- In this video I show you how to do an awesome relic paint job with spray cans. We're working on a telecaster body in this one, and using some nice toner lacquer to get a beautiful vintage amber tone.

Gotta love alder. Such a nice wood to work with, especially when it comes to finishing. Alder isn't nearly as exciting as maple, but it isn't as expensive either. The amber looks great, and I really like how it really warmed up the overall look and made the grain lines pop. I don't know if I could have resisted putting a 2 color burst on it. Can't wait to see what is in store for this one next.

I have 2 relic guitars one that took 30 years to do it was brand new when I was 15 not now. All bashed and dinged but it looks awesome. The other took me a week to do and it’s a fun little project to do I hope you enjoy it Brad...... love the colour the amber is amazing. Keep up the good work

Hey Brad! I'm one of the people who has been pestering you for a relic, so thanks for doing this. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out!😁. However, having now seen that body with the fantastic depth of colour, I'm not sure I would be able to start messing with it!! You've given me quite a problem now. I am building a "partscaster" and intended to do a nice light relic. Now I have seen this, I just want to strip it right down to the wood, spray it amber and clear coat it! I am now officially confused 😵 and may never forgive you for this!!! (Hahaha!)

Nice one, Brad! after I messed up my spray can paint job I decided to give my yellow Pj a relic work with sand paper and a knife, next time I'll be doing this instead.
How did it turn out?
well, it was my first paint job ever so I can see a couple of spots that I should pay attention next time(like spraying techniques, layers and stuff) but as a project I think it turned out great. it got me started haha

To do a relic job just use acetone and dye on a rag.

With the guitar laying flat on the table, when do I flip it over to paint the other side? Once each coat is dry or what?
I suggest you hang the guitar and spray it all at once.
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge! I'm completely new to all this and I'm think of getting one of those DIY guitar kits, but I don't know how to go about this. I'm thinking spray cans. It's a unfinished basswood body, should I start off with a sealer just like you did here? I also want a turquoise like color to relic a bit, so should the color go on next and then the lacquer? Thanks!
Sand it smooth and then seal it and go ahead with the turquoise lacquer followed by a satin clear lacquer.

Is there any difference between nitrocellulose lacquer spray and clear matte lacquer spray? And if ai can't get nitrocellulose type, what can I use to substitute?
Lacquer is a slightly broader term. It’s probably the same. If not it may be acrylic lacquer, which is also fine but won’t age the same way.
Hey Brad, I'm thinking of refinishing my squier vintage modified precision bass with a nitro white, just because it will look badass when it eventually relics. Since it's a poly finish to start off with, should I remove the current finish completely and then do another sealer before doing the nitro, or if I take the finish completely off, am I fine to do the nitro over the naked wood? It depends a bit on what type of wood it is. Generally though nitro will soak into bare wood quite a bit, so a sealer will make the process faster and easier.
Hello Brad, How long between coats on the sealer and the lacquer? Thanks again man.
About 45 minutes on the sealer and 4 hours on this lacquer to a max of 3 coats per day.
Where did you get the Telecaster body? I noticed the string through. Solo doesn't offer the string through feature on their kits (unless this is a REALLY recent addition).
I actually picked it up from a viewer/client. Not entirely sure where it came from.
I don’t think Solo offers string through. I’ll have to put together a video on drilling them.
They don't at present. A video would be greatly appreciated.

I want to do a Crack finish but my guitar has a Poly finish...
How I can do the crack effect if I have a Poly finish in my guitar?

The best way to go about this is to take the poly off your guitar and paint it with nitro.
Is that work for acrylic spray cans?
This is a nitrocellulose based lacquer. Acrylic will work much the same up to this point. What Brad said during the video rings true. Poly and acrylic doesn't relic very well, you can relic it, but relic'ing poly or acrylic will never look as natural as nitro.

@@firdaushaji2638 realistically, you can do whatever you want.. Not trying to be coy in my reply. The point I was making is acrylics and polys don't wear or show wear like a nitro based paint does. Polys and acrylics are harder finishes and more resilient. You CAN artificially age them. However, they typically don't look naturally aged. And IMO spray is best, as it's easier to get more even/uniform applications of coats/layers.
How I relic: stain, don’t let it dry, let lacquer eat at the stain
