Getting Fired From My School - Warren Smith

  • Last Monday I was fired from my school after 4 years of teaching. I recorded this the following day in order to share my perspective - honestly & in good faith - in order to move forward and put this experience behind me. I have no desire to cause complications or bring unwanted attention to the school, so I will not divulge anything beyond that. It is important to me to be able to speak truthfully and honestly about one of the most challenging periods in the story of my life, in order to move onto a new chapter. I hope we all can respect one another's privacy, freedom of speech, and treat each other with dignity - even in challenging times.

To do what? Massachusetts operates under at-will employment, meaning employees can be terminated with or without cause, unless there's an employment contract in place. Unless you're fired due to being under a protected class i.e race, gender or disability then theres nothing he can do. They can fire him because he takes sugar in his coffee if they want, thats what 'at will' means. They dont even need to give a reason and before anyone starts with 'but muh first amendment', that only applies if the Government is restricting your speech.Basically the school didnt like being linked with him and felt it made them look bad so they offloaded him. It is what it is and they perfectly entitled to do so. Oh and as far as the computer goes? Anything on there is automatically their property and you dont have any right to privacy on it as its owned by them. You learn that very quickly working in a basic ass call center, you should NEVER use a company PC for personal activity. The PC and the data on it belongs to them.

    • @longWriter
      @longWriter 4 місяці тому +1

      You're a philosophy professor?
Maybe you can give me a quick critique of a philosophical proof of God's existence that I, honestly, just came up with for the fun of it. You could call it "The Gamer's Proof that God Exists", and it involves about three different variations of a simple story.
Variation 1: If Sonic the Hedgehog gets the Chaos Emerald, he'll become omnipotent. But the Emerald is in a vault that Sonic can't get into. But Sonic has an idea how to get in, the first step of which is: Sonic waits. And then, the thing that Sonic is waiting for happens: a version of Sonic from the future appears outside the vault, holding the Chaos Emerald, and with a wave of his hand, future-Sonic uses his omnipotent powers to teleport present-Sonic into the vault. Sonic grabs the Emerald, and becomes omnipotent. The first thing Sonic does with his new powers is teleport himself a minute into the past, just outside the vault, where he teleports past-Sonic into the vault so past-Sonic can get the Chaos Emerald and become...well, himself. It's a classic bootstrap time-paradox, and the final result of it is that Sonic has the Chaos Emerald, and is now omnipotent.
Variation 2: The setup is the same as variation 1, in that it's still true that Sonic can do anything if Sonic gets the Chaos Emerald, but there's a twist: Sonic doesn't exist. This, however, isn't a problem: Sonic appears ex nihilo next to the Emerald in the vault, gets the Emerald, and becomes omnipotent. The first thing he does with his newfound omnipotence is to bring _himself_ into existence a minute in the past, right next to the Emerald---another bootstrap time paradox, the final result of which is that Sonic has the Emerald, and is now omnipotent.
Variation 3: The setup is the same as variation 2, but with another twist: neither Sonic the Hedgehog _nor_ the Chaos Emerald exist. ...You know _exactly_ where this one is going.
Now, here's how I take all of this and distill it into a proof that God exists: if this paradox were possible, then there would be a _lot_ of these spontaneously-self-creating beings, including some that would find it amusing to appear to us while we were discussing these time paradoxes...yet none have appeared. What could _prevent_ such beings from appearing to us, if they would be omnipotent? Only something or Someone who is already omnipotent could prevent that, and whoever or whatever they are, they must have omnipotent influence at all points in time; if they did not, then from some point in time where they're not omnipotent, these spontaneously-self-creating beings could subvert them from a point in time where they're not omnipotent.
So...that's the proof. Dunno if it works, but hopefully it's at least amusing :) Is it the first new one in a few centuries, or are there more recent ones?

@@longWriter I'd say you do not understand time... its warped by games and movies to thinking it some thing that can be traveled backwards on. Time is a hard concept to wrap our heads around really... but time is just a way we measure things. To simplify it some, think of distance. If you travel 1 km up the road, then 1km back to where you started... you still traveled 2 km... not 0, you aren't canceling out the distance you traveled, you keep moving. For time, we measure how everything changes (cells copy themselves in living things, wind erodes mountains, etc etc...), and intellectualize it into something called time, so we can measure it, to try to understand. Traveling back in time isn't some type of a time line thing you can just do... it would take reversing every single thing in existence to a data set that has been lost... its fun to think of an imagine in fantasy worlds, but it just doesn't roll over into reality.

Any upstanding institution should have had a severance agreement presented at this meeting, additionally with someone from their IT department on hand to immediately download any personal files. You did not sign an NDA. The fact that you were offered additional payment for your silence speaks volumes regarding your now ex-employer’s motives. Please, PLEASE immediately consult with an attorney.

