"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on UA-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on UA-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

The problem especially in the south is that a lot of these people are brainwashed by the media they watch. I have had heated debates with trumpers. The funny thing is when I hit them with reason and logic they have said that I’m right. It’s tough cause you could tell the ones that are racist and you could tell the ones that are just ignorant to the issues that affect them. I dont know if Ana will eventually switch side but ever since she got married to her husband, she has been spending a lot more time with his family in Florida (which is completely fine and normal) but that has made Ana more and more sympathetic towards conservatives. She would never admit it forgetting that fact that she is the last person who will notice it as someone who lives in her own bubble. She is definitely a lot more critical towards the left over their transgressions or shortcomings that are on the same level if not slightly less as on the right. I think the substance of what Cenk said was correct but as usual, he put it in slightly more aggressive fashion so that put Ana, someone who is sympathetic towards the right, on defense. But if someone else describes my family, and i didnt know that they are talking about my family, I would say that theyre slightly unhinged. Ana was never this forgiving of democrats over the same transgression and I know exactly what she's doing because Ive done the same thing a thousand times. It's really really hard to put way your family/friends blinders. Ive lived with those blinders for most of my life. Ana supports trans rights and substantive, progressive policy positions. A group of activists did a mass exodus from TYT because their orthodoxy demands you aren't allowed to notice that athletic performance isn't based on gender identity or that "birthing persons" and "bonus hole" sound like they came from The Handmaid's Tale and a frat house, respectively. It's not Ana with the problem. A reasonable critique would have been "ya, these terms are dumb, but they're super niche". Instead, activists reliably go from "no one is saying that" to "we will staunchly defend the dumb thing too".

I have to agree...I used to really like Ana and had so much respect for her, but watching this video shied what an ego maniac she has turned into.
I genuinely believe either Ana must have taken some sort of big check from those funding the right or was replaced by an identical lookalike two years ago. I seriously disagree with the idea that she's taken a check or everyone elses "she's going to the right" hype. In my view she started really really going downhill after the overturn of Roe v. wade, and I'm pretty sure that has some type of part in her going so in for the womens rights issue that it wont include trans women who in her mind wont be impacted by it or something. She explained it pretty well on the podcast she went on recently and I'm inclined to agree but with one caveat. Basically she got deeply upset that her fears over the crime wave weren't being taken seriously on the left. She apparently couldn't understand how her fear mongering was playing into conservative narratives and that there are actually good left wing ways to talk about crime. Then the trans stuff happened too. Basically she's having an identity crisis and a powerful emotional reaction to being rejected by her own "tribe."
My caveat here is that the main reason this can even happen is because she's never actually done any of the reading or properly understood the left wing arguments she was making on the show. Most of what she's said recently has been directly, and quite eloquently I might add, been refuted before by Ana herself! It just seems to me that those views were very surface level and her trauma around crime and sexual assault in recent years have caused her to prioritise her own safety above all else and to feel safe she needs to get her right wing crime takes out, as well as other things. She's probably been feeling conflicted for a while. Longer than the two years since the pandemic. She just didn't feel so much pressure before. It's a really sad development.

Does she mean the schools are using inclusive language or calling them by the pronoun/name they want? And she sees a problem with this because...? Does she not realize that students who are not talking with their parents about this issue are likely not doing it because they don't feel safe? Does her "charitable" interpretation of what the man is saying he wants/is afraid of, not extend that far, or is she the one downplaying the far rights/religious fundamentalists' motivations? I grew up in an abusive strict catholic household. There were many topics I was unable to talk about with my family. One of which left me homeless at 16.
Unfortunately, Ana has been discussing this issue (and several others, such as crime and homelessness) without what I’d consider the most basic critical thinking and journalistic integrity skills, which has assisted her in taking a lot of bad faith claims and misrepresentations of what is factually occurring in stories discussing trans people at face value, and with no deeper analysis or reflection upon receiving any justified pushback. I feel like Ana's argument largely is a projection of how she is feeling about being called a TERF for voicing her opinion (wrong as they may be). As a transwoman who have been following Ana for a long while, it's been particularly difficult for me to see her sink down this path. I like to think that she is just a stubborn person who doesn't actually have ill intents, but the long she tries to dig herself into defending these harmful rhetoric, the more actual damage she will cause. To me, the arguments in this debate is very much a reflection about how she does not want to be immediately labeled and assumed a bad faith actor when she has a hot take. Part of me feels bad that she is getting called out so aggressively, but the other pat is just sad that she seemingly is continuously slipping down the right-wing side of the slope....

