A bit more context for anyone interested.

For the last two years, I’ve worked at Indeed. It has been a good job, and I liked the work and my coworkers. The company laid off 15% of the workforce last year, and I thought we were through the worst of it. But on Monday, I was laid off with about 1,000 other people. That’s a further 8% of the company. About half of my team was laid off.
My wife and I had bought our new house the previous Friday and moved in over the weekend. It’s not an ideal time to get laid off, but we will manage. For now, we’re thinking about this line from Epictetus: “Some things are in our control and others not.”
And to add just two more notes. I am looking for more stable work too - I won’t pursue UA-cam to the detriment of my family. And for those asking about a book: stay tuned.

@@darklysm8345 I wouldn’t say “hurt” but more accurately AI has “fundamentally changed” the IT profession profoundly. One of my specialties is in automation and orchestration of cloud operations. Many years spent working on how to improve the code that makes cloud infrastructure function more efficiently under heavy workloads and high user demand. Now, an intelligent twelve year old can use ChatGPT, or any other AI program, to auto-generate Powershell and Python scripts that work out of the box. The challenge for people like me is to understand where I need to re-focus and up-skill to be marketable in terms of IT employment. When I left my last job our office secretary was handling M365 tasks on behalf of the company including playing with InTune policies. (Let that sink in for a moment.) I always welcome advancements in technology and have never felt threatened by any of it. 70% of my skills are now handled by AI. Scratching my head on trying to figure out where the next “need” is and how to be the kind of engineer to meet that need. I still have a lot of years to work.

    • @skullchimes
      @skullchimes 3 місяці тому

@@darklysm8345 I looked into it briefly, and I don't believe that it's just "helping people focus on higher-value tasks", since people still gotta work it. Bet a bunch are being laid off cuz with AI, IT work is supposed to be going quicker which means they would need less work force...

I wanted to say that in the video "books that influenced my life" (or something like that), I was thrilled to find out you had the same faith background as me (Orthodox).
I'd be highhhhhly interested in watching some version of apologetics and or analyses of the Orthodox Faith (and Christianity in general) from you. I think you'd put out phenomenal content, and doing round tables with the likes of What Do You Meme, Apologetics Roadshow, Apostate Prophet (often streams with David Wood/Apologetics Roadshow) would I think lead to some very interesting conversations.

I know exactly how you feel at this moment. I graduated college in 2008 right when the recession hit. I worked hard and finally found my forever job at LM in 2017. I was laid off during Covid. Then got another forever job doing controls work. I was laid off again last summer. I said screw it and started my own lawn care company as dumb as that sounds and couldn’t be happier. Do I have to think a ton? Nope. Do I work hard? Yep. I don’t have to worry about being laid off again or relying on big business to provide for me. They can suck it!
Again, I know how you feel more than you’re currently willing to understand atm. But, it will get better! Treat yourself and go concur!!!!

    I’m sorry to hear that.
I experienced something very similar at the very tail end of 2022, I was laid off from my remote job I had for several years when the first rounds of layoffs in the industry had started back then.
It was brutal and I’m still recovering.
    Praying. 🙏🏻

Wishing you the best in this transition. Congratulations on purchasing a home in Austin. Even if you do secure another tech position, this transition will still be a great opportunity to show proof of concept of what can happen with your channel and writing endeavors if you devote more time and energy to them. Good luck!

Really sorry to hear you got laid off. I got laid off from AWS last April along with 9,000 other people so I can empathize.
One idea that I'd find interesting is some video series of walkthroughs of your favorite pieces of philosophy. You've mentioned in other videos that you took a seminar class on The Nicomachean Ethics where each class you'd focus on just a few pages. This might be a bad idea for a UA-cam series but I'd personally think it would be interesting to have that kind of seminar in a series from you and some other deep dives into philosophy that you've found particularly compelling.

I also work at tech and layoffs are so common it's really scary. I was a "survivor" of multiple massive waves of layoffs through 3 years now where almost always I couldn't predict who is next to be fired. Best people I've worked with were laid off.
I'm saying this to tell that the layoff doesn't mean you're bad at your job, or you failed. You can be the best at your job and still be laid off. My bestest wishes of luck in this kind of situation, I really hope everything will go the best way for you my friend!✌

A friend of mine went the same path. she was divorced and bought a new house and the very same day she signed for the house, she went to work and got fired (and she's on her sixtie's). but, as you, she stayed positive thinking ways to go on... and she find a better job, better consideration and more money... so, you never know... you won't find a better job if you don't get fired or leave the old one... or problably you become your own boss....

Damn, man, I’m sorry 💔 I’m going through my own hardship at the moment and can’t contribute $$ right now. But I’ve always enjoyed your videos and will continue to watch and 👍 all your videos, and continue to share them with friends.
I love your content and all that you do. I really hope that you’re able to make the money you need so you can continue to make your content and share your thoughts and perspectives with the world. We need more thoughtful and thought provoking people like you on UA-cam.
I love your reading lists, your deep dives, and philosophy/ethics videos. I also like your podcast too. Would love to see more close reading/deep dive type stuff.
I bet you’d be great at interviewing too! Have you ever considered having a guest (perhaps an author or expert) and having an extended format discussion (like 30-90 minutes or something)? I would love to see that!
Also, you have a great voice. Have you considered doing audiobooks? I listen to a ton of audiobooks and would definitely listen to you reading fiction and/or nonfiction.
Just some thoughts. Can’t wait to see what you do! Wishing you all the best! 🙏

Man, your recommendations have so much overlap with my taste that you’re basically my go-to review guy now. That has effectively saved me hours of time and at least as much monetary investment as the donation.
Thanks for the work that you do, and I’m genuinely sorry to hear that you’re facing the difficult uncertainty of being laid off. As a fellow academic turned engineer working in Austin’s tech scene, I can empathize with the position you’re in (although I was a cognitive science guy, not strictly philosophy). The uncertainty can be especially difficult to wrestle with as men who are fathers. Keep your head up and try not to mistakenly internalize factors outside of your control or assign them false senses of meaning.
Here’s my genuine hope that you can have all the forces of the universe align to generate a platform for your successful career (UA-cam or otherwise). Cheers.

I hope you are doing well during this tough time. I am in a similar boat. Within 6 months of moving into my new place, I was laid off. The silver lining was that I was laid off from a job that I was not really all into (albeit it paid the bills).
I too am embarking on a new career path. I wish you all the best, and look forward to supporting you the best I can as my situation improves.
