      I do think you should broaden your reading list, because you seem you do like more different literary approach and have completely different interests than vlogger.
      I always recommend person should stick to books and subjects that he/she generally loves, it is what matters, however weird it may seem or difficult at the times. Or, you may find a great recommendation elsewhere for something new and probably interesting at the moment.

    I watched the movie ‘I’m thinking of ending things’ and loved it so much. Then I read the book, which was beautiful in the way books are. But the movie did such a good job and getting the atmosphere and tone of the book perfectly right and in some ways out does the book in certain visual twists and subtleties that are too explicit and overt in the book

      @giuoco 4 місяці тому +12

      @@Crystal-nw3mv I guess it wasn’t for you, but I absolutely loved it. beautiful strange acting and atmosphere and sound design. The way they visualised stream of consciousness, inner monologues, dreams, was very entrancing. I think critics loved it but yea it’s not popular among general audiences.. too bad
      It’s also an adaptation, it’s not suppsed to be a replica. It’s an interpretation of the ending, it’s more fitting I think, I wouldn’t have liked a Fight Club type reveal at the end at all

      @@Crystal-nw3mv it was surreal to me. And the janitor subplot was linked in a way that didn’t explain everything but it all made sense and fell into place. oh my gosh where do i START with this video!!!
    first of all, god it is sooo refreshing to find someone whose presence on here isn't just reading cringe books and calling them cringe. like fork found in kitchen ! being recommended books you LOVE with this passion and articulation- ugh, i'm hooked! i immediately checked all of them out on libby! EXCEPT the first one bc i've already read it and i actually wasn't sure i liked it much! and i actually preferred the movie adaptation bc i'm a sicko pervert. BUT your review honestly made me wanna go back and reread it and give it another chance :D
    i also loved the premise of this review video being "books that freaked me out" because i love to see what freaks people out! horror is so subjective, i've read thrillers that gave me nightmares! your picks are ones i've mostly never seen mentioned before and i am like SALIVATING to dig into them.
    also i love how concise and to the point this video is. no meandering, just enough genuine passion and excitement to get your point across.

    Oh man, I had no idea I’m Thinking of Ending Things was originally a book, I’m one of the unfortunates who saw the movie with no context and I was so angry at it for building up all this tension and revealing all these puzzle pieces that I could tell were connected, I just wasn’t sure HOW exactly, and I was really looking forward to that mystery coming to fruition, only for the movie to basically flip the table over at the last second, scattering the puzzle pieces, and acting like doing so was somehow clever. No actually, you just threw an entire perfectly good story into the trash and then expected applause, fuck that and fuck you. (directed at the filmmakers I mean)
    I’d honestly love to know what the FUCK they were even remotely trying to go for with that, and see that creepy mystery PROPERLY unraveled, so I’ll have to give it a read!
    (Side note: it also drove me INSANE that like half the movie took place in a car ride and NEITHER OF THEM HAD SEATBELTS ON THE ENTIRE GODDAMN TIME)

    I watched the I’m Thinking of Ending Things movie before reading the book. Whole time I was very confused and I didn’t know what was happening but I sort of enjoyed it? Fast forward a few years later and I find a used copy on my local bookstore so I decided to pick it up since a friend of mine told me the book was not as confusing. Now, at this time I had forgotten a lot of things about the movie but I was still debating whether to read it or not since I hate watching movies first and I did it just because I saw it on Netflix and I didn’t know it was an adaptation. The book was a million times better, even having a vague idea of what was going to happen I was still SO tense throughout it, and frankly scared at points. I mean, I agree with you, it’s not an easy book to translate into a movie and that made me appreciate the movie more since it’s sort of a stream of consciousness book so they did what they could, but how I wish I would’ve read the book first because I think I would’ve loved it a lot more

    I feel you on the thumbnail thing. I hate selfies, the idea of posing for a thumbnail photo it freaks me out. So I just never take selfies. River Phoenix in one interview talks about how he hates being captured so much on camera, and how he started having superstitions after he learned about how Native Americans believe that cameras take away people's souls in small pieces with each photograph. Video seems a bit different even though it's technically thousands of stills, it's this still aspect of photographs that seem uncanny to me. Great channel 👍

It definitely doesn’t hurt that it was adapted and directed by Charlie Kaufman, combined with the out of this world cast with the likes of Jessie Buckley, Jessie Plemons, Toni Collette, and David Thewlis. I have to say that nothing freaked me out in the world than reading The Vegetarian by Han Kang, that I would love to see turned into a movie, but a Korean production nonetheless, speaking of movies not being the same as the book, I'm currently in the middle of finishing Yoder's Nightbitch and the trailer dropped, amd ofc it's got dumbed down from the text, but I'm still holding hope

    I’m Thinking of Ending Things terrified me!!! The basement scene with the creepy paintings made me sleep with a nightlight for weeks 😂😅

    I haven't read any work by Melchor, but you got me thinking about sentences length, because Spanish is a "longer" language than English, we normally need more words to say the same thing, so now I'm truly curious, I going to have to pick one up.

    I'm wondering if you have read Hum by Helen Phillips and what you thought? I felt similarly at the end of it as you described how you felt at the end of The Need, like something went over my head
