I really appreciate the cultural context on the reason for the initial popularity of ground beef and hamburger helper. Thank you for that!

Absolutely love the idea of taking childhood favorites and giving them a better more grown up chef flare!!
Okay very impressed. Homemade friggin pasta, steak ground up at home. Funny part is he’s using dollar store paprika bottles to store his spices 😂
It takes an hour or two making homemade pasta that he does but doesn’t take 30 seconds to label his spice jars😂
    Love it.

Food memories from childhood are the best one of mine being a batch of grandma's pinto beans simmering on the stove and cornbread fresh out of the oven. When I went in the Army and came home on leave you can guess what was on the stove. ;)

I remember Hamburger Helper from the early 1970’s. It didn’t taste great to me but it sure did smell good, the box made lots of pasta and it was THE COMFORT FOOD of it’s time. Since then I learned that I could add ground beef to anything to make a meal. Great video!

I remember cheeseburger HH as having a saltier taste when I was a kid; it's possible that the manufacturer reduced the sodium content in the packaged sauce years later. The end consumer could always add seasoning to taste.

It's 100% less salty and also less cheesy. They changed the recipe a few years ago which is also when they took out the artificial colors and msg and stuff. We bought some at the start of the pandemic and I discovered that I have to actually add salt and cheese (and a little seasoning) to it now

I still eat hamburger helper regularly. But I do make adjustments.. I season my beef as it cooks. Use less water and more milk or evaporated milk sometimes. And add cheese and more seasoning and green onions to my personal bowl. .
The box actually says to add tomatoes onions etc to make it better

Years ago, we ate a lot of Hamburger Helper, because my hubby was in the military and the box of HH cost us about 50 cents at the commissary. It was an easy, cheap way to stretch a pound of hamburger. I hated eating it, because that meal was very salty. If I knew then what I know now, I would've added more dry macaroni shells to the mix. Today, I would have to be pretty desperate before I would ever eat another bite of HH. 🤢 Your homemade version looks delicious.❤❤❤

Thank you for the easy pasta recipe/demonstration! I have been doing this, but with dry pasta and store-ground beef for years! My partner bought the actual "Hamburger Helper" last week and though it was quicker (and cheaper given prices of good cheese), we all prefer my version. Yours looks delicious! Btw, what was the sauce you splashed in just before simmering to thicken?
