My dad , who passed last year, wasn’t just a fan of the 1911, he absolutely loved them. He was a gunsmith for many years and We were talking when he was in hospice about guns and I asked him what’s his favorite pistol was and his reply was “Any of the 14 1911’s in my gun safe “. He continued “in my mind, it’s the only automatic pistol that I would have in a shtf situation. They’re tried and true “. I gave my step brothers one each and my son’s one each and kept the rest. They do make a statement when you snatch one out. I’ve grown to love them too. Much love to you Scott. And RIP Dad.
It's actually interesting to see at the damage and how weirdly "the path of least resistance works" I mean... the charge inside that .45 ACP bullet was so powerful,it was literally easier for all the pressure to tear the barrel and the gun apart than push the bullet all the way down the barrel.
For note: The actual patent for the 1911 shows that the weakest point along the barrel is the along the lower part of the barrel as it is not fully supported by the remaining mass of the slide. Unless you have lightning cuts or speed cuts on the slide that barrel will be fully supported along the left, right, and top but not the bottom making the look up inherently air tight and forcing any over pressure downwards: this pressure being forced downwards is the very reason the locking action works as it prevents the action from opening until it is safe but if you have to much... well you saw what happens.
@nemesisnick66 250k psi is beyond the failure point of steel that thick you'd need a SIGNIFICANTLY thicker barrel to take it, you can take a 45acp 1911 barrel safely to top end of 45 super pressures but at 250k you are beyond what a short barrel will drop pressure wise.
That is not quite how it works. The pressure takes the path of least resistance only in the longer periods of time. When the pressure wave is practically instant, the first thing to break is the first thing the pressure wave hits. Shock force loads works differently than force over time. On the other hand, If we ignore the bullet in the barrel and are observing in a smaller scale just the barrel, it will break from where it is the weakest. From where the crystal lattices have the weakest bonds together in the metal.
Curiosity suddenly hit me. Those cinder blocks did break pretty easily. Makes me curious about seeing a test video about different types and qualities of cinder blocks and how good they would be at stopping different bullets.

Hi Scott I heard your comments about the cinder blocks. Two major factors in this regard. I was always taught by SAMMI that; 21,000 to 23,000 psi or cup was the acceptable amount of pressure for the Colt .45. automatic pistol in it's as issued configuration.
I must have been lucky, when I was serving in the Army at Ft. Carson I purchased a Thompson 1911 from a private owner who also did his own reloads, for the first 100 round had no problems no misfires so I bought another 100 rounds from him, after the first mag no problems, the first shot of the second mag boom, it appeared that the first round some how set off the rest of the rounds in the magazine, when I open my eyes I couldn't believe them my hand was still there, had a couple of minor cuts and it was numb for a while, what really surprised me was the gun, it had the stock walnut grips, they were obliterated, the mag was blown out of the gun, after I went to the dispensary and got patch up I took the rest of the ammo and the gun back the guy clean up re-blued and put some Pachmayer grips on it, wasn't sure I should trust his reloads I bought some Remington FMJs and tried it out, had no problems, that's why I will alway be a fan of the 1911
That ultra spicy round leading to a catastrophic failure is a grim reminder of the worst possible thing that can happen, and has happened to Scott. I pray that this happens to no one else, ever.
The 45 acp is one of the most reloaded rounds in history. Instead of making a high power round, the opposite is just as likely. What would happen with a squib load that pushed the round into the barrel followed by regular powered load without clearing the obstruction?
A normal pressure round would just push it out. You’d be surprised what it takes. On a demolition ranch episode a few years ago Matt did barrel obstructions on 9mm and one barrel was completely filled with solder and it pushed it out. Another was stuffed with a piece of rebar and same thing just turned the rebar into a missile. And they were hipoints which I’m sure have poor quality barrels. On a high velocity rifle with a long barrel it would probably be more eventful though. There’s also a minigun video on UA-cam where they fire a holy crap ton of rounds and every now and then you can see a squib on the slow mo and then the next time the barrel cluster finishes a rotation the next round just shoves it out

