Way to go Classy. I really thought that Dolby Vision IQ would only adjust the brightness according to lighting conditions, but as you’ve shown, it’s also adjusting shadow detail. As you pointed out, this makes more sense in a bright environment, so using Dolby Vision IQ in daytime viewing can be useful.
About time some who other techno dad has pointed out the differences between Dolby vision and HDR , Great content .
Nice video. So the Sammy QN95C is second in my pick now...
Fantastic overview and comparison Classy. Love my Sony A80J with DV Dark setting (Reference Creators intent setting) when playing a movie and TV.
Great video Classy. Absolutely love your statement “HDR content is designed to be viewed in a very dark room”. I have to force SDR for most of my viewing due to lighting conditions.
How do you force sdr on netflix dolby vision content? I am not able to do it on my x90j.
@@rohandebnath3525 disable it with external streamer
I stream everything through my Apple TV 4K. In the Apple TV 4K setup menu for Audio/Video, you can choose to disable HDR and only allow SDR to stream.
@@rohandebnath3525 hope this helps
Great video classy 👍
Thanks for the comparisons, done really well. A htpc with madvr or Kruger would blow the difference away though
IQ is great with changes in light conditions I love it.
The difference between basic HDR and DV is quite noticeable in my Sony X900H. I use DV bright mode whenever possible.
I have a Sony A80J and I check both Dolby Vision Bright and Dark as sometimes it's calibrated for Dark and actually puts out a brighter picture.
House of The Dragon is one example off the top of my head.
i like the DV doing tbh
Great video you now fix your previous mistake about dolby vison it's super important
Thanks Classy!
hey Classy,
do you think the A90j does Dolby Vision correctly?
Facts upon facts dropped here Classy. The amount of time I have heard this, HDR10+ is the same as Dolby Vision, oh my Samsung tv is bright I don't need Dolby Vision , is beyound believe. It like people are trying to justify their purchases, so will make every excuse there is to make themselves feel better, knowing their set doesn't support Dolby Vision. People need to stop accepting the bear mininum and start asking questions so companies like Samsung will stop getting away with thinking Dolby Vision is not needed.
But technically aren't they the same? there both dynamic which is why both Dolby vision and HDR10+ beats HDR10 So..... 🤨
@@hypno17 not really, HDR10+ is Samsung stubbornly trying to tell everyone they don’t need Dolby Vision but they do and there isn’t enough content supporting their HDR10+. Furthermore their version is way too over brighten, that not what it was meant to be.
@@TheGodfather1022 Oh gotcha.
@@hypno17 no worries
@@hypno17 On the creator side, DV has a huge toolset of options available to creators that HDR10+ does not.
Excellent Classy!
Thank you, Classy! Awesome, per usual. Do you have a sense yet about how meaningful the difference will be between last year's a95k, G2 and this year's a95l and G3?
Higher brightness capability, but will depend on the content how visible that change is.
@@ClassyTechCalibrations Thank you for the reply. I will be buying over the next month or so. Leaning A95K. I will use your affiliate link for that purchase. Already a subscriber.
Do Calman custom tone mapping curves affect Dolby Vision too? I’m finding a lot of DV content is too dark on my LG A1, especially if it’s mastered dim.
Dolby Vision with the proper DV calibration File is the best. People saying you don't need dolby vision...
Do you know if the Sony A80L does Dolby Vision correctly?
I think DV is a great feature when done correctly. I always use DV using internal apps and 4k discs on my Sony A80J. However, I believe that DV Bright and DV Cinema Home on LG is crucial for best viewing experience. I would never use it with DV Dark.
Don't know about Oled, but on Sony LCD, DV Dark with moderate ambient light is best preset. DV bright can look good on some shows tho.
I even tried DV bright but lowered the brightness, still Dv dark was just better.
@@bdbestxyzIII I could see DV dark being better on LCD. Oled is too dark though.
Respect the consistency, also would love to hear your opinion on Sonys new lineup for this year. Specifically interview with Sony and Brian Tech
💯 ✊
* Hulu has HDR10+ and looks great. I use this service a lot
Nice content classy see I want to know why the qn95b versus the s95b the color volume is different and the coverage is different but they both using quantum dot color filter very surprising
Because applying QD to an LCD isnt as effective.
