ma stringy instrument!
I hope it goes well.
The Gluboost repair area didn't crack, just looked very uneven, with a "cratered" (i.e. surface of the Moom) appearance. Anything but smooth!
Thanks for your thoughts,
John
Great work bro!
Thanks man!
been watching your videos, my brother and I are going to be staining and clear coating a guitar i got off of a buddy!!!
Very good !
Excellent tutorial sir! Thank you for the valuable information!
+Jason Bossardt you're quite welcome. Use it wisely haha.
I do have one question. Will the spraymax work over top an already existing lacquer clear coat? It's only one layer of clear lacquer. I stripped down an old guitar of mine, and did some artwork on it, and applied one layer of clear lacquer. It looks ok, but when you get close, you can see a slight orange peel effect on it. The clear coat has been on it for a little over a month now.
+Jason Bossardt If it's been on there a month and it feels nice and hard, you should be able to go ahead. Sometimes things go wildly wrong when you mix paints, but I've put poly over lacquer like that before and never had a problem.
Beautiful
Spray Max 2k lacquer is a good, proper activated finish, goes on well, produces an excellent finish. I've used them to spray plastic car bumpers, no issues, no cracking either, and remains slightly flexible. The best spray can 2k finish I've found. Makes like 'HB 2k' are crap, they aren't a 2k finish from a can, they are a crap 1k, trades description breach. Use a proper respirator/mask, at least a Gerson type disposable. For small jobs I highly recommend Spray Max. Over the years, I've converted to proper compressor and spray gun.
Good advice. Warm the can.
I learn a lot of your videos, i´ve sprayed a couple of guitars, and i have much to learn :)
Keep the videos coming and i will fill my head with all info :)
I'm glad you like the videos. I'll keep them coming haha. Wouldn't want your head to go hungry!
The Strat turned out sweet! I actually like that the paint scheme is one off and not an exact copy of EVH's Frankenstrat.
Thank you.
Hi Brad, you're doing a fantastic job ! You giv3e me tons of inspiration and as soon as I did my "frankenstein" I gonna send you a picture ! thanx a lot
Glad to hear you’re finding the content worthwhile.
@@BradAngove you’re IMO kinda a legend for still answering questions on your 5 yo video. You said you could probably do 3 guitars, one can, is that still about right? Assuming metallic or color shift, no glitter, no decals.
Yeah I’d still say that’s about right with this type of paint. If your surface isn’t quite as smooth it will take more to get it evened out of course.
Brad, I really appreciate your tutorials! I’ve done quite a bit of painting, made a whole bunch of mistakes and never knew why things didn’t work out or how to do it correctly. I just bought a can of 2K clear and plan on giving my new guitar build a clear coat tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for all your help. Keep the vids coming 🤘🏻
Looking forward to hearing how it turned out.
How did it go?
Thanks a lot Brad, then that is what I'm going to do. I haven't ordered the blue metallic from Retranch yet " temporary closed for inventory " so I'll add a can of clear lacquer to my order. I do appreciate your help. Ted
You’re welcome Ted.
THAT'S GOOD WORK MY DUDE. NICE! 😆
+soul less Thanks!
Great Video as usual.
+Mrtokken88 Thanks. I appreciate that.
Very helpful 👍
Great video bud
Thanks
Really nice job buddy.
Thank you sir.
Good video.
😀 1:11 "One of my hoses are leaking".... 24 seconds later... 1:35 😀 Be careful man! By the way, about the coat. Spray can or not, we can always paint a layer more and wet sand the surface to en even smoother finish. Pretty easy and it makes even better results in the reflection of light on the finish. Great videos buddy! Thanks for sharing them!
Nice!
cool great job.
Brad, your videos are always a delight, thank you! I have a question though: does this 2k spray need sanding and polishing or you get a mirror finish without any other treatment? Cheers, all the best!
The 2k tends to self-level fairly well, but it you want it dead flat you will need to go through the sanding and polishing process.
You're f*****g awesome!
Thanks man.
You are an Awesome teacher !!...........................Tx !!

Thanks Lou, I'm glad you like my teaching style.
nice!! thanks
I just used it on my goalie mask!!! 3.5 coats!! Currently looks just like what my pro auto body shop does...we will see tomorrow after it’s done curing I guess...
Using one of these cans right now. A word of caution when activating the can is to wear protective gear during this phase EYES. The can can sometimes spray out of the bottom.
Damn man. I’ve never heard of one doing that. Everything ok?
Apparently not 🤣
So it would appear.
Awesome looking clear, I was torn between a rub on poly or spray. Not anymore, spray and polish it is.
Solid choice.
Thanks for great videos. how long does it take to dry clear coat (regular, and tgis one in video) to be safe to wet sanding ang mirror polishing.
Cool!
Brad sometime try simtec polyester sander sealer and simtec thick top coat clear. it sands really easy buffs out to a mirror finish and is 90% the hardness of glass
I’m familiar with the winter, but haven’t used it. I need to find a paint gun that I really don’t like first haha.
... I didn't know Christian Bale had such an interest in guitars.
Following your videos for a project of my own. Good stuff!
yes, if its a 2 k clear in a can it can put on a 2k finish like a gun... depending on the quality of clear wether in a can or mixed its the same ... difference is you can always spray a better finish if you have a better painter.. yes a better painter could always make a nicer job using better spray gun setup... but for a small job like that anyone can make it look nice... better quality clear could be put in a spray can also... only real difference is limited fan air adjustments..
I love watching your videos I've learned so much. Just an idea bud you can make a cheap booth using pvc tubing with the pvc joints.
Yeah, the pvc and poly booths are worthwhile. I would probably do a chloroplast one if I figured I needed one. I like them a little better.
@@BradAngove I was just thinking it's quick and cheap to throw one up. Of course your right the others are better. Thank you for your very informative videos, you so deserve more subs 👍
Thank you. The shop actually has a spray booth now that I use occasionally.
@@BradAngove Man I wish one day I have my own shop to work in. I'm actually a car mechanic but things are so expensive in London these days. I guess never say never mate.
This shop certainly doesn’t belong to me. That would be awesome though!
just finished my clearcoat with the 2k. awesome stuff, beautiful results.
can you get me you link on sanding and polishing after using this product?