I watched a friend suffer a squib round barrel blockage on his 1911 followed up with a live round. A far more likely problem than this entertaining intentional hot round event. The good news is after the barrel split, the gasses were directed, per design, down into and out the mag well leaving some serious powder burns on my buddy’s hands where gasses got through the grip/frame gaps. Other than marks on and stinging palms, no harm or foul. Well, until he had to go after IMI who did eventually pay for the damaged firearm. The normal operating pressure for a 1911 is around 20K PSI not 40K PSI, the .460 Rowland has a maximum chamber pressure of 40K PSI though. Also the dummy hands were much farther forward than if they were real hands griping the pistol so there likely would not be as much damage to your hands as this depicts but because your grip would likely have less force than a vise your head might not do so well from the recoiling remains of the pistol.
You are not the "Gun Instructor" you are "Gun Destructor" That is cool idea for a T-Shirt right there! If you make it sent me couple I will weare them :D
Sorry to be the one to correct Scott's Kentucky math, but he does not have a "ton" (2000 lbs) of cinder blocks there. He has between 500-600 lbs of blocks there. Weight varies on those blocks. Just busting on you, love the videos. Rock on 🤘😎
SAAMI pressure for a .45acp is 18,000 to 21,000 psi. I believe you said 40,000 psi in the vid. Most kabooms of 1911s result in little to no injury to the shooter, The case head isn't supported at the feed ramp, so the case web lets loose there, directing all the pressure down into the magazine well. Mag will be destroyed and ejected, handle pannels may break/crack/come off, that's where most injuries will come from.
thank you, came here to say that. I would add that, with exception to 45 super and starline 45 acp brass which are capable, though with questionable safety, of reaching those pressures if the reloader is skilled enough.
I love your videos Scott, they are great. I love Kentucky kustoms as well. I watch you on a daily basis. Thank you for the entertaining content and for being one of the best channels out there man. And don't worry i definitely hit that subscribe button 😂.
Here's an idea, instead of just going straight to the spicy meatball, get loads that start at the max recommended, then subsequent ones that start increasing load pressures gradually just to see how far it will actually go before failure. Maybe even chrono them as you go.
Like the Doom reference :) WHY is a large piece of metal crushing a Halloween fugure and tables funny AND stupidly funny? :D Wonderful stuff as always ;)
love the video scott i have an idea for you why dont you invite Kirie Pederson of the sting zone to shoot all of the heavy recoiling rifles and call the segment the recoil zone
well 200,000 psi is quite a bit more powerful than any normal detonation. Also your fingers wouldn't be where they were, in the way. So no that wouldn't happen.

Had to click instantly when you say you blew up another gun 😂. Stay safe.
I remember when you first introduced T-Rex and I am so glad to see that he has lasted this long 😂 him and bob are my favorite supporting actors
5:25 Crows literally circling for bodies lol
I love your videos Scott, they are great. I love Kentucky kustoms as well. I watch you on a daily basis. Thank you for the entertaining content and for being one of the best channels out there man. And don't worry i definitely hit that subscribe button 😂.
"It's a spicy meat-a-ball" 😂😂😂😂😂 please make a shirt with this on it 😂😂😂😂😂
9:11 soak the blocks in water a few hours then let ‘em dry, we usually spray them with a hose but should help them cure better
"Nothing has survived yet except me!" I love you man!
I feel like gun manufacturers should do these tests. We need people like Scott to do their work for them. Also one of the best intros ever
Here's an idea, instead of just going straight to the spicy meatball, get loads that start at the max recommended, then subsequent ones that start increasing load pressures gradually just to see how far it will actually go before failure. Maybe even chrono them as you go.
I would love to see a colt peacemaker or any black powder gun.
with all of your throwing stuff in the video, it really helps us determine the ballistics in kentucky
Like the Doom reference :)
WHY is a large piece of metal crushing a Halloween fugure and tables funny AND stupidly funny? :D
Wonderful stuff as always ;)
I would love to see a bulpup tested, something like an Aug, because the face is so much closer to the chamber during a failure
Not for nothing brother you gots to be careful. I love what you do and what this channel stands for. Your a legend.
we knew Scott was gonna blow up the booger 1911 no matter what the quarter landed on 😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for not destroying that beautiful gun
I’d love to see you test/blow up some type of bullpup rifle or carbine. Something like a FN P-90, Steyer AUG, Tavor, or Springfield Hellion.
This is the only man on the planet with a reoccurring Amazon order for tables.
I am so glad to see the grip you were worried about damaging survived 😁
Love the jokes man keep em coming
love the video scott i have an idea for you why dont you invite Kirie Pederson of the sting zone to shoot all of the heavy recoiling rifles and call the segment the recoil zone
Fantastic video as always, but that crane truck at the end, what a unit. Outriggers and everything
You need the slow-mo guys back for one of these episodes. Maybe a revisiting of a 50 BMG.
Magnificent candidate for "anger management" succes...😂😂😂😂😂❤
This has happened to me. We see time and again auto loading guns disapate the explosion better than other designs.
I was scared when the shrapnel broke the cinder blocks. But then comfortable relieved when they broke from the lightest touch 😂
well 200,000 psi is quite a bit more powerful than any normal detonation.
Also your fingers wouldn't be where they were, in the way.
So no that wouldn't happen.
They don't make a 46 but they make a .455 Webley. Not sure that is an improvement! 🙂