Thanks for this. Now I know my new tv will be either G3 or 95L with dolby vision. Im confused with what DV IQ Precision is? Is it just another setting for Dolby Vision ?
It’s an AI enhanced dynamic setting basically and for a discerning viewer does indeed make quite some distinguishable difference in mostly detail clarity and pop which really gives a wow factor even after regular and consistent viewing of this wow factor type of content
Nice video DV can could be great if done right. LG does DV better the HDR10. We need a Samsung TV vs LG DV for true test.
I would say we need a A95L comparison similar to this. Comparing HDR10 and DV on a display that is already capable of properly rendering 1,000 nit HDR10 correctly without clipping
@@stephenpatterson8056 No OLED can do 1000 nit content without tone mapping, and very few LCDs can. OLEDs luminance drops in higher APL scenes.
@@ClassyTechCalibrations True but very little real content out there is pushing full screen luminance that high. And I thought even last year's QD-OLEDs handled that better and this year's should be even further improved. I was mainly speaking to the majority of content which only uses those 1,000 nits for pops of brightness here and there. Which are areas where tone mapping tends to stumble and make stuff look a bit weird
I believe this year even Classy should be teaming up and siding with Team Sony, due to 120 HZ Dolby Vision Gaming and much higher peak Brightness.
G3 just being a brighter G2 (from all the indicators I've gathered so far) will be a quite boring TV as it won't be able to reproduce QD Oled colors.
Samsung S95C - the disappointing Rtings review that was just released, indicating that SDR Brightness is lower than S95B, PQ EOTF Tracking actually worse this year + some other minor downgrades and plus no improvements in Processing at all, means still shitty Low-bit content experience
I was firmly set on trying to give Samsung a chance this year, but now my eyes are fully set on the - what looks to be a quite epic TV - Sony A95L.
You can adjust the roll offs on the LG's thru calman right? Would that allow you to retain more detail in the highlights closer to DV, or would it still be too far off.
All roll-off to 100% (no roll-off) for the game mode is what you are looking for.
You can adjust them but they would still be static, so you either get more detail with lower luminance or you clip with higher luminance.
@@ClassyTechCalibrations Facts that I tested myself 100%
My first TV is an s95b and im pretty happy except Dolby Vision Fomo. Im just 20 tho and once I’ll move out I’ll treat myself to the Sony flagship
Bad choice
DV IQ on my Hisense OLED is locked to soap opera motion, I hear it's the same on Panasonic OLEDs as well. Is that the "feature" of DV IQ? I know these OLEDs are not sold in the US but DV IQ settings should be universal.
same on lg you have to disable auto genre selection in AI settings. It's locking the Motion settings its shouldn't be like this by default.
I think we should get a new calibration standard for home use.content is just too dark for general viewing
100% agree
Agree too. All the movies are just too dark.
For movies, HDR is really bad. Any 1080p Blu ray disk will destroy HDR movies being streamed.
@@bdbestxyzIII I agree. I'm still using my 1080p plasma because it just looks right. There is no black crush and the average picture level is fantastic in a dim room
You think it's dark because OLED tvs are utter trash because they are way too dim you can't see anything. Sony Mini LED blows OLED tvs out of the water because you get the brightness
HDR10 is good enough for 99% of people.
Can l please ask is there a visible difference between HDR10 and HRR10+. THANKS!
Fantastic video. When you refer to earlier TVs that did not do DV correctly are you referring to TVs that only do “player-led” DV, like the Sony X950H? How would a TV with player-led (low latency) DV have looked compared to the HDR10 and DV modes you showed in this video? Thanks!
No, I was mostly referring to the the A80J/A90J/etc
@@ClassyTechCalibrations i didn’t realize the A80J and A90J DV implementations were incorrect. And on my other question do you think a player-led DV TV like the X950H would fair any differently from the DV you showed in this video? How so? Thanks!
@@DarkKnight-gw4gw Player led is subpar, not really worth it.
@@ClassyTechCalibrations bummer. I have the X950H so I guess I’m outta luck. 😕
@@DarkKnight-gw4gw doesn't mean it will look bad, but you will probably have a better experience with HDR10 in that case.
