0:57 I like how that's the best picture they had of that guy, as he's staring into the sun. He looks like Dave Letterman's stunt double

I love when instruction booklets used to do stuff like that. The one for Kwirk on the Game Boy is also a delightfully fun read.

Wow what AWESOME bosses. Had no idea the NES could do such huge colourful bosses. Brilliant stuff.

This is one of those NES games I've always wanted to play, it just looks like a ton of fun. Also, the main character looks like a teenage Spike from Cowboy Bebop.
This video has also made me acutely aware of how often I say "dude", "rad" and "sweet". C'mon, dude xD

This one went completely under my radar back in the day. (Maybe if they had also called it "Magic John" over here too...) Also the sprites in this game are WAY higher-tier than I would have thought! Didn't think there were many surprises left on the NES, but here we are. Truly an educational video. 10/10.

So, how to localize this Japanese game, "Magic John"? Wing hat teen and his Super Sentai flying sprite isn't going to fly in the US. Let's make him into a cool teen and a green lizard man or something. We'll keep the Magic John sprites, but we won't stick it onto the box. We will lean into the mohawk guy from level 1, but 1990 him up by 1000%.
The cinematics need more "Dude". Americanize the girl by 100%. Make her older and less cutesy.
We'll make the box art like Fruit By the Foot.
Now for a name. It doesn't have to have anything to do with the game. We need something Awesome. Something Excellent. Something ... Totally Rad.
Excellent. Now to work on repackaging Phalanx...

@@NESFriend Remember, the truly skilled can beat the game mostly as Jake's human form. But if you wanna really stomp this game then you gotta master The Lion form. You can wreck all late game bosses by just doing a little hop and spamming the claw. The early bosses in Jakes form can be defeated rather easily with the trick of stopping time. I don't abuse it but speed runners sure do. Great review as always!

I got this game when I was like 7, 8 years old on the NES. I thought that the manual and the writing in the game's cutscenes was absolutely hilarious, but the game was too hard for me to ever beat it until I also got a Game Genie. And by then, well, I thought the writing was even funnier! It just gets better and better the older I get!

Gonna attempt to give my rough and dirty summary of the story from the Japanese Wikipedia entry here
"John" is like a typical American kid (think preteen boy) who ends up as a regular at like a nearby amusement park after becoming a fan of a super talented magician dude named "Mister Pon" and his "Super Magic Show" ("John" is pronounced in a gnarly way like "Jone" and also rhymes with "Pon"). Anyway, he tells his girlfriend "Yuu" (totally an early 90s American name, right?) that he wants to ask Mr. Pon if he can be his apprentice to learn cool magical arcane stuff. Mr. Pon agrees to teach him (rad!), but he tells John that for training to be a "super magician" he will only teach him stuff for training his physical body and like stamina at first (bummer). Anyway, one day some mysterious dudes decide to crash the party and like totally kidnap Yuu (not cool), so John righteously decides to use what he learned so far to try to rescue her.
Okay, in all sincerity, the Japanese game doesn't really use nearly as much localized slang as the American version, but it does have its own flavor in Japanese expressions.
Also, there is a removed scene from the original Japanese game (which really is kind of heavy) right before the first level where Mr. Pon uses telepathy to tell John that Yuu was captured by the enemy. He tells John to use the magic he taught him well and that John's magic power had already grown much stronger than it was before. He also tells John that he will be thinking often as there is also magic that will not work so effectively within, and to use his magic carefully in order to save Yuu.

May have been said, but the Icon for transforming back to Jake is a Sneaker... Since that is... Totally Rad... 😅
Magic John used a Cap, since the Character had a Cap that was pretty noticeable...

For October maybe you should cover Monster Party ? I had it on NES and it was funny but also a bit off putting, like when the first stage changes mid way through. Really challenging but I liked the game.

Oh god. I was in like 5th-6th grade in the late 80s-early 90s. I remember the giant "surfer lingo" push in kid's media.
It was annoying. Besides the "so pitted" meme guy, who the hell actually talks like that? We sure dont out here in cascadia. And we got a really similar accent to California's.
Those boss designs are absolutely tubular tho. Like rad. Or something. Seriously though, thats some of the best spritework Ive seen on the NES. At first when you showed game footage, I was pretty meh at the main char. But, wow. Those bosses.