Trans women I iw they weren't born with female bodies. But gender affirming care isn't any more mutilation than a nose job or a boob job for cis people is.
Societies have standards of what is considered feminine or masculine, and if your brain is wired to be female but you have a male body the only solution is to make the body match as best as possible. Nothing else works. It has all been tried already.
You don't have to personally support a trans person getting surgery but you should support their freedom to do so. Every adult should be free to do whatever they want with their life as long as they don't hurt others.

Many years ago I suspected that Ana would start to shift to the right in her late 30s or early 40s. Mostly because her mindset for how she approaches problems has always been very reactionary and set in her ways. She's never been very adaptable in her thinking and most of her politics has been from Cenk. I've also seen a lot of personal attacks from her as well and unnecessarily focusing on the appearance of people who she disagrees with. We know that "fear" and "disgust" are motivating factors for the conservative mind. So I have no doubt that she feels grossed out by trans people and that is influencing her politics. She also owns a gun because it makes her "feel" safe.

I'd be curious to get your reaction, Kyle, to Ana's recent controversies especially related to trans issues. I'm someone that has long watched TYT and who owes a lot of my newer progressive stances to them (and other leftie media figures like you too). I agree. I watched them before trump got elected. I have to say, it is such a disappointment that she is taking a weird side on transgender individual. The fact that she thinks a kid with gender dysphoria should immediately be outed by school personnel gives me the impression that she is taking a side that isn't well thought out, at best. How are you going to out kids when it is such a sensitive and personal thing. The staff couldn't possible know if the child is in danger or not. What could happen? Its possible that child gets abandoned, sent to religious or conversion camps, or they'll live their rest of their young life lying and rehabilitating their image according to what pleases the parent. It can create a lifetime of mental problems.

The common response to this is to say that if the left is allowed to call the right racist for seemingly innocuous opinions then the right can do the same. They can definitely do it. They can claim we're grooming kids and whatever the fuck. But the difference is they don't have the data to back it up! That's what Ana is ignoring in this enlightened centrist pivot of hers. Not everything is 50/50 and her recent cherry picked examples of when the left got it wrong don't really change the balance on that.

I agree with Ana. I think Cenk is being lazy with his interpretation, assuming the worst about Trump supporters because he already has a negative opinion about them.
I know a Trump supporter, and the reason he's worried about open borders isn't because of racism, it's because immigrants drive down wages because they're willing to work for far less money. He is also concerned about parental rights in schools. Not because of anything to do with gay people, he actually supports gay marriage, but because he believes schools shouldn't be getting into politics. He thinks schools are really biased towards the left and are brainwashing kids into anti-capitalism and being anti-American. I disagree with him and believe he's in a misinformation echo chamber, but he's not racist or homophobic.
It's also really easy to understand why a Trump supporter would still support him if he murdered someone. All that means is that they believe a murderer is better than the alternative. And I believe that Kyle and a lot of people in this comment section would say the same thing if the general election was Trump versus Biden and Biden murdered someone. They'd say that, yeah, Biden is a murderer, but a murderer is better than Trump.
If you assume the worst in people and call them racist and homophobic and psychopaths who don't care about murder, the likelihood of you changing their mind plummets.

I think it's important to note WHO someone is steelmaning. If someone does that to every argument, then that's noble. But Ana mysteriously "steelmans" a Trump supporter about "school choice" because of trans people (which btw that guy doesn't mention trans issues, so she's not even steelmaning there). Yet when it comes to """trans activists""" Ana loses her mind and forgets all about steelmaning. I think this is why people are calling Ana a grifter now. I think Ana is being defensive, due to recent events in which people have been strawmanning her (putting words in her mouth) in order to claim she is "turning into a conservative" over her extremely nuanced opinion about a trans issue. Due to her personal experience on the receiving end, I think she is just wanting to be more careful to not do the same thing to others.

I think that Cenk nailed it. It's good that Ana pointed out that the folks who were interviewed didn't explicitly say what Cenk attributed to them, but I think Cenk's right to use critical thinking skills to suss out what's really going on. People rationalize and mischaracterize their attitudes and behavior all the time., so taking their statements at face value is foolish.
It's not like conservatives have been covering up their bigotry behind euphemisms for decades now. Just take them at their word on these issues that all connect to race, gender, sexuality, and class.