On LG C2 with Dolby Vision on Series X, the brighter EOTF is really useful in almost all HDR games which have in game setting sliders. It just looks too dark on HGIG even in dark room. And DTM just blows the specular highlights. And this was all calibrated based on your settings.
Much Appreciated, in many cases games with in game HDR sliders look near Real Life compared to HGIG. But the brighter EOTF case is apparently only true for games with in game HDR sliders and not for the Auto-HDR or Xbox HDR Settings utilising games.
LG C2 55” INCH EVO
Agreed. HGIG sucks for games in my experience. It's dark and dull. DTM is the way to go.
true
HGIG too dark on my lg g2
Imo dtm is destroying the contrast impact and highlights pop. Unless the game have a bad hdr or lacking settings, i'ts hgig ftw if your room is dark enough. DTM is usefull in older hdr games that only have a paper white slider for hdr. Good exemple are Far Cry 5 /New Dawn. Without DTM there's a lot of clipping.
There’s a distinct difference between the Dolby vision on a Sony tv and an LG tv. The LG DV content seems far better. I’ve had both the Sony and Lg oleds.
Why would you compare hdr10 with dv. Why not hdr10+
I must have the option of both DV and HDR10, Samsung was my go to brand for some time but them not having this option cancels them out all together for me. DV for movies, everyday TV and HDR for gaming on LG C2
You lose out on the brightness
@@NexGenTek The brightness debate is a preference honestly so it’s great for me on LG even in well lit room, I still end up turning it down quite a bit. Did the same on Samsung. I have sensitive eyes and prone to headaches on overly bright screens.
What is your take with comparison LG 3 to the Sony A95L in Doble vision let me know thanks
both still are about to get released, bro ....
A95L not before June/July ...
I'm really new to this kind of technology from plasma tvs. I have a Hisense 65U8H and when I get 4K videol, it's all greenish and pinkish. Any suggestions?
Sounds like you're trying to play dolby vision content on a tv that doesn't have dolby vision. How are you playing the 4k video?
@@RonnRicco thru IPTV streaming and my android box supports 4K. But 1080 streams are very nice in color.
You are not going to notice the difference until it is side by side comparison.
I get sick of anything has Dolby, the best thing they know is producing a delay in the picture, and for Atmos delay in the sound
I recommend using the original format for picture and sound
Classy dv is alot better check marvels shows like daredevil it's give you alot of details it's about content
Third!
You’re actually 4th
Any birdie happened to whisper in your ear when we are going to start seeing DV in games? 😅😎😌
We already do, its just not what some people were expecting out of it.
@@ClassyTechCalibrations Yea, I get what you mean. I actually forgot Xbox has it on some games. I'm on PC, the only time I got it to work was in Mass Effect Andromeda, on the LG 42 C2, couldn't tell the difference between DV and HDR10
Is DV quality the same regardless of tv manufacturer?
😂
No the video processor matters which is why Sony tvs are head and shoulders the best while LG is trash. Sony invented the standard for color spectrum in tvs and calibration.
@@ScruffyWarlord I've heard from a few tv enthusiasts that LG processing is very near Sony level.
@@x1mmx LG is trash. Their video processing is a masquerade. Ask anyone who works at best buy, the number one OLED that breaks down are the LG Oleds. People buy them because they cannot afford sony oleds.
@@x1mmx closer every year for half the price in canada, better gaming features and 4 full hdmi 2.1 ports. ;)
DV IQ looks the best and much sharper then other set. Aren't the black level not effected on IQ when it's pitch dark ?
If Hdr10+ was the better format, than why all the big streaming platforms and cinemas play in Dolby Vision? Samsung is just stubborn, just how lg was back in the days when they had no DTS!
Most streaming contents have DV no HDR+. That’s the answer.
All this video has taught me is that I'm not very colour literate 😂
TLDR; Dolby Vision is goat.
well i dont watch movies in slow mo so it doesnt matter to me
all looks the same to me, pulling hairs tbh.. w/e
How do Sony OLEDs compare vs LG? Why is LG handling DV well …or , what are they doing well vs Sony? Ive heard you recommend hdr10>DV for Sony OLEDs a80j+k.
Its a long discussion but is more accurate with DV and has better support for it, as well as better calibration support for DV. The A95K addressed most of this though.
Do you still recommend HDR10 over DV Dark on the A80J you calibrated for me?