Also, no matter how much a company/organization (school in your case) pretends that you're very important to them, don't ever buy it. You're important until you're not...
Now the important part: It's obviously been a day or two since you got fired (unless they fired you on Sunday?). Let yourself grieve for a bit, but when you wake up tomorrow, realize that "they" just opened the door for you to make changes and become a better version of you. Start your media business, start a private tutoring/teaching business, etc. This is your platform, your lane, and you should use it to your advantage dude. Never, ever do personal business on an employer's computer. The temptation is understandable but risky, as Warren found out. In addition to to the risk of losing your data, you have no expectation of privacy.
Your employer will likely have deployed tracking software and even a keystroke logger. Anyone in IT could get access to your private email, cloud storage, social media accounts, online banking, brokerage accounts and more.
Your employer could also claim ownership of any IP you create on their systems, including patents for inventions, copyrights for your writing and music and trademarks for your side hustle. This is unfair, unethical and perfectly legal. Carry a second laptop. It's inconvenient and expensive but you have way too much to lose.

I agree with you regarding personal files, photos, etc on an employer-provided computer. I was let go during a 2009 company-wide downsizing during the ‘Great Recession’. The company had a guy from the IT department on hand to download personal files, with my manager present, while she ‘helped’ me clean out my desk. I had already seen the signs of a tremendous drop-off in business, so I’d begun preparing weeks in advance by clearing my drawers of unneeded files. I always kept a tidy, clutter free desk, so all I needed to take with me was a coffee mug, my lunch I’d brought from home, a single employee file, and now my severance package envelope. I never had a single personal file or photo on that computer - EVER - as this company gave off distrustful, snarky vibes from day one.
She was astounded, and demanded the IT guy to “search” my computer for hidden files. He’d already been given 24 hours notice regarding those of us who would be fired that morning. He told her I had the cleanest computer in the entire company. She was then joined by our Chief Scientific Officer, demanding proof that I’d used the computer for anything unrelated to my job - including emails, online shopping, etc. He found ONE item……an order for a floral arrangement. Yep, I was verbally torn apart in the hallway outside my office for using company property for personal use. This “how dare you” tirade was heard throughout the building. After about 3 minutes of this ‘tear down’ the IT guy finally spoke up (after having been interrupted by these two fools), and continued with his finding: The floral arrangement was ordered for delivery to a funeral home 1,800 miles away. Silence. I explained I had ordered the flowers for my father’s funeral. It would now be my extreme pleasure to walk out that front door, never to return to such a heartless organization, but before I departed, I would be personally shaking the hands of all my fellow employees (we were about 60 souls in total). These fools stood there in silence, finally at a loss for words. I held my head high, shook hands, received lots of hugs, wiped away tears (not mine), picked up my meager belongings, and handed my security card to my now ex-manager. That was a good day.
Surprise! Within an hour of arriving home, my ex-manager phoned, saying that a beautiful bouquet of flowers, chocolate covered strawberries, and an additional edible arrangement had arrived for me at the office! It was sent by a client, whom I’d coordinated a very successful medical device study and fast-track FDA application for. They had no idea I was no longer employed at the company. My ex-manager wanted to deliver them to my house; however I turned her down. Four of us had been fired that day, leading to an “am I next” atmosphere. Something good had to happen that day, so I told her to leave everything - including the thank-you note - in the employee break room for everyone to enjoy. My good day turned into a better day with that single decision.

@@ge2719 exactly! I have 3 usb flash drives connected at all times and back up all new work daily -- sometimes several times a day. I live as though I expect the computer to fail at any moment (it's 8 years old), and I already have its successor staged with current copies of browser links. My laptop hard drive is organized with 3 main folders: Archive, Reference, and Current. Archive and Reference files almost never change -- they are fully backed up in triplicate on 3 portable hard drives. Current is where all active file changes occur -- it is backed up in generations on the 3 portable hard drives as well as daily on the 3 flash drives.

So sorry to hear this. I'm 80 years old, and I've really only been watching what has been happening to free speech, and what was once, the exchange of ideas in the last year. I find it amazing, that the whole western world seems to have gone backwards. It's as if, people have returned to the days of, burning people at the stake, because of rumours and innuendo, medieval times have returned.

@@Ypykaiayyymfr Can you explain to me how he is anti-woke? He appears to be playing the victim here. He gets fired without notice, which sucks but that is what thousands of Americans go through when their employer doesn't want them for whatever reason. He also whines about losing his personal projects because they took his work computer, which is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard (why are you doing personal projects on your work computer and/or not backing up your work??). He also complains that they weren't checking in on him when he was going through a "storm", which, to expect from a boss who knows nothing about you, just reeks of entitlement. If this isn't the classic woke victim playbook, then I don't know what is.
